• SSIS Prehistory video

  I’m currently wasting spending my Easter bank holiday putting together my presentation SSIS Dataflow Performance Tuning for the upcoming SQL Bits conference in London and in doing so I’m researching some old material about how the dataflow actually works. Boring as it is I’ve gotten easily sidelined and have chanced upon an old video on Channel 9 entitled Euan Garden - Tour of SQL Server Team (part I). Euan is a former member of the SQL Server team and in this series of videos he walks the halls of the SQL Server building on Microsoft’s Redmond campus talking to some of the various protagonists and in this one he happens upon the SQL Server Integration Services team. The video was shot in 2004 so this is a fascinating (to me anyway) glimpse into the development of SSIS from before it was ever shipped and if you’re a geek like me you’ll really enjoy this behind-the-scenes look into how and why the product was architected. The video is also notable for the presence of the cameraman – none other than the now-rather-more-famous-than-he-was-then Robert Scoble. • Writing a Book, and Moving my Blog

  I started blogging about SQL Server here at SQLblog back in July, 2009 and it was a lot of fun, I enjoyed it a lot. Then later, after a series of blog posts about the Query Optimizer, I was invited to write an entire book about that same topic. But after a few months I realized that it was going to be hard to continue both blogging and writing chapters for a book, this in addition to my regular day job, so I decided to stop blogging for a little while.   Now that I have finished the last chapter of the book and I am working on the final chapter reviews, I decided to start blogging again. This time I am moving my blog to   http://www.benjaminnevarez.com   Same as my previous posts I plan to write about my topics of interest, like the relational engine, and basically anything related to SQL Server. • Building Interactive User Interfaces with Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX: Refreshing An UpdatePanel With Jav

  The ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel provides a quick and easy way to implement a snappier, AJAX-based user interface in an ASP.NET WebForm. In a nutshell, UpdatePanels allow page developers to refresh selected parts of the page (instead of refreshing the entire page). Typically, an UpdatePanel contains user interface elements that would normally trigger a full page postback - controls like Buttons or DropDownLists that have their AutoPostBack property set to True. Such controls, when placed inside an UpdatePanel, cause a partial page postback to occur. On a partial page postback only the contents of the UpdatePanel are refreshed, avoiding the "flash" of having the entire page reloaded. (For a more in-depth look at the UpdatePanel control, refer back to the Using the UpdatePanel installment in this article series.) Triggering a partial page postback refreshes the contents within an UpdatePanel, but what if you want to refresh an UpdatePanel's contents via JavaScript? Ideally, the UpdatePanel would have a client-side function named something like Refresh that could be called from script to perform a partial page postback and refresh the UpdatePanel. Unfortunately, no such function exists. Instead, you have to write script that triggers a partial page postback for the UpdatePanel you want to refresh. • Object model design: collections on classes

  Hi all, Consider Train.Passengers, what type would you use for Passengers where passengers are not supposed to be added or removed by the consuming code? I'm using .NET Framework, so this discussion would suit .NET, but it could apply to a number of modern languages/frameworks. In the .NET Framework, the List is not supposed to be publicly exposed. There's Collection and ICollection and guidance, which I tend to agree with, is to return the closest concrete type down the inheritance tree, so that'd be Collection since it is already an ICollection. But Collection has read/write semantics and so possibly it should be a ReadOnlyCollection, but its arguably common sense not to alter the contents of a collection that you don't have intimate knowledge about so is it necessary? And it requires extra work internally and can be a pain with (de)serialization. At the extreme ends I could just return Person[] (since LINQ now provides much of the benefits that previously would have been afforded by a more specified collection) or even build a strongly-typed PersonCollection or ReadOnlyPersonCollection! • file error /boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod trying to repair boot, live dvd install probleml

  I have seen that there are a lot of threads about this problem. I had Windows 8 installed on my series 3 samsung i5 computer and I tried to install ubuntu 13.04. This is what I did: Because of the secure boot I can't install ubuntu from the dvd. So I went in the bios and disabled secure boot and enabled ''CSM''. I went out of the bios and windows 8 couldn't boot more. So I follow a guide on this thread ( Installing on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 System (UEFI Supported) ) and on ubuntu I tried to repair the boot by inserting this code in the terminal: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install boot-repair Then I ran boot-repair and I follow all the steps. Then I reboot the sistem and saw the black screen that says: error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal mod' not found grub rescure> Now I saw a lot of guides about this problem but I can't understand how to reistall ubuntu trough the live dvd that I used to install it the first time... I put it in the computer but nothing appears.. so what should I do now? I'm a noob on ubuntu and I have read all the things about this grub 2 install and know where the problem comes from but how to start the dvd??

  While most of our articles focus on security of the digital sort, this interview with a professional safecracker is an interesting look the physical side of securing your goods. As part of their Interviews with People Who Have Interesting or Unusual Jobs series over at McSweeney’s, they interviewed Ken Doyle, a professional a locksmithing and safecracking veteran with 30 years of industry experience. The interview is both entertaining and an interesting read. One of the more unusual aspects of safecracking he highlights: Q: Do you ever look inside? A: I NEVER look. It’s none of my business. Involving yourself in people’s private affairs can lead to being subpoenaed in a lawsuit or criminal trial. Besides, I’d prefer not knowing about a client’s drug stash, personal porn, or belly button lint collection. When I’m done I gather my tools and walk to the truck to write my invoice. Sometimes I’m out of the room before they open it. I don’t want to be nearby if there is a booby trap. Q: Why would there be a booby trap? A: The safe owner intentionally uses trip mechanisms, explosives or tear gas devices to “deter” unauthorized entry into his safe. It’s pretty stupid because I have yet to see any signs warning a would-be culprit about the danger. • indirect rendering issue on 12.04, using ati driver

  I have ubuntu 12.04 64-bit system, when i run glxinfo i see some strange error about indirect rendering and failed to load some lib32/dri/swrast_dri libraries. • The Windows Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) and the Windows Azure Training Kit (WATK)

  Windows Azure is a platform that allows you to write software, run software, or use software that we've already written. We provide lots of resources to help you do that - many can be found right here in this blog series. There are two primary resources you can use, and it's important to understand what they are and what they do. The Windows Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) Actually, this isn't one resource. We have SDK's for multiple development environments, such as Visual Studio and also Eclipse, along with SDK's for iOS, Android and other environments. Windows Azure is a "back end", so almost any technology or front end system can use it to solve a problem. The SDK's are primarily for development. In the case of Visual Studio, you'll get a runtime environment for Windows Azure which allows you to develop, test and even run code all locally - you do not have to be connected to Windows Azure at all, until you're ready to deploy. You'll also get a few samples and codeblocks, along with all of the libraries you need to code with Windows Azure in .NET, PHP, Ruby, Java and more. • Demantra USA Based Companies and SOX Compliance

  A USA based company is assessing Demantra Trade Promotion Management (TPM) capability.  It appears that SOX is necessary in their case due to the nature of what TPM does and the necessity for auditability.  Do we have any detail on SOX compliance for Demantra? Answser ------- SOX compliance with regards to IT: 1.  Requires auditing of data changes done by who, what, when     a. Audit trail profiles can be set up for key financial series and view them in audit trail reports     b. One functionality we do not have which typically is asked for is user login history. We have only        active sessions, history is not available. 2.  Segregation of duties     a. With respect to TPM, you could have deduction and financial analyst for settlement be different        from promotion creator, promotion approver or sales team.     b. Budget Approver for funds can be different from funds consumer.     c. Promotion creator can be different than promotion approver     d. For a US customer you may have to write some custom scripts to capture promotion status change        and produce an external report as part of compliance. • Master-Details with RadGridView for Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services RC2 and Entity Framework 4.0

  I have prepared a sample project with the Silverlight 4 version of RadGridView released yesterday. The sample project was created with Visual Studio 2010, WCF RIA Services RC 2 for Visual Studio 2010, and ADO.NET Entity Framework (.NET 4). I have decided to use the SalesOrderHeader and SalesOrderDetails tables from the Adventure Works Database, because they provide the perfect one-to-many relationship: I will not go over the steps for creating the ADO.NET Entity Data Model and the Domain Service Class. In case you are not familiar with them, you should start with Brad Abrams series of blog posts and read this blog after that. To enable the master-details relationship we need to modify two things. First of all we need to include the automatic retrieval of the child entities in the domain service class. • Linqpad with Table Storage

  LinqPad as we all know has been a wonderful tool for running ad-hoc queries. With Azure Table storage in picture LinqPad was no longer in picture and we shifted focus to Cloud Storage Studio only to realize the limited and strange querying capabilities of CSS. With some tweaking to Linqpad we can get the comfortable old shoe of ad-hoc queries with LinqPad in the Azure Table storage. Steps: 1. Start LinqPad 2. • Installazione ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 su Ubuntu 11.10

  Salve a tutti, possiedo un portatile HP Pavillion dv6 3110 con scheda video dedicata ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 da 1 Giga ed ho installato da poco Ubuntu 11.10 Versione 64 bit. Ho seguito molte guide su internet per installare i driver per la mia scheda video ma nessuna ha dato esito positivo. Nella finestra "driver aggiuntivi" sono riuscito ad installare i "Driver grafici fglrx proprietari ATI/AMD" ma dopo il riavvio non riesco ad utilizzare correttamente la scheda video. Mentre i "Driver grafici fglrx proprietari ATI/AMD (aggiornamenti post-release)" non me li fa proprio installare segnalando un errore che riporto di seguito "L'installazione di questo driver non è riuscita.Consultare i file di registro per maggiori informazioni: /var/log/jockey.log". Ho pensato allora di scaricare direttamente dal sito di AMD gli ultimi driver rilasciati attraverso il pacchetto "amd-driver-installer-12-3-x86.x86_64.run", l'ho lanciato, ho seguito il wizard di installazione, l'installazione viene completata, digito "sudo aticonfig --initial" per la configurazione iniziale, ma al riavvio del pc appaiono soltanto scritte su schermo nero con una serie di "OK" e qualche "FAIL". Ho provato questa procedura anche per le versioni precedenti dei driver, ma il risultato è sempre lo stesso. Sono disperato. Riuscirò mai ad utilizzare la mia scheda video? • Ajax-based data loading using jQuery.load() function in ASP.NET

  In general, jQuery has made Ajax very easy by providing low-level interface, shorthand methods and helper functions, which all gives us great features of handling Ajax requests in our ASP.NET Webs. The simplest way to load data from the server and place the returned HTML in browser is to use the jQuery.load() function. The very firs time when I started playing with this function, I didn't believe it will work that much easy. What you can do with this method is simply call given url as parameter to the load function and display the content in the selector after which this function is chained. So, to clear up this, let me give you one very simple example: $("#result").load("AjaxPages/Page.html"); As you can see from the above image, after clicking the ‘Load Content’ button which fires the above code, we are making Ajax Get and the Response is the entire page HTML. So, rather than using (old) iframes, you can now use this method to load other html pages inside the page from where the script with load function is called. This method is equivalent to the jQuery Ajax Get method $.get(url, data, function () { }) only that the $.load() is method rather than global function and has an implicit callback function. To provide callback to your load, you can simply add function as second parameter, see example: $("#result").load("AjaxPages/Page.html", function () { alert("Page.html has been loaded successfully!") }); Since load is part of the chain which is follower of the given jQuery Selector where the content should be loaded, it means that the $.load() function won't execute if there is no such selector found within the DOM. Another interesting thing to mention, and maybe you've asked yourself is how we know if GET or POST method type is executed? It's simple, if we provide 'data' as second parameter to the load function, then POST is used, otherwise GET is assumed. POST $("#result").load("AjaxPages/Page.html", { "name": "hajan" }, function () { ////callback function implementation });   GET $("#result").load("AjaxPages/Page.html", function () { ////callback function implementation });   Another important feature that $.load() has ($.get() does not) is loading page fragments. Using jQuery's selector capability, you can do this: $("#result").load("AjaxPages/Page.html #resultTable"); In our Page.html, the content now is: So, after the call, only the table with id resultTable will load in our page.   As you can see, we have loaded only the table with id resultTable (1) inside div with id result (2). This is great feature since we won't need to filter the returned HTML content again in our callback function on the master page from where we have called $.load() function. Besides the fact that you can simply call static HTML pages, you can also use this function to load dynamic ASPX pages or ASP.NET ASHX Handlers . Lets say we have another page (ASPX) in our AjaxPages folder with name GetProducts.aspx. This page has repeater control (or anything you want to bind dynamic server-side content) that displays set of data in it. Now, I want to filter the data in the repeater based on the Query String parameter provided when calling that page. For example, if I call the page using GetProducts.aspx?category=computers, it will load only computers… so, this will filter the products automatically by given category. • Can I use Ubuntu One to sync data fiies between two remote computers

  I've got two computers, both running Ubuntu with files in their home folders sync'd in to Ubuntu One. I'd like to know if it's possible to make Ubuntu One automatically download data changes that have been uploaded automatically to Ubuntu One from one computer to the equivalent data file in the other. Clarifying a bit further, I've installed Red Notebook in both computers and so they each have their own /.rednotebook/data folder containing a series of .txt files corresponding to the monthly entries in each of them. These are sync'd to upload any changes to those .txt files to Ubuntu One. My question is can I, and if so how, do I make Ubuntu One automatically download and replace those .txt files in the other computer after they've been updated and uploaded from the first computer? I did labouriously manage to download all those text files which had been uploaded from the first computer, from Ubuntu One one-by-one to the second computer, but what I want to do is automate this process and that's where I'm stuck. I'm aware that things could get a bit complicated if both my computers were on-line at the same time and both were simultaneously making different Red Notebook entries, so that's not the scenario I'm trying to cover. All I want to achieve is that whatever updates to the files have been uploaded by one computer, will automatically be downloaded to the same-named files in the other computer as soon as that second computer appears on line and detects that Ubuntu One has matching but more recent sync'd files than the ones it's holding.

• Java - Resize images upon class instantiation

  Hey StackExchange GameDev community, I'm attempting to: Resize series of sprites upon instantiation of the class they're located in (x2) I've attempted to use the following code to resize the images, however my attempts have been unsuccessful. I have been unable to write an implementation that is even compilable, so no error codes yet. wLeft.getScaledInstance(wLeft.getWidth()*2, wLeft.getHeight()*2, Image.SCALE_FAST); I've heard that Graphics2D is the best option. Any suggestions? I think I'm probably best off loading the images into a Java project, resizing the images then outputting them to a new directory so as not to have to resize each sprite upon class instantiation. What do you think? Photoshopping each individual sprite is out of the question, unless I used a macro.   The last DMV for this month long blog session is the sys.dm_server_services DMV. This DMV returns information about your SQL Server, Full-Text, and SQL Server Agent related services. To further illustrate the information this DMV contains, lets run it against our Training instance that we have been using for this blog series. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_server_services The first column returned by this DMV is the actual Service Name. The next columns are the startup_type and startup_type_desc columns which display your chosen method for how a particular method should be started. The next columns status and status_desc display the current status for each of your Services on the instance. The process_id column represents the server process id. The last_startup_time column gives you the last time that a particular service was started. The service_account column provides you with the name of the account that is used to control the service. The filename column gives you the full path to the executable for the service. Lastly we have the is_clustered column and the cluster_nodename which indicates whether or not a particular service is clustered and is part of a resource cluster group, and if so, the cluster node that the service is installed on. This is a good DMV to provide you with a quick snapshot view of the current SQL Server services you have on your instance.
