  I have an Xbox classic (not 360) that I use as a HTPC using XBMC. But today a rogue application activated "Xbox Live" mode, which updated the system to boot into Xbox Live instead of XBMC. I have no idea what Xbox Live is - I don't use the Xbox for gaming, only as a HTPC for media. So how do I get XBMC back on the Xbox? All instructions I've seen seem to start with "use FTP" - but the Xbox Live dashboard doesn't appear to have an FTP server.

• Running a small IPTV station

  I'm looking to run an iptv station for my dorm. I know I can serve multicast so that's not a problem. The station will serve out podcasts and other cc licensed content. The target endpoint is xbmc- a media center. So far I know that I need to serve an rtp stream over udp that's streaming an mpeg-4 avc main or high profile with aac ( or ac3 ?) audio. I've had some luck using vlc with vlm to stream but it seems limited. What are my other options?  Everything has to run on Linux- hopefully open source. How can I use playlists and not live streams? What are my software options?

• How to boot Windows XP using the image file(not the extracted image file)

  Is it possible to boot from an iso image file itself. Because when you burn it, it gets extracted. Because in linux you can just place the .iso file in a removable media and boot from it without extracting. Is it possible to make something like that in windows? • How can I setup a subnetwork using DDWRT and a 2Wire?

  Ok, I'm having a bit of trouble getting this setup. I'm not really sure what direction I need to be looking in. I am on ATT UVerse and I have to use their horrible 2Wire Modem/Router. But with this router, I have very limited control over my network and my wifi range is too small for my house. But, I have a hardwire ran to my TV which I have hooked into a switch and split the line to my PS3. The problem I'm having, is I don't know how to get the Buffalo DD-WRT setup as a subnetwork so that the PS3 can find my Media Server. • Windows XP: GNU find.exe moved my files and now they're lost

  I used a series of GNU find.exe commands to move media files to the current folder. Explorer show that the folders and files still exist in their original location but properties show zero size and files. I performed a chkdisk and that didnt help. Any ideas how to recover these files? • Realtek audio AC 97 5.1 on Windows 7: Terrible subwoofer quality

  I have a media center PC with on-board Realtek AC97 Audio. I have been using Windows XP for a couple of years with great audio quality. I just upgraded this PC with Windows 7 and installed the latest Realtek drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ At the testing screen, all the speakers works correctly (including subwoofer). Despite that, while playing any movie or music, the subwoofer quality is terrible. From it it just comes noises, in the correct rhythm but quite low and quite out of tone. I compensated the loudness by putting the other speakers lower but the sound of the subwoofer is really terrible. Is there anyone facing the same problem? Does anyone have a workaround for that? PS.: I had gone past the steps given in Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip but still I have a bad quality of sound.   Hi, I'm trying to use Windows XP Movie Maker, but when I try to import an AVI video, it shows an error telling me that it wasn't import due to an the fact that the codec wasn't available (I'm able to see the video using the windows media player) First, the error message suggested to enable the option "download codecs automatically" under "tools options general". I did it. But know the error tells me that the codec wasn't available and, if I already installed it, I should reinitialize movie maker. I also already did it... The error msg is: The file D:\movie1.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again. Any hint? TIA, Bob

• Windows DVD Maker on Windows 8?

  Something I really miss in Windows 8 is the Windows DVD Maker. I tried to get it running on Windows 8 by copying the DVD Maker directory from Windows 7 over to Windows 8. When I run it, I get the following error: I had hoped that this could be resolved by installing the Media Center add-on for Windows 8, but that did not have any effect. Several forum posts have suggested installing a codec pack such as the K-Lite codec pack, but I have always had bad experiences with those. I did, however, try to install the Shark007 codec pack, but that didn't work either. I also tried running the following commands (which did complete successfully, mind you) in an elevated command prompt, but they didn't change the outcome. regsvr32 msmpeg2vdec.dll regsvr32 msmpeg2adec.dll regsvr32 msmpeg2enc.dll I know there are other DVD making programs out there, some are even free, but the few I have tried do not compare to Windows DVD Maker's simplicity and beauty. Is there any way to make it work on Windows 8?

• Ubuntu only boots with USB plugged in

  I'm new to the Linux world so please bear with me! :-) I installed Ubuntu via USB drive onto my hard drive. If I boot the PC without the usb drive I used, Ubuntu will not load. After booting I can unplug without any consequences. I looked on the hard drive and there is a boot folder.   We have several users in the field with MacBooks. Because they're not always on the network, they save files locally to their notebooks. Normally I back things up by making quick copies to other media, but with the Macs they have the option to run Time Machine (and the way OS X is designed, they're heavily encouraged to use it.) Question; for maintaining Macs and data, how reliable and thorough is Time Machine for backup/restoration? Does it just back up the user's home directory, or can it restore the Mac if, for example, the drive fails? And are there options for "securing" the data like corporate backup software for Windows does, to encrypt the data on the time machine drive?

• Fast user switching is logging users off instead of switching users

  I have a netbook running Windows 8.1 Pro that will no longer allow more than one user to be logged in at the same time. The steps necessary to reproduce this are as follows: The current user presses WIN to bring up the start screen. The user clicks his name in the corner and a list of other users appears. As soon as one of the other names is clicked, the user is unceremoniously logged off without any prompts. This behavior seems to have started some time after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8. Before that point, everything worked fine and more than one user could be logged in at the same time. I've tried searching for others experiencing similar problems but this appears to be unique. • Scratched DVD keeps freezin when copying files, even with programs.

  Hi, I have a dvd with some family photos that is scratched, the problem is that when i try to copy stuff it reaches certain points and freezes, i'm assuming its the scratches / corrupt data. I've been trying several programs that are supposed to copy corrupt files from damaged media regardless, but they keep freezing when they reach the same points, so no different when with windows. Is there a way to fix the DVD? Or a really really good program that can do that without freezing / allowing windows to freeze? Please help, I don't have any copies of the photos and they are irreplaceable.

  When you take clips and turn them into computer playable files, whether .TS or .MOV or .MPG, .MP4, .VOB, etc., do you as the producer actually manually write into some field in a "Details" section of your video editor what the video length is, so that it can be read by the eventual user's video player? Or is this activity performed automatically by the video editor? I'm asking because: when a mouse is passed over a file line item in Windows 7 Shell (Windows Explorer) a little box is displayed where the mouse meets the file line item and provides simple name and size properties, one of which (if it's a media file) is run length. How does that figure get there into the file (later to be read be Windows or OS X)? Thanks for any info.

• Using Apple’s Bonjour service from .NET?

  I have an iPhone app that publishes through Bonjour. The Mac counterpart works, they sync and exchange data. Now I have to port that little Mac app to Windows. I’ve decided to go with .NET (because that’s what I know). The app is not complex, but I’m in the early stages. I need to browse/discover Bonjour services. For this task, I’ve downloaded Mono.Zeroconf and Apple’s latest SDK (which includes a couple of C# Samples). I’m not really pasting code because I’m really copy/pasting the samples. In fact, Mono.Zeroconf has a MZClient.exe that can be used to test “all the API”. My 1st test was -on the same box- open two cmd.exe and launch a MZclient registering a service and on the other, launch it and “discover it”. It doesn’t work. Here’s the server: C:\MZ>MZClient -v -p "_http._tcp 80 mysimpleweb” *** Registering name = 'mysimpleweb', type = '_http._tcp', domain = 'local.' *** Registered name = ‘mysimpleweb’ On the other terminal: c:\MZ>MZClient -v -t "_http._tcp" Creating a ServiceBrowser with the following settings: Interface = 0 (All) Address Protocol = Any Domain = local Registration Type = _http._tcp Resolve Shares = False Hit ^C when you're bored waiting for responses. And that’s it. Nothing happens. I’ve of course tried with different services to no avail. Even played a little bit with that domain thing. Remember this is the same box. I tried on another computer, because this was a VM inside OSX, so I went ahead and tried on a “pure” win XP. Nothing. note: I have Apple Bonjour Service (up and running) and also the Apple SDK (installed later). Given that this didn’t work, I went ahead and decided to try the Apple SDK which has an Interop and a few pre-compiled samples (and its source code). Short story, neither the mDSNBrowser.exe nor the SimpleChat.exe work/see/discover anything. My box is a Win7 under Parallels, but that doesn’t seem to be affecting anything, given that the native XP exhibits the same problems. What am I doing so awfully wrong?

• Windows XP Installation issue - cannot find hard disk

  A friend of mine gave me a laptop with Windows 8 installed and nothing else. I don't like it so I am trying to remove it by installing Windows XP. I have a windows XP installation CD that I have used before and worked fine, but didn't work when I tried to install it on the Windows 8 machine. It keeps telling me I don't have a drive to install to. Then I log into Windows 8 again and install check partitions. I found 2 and tried to make a new one but it will only let me make one of 69mb. Next, I tied to find a way to go back to XP with BCD install and try to set the boot loader for XP but it wasnt there. Somehow I deleted the bootloader for Windows 8 and now it asks me for a recovery tool for media. I am not familiar with the laptop specs, but it is a Toshiba with about 250GB storage, and above 1GHz processor.

• Home ZFS based NAS...What processor/chipset to use?

  So, I'm building a home/personal NAS. My plan is to expose both SMB fileshares for sharing files/media between hosts, but also to carve an iSCSI target LUN out of it for use by VMWare as a datastore. I want to use ZFS (software RAID) so that means I'll either be using FreeNAS, Solaris Express, or OpenIndiana. My question is basically: How much horsepower do I need? Obviously I/O is going to be my bottleneck but I want to be sure that I am not limiting my I/O because of a slow processor or chipset. So far the hardware plan is to use an Intel i3 and motherboard with one of the H87, Q87, or Z87 chipsets, a SAS controller (JBOD, no RAID) and if budget allows, I'm also hoping to get an SSD for the ZFS L2ARC and ZIL. Does anyone think I could get away with an Intel Atom or cheaper/less-capable processor/chipset than the i3 and [HQZ]87 listed above?
