    Ok, first off, I didn't program this page with frames! I'll be getting rid of them later. For now I need to solve this problem. There's a link within a frame.     What characters are allowed in linux environment variable names? My cursory search of man pages and the web did only produce information about how to work with variables, but not which names are allowed. I have a Java program that requires an defined environment variable containing a dot, like com.example.fancyproperty. With Windows I can set that variable, but I had no luck setting it in linux (tried in SuSE and Ubuntu). Is that variable name even allowed?

Now I want the users to be able to just double click the file and have it open with my application. I tried to set the "Always use the selected program..." option in the windows "Open With" dialog box, but do not know how to receive the file name that Windows sends to my application.   • What does "the application failed to initialize properly" mean?

    I just got a bug report from someone running an app I wrote under Windows XP. He says it won't start up. The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002). Click on OK to terminate the application. It works fine at my end, (under Windows 7,) and I don't have any Win7- or Vista-specific stuff in the program, so it should work on XP too. How do I go about tracking this down and debugging it?

For instance, some anti virus applications register an LSP and analyse network traffic that way. Is there a friendly way to accomplish the same sort of thing on OSX?

    By what i understand String and StringBuilder objects both allocate contiguous memory underneath. My program runs for days buffering several output in a String object. This sometimes cause outofmemoryexception which i think is because of non availability of contiguous memory. my string size can go upto 100MBs and i m concatenating new string frequently this causes new string object being allocated. i can reduce new string object creation by using Stringbuilder but that would not solve my problem entirely Is there an alternative to a contiguous string object?

    I'm using Python, for what it's worth, but will accept answers in any applicable language. I've tried writing to /proc/$pid/cmdline, but that's a readonly file. I've tried assigning a new string to sys.argv[0], but that has no perceptible impact. Are there any other possibilities? My program is executing processes via os.system (equivalent to system(3)) so a general, *NIX-based solution using an additional spawning process would be fine.
