• How to get Autocad working with Wine?

  I am trying 3 years now installing Autocad,*3ds Max* and Revit architecture on Ubuntu with wine! Every year I am very optimistic 'cause I see the new wine versions already improved. So, now I am starting again in a clean Ubuntu installation to install Autocad 2013 with wine 1.4. I am not trying to have an answer only for me, but I want this community to try and finally we can achieve that! The winetricks have already net framework 4 to install which is the reason I have not already ran to the past Autocad. So, I would like to remove completely my windows 7 partition from my pc and go on a linux machine without loosing the powerfull architectural programms.I know all about Blender and staff so I just want you to help find a solution on that, because I know there is a solution! Maybe I will have to learn all the c++ or python etc. But I am sure that a solution can come with the help of all of us! Any suggestion about this problem will be very nice and helpfull.

• How to get initial API right using TDD?

  This might be a rather silly question as I am at my first attempts at TDD. I loved the sense of confidence it brings and generally better structure of my code but when I started to apply it on something bigger than one-class toy examples, I ran into difficulties. Suppose, you are writing a library of sorts. You know what it has to do, you know a general way of how it is supposed to be implemented (architecture wise), but you keep "discovering" that you need to make changes to your public API as you code. Perhaps you need to transform this private method into strategy pattern (and now need to pass a mocked strategy in your tests), perhaps you misplaced a responsibility here and there and split an existing class. When you are improving upon existing code, TDD seems a really good fit, but when you are writing everything from scratch, the API you write tests for is a bit "blurry" unless you do a big design up front. What do you do when you already have 30 tests on the method that had its signature (and for that part, behavior) changed? That is a lot of tests to change once they add up.

• Forum engine with full LDAP integration [closed]

  We are looking for forum engine which may actually maintain user data into LDAP, maybe via mods. Core point is about ability to maintain the data, i.e. all user profile settings, like nickname, password, email, avatar, birthday and others (preferably configurable). One example of good ldap integration, level of which I'm expecting, is drupal's ldap integration, which allows to map any user's attribute into ldap and keeps it in sync with database. Year ago I've done a small research over existing Free&FOSS engines and find out few forum engines with LDAP integration, namely SFM, phpBB and something else. The most maintained solution were provided by phpBB3, which supports LDAP integration out-of-box, but it is unable to sync data with changes in LDAP server made by other software. Actually it wasn't even propagating changes back, I'm not saying about ability to map additional attributes (other than name/password/email). Also, I haven't found any forum with architecture which have proper abstraction over user settings, thus I doubt that this engines (including phpBB) are possible to mod such functionality without introducing dramatic changes into core codebase. More recent research showed that even some commercial software, like IPB is unable to keep it's database synced with LDAP directory and map additional attributes. In other words, all support I've seen so far is simple user creation upon first user's login, which is not good for us, as forum is not primary site and should not maintain it's own users base (to reduce risk of possible collisions). LDAP import is required due to many other services (ftp, email, jabber, drupal site) using same users base. Currently we have forum embedded into Drupal site, but we are unsatisfied with it's features. BTW, we are using Linux and this is not duplicate of this question, as it's author seems to be satisfied with behaviour described above. So, my question is: Are there any (preferably FOSS&free) forum engines that may import, export, keep in sync, or otherwise integrade with LDAP user database (preferably with ability to map additional fields to ldap attributes)?

• Reading Open Source Projects

  About my programming knowledge: I have basic knowledge of programming. Have never worked in a team project. Have done, only, a couple of small solo projects. Problem: Consider a typical open source project. We want to know about the project, so that we can contribute, test it, just out of curiosity, etc. The documentations do not describe the code architecture, usually, so RTFM(!) wouldn't apply here. They usually tend to describe how to use the software, not how it is designed. Mailing Lists in big projects are very crowded. Tens of e-mails are send in just an hour. also, following the mailing list to know the project is like understanding a film when you have arrived late, when half of the film is gone or even worse. Obviously, the code is not like a novel. So, you can't start from downloading the source code and just "start from the first page and so on"! Question: How should one understand open source project? What are the steps to do in an open source project, to understand how the whole thing works and get into speed with the "under the hood"?

  Oracle VM Servers for SPARC saw a few improvements in Ops Center 12.2. In addition to brownfield support, we've made a number of enhancements to let you add OVM Servers for SPARC to a Server Pool and enable migration of their guests. -When you discover an OVMSS Control Domain and manage it with an Ops Center Agent, its guests are automatically discovered as well. The guest metadata is initially put in the local metadata library in the /guests directory, but you can move it from one library to another to enable migration.-Once you've discovered an OVMSS control domain, you can add it to a server pool, even if it's already configured and running logical domains. Even if live migration between OVMSS systems isn't possible due to CPU incompatibilities, you can still put them in a server pool together and enable guest recovery by configuring the CPU architecture of the guest domain as generic. -You can mark a guest's storage as shared to indicate that it's available to other managed OVM Server systems with the same back-end name. This lets you use storage not fully managed in an Ops Center library as part of guest migration. Put together, these enhancements make it much easier to manage and maintain OVMSS guests.

• Using unordered_multimap as entity and component storage

  The Setup I've made a few games (more like animations) using the Object Oriented method with base classes for objects that extend them, and objects that extend those, and found I couldn't wrap my head around expanding that system to larger game ideas. So I did some research and discovered the Entity-Component system of designing games. I really like the idea, and thoroughly understood the usefulness of it after reading Byte54's perfect answer here: Role of systems in entity systems architecture. With that said, I have decided to create my current game idea using the described Entity-Component system. Having basic knowledge of C++, and SFML, I would like to implement the backbone of this entity component system using an unordered_multimap without classes for the entities themselves. Here's the idea: An unordered_mulitmap stores entity IDs as the lookup term, while the value is an inherited Component object. Examlpe: ____________________________ |ID |Component | ---------------------------- |0 |Movable | |0 |Accelable | |0 |Renderable | |1 |Movable | |1 |Renderable | |2 |Renderable | ---------------------------- So, according to this map of objects, the entity with ID 0 has three components: Movable, Accelable, and Renderable. These component objects store the entity specific data, such as the location, the acceleration, and render flags. The entity is simply and ID, with the components attached to that ID describing its attributes. Problem I want to store the component objects within the map, allowing the map have full ownership of the components. The problem I'm having, is I don't quite understand enough about pointers, shared pointers, and references in order to get that set up. How can I go about initializing these components, with their various member variables, within the unordered_multimap? Can the base component class take on the member variables of its child classes, when defining the map as unordered_multimap<int, component>? Requirements I need a system to be able to grab an entity, with all of its' attached components, and access members from the components in order to do the necessary calculations and reassignments for position, velocity, etc. Need a clarification? It'll include policies, best practices, clarifications, and lots of other stuff which I hope you'll find useful as you get up to speed with Solaris 11 and IPS.   Let's start with a version of my Solaris 11 Customer Maintenance Lifecycle presentation which I gave at this year's Oracle Open World and at the recent Deutsche Oracle Anwendergruppe (DOAG - German Oracle Users Group) conference in Nürnberg. Some of you may be familiar with my Patch Corner blog, http://blogs.oracle.com/patch , which fulfilled a similar purpose for System V [five] Release 4 (SVR4) based Solaris releases, such as Solaris 10 and below. Since maintaining a Solaris 11 system is quite different to maintaining a Solaris 10 system, I thought it prudent to start this 2nd parallel blog for Solaris 11. Actually, I have an ulterior motive for starting this separate blog.  Since IPS is a single tier packaging architecture, it doesn't have any patches, only package updates.  I've therefore banned the word "patch" in Solaris 11 and introduced a swear box to which my colleagues must contribute a quarter [$0.25] every time they use the word "patch" in a public forum.  From their Oracle Open World presentations, John Fowler owes 50 cents, Liane Preza owes $1.25, and Bart Smaalders owes 75 cents.  Since I'm stinging my colleagues in what could be a lucrative enterprise, I couldn't very well discuss IPS best practices on a blog called "Patch Corner" with a URI of http://blogs.oracle.com/patch.  I simply couldn't afford all those contributions to the "patch" swear box. :) Feel free to let me know what topics you'd like covered - just post a comment in the comment box on the blog. • Difficulty / Process for mobile 2D multiplayer RPG game

  I'm looking to develop a 2D multiplayer RPG game for Android, with a bird's eye view similar to that of zelda/pokemon. The game is very simple in all ways since my intent is for thousands of players to occupy the same world which I imagine requires good performance. However, I am unsure about the performance requirements of two properties: the tile map that is used as a background is dynamic (interactive). For example, a player steps in the water, and the water turns black. Every tile in the game does this. the tile map is the same object used for all players, but it is displayed differently on each user's mobile device, even though the players exist in the same world. For example, the water that turned black is displayed as red on all other players' screens. I have knowledge of java, but almost none regarding game dev. tools. Is there a best process for these requirements? Should I develop in pure java, or use some tool like Slick2D etc.? How performance intensive are these properties, if even possible? Edit: There are no collisions in the game or difficult animations, I imagining simply changing colors of the tiles like in the examples, and a client-server architecture

• Determinism in multiplayer simulation with Box2D, and single computer

  I wrote a small test car driving multiplayer game with Box2D using TCP server-client communcations. I ran 1 instance of server.exe and 2 instance of client.exe on the same machine that I code and compile the executables. I type inputs (WASD for a simple car movement) into one of the 2 clients and I can get both clients to update the simulation. There are 2 cars in the simulation. As long as the cars do not collide, I get the same identical output on both client.exe. I can run the car(s) around for as long as I could they still update the same. However, if I start to collide the cars, very quickly they go out of sync. My tools: Windows 7, C++, MSVS 2010, Box2D, freeGlut. My Psuedocode: // client.exe void timer(int value) { tcpServer.send(my_inputs); foreach(i = player including myself) inputs[i] = tcpServer.receive(); foreach(i = player including myself) players[i].process(inputs[i]); myb2World.step(33, 8, 6); // Box2D world step simulation foreach(i = player including myself) renderer.render(player[i]); glutTimerFunc(33, timer, 0); } // server.exe void serviceloop { while(all clients alive) { foreach(c = clients) tcpClients[c].receive(&inputs[c]); // send input of each client to all clients foreach(source = clients) { foreach(dest = clients) { tcpClients[dest].send(inputs[source]); } } } } I have read all over the internet and SE the following claims (paraphrased): Box2D is deterministic as long as floating point architecture/implementation is the same. (For any deterministic engine) Determinism is gauranteed if playback of recorded inputs is on the same machine with exe compiled using same compiler and machine. Additionally my server.exe and client.exe gameloop is single thread with blocking socket calls and fixed time step. Question: Can anyone explain what I did wrong to get different Box2D output?

• Very Cool &ndash; Miami 311 System for tracking citizen service requests (Windows Azure, Silverlight

  Having grown up in South Florida this short, but very enlightening, video explaining how the City of Miami has implemented a 311 citizen service request system using Windows Azure, Silverlight and Bing Maps definitely caught my attention. Miami311 The Miami311 System is a Windows Azure/Silverlight-based solution which enables City of Miami citizens report and track issues reported to city management. The system uses Bing Maps to plot the location and relevant information about each issue reported. Citizens now have the ability to easily see the status of the issue without having to call the city office. What I found interesting were a couple of benefits that a metropolitan area such as Miami can take advantage of in Windows Azure cloud-based solution. For the city of Miami, both benefits center around the weather. Of course the threat of a hurricane is a real issue in South Florida and what better way to make sure your site stays up during a hurricane then to have the site hosted far away from the eye of the storm. Using a Windows Azure cloud-based architecture the City of Miami is able to host the application within the Microsoft data centers safely away from any hurricane passing through South Florida. The second benefit is the inherent scalability of a Windows Azure based solution. During a severe weather event like thunderstorms or even worse, a hurricane, downed trees and power lines are a commonly reported problem. Being able to quickly scale up the computing resources required to handle the spike in citizens reporting these types of problems on the site is a huge benefit. Once the weather event has passed and downed tree reports begin to subside they can quickly reverse the process and scale the system back down to pre-storm levels. It’s kind of day-to-day kind of stuff but very cool stuff nonetheless. Have a day. :-|

• Update Since Microsoft/PSC Office Open XML Case Study

  In 2009 Microsoft released a case study about a project that we had done using the OOXML SDK 1.0 for Research Directors Inc.  Since that time Microsoft has released version 2.0 of the SDK and PSC has done significant development with it.  Below are some of the mile stones we have reached since the original case study. At the time of the original case study two report types had been automated to output as PowerPoint presentations.  Now that the all the main products have been delivered we have added three reports with Word document outputs and five more reports with PowerPoint outputs. One improvement we made over the original application was to create a PowerPoint Add-In which allows the users to tag a slide.  These tags along with the strongly typed SDK 2.0 allows for the code to use LINQ to easily search for slides in the template files.  This allows for a more flexible architecture base on assembling a presentation from copied slide extracted from the template. The new library we created also enabled us to create two new Word based reports in two weeks.  The library we created abstracts the generation of the documents from the business logic and the data retrieval.  The key to this is the mark up.  Content Controls are a good method for identifying sections of a template to be modified or replaced.  Join this with the concept of all data being generically either scalar or two dimensional and the code becomes more generic. • Finally! Entity Framework working in fully disconnected N-tier web app

  Entity Framework was supposed to solve the problem of Linq to SQL, which requires endless hacks to make it work in n-tier world. Not only did Entity Framework solve none of the L2S problems, but also it made it even more difficult to use and hack it for n-tier scenarios. It’s somehow half way between a fully disconnected ORM and a fully connected ORM like Linq to SQL. Some useful features of Linq to SQL are gone – like automatic deferred loading. If you try to do simple select with join, insert, update, delete in a disconnected architecture, you will realize not only you need to make fundamental changes from the top layer to the very bottom layer, but also endless hacks in basic CRUD operations. I will show you in this article how I have  added custom CRUD functions on top of EF’s ObjectContext to make it finally work well in a fully disconnected N-tier web application (my open source Web 2.0 AJAX portal – Dropthings) and how I have produced a 100% unit testable fully n-tier compliant data access layerfollowing the repository pattern. http://www.codeproject.com/KB/linq/ef.aspx In .NET 4.0, most of the problems are solved, but not all. So, you should read this article even if you are coding in .NET 4.0. Moreover, there’s enough insight here to help you troubleshoot EF related problems. • How should I determine my rates for writing custom software?

  For a custom software that will likely take a year or more to develop, how would I go about determining what to charge as a consultant? I'm having a hard time coming up with a number, and searches online are providing vastly different numbers (between $55/hr and $300/hr). I don't want to shoot too low because it's going to take me so much time (and I'm deferring my education for this project). I also don't want to shoot too high and get unpleasant looks and demand for justification. FWIW I live in Canada, and have approx. 10 years of development experience. I've read the "take your salary and divide it by 1000" rule of thumb, but the thing is I don't have a salary. Currently I'm just doing fairly small programming tasks for a friend who is starting a marketing company, pricing each task fairly arbitrarily. I don't know what I would make over the course of a year doing it, but it would be incredibly low. My responsibilities for the project would be the architecture, programming, database, server, and UX to some degree. It's going to be a public facing web service so I will also need to put a lot of effort into security and scalability. Any advice or experience?

• The Developers Conference 2012: Presentation about CEP & BAM

  This year I had the pleasure again of being one of the speakers in the TDC ("The Developers Conference") event. I have spoken in this event for three years from now. This year, the main theme of the SOA track was EDA ("Event-Driven Architecture") and I decided to delivery a comprehensive presentation about one of my preferred personal subjects: Real-time using Complex Event Processing. The theme of the presentation was "Business Intelligence in Real-time using CEP & BAM" and I would like to share here the presentation that I have done. The material is in Portuguese since was an Brazilian event that happened in São Paulo. Once my presentation has a lot of videos, I decided to share the material as a Youtube video, so you can pause, rewind and play again how many times you want it.
