  BIG Data – such a big word – everybody talks about this now a days. It is the word in the database world. In one of the conversation I asked my friend Jasjeet Sigh the same question – what is Big Data? He instantly came up with a very effective write-up.  Jasjeet is working as a Technical Manager with Koenig Solutions. He leads the SQL domain, and holds rich IT industry experience. Talking about Koenig, it is a 19 year old IT training company that offers several certification choices. Some of its courses include SharePoint Training, Project Management certifications, Microsoft Trainings, Business Intelligence programs, Web Design and Development courses etc. Big Data, as the name suggests, is about data that is BIG in nature. The data is BIG in terms of size, and it is difficult to manage such enormous data with relational database management systems that are quite popular these days. Big Data is not just about being large in size, it is also about the variety of the data that differs in form or type. Some examples of Big Data are given below : Scientific data related to weather and atmosphere, Genetics etc Data collected by various medical procedures, such as Radiology, CT scan, MRI etc Data related to Global Positioning System Pictures and Videos Radio Frequency Data Data that may vary very rapidly like stock exchange information Apart from difficulties in managing and storing such data, it is difficult to query, analyze and visualize it. The characteristics of Big Data can be defined by four Vs: Volume: It simply means a large volume of data that may span Petabyte, Exabyte and so on. However it also depends organization to organization that what volume of data they consider as Big Data. Variety: As discussed above, Big Data is not limited to relational information or structured Data. It can also include unstructured data like pictures, videos, text, audio etc. Velocity:  Velocity means the speed by which data changes. The higher is the velocity, the more efficient should be the system to capture and analyze the data. Missing any important point may lead to wrong analysis or may even result in loss. Veracity: It has been recently added as the fourth V, and generally means truthfulness or adherence to the truth. In terms of Big Data, it is more of a challenge than a characteristic. It is difficult to ascertain the truth out of the enormous amount of data and the one that has high velocity. There are always chances of having un-precise and uncertain data. It is a challenging task to clean such data before it is analyzed. Big Data can be considered as the next big thing in the IT sector in terms of innovation and development. If appropriate technologies are developed to analyze and use the information, it can be the driving force for almost all industrial segments. These include Retail, Manufacturing, Service, Finance, Healthcare etc. This will help them to automate business decisions, increase productivity, and innovate and develop new products. • Could not retrieve backup settings for primary ID in Log shipping

  I am doing log shipping between two Amazon EC2 instances running Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition. Both the instances are in the same domain and I can access the shared folders between the instances. The SQL server service account, agent service account are all running under a domain account. When I activate log shipping (with stand by mode restore in secondary server), the initial backup gets restored on the secondary. After that the backup operation is getting failed and i get the following error message: *** Error: Could not retrieve backup settings for primary ID 'xxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-4d772cd7337e'.(Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.LogShipping) *** *** Error: Failed to connect to server IP-0A7653F2.(Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) *** ****** Error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server.******** **The server was not found or was not accessible. • How can I make WinXP bind to ports other than 1025-5000 for outgoing TCP connections?

  (I originally posted a similar question on StackOverflow but readers recommended I post here instead) When you create outgoing TCP connections, most applications let the operating system choose which port to use. Most OSes use the IANA recommended dynamic port range of 49152-65535 for this purpose. But in Windows 2003 and earlier (including XP) Microsoft uses ports 1025-5000. Microsoft lets you change the high end of this range via the MaxUserPort TcpIP registry setting, but I see no way to change the low end. I need to have port 4160 free for incoming connections and on rare occasions an outgoing connection steals that port from me before I bind that port.

• Server 2008 R2 .Net 4 Programs running from Network share won't work

  we have several .Net Apps stored on a Network share on our old Server (Windows Server 2003). These Apps get called by Windows 7 32bit Clients and work perfectly fine. We recently wanted to upgrade our Server to Windows Server 2008 R2 and moved the Apps from the old share to our new share on the new Server. The problem started right afterwards since all of our .Net Programs won't start anymore from the new share (2008 R2). The Error that comes up is: "This application could not be started." and with a link to Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2715633 (This Error also shows up when i start a simple console HelloWorld from the server share created in VS2012) Does anyone have any Idea why this is not working anymore on the new Servershare? We've been searching for two days now with no result at all. Any Tips / Help / Questions appreciated :) Greetings Lim

I typed my original Key for windows 8, but it didn't work. Is there any way for me to update to Windows 8.1 without an internet connection and without purchasing another key? Thank you

  Earlier this month Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010, the .NET Framework 4.0 (which includes ASP.NET 4.0), and new versions of their core programming languages: C# 4.0 and Visual Basic 10.   Is there a way to change the desktop wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition? I wanted to do that on my new netbook, just to find out that there is no "Customize" option in the control panel. Microsoft obviously wants to keep the netbook users rather rigidly from customizing their machines. It isn't even possible to edit the picture itself in the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows\ directory, due to lack of rights. From what I can tell only the user "Trusted Installer" would have enough rights to do so...   Flash backs from the past! It's truly amazing to discover that software development from freshman to senior level as well as project management hasn't changed that much. Kerry Nietz describes his memoir from his final year at college to his first job at Fox Software to 'an early retirement' at Microsoft. This title also brought his other fictional novels to my attention. Once again here is the review I published on Amazon: Built to last! I have been around in software development for more than a decade now but honestly I have to admit it is only now that I took the opportunity to read about the history of my used to be primary programming language. In fact, I started with Visual FoxPro 6 back in 1999 and went only down to FoxPro for Windows 2.6 during migration projects - long after the stories described in this title. It is really interesting to see how they actually managed to create a great product with such a small team of developers. "Create the best Report Writer in the world, out of only sawdust, bubblegum, and dreams." - That's the best sentence I'm going to quote from this title in the future. An inspiration to achieve the impossible, only by taking small steps. Just begin the journey - one step after the next one. If you fall, stand up and continue to walk. Kerry takes the reader on an amazing trip through almost 4 years working at a small software company in Perrysburg, Ohio. That went from a another 'look-alike' of the mighty Ashton-Tate dBase to the leading force in database development, long before Microsoft Access (project name: Cirrus) was even finished. It survived Borland Paradox and even nowadays Visual FoxPro is still in daily use in thousands of companies world-wide. Actually, I'm glad that I had the chance to foster my programming knowledge with Visual FoxPro. After his excellent work in software development, Kerry went for a second career as a writer.   What is a Data Connection Library in SharePoint Server 2010? A Data Connection Library in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 is a library that can contain two kinds of data connections: an Office Data Connection (ODC) file or a Universal Data Connection (UDC) file. Microsoft InfoPath 2010 uses data connections that comply with the Universal Data Connection (UDC) file schema and typically have either a *.udcx or *.xml file name extension. Data sources described by these data connections are stored on the server and can be used in standard form templates and browser-enabled form templates. How to create a SharePoint Server Data Connection Library? 1. Browse to a SharePoint Server 2010 site on which you have at least Design permissions. If you are on the root site, create a new site before you continue with the next step. 2. On the Site Actions menu, click More Options. 3. On the Create page, click Library under Filter By, and then click Data Connection Library. 4. On the right side of the Create page, type a name for the library, and then click the Create button. 5. Copy the URL of the new data connection library. How to create a new data connection file in InfoPath? 1. Open InfoPath Designer 2010, click Blank Form, and then click Design Form. 2. On the Data tab, click Data Connections, and then click Add. 3. In the Data Connection Wizard, click Create a new connection to, click Receive data, and then click Next. 4. • Site-to-Site PPTP VPN connection between two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers

  We have two Windows Server 2008 R2 machines, one in our main office and one in a new office which we have just moved offsite. The main office has previously been handling client-to-server PPTP VPN connections. Now that we have moved our second server out of office, we want to set up a demand-dial or persistent VPN connection from the second server to the primary. Using a custom setting RRAS profile, we have successfully managed to set up a site-to-site VPN connection so that from the second server itself, it can access any of the devices in the main office and communicate back. However, any connected machines in the second office cannot use this connection, even when using the second server as gateway. The demand-dial interface is setup from the Second Server dialing into Main Server and a static route set up on RRAS for 192.168.0.0 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 pointing down this network interface. The main office has the network of 192.168.0.0/16 (subnet mask 255.255.0.0). The second office has the network of 172.16.100.0/24 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0). What steps do we need to take to ensure traffic from the second office PCs going towards 192.168.x.x addresses use the VPN route? Many Thanks in advance for any help the community can offer. • Final Release of Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 Released

  If you haven’t already heard the news, the final release of the Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 have been released! That’s great news for Silverlight developers and to top it off the crew up at Microsoft even snuck in a few new features including intellisense for styles (a big deal in my opinion) and the ability to easily manipulate Grid rows and columns.  One of the most time consuming (and boring) tasks experienced by developers is also covered with the new “Go To Value Definition” feature that allows you to jump directly to style definitions with ease.  That feature alone is worth the upgrade especially if you’re working with a large application that uses a lot of styles. Here’s a quick run-down of the features provided by the latest release from the Microsoft team: Support for targeting Silverlight 4 in the Silverlight designer and project system RIA Services application templates and libraries to simplify access to your data services (check out this Silverlight.tv video and whitepaper giving full details) Support for Silverlight 4 elevated trust and out-of-browser applications Enhanced support for other new Silverlight 4 features, including: Working with Implicit Styles Go To Value Definition - navigate directly from controls on your page to styles that are applied to them. • IE9 Beta

  I've been using Internet Explorer 8 since the early pre-release bits, but I never tried IE9 until today – the day the Beta is available. I downloaded it from here: http://www.beautyoftheweb.com/ The download took longer than what I expected, but I was doing other stuff, so no bother. After coming down, it asked me to reboot my computer. Really hate when apps do that, but I did it anyway. The first time I launched it, it prompted me with a list of add-ons I should disable including the start-up time that I could save fore each one. It even let me configure the prompt so, for example, it won't prompt me again unless an add-on contributes to more than 1 second of the startup time. Cool. First thing I noticed is that the search bar had gone and, as you'd expect, you have to search from the address box. I totally despise this feature. The first thing I've been doing with all versions of IE is to turn off the automatic searching from the address bar and now I have no way of searching if I do that. Ridiculous. The second thing I notice is that the tabs are next to the address bar and cannot be moved to go below it. One word for that decision: appalling (and, no, I didn't accidentally drop an 'e' and added an 'l' in the previous word). The third thing I notice to the right is the favorites button (star icon) and when I click on it, it brings up the favorites explorer under it on the right; then I pin the explorer and it jumps to the left(!). Why move the entry point to this feature to the right instead of leaving it on the left is beyond me (other than wanting to retrain me on what I've been used to for all this time), but the fact that pinning it makes it jump sides is… an "astonishing" design decision. As I browse I notice a little annoying pop up in the bottom left every time I hover over a link; there is no status bar. I correctly guessed to right click at the top and turn on the status bar (which also got rid of the popup thereafter) and while I am at it, I bring back my favorites bar which was hidden by default (and am pleased to see that all my favorites are still there). The next thing I notice, I like: IE9 is fast. No joke, I visit sites and they seem to be loading visibly much faster – try it! Beyond the speed, I am interested to find out what else is new. Either way: wherever you are, get IE9 Beta now and judge for yourself. If you don't like it, you can always uninstall (which auto-restores the previous version).   Our client's application EventLog is getting filled up with warnings due to a bug in the Microsoft SQL Server report viewer control, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973219. They have thousands of users running reports so this is making their eventlog hard to use and they want them removed on a frequent basis. I tried using PowerShell to remove the events, but that does not seem possible. Is there a way to prevent these entries from being written to the event log in the first place? I'm thinking I would like to filter out events where event source="ASP.NET 2.0.50727.0", eventId ="1309" and Message contains "Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd"

• .NET WPF Charting Control

  We're very close to wrapping up a WPF dashboarding application using SSRS (.RDLC files) and the Microsoft Report Viewer. For a number of reasons, this combination has turned out to be less than what we had hoped. One of the biggest problems is that the Microsoft Report Viewer is not a WPF control. We've had other problems as well. Our app consists of at least 5 tabs and each tab has at least 4-5 charts on it. All the charts update on their own timed schedules (like every 15-30 minutes). For the next version I'd like to explore other .NET charting tools for WPF. Performance is absolutely critical. As is resource usage. The tool must support WPF and as many chart types as possible. Can anyone recommend (or not recommend) charting tools they have experience with? We own Telerik and I've dabbled with their charting control. At the 30K foot level, it seems quite nice.

  Hi all, today we would like to inform all of you that now you have a chance to improve NetBeans via NetBeans PHP Community Council. The author of this activity is Timur Poperecinii and he would like to tell you a few words about it. Hello passionate technical people, First of all let me introduce myself: my name is Timur, I’m a developer from Moldova (that little country between Romania and Ukraine), I develop mostly in .NET and JQuery, but I love to learn more, not being an expert I am familiar with Java (Struts2, Play), PHP (Symfony2), Ruby (Rails), Sencha Touch 2 and other technologies. I was “introduced” in PHP recently by a client of mine who requested to make the work specifically in PHP. Let me tell you a little story about my experience with open source and IDEs: when I was studying in university in 2007 I think, I did a simple little application in PHP and thought “Damn, if only there was a good IDE for PHP so I could relax and no having to remember all the function names”, then when I searched on internet pretty much everyone was using Vim or Emacs on Linux, but it had no autocomplete anyway, just syntax highlighting. I remember using some tool like Notepad++ I think. Nowadays everything changed, we have highlighting and autocomplete for about all standard things in PHP in many IDEs. I use NetBeans for PHP, and I really am happy with the experience I have there with standard PHP code, but for frameworks I still think there is lots of room for improvements. For example we have some Symfony 2 and Twig support. But I’d love to see more of that coming, for example I’m a big fan of file templates, where the main goal is to not waste time on writing over and over again something that can be generated, and it counts even more when you don’t have a lot of autocomplete. So what I thought, “Hey I know Java a little, and NetBeans has plugins, so may be it worth trying to do a file templates plugin”, and so I did, you can find details about my Unified Udevi Symfony2 Plugin for NetBeans 7.2 on my blog. It wasn’t hard, and it even was fun! Give back to open source Now think a little, NetBeans is an open source project and PHP support is just a part of it, so the resources are pretty limited in this area. But we as a community that uses this product, want to have the best possible experience with PHP and frameworks(!!!). So why don’t we GIVE BACK TO OPENSOURCE ? Imagine an IDE that can do all the things you wanted + it is free. Now how far is NetBeans from that point? I guess not so far – you might miss a little niche thing that you use on a daily basis, but then the question appears why don’t you make it happen on your own? NetBeans PHP Community Council What I proposed is to create a NetBeans PHP Community Council that will be formed of people willing to change something, willing to create plugins for their own needs and for the needs of the community, test the plugins created by them too, and basically evolve NetBeans in direction they want to reach. I already talked with the NetBeans PHP team. They are only happy to help this Council, with technical advises, opening some APIs we might need to have access to, and other things. One important thing to mention is that this Council is a Community project, so though we’ll have direct discussions with NetBeans PHP Dev team, NetBeans is not the leading force here, it is the community.
