  I'm using Visual Studio 2012 have just installed Windows 8 on my computer and tried to compile a game Im working on in XNA. When the game tried to build, I got the following errors: Error 12 Could not copy the file "C:\Users\Computer\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\bin\x86\Debug\Content\SkyDome\skycirrus01.xnb" because it was not found. Error 13 Could not copy the file "C:\Users\Computer\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\bin\x86\Debug\Content\Fonts\Arial.xnb" because it was not found. Error 14 Could not copy the file "C:\Users\Computer\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\bin\x86\Debug\Content\Fonts\ISOCP2.xnb" because it was not found. skycirrus01.xnb is actually a .fbx. *Arial.xmb* and ISOCP2.xmb are my spritefonts within my project. Prior to installing Windows 8 (store bought) my project compiled. Does anyone know how to convert these to .xnb files? I'm assuming that will make them compatible.

• Debugging .NET code called from X++ code in AX 2012

  A very intriguing issue came to me to debug .Net code called from X++ code in AX 2012. This was indeed a challenge to be nailed down. Luckily the tools and some concepts helped me to achieve this task. Here it goes... We need to do a seamless debugging from AX debugger to Visual Studio back and forth. To enable this we need to first see if the dll to be debug is present in GAC then we might need to uninstall it from it due to the order of preference .NET loads the assemblies. The assemblies are first loaded from GAC and then the runtime checks for Public and Private Assemblies. Since the assembly in GAC is always compiled with runtime optimizations it is difficult to debug. We need to unhook this assembly from GAC and then move further relying on >NET assembly loading patterns. Step 1: Remove the target assembly to debug from GAC. Before that stop all the AOS servers and close all the instances of programs which rely on AOT e.g. all clients and even visual studio now. Step 2: Build your sample code which is present in AOT in debug mode and get the dll file along with PDB files. Step 3: Place these files in the Server\..\Bin and Client\bin directories of AX installation. Step 4: Configure Visual Studio: Step 4.1: Configure Debugging Options. In Visual Studio Go to Debug -> Options and Settings -> Debug node -> General sub node and disable “Enable Just My Code (managed)” Step 4.2: Specify the symbol loading directory options. Specify the locations for Client bin and server bin directories of the installation, remember to specify the correct instance of Server bin directory corresponding to your AOS. Step 4.3: Configure the project for debugging Step 5: Ready to go place your breakpoints in X++ and in .Net wherever necessary before this process... Run the Visual studio project and it will invoke the AX client with your breakpoint hitting X++ code.. and when you do a step-in using F11 the Visual studio debugger will be active and from here onwards you would be able to debug the complete flow. Debugging in seamless manner across debuggers is really very good feature and mostly underutilized, but by doing so we can have improved troubleshooting and saves a hell lot of time..   Hi guys, just a quick question, I'm kind of confused. I've had set-up my own certification authority and I can create requests and signed them. But, I'm not sure, what I need to give to Apache, currently I've got: CA Private key CA Certificate Website Private key Website Certificate Website Certificate Request (I think I do not need it, but just to be clear) Until today I was using snakeoil certificate, but I've decided to have more SSL services, than CA looks as good solution, so my Apache was configured well, but now I am not sure what I shall provide to apache in following rules: SSLCertificateKeyFile /path/to/Website Private Key SSLCertificateFile /path/to/CA Certificate But than I got [Mon Dec 27 12:09:33 2010] [warn] RSA server certificate CommonName (CN) `EServer' does NOT match server name!? [Mon Dec 27 12:09:33 2010] [error] Unable to configure RSA server private key [Mon Dec 27 12:09:33 2010] [error] SSL Library Error: 185073780 error:0B080074:x509 certificate routines:X509_check_private_key:key values mismatch Something tells me than the warning is quite weird, because "EServer" is a common name of CA, so I think I shall not use CA Certificate in SSLCertificateFile, shall I? Do I need to create Certificate from Website private key or something else?

  Given that programmers are authors and write code to express abstract thoughts and concepts, and good code should be read by other programmers without difficulties and misunderstandings, should a programmer take writing lessons to write better code? Abstracting concepts and real world problems/entities is an important part of writing good code, and a good mastery of the language used for coding should allow the programmer to express his thoughts more easily, or in a better way. Besides, when trying to write or rewrite some code to make it better, much time can be spent in deciding the names for functions, variables or data structures. I think this could also help to avoid writing code with more than one meaning, often cause of misunderstanding between different programmers. Code should always express clearly its function unambiguously.

  So recently I have had to make the transition from the SharePoint 2007 codebase to SharePoint 2010 codebase. Needless to say there hasn't been much difficulty in the changeover. However in a set of code that I was playing around with and transitioning I did find one change that might cause some pain to others out there that have been programming against the PublishingWeb object in the Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing namespace. The 2007 snippet of code that work just fine in 2007 looks like: using (SPSite site = new SPSite(url)) using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb()) {      PublishingWeb publishingWeb = PublishingWeb.GetPublishingWeb(web);     publishingWeb.ExcludeFromNavigation(true, itemID);     publishingWeb.Update(); } The 2010 update to the code looks like: using (SPSite site = new SPSite(url)) using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb()) {     PublishingWeb publishingWeb = PublishingWeb.GetPublishingWeb(web);     publishingWeb.Navigation.ExcludeFromNavigation(true, itemID); //--Had to reference the Navigation object.     publishingWeb.Update(); } The purpose of the code is to keep a page from showing up on the global or current navigation when it is added to the pages library. However you see that the update to the 2010 codebase actually makes more "object" sense. It specifies that you are technically affecting the Navigation of the Publishing Web, instead of the Publishing Web itself.   I'm using VS2010 with XNA 4.0 and I'm trying to load an FBX model with texture on the screen. The problem I'm having is this error: Missing Asset: C:\Users\ChocoMan\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\XNAGame\Documents\Visual Studio\Projects\XNAGame\XNAGameContent\Textures\texture.bmp but the actual path to the texture is C:\Users\ChocoMan\Documents\Visual Studio\Projects\XNAGame\XNAGameContent\Textures\texture.bmp Also, when I linked the texture in Maya, I used the above address. Does anyone know why VS is looking for an incorrect address that doesnt exist?

• BizTalk 2009 - Project Creation Failed

  A couple of weeks ago I had some issue with my BizTalk Server 2009 development environment  which resulted in a reinstall of Visual Studio 2008 and the Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Following this reinstall I began to have problems when trying to create  BizTalk 2009 projects: Error Details: “Create BizTalk Project …. Project Creation Failed” It turns out that this is a known issue with BizTalk Server 2009 and Visual Studio 2008, whereby the installation of the Visual Studio Service Pack 1 can cause corruption to the BizTalk installation preventing the creation of any new projects. To resolve this issue go to control panel > add or remove programs > Microsoft BizTalk Server 2009 and select Change or Remove.  When the window opens choose “Repair”.  Upon completion you should once again be able to create BizTalk projects.

• Small change in MVVM Light Toolkit templates for Blend 4 RC

  Ah, the joy of new releases… You will find that the MVVM Light Toolkit works fine with Visual Studio 2010 RTM and Blend 4 RC except for a few adjustments: Blend templates The path to the Expression Blend 4 project templates changed. If you start Expression Blend 4 RC now, you will likely not see the MVVM Light templates in the New Project dialog.   New Project dialog with MVVM Light To restore the templates, follow the steps: Open Windows Explorer Navigate to C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Expression (or simply type My Documents in Windows Explorer and then open the Expression folder). Change the name of the “Blend 4 beta” folder into “Blend 4”. That’s it, you should now see the templates in the New Project dialog in Blend 4. Note that since the new name is “Blend 4”, I hope that I won’t need to do the same exercise when Blend 4 RTM is released! Windows Phone 7 templates Since the Windows Phone 7 tools are not ready yet for Visual Studio 2010 RTM and Blend 4 RC, the templates in the Silverlight for Windows Phone folders will not work. You will get an error if you try to create a new such project in the newly released environment. I hesitated to remove these templates from the current packages, but honestly that is a lot of trouble for a very short time before the tools for Windows Phone 7 are released (note: I don’t have any information as to when these tools will be released). In the mean time, just don’t create a WinPhone7 application. Reminder: If you want to write code for Windows Phone 7, you need to keep the Visual Studio 2010 RC as well as Expression Blend 4 beta. • JustCode Provides Reflector Alternative

  If you've been a loyal Reflector user, you've probably been exposed to the debacle surrounding RedGate's decision to no longer offer a free version.  Since then, the race has begun for a replacement with a provider that would stand by their promises to the community.  Mono has an ongoing free alternative, which has been available for a long time.  However, other vendors are stepping up to the plate, with their own offerings. If Not Reflector, Then What? One of these vendors is Telerik.  In their recent Q1 2011 release of JustCode, Telerik offers a decompilation utility rivaling what we've become accustomed to in Reflector.  Not only does Telerik offer a usable replacement, but they've (in my opinion), produced a product that integrates more naturally with visual Studio than any other product ever has.  Telerik's decompilation process is so easy that the accompanying demo in this post is blindingly short (except for the presence of verbose narrative). If you want to follow along with this demo, you'll need to have Telerik JustCode installed.  If you don't have JustCode yet, you can buy it or download a trial at the Telerik Web site . A Tall Tale; Prove It! With JustCode, you can view code in the .NET Framework or any other 3rd party library (that isn't well obfuscated).  This demo depends on LINQ to Twitter, which you can download from CodePlex.com and create a reference or install the package online as described in my previous post on NuGet.  Regardless of the method, you'll have a project with a reference to LINQ to Twitter.  Use a Console Project if you want to follow along with this demo. Note:  If you've created a Console project, remember to ensure that the Target Framework is set to .NET Framework 4.  The default is .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, which doesn't work with LINQ to Twitter.  You can check by double-clicking the Properties folder on the project and inspecting the Target Framework setting. Next, you'll need to add some code to your program that you want to inspect. Here, I add code to instantiate a TwitterContext, which is like a LINQ to SQL DataContext, but works with Twitter: var l2tCtx = new TwitterContext(); If you're following along add the code above to the Main method, which will look similar to this: using LinqToTwitter; namespace NuGetInstall { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var l2tCtx = new TwitterContext(); } } } The code above doesn't really do anything, but it does give something that I can show and demonstrate how JustCode decompilation works. Once the code is in place, click on TwitterContext and press the F12 (Go to Definition) key.  As expected, Visual Studio opens a metadata file with prototypes for the TwitterContext class.  Here's the result: Opening a metadata file is the normal way that Visual Studio works when navigating to the definition of a type where you don't have the code.  The scenario with TwitterContext happens because you don't have the source code to the file.  Visual Studio has always done this and you can experiment by selecting any .NET type, i.e. a string type, and observing that Visual Studio opens a metadata file for the .NET String type. The point I'm making here is that JustCode works the way Visual Studio works and you'll see how this can make your job easier. In the previous figure, you only saw prototypes associated with the code. i.e. Notice that the default constructor is empty.  Again, this is normal because Visual Studio doesn't have the ability to decompile code.  However, that's the purpose of this post; showing you how JustCode fills that gap. To decompile code, right click on TwitterContext in the metadata file and select JustCode Navigate -> Decompile from the context menu.  The shortcut keys are Ctrl+1.  After a brief pause, accompanied by a progress window, you'll see the metadata expand into full decompiled code. Notice below how the default constructor now has code as opposed to the empty member prototype in the original metadata: And Why is This So Different? Again, the big deal is that Telerik JustCode decompilation works in harmony with the way that Visual Studio works.  The navigate to functionality already exists and you can use that, along with a simple context menu option (or shortcut key) to transform prototypes into decompiled code. Telerik is filling the the Reflector/Red Gate gap by providing a supported alternative to decompiling code.  Many people, including myself, used Reflector to decompile code when we were stuck with buggy libraries or insufficient documentation.  Now we have an alternative that's officially supported by a company with an excellent track record for customer (developer) service, Telerik.  Not only that, JustCode has several other IDE productivity tools that make the deal even sweeter. • Multiple instances of Intellitrace.exe process

  Not so long ago I was confronted with a very bizarre problem… I was using visual studio 2010 and whenever I opened up the Test Impact view I would suddenly see my pc perf go down drastically…  Investigating this problem, I found out that hundreds of “Intellitrace.exe” processes had been started on my system and I could not close them as they would re-start as soon as I would close one.  That was very weird.  So I knew it had something to do with the Test Impact but how can this feature and Intellitrace.exe going crazy be related?  After a bit of thinking I remembered that a teammate (Etienne Tremblay, ALM MVP) had told me once that he had seen this issue before just after installing a MOCKING FRAMEWORK that uses the .NET Profiler API…  Apparently there’s a conflict between the test impact features of Visual Studio and some mocking products using the .NET profiler API…  Maybe because VS 2010 also uses this feature for Test Impact purposes, I don’t know… Anyways, here’s the fix…  Go to your VS 2010 and click the “Test” menu.  Then go to the “Edit Test Settings” and choose EACH test setting file applying the following actions (normally 2 files being “Local” and TraceAndTestImpact”: -          Select the Data And Diagnostic option on the left -          Make sure that the ASP.NET Client Proxy for Intellitrace and Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Make sure that the Test Impact option is NOT SELECTED -          Save and close   Edit Test Settings   Problem solved…  For me having to choose between the “Test Impact” features and the “Mocking Framework” was a no brainer, bye bye test impact…  I did not investigate much on this subject but I feel there might be a way to have them both working by enabling one after the other in a precise sequence…  Feel free to leave a comment if you know how to make them both work at the same time!   Hope this helps someone out there !

  We've been experiencing some problems with our Subversion server after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04. When trying to access a repository, regardless of client (I've tried git-svn and svn on Windows as well as svn on Ubuntu 10.04, from different computers and network locations), I get a 400 bad request. • VSDB to SSDT Series : Introduction

  At the office, we extensively use VS2010 SQL Server 2008 Database Projects and SQL Server 2008 Server Projects  in our Visual Studio 2010 solutions. With Visual Studio 2012, those types of projects are replaced by the  SQL Server Database Project  using the SSDT (SQL Server Data Tools) technology. I started investigating the shift from Visual Studio 2010 to Visual Studio 2012 and specifically what needs to be done concerning those database projects in terms of painless migration, continuous integration and standalone deployment. I will write my findings in a series of 4 short articles: Part 1 will be about the database projects migration process and the cleaning up that ensues Part 2 will be about creating SQL Server 2008 Server Projects equivalents with the new SSDT project type Part 3 will introduce a replacement to the vsdbcmd.exe command used for deployment in our continuous integration process Part 4 will explain how to create standalone packages of SSDT projects for deployment on non accessible servers (such as a production server)

• Anyone had any issues getting a disk to start on a Walrus storage sytem?

  Hi folks, I'm trying to get a Eucalyptus system up and running and have managed to get the cloud controller and node controller running fine, with an instance running in the cloud system, but without any persistent storage. When I try and create a volume I get euca-create-volume -s 10 -z cluster1 VOLUME vol-5F5D0659 10 creating 2010-05-31T09:10:11.408Z but when I try and see the volume I get euca-describe-volumes VOLUME vol-5F5D0659 10 cluster1 failed 2010-05-31T09:10:11.408Z VOLUME vol-5FE9065E 10 cluster1 failed 2010-05-31T09:02:56.721Z I've dug all over the place, but can't seem to turn up a reason the creation would fail or where to start looking to see what the issue might be. Anyone have any ideas where to even start looking for the answer to this? Ta Peter.
