• Apache fop-0.95 error on FopFactory.newInstance() command

  I am using Apache fop-0.95 to build pdf files from a JSP web application on IBM iSeries V5R4 using Websphere 6.0. Everything works perfect in my development using Websphere Development Studio client. When I put the application on the server, I get an error at this line. FopFactory fopFactory = FopFactory.newInstance(); The error is: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: javax/imageio/ImageIO Does anyone know how I can fix this error? All of the fop class files are part of the EAR file. The files were installed to the projects \WEB-INF\lib directory. I have added the fop jar files to the classpath, using the admin console. I am running IBM WebSphere Application Server - Express, 6.0.2.9 Build Number: cf90614.22 on IBM iSeries V5R4

• ASP.NET MVC ViewModelBuilder Suggestions

  For anything but trival view models, I use a view model builder that handles the responsibility of generating the view model object. Right now, I use constructor injection of the builders into my controllers but this smells a little since the builder is really dependent upon which action method is being executed. I have two ideas in mind. The first one would involve a custom ActioFilter allowing me to decorate each action method with the appropriate builder to use. The second would be to add an override of the View method that is open to accepting a generic. This is what my code currently looks like. Note, the builder get injected via the ctor. • XSLT Document function returns empty result on Maven POM

  Greetings! I want to extract some properties from different Maven POMs in a XSLT via the document function. The script itself works fine but the document function returns an empty result for the POM as long as I have the xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0" in the project tag. If I remove it, everything works fine. Any idea how the make this work while leaving the xmlns attribute where it belongs or why this doesn't work with the attribute in place? • Performance benefits of upgrading Richfaces to newer version

  I have a client that's running an application based on JBoss 4.0.5, Seam 1.2 and RichFaces 3.0.1. Their system is having performance problems due to the fact that a lot of data is coming back from the server to be displayed on screen and it seems like the rendering of that data is taking forever. The data brought back is displayed in a tabbed interface, but the tabs aren't currently being loaded individually, but all at once. I'm trying to build up a case to present to the client on the benefits of upgrading to never version of RichFaces, which, as I understand it, has added a great number of features related to tabbed panels and being able to use ajax to page the data and load the chunks you actually need to display at the moment, and not the rest that's in other tabs. The move to a newer version of RichFaces will also result in never versions of Jboss and Seam, as the current production build of RichFaces 3.2.1 requires JSF 1.2. IF anyone has some suggestions or experience on performance of current versions RichFaces, paging, etc, I would really appreciate some feedback.

  I'm trying to get basic http authentication working on my Rails app. I'm offering a simple REST interface served by a Rails server, only xml/json output. • Disable debug output in libxml2 and xmlsec

  Hi, In my software, I use libxml2 and xmlsec to manipulate (obviously) XML data structures. I mainly use XSD schema validation and so far, it works well. When the data structure input by the client doesn't match the XSD schema, libxml2 (or xmlsec) output some debug strings to the console. Here is an example: Entity: line 1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found DUMMY<?xml ^ While those strings are useful for debugging purposes, I don't want them to appear and polute the console output in the released software. So far, I couldn't find an official way of doing this. Do you know how to suppress the debug output or (even better) to redirect it to a custom function ? Many thanks.

  If I run a package from the Management Studio, and specify a configuration file, everything works as expected. However if I try and run the package from the command prompt with DTExec I get the error: Cannot load the XML configuration file. The XML configuration file may be malformed or not valid. The command I'm using to execute the package is: dtexec /conf ConfigurationDemo.dtsConfig /f Package.dtsx I am running the dtexec from the folder where these two files reside. Is there an addtional switch or something that must used to get dtexec to behave the same was at the management Stduio in launching a package?

• Which language/framework to use for this desktop internet application?

  I'd like to experiment with a new language/framework to work on some desktop tools for myself, which will do tasks related to internet services. I.e. i'd like to to monitor some of my servers for http or icmp response, also parse xml responses. I have experience with php, lua, mysql, and basic knowledge of java and c++. I'm also interested in exploring multithreading for this, background tasks and a responsive gui do need that as i have read. Being a private project, i certainly want to learn something new, but i don't have that much free time. The question for you would be which language and what framework to choose that could help me with this tasks: lightweight + fast gui (windows only would be ok, platform-independent even better) network/socket support, html module would be appreciated htmlview support xml "parsing" support (xpath or something like the phpish DOMDocument class) threading support Free software would be nice, but paying some bucks won't hurt me if it really helps the case.

  I'm using tagsoup to clean some HTML I'm scraping from the internet, and I'm getting the following error when parsing through pages with comments: The data "- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - " is not legal for a JDOM comment: Comment data cannot start with a hyphen. • Visual Studio 2005 "Add Web Deployment Project..." not showing up for web application projects.

  I downloaded the Web Deployment Project plug-in for Visual Studio 2005. I installed it. I have a project that I am working on that is a Web Application Project. The Add Web Deployment Project Build menu selection is not in the Build Menu or Solution Explorer. If I create a raw test Web Site Project, the menu item magically appears. Is this by design or am I missing something. Also, I am completely up to date on all the VS 2005 updates.

• What am I missing about WCF?

  I've been developing in MS technologies for longer than I care to remember at this stage. When .NET arrived on the scene I thought they hit the nail on the head and with each iteration and version I thought their technologies were getting stronger and stronger and looked forward to each release. However, having had to work with WCF for the last year I must say I found the technology very difficult to work with and understand. Initially it's quite appealing but when you start getting into the guts of it, configuration is a nightmare, having to override behaviours for message sizes, number of objects contained in a messages, the complexity of the security model, disposing of proxies when faulted and finally moving back to defining interfaces in code rather than in XML. It just does not work out of the box and I think it should. We found all of the above issues while either testing ourselves or else when our products were out on site. I do understand the rationale behind it all, but surely they could have come up with simpler implementation mechanism. I suppose what I'm asking is, Am I looking at WCF the wrong way? What strengths does it have over the alternatives? Under what circumstances should I choose to use WCF? OK Folks, Sorry about the delay in responding, work does have a nasty habbit of get in the way somethimes :) Some clarifications My main paint point with WCF I suppose falls down into the following areas While it does work out of the box, your left with some major surprises under the hood. As pointed out above basic things are restricted until they are overridden Size of string than can be passed can't be over 8K Number of objects that can be passed in a single message is restricted Proxies not automatically recovering from failures The amount of configuration while it's there is a good thing, but understanding it all and what to use what and under which circumstances can be difficult to understand. Especially when deploying software on site with different security requirements etc. When talking about configuration, we've had to hide lots of ours in a back-end database because security and network people on-site were trying to change things in configuration files without understanding it. Keeping the configuration of the interfaces in code rather than moving to explicitly defined interfaces in XML, which can be published and consumed by almost anything. I know we can export the XML from the assembley, but it's full of rubbish and certain code generators choke on it. I know the world moves on, I've moved on a number of times over the last (ahem 22 years I've been developing) and am actively using WCF, so don't get me wrong, I do understand what it's for and where it's heading. I just think there should be simplier configuration/deployment options available, easier set-up and better management for configuration (SQL config provider maybe, rahter than just the web.config/app.config files).   I am building a Silverlight 4 desktop client to show streaming video from a site that is login based. So that website has a Silverlight player that does streaming video, the player is behind a login sesion, so just by getting the url from fiddler and trying to play it in my Silverlight 4 desktop client won't work. Actually after that, I want to build a Windows Media Center plugin to build a Netflix-like client, that allows login through WMC and then allows you to watch streaming video. Any pointers on how to go about doing any of this?

  I'm creating a service reference to a web service written in Java. The generated classes now follow the Java casing convention used in the web service, for example class names are camelCase rather than PascalCase. Is there a way to get the desired casing from the service reference? CLARIFICATION: With WSE based services, one could modify the generated Reference.cs to provide .NET standard casing and use XmlElementAttribute to map to the Java naming presented by the external web service, like this: [System.Xml.Serialization.XmlElementAttribute("resultType", Form=System.Xml.Schema.XmlSchemaForm.Unqualified)] [System.Runtime.Serialization.DataMember] public virtual MyResultType ResultType { ... } Not terribly maintenance-friendly without writing custom code to either generate the proxy code or modify it after it's been generated. What I'm after is one or more options to present a WCF generated client proxy to calling applications using the .NET casing conventions, achieving the same as I did previously with WSE. Hopefully with less manual effort.

  Hi, I need to automate the migration from an Access (2003) to an SQL Server DB (2005 or 2008). The upsizing should be done automatically as part of a build process. I need that because there are 2 versions of the software, a single user rich client and a web version. Access DB is used for single user to minimize setup effort, SQL Server to improve performance and scaling with many simultanious users. Access should be the "leading" DB, meaning devs do changes in Access DB and those are propagated to the SQL server within the build process. Many changes will occur, so doing it manually is not an option. I am new to the Microsoft world, so I dont know appropriate tools for that. What tools can I use and how?   I have two projects in Eclipse with Java and Python code, using Jython. Also I'm using PyDev. One project can import and use the xml module just fine, and the other gives the error ImportError: No module named xml. As far as I can tell, all the project properties are set identically. The working project was created from scratch and the other comes from code checked out of an svn repository and put into a new project. What could be the difference?

• Using info.plist for storing target-specific values for a multi-target app

  I have a multi-target iPhone app which currently includes a header file with constant definitions that are conditionally included at build time depending on which target is being built. However, I was wondering if it might be better to instead include this information in the info.plist for the build, as this generally holds target-specific meta, so logically seems more appropriate. Therefore, my questions are: Is it acceptable to include custom (non-Apple defined) keys in the info.plist file? Is this a suitable place to include meta for the app which changes between targets?

• How can I copy files with names containing spaces and UNICODE, when using a shell script?

  I have a list of files that I'm trying to copy and move (using cp and mv) in a bash shell script. The problem that I'm running into, is that I can't get either command to recognize a huge number of files, seemingly because the filenames contain spaces and/or unicode characters. I couldn't find any switches to decode/re-encode these characters. Instead, for example, if I copy "file name.xml", I get "*.xml" and a script error that the file wasn't found for my result. Does anyone know settings or commands that will deal with these files?
