  This questions is about what things I can do to reduce the size that Windows 8 uses. Background For example: At present and with only one programm installed (MS Access 2007) I have a about 15GB of my harddisk space used. I have little space (its a 17 GB partition on a SSD disk). I would like solutions that are like: Remove files not really needed (drivers not actually needed in the system) Help files not really needed (documentation) pagefile.sys (assuming I would have 4GB ram and no real need for swaping) hiberfil.sys (used for hibernate and sleep... I need that. though I would regain about 4GB space) At best I would like to delete mostly files that I would most likely not need. Though I have no good idea where to start there. Since my setup (hardware will not change) I would be willing to delete all the drivers that windows 8 has for hardware I do not have.... The question is about ways to reduce the space that Windows 8 uses.

• Can I create an Infrastructure access point from built-in WiFi (as opposed to Ad-Hoc) on Windows XP?

  I want to use my Windows XP laptop as an access point. What I am trying to achieve is possible under Windows 7 with a myriad of utilities, but the wireless driver stack was different before Windows 7 and those specific APIs don't exist on XP. The reason behind me wanting to do this is that I would like my Android phone to be able to connect via WiFi to a network that is only hard-wired (reverse tethering). Unfortunately, my Android device (Galaxy S Captivate) does not support ad-hoc networks without a serious amount of screwing around. Is it possible to create an "Infrastructure" network with my Dell Latitude D830's built-in WiFi - a "Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Card", which I am assuming is probably rebadged Broadcom, or is there some fundamental difference between a wireless adapter and an access point that would prevent this?

• Powering off sends me to "Launch Windows Repair" automatically instead! What do I do?

  With Windows 2008 R2 Server, I noticed that if I remotely reboot the machine (because it is hung or I think it is hung), the server, when it restarts, defaults to "Launch Windows Repair" (or something similar) rather than "Start Windows Normally". To change it, I have to trek down to the server room and change the boot up otherwise it will go into an endless loop (because I don't have the setup media and DVD-ROM installed). This seems to be new with 2008 R2 because I have not seen it elsewhere. What do I do? How can I remove this or change the default?

• How to copy data (clone) from one partition to another in Windows XP?

  I have installed a new hard drive in our PC running Windows XP and I wonder how to transfer the data from the old (small) data partition to the new (large) one. My question concerns only a data partition containing files and folders (not the boot partition with the Operating System files!) Is it ok to just copy the folders in the Windows XP Explorer to the new partition? Could anything be lost this way (hidden folders, metadata, ..)? What is the best way to clone a data partition in Windows XP?

• How can I prevent Windows 7 from automatically changing the firewall settings (turning it back on) when changing network location?

  By default, the firewall is turned on on all my workstations. I want to disable it. That works just fine. However, if Windows thinks there is a change in the Network Location, the "Set Network Location" dialog appears. At that point my Firewall is still disabled. When my users click on any of the three options "Work", "Home" or "Public", Windows immediately changes the firewall settings and turns it back on. Is it possible to stop Windows 7 from automatically turning the firewall back on when you change the Network Location? If yes, how could I perform this task?

  I have searched many forums and tried a lot of suggested solutions but nothing works. I am sure that installation disk is ok cause it worked before (I was able to install Windows7 on my other notebook - MSI). What happens is: I boot with installation CD, it says 'Windows is loading files...' Then it says Starting Windows (mouse laser works at that moment). Then I get the screen with window which has a title "Install Windows" with options to choose language, keyboard, etc. and asking me to click next. But, the problem is that at that moment mouse and keyboard don't work at all. Mouse's laser is turned off, and if I press CAPS LOCK on keyboard it doesn't turn the LED on. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

• Can time skew on Windows be reduced to +/- 5ms?

  A number of our Windows workstations, running ntpd, simply cannot keep time. Our Linux workstations and servers running the same ntpd config don't have this problem, they can stay within +/- 5ms of skew. The Windows hosts easily drift to seconds and sometimes minutes apart. This is a problem for us. The only common factor we have been able to isolate is that the hosts that can't keep time are running Windows. Is there something fundamentally impossible with what we're trying to do?

For starters, I can get better non-batch insert performance from SQL Server Express. What really struck me, however, was the slow performance of the find_nnnn queries. Why is retrieving data from MongoDB so slow? What am I missing? Edit: This was all on the local machine, no network latency or anything. MongoDB's CPU usage ran at about 75% the entire time the test was running. Edit 2: Also, I ran a trace on the benchmark program and confirmed that 50% of the CPU time spent was waiting for MongoDB to return data, so it's not a performance issue with the C# driver.

• Mercurial over ssh client and server on Windows

  I'm trying to configure Mercurial for use with both a windows server (freeSSHd) and client (both command line and TortoiseHG). I'm using the most recent versions of everything... all downloaded in the past few days. Using public key auth, I have been able to get connected to the server and I'm able to use plink to execute "hg version" and get a response, but when I try to clone a repository from the ssh server the command appears to hang. Running with -v yields: hg -v clone ssh://<username>@<server>//hg/repositoryA testRepositoryA running "plink.exe -i "<path to private key file>" <username>@<server> "hg -R /hg/repositoryA serve --stdio"" with nothing more forthcoming. Running the hg serve command directly on the server yields an apparently responsive Mercurial server, but the clients do not seem to make any further requests. Running "hg serve" in the repository directory and cloning over http works perfectly. What should I be looking for to help debug this? Is there something the clients (hg and TortoiseHG) aren't sending to continue the request stream? Additional Information: If I change to an invalid repository on the target machine, the appropriate error is displayed, so it does appear that the remote hg is running and correctly evaluating the path. • Log a user in to an ASP.net application using Windows Authentication without using Windows Authentic

  I have an ASP.net application I'm developing authentication for. I am using an existing cookie-based log on system to log users in to the system. The application runs as an anonymous account and then checks the cookie when the user wants to do something restricted. This is working fine. However, there is one caveat: I've been told that for each page that connects to our SQL server, I need to make it so that the user connects using an Active Directory account. because the system I'm using is cookie based, the user isn't logged in to Active Directory. Therefore, I use impersonation to connect to the server as a specific account. However, the powers that be here don't like impersonation; they say that it clutters up the code. I agree, but I've found no way around this. It seems that the only way that a user can be logged in to an ASP.net application is by either connecting with Internet Explorer from a machine where the user is logged in with their Active Directory account or by typing an Active Directory username and password. Neither of these two are workable in my application. I think it would be nice if I could make it so that when a user logs in and receives the cookie (which actually comes from a separate log on application, by the way), there could be some code run which tells the application to perform all network operations as the user's Active Directory account, just as if they had typed an Active Directory username and password. It seems like this ought to be possible somehow, but the solution evades me. How can I make this work? Update To those who have responded so far, I apologize for the confusion I have caused. The responses I've received indicate that you've misunderstood the question, so please allow me to clarify. I have no control over the requirement that users must perform network operations (such as SQL queries) using Active Directory accounts. I've been told several times (online and in meat-space) that this is an unusual requirement and possibly bad practice. I also have no control over the requirement that users must log in using the existing cookie-based log on application. I understand that in an ideal MS ecosystem, I would simply dis-allow anonymous access in my IIS settings and users would log in using Windows Authentication. This is not the case. The current system is that as far as IIS is concerned, the user logs in anonymously (even though they supply credentials which result in the issuance of a cookie) and we must programmatically check the cookie to see if the user has access to any restricted resources. In times past, we have simply used a single SQL account to perform all queries. My direct supervisor (who has many years of experience with this sort of thing) wants to change this. He says that if each user has his own AD account to perform SQL queries, it gives us more of a trail to follow if someone tries to do something wrong. The closest thing I've managed to come up with is using WIF to give the user a claim to a specific Active Directory account, but I still have to use impersonation because even still, the ASP.net process presents anonymous credentials to the SQL server. It boils down to this: Can I log users in with Active Directory accounts in my ASP.net application without having the users manually enter their AD credentials? (Windows Authentication)

• Timer in a Windows service - not really working?

  I have a Windows NT Service in C# which basically wakes up every x seconds, checks to see if any mail notifications need to be sent out, and then goes back to sleep. • PHP problems when transfering code from Windows to OS X

  I have recently bought a new MacBook Pro. Before I had my MacBook Pro I was working on a website on my desktop computer. And now I want to transfer this code to my new MacBook Pro. The problem is that when I transfered the code (I put it on Dropbox and simply downloaded it on my MacBook Pro) I started to see lots of error messages in my PHP code. The error message I”m receiving is: Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /some/file.php:1) in /some/file.php on line 23 I have done some research on this and it seems that this error is most frequently caused by a new line, simple whitespace or any output before the <?php sign. I have looked through all the places where I have cookies that are being sent in the HTTP request and also where I'm using the header() function. I haven’t detected any output or whitespace that possibly could interfere and cause this problem. Noteworthy is that the error always says that the output is started at line 1. Which got me thinking if there is some kind of coding differences in the way that the Mac OS X and Windows operating systems handle new lines or white spaces? Or could the Dropbox transfer messed something up? Last year they were affected by a virus that destroyed the registry and all their RAC environments were "OUT OF ORDER", the result, thousand people on vacation for a day.They were distrustful about Linux and after came an agreement to migrate their Enterprise Manager from Windows to Linux (OMS and Repository). • Windows Embedded CE DiskPrep PowerToy

  Kurt Kennett from Microsoft has offered up a handy new tool. This tool is useful for creating a boot disk for x86 Windows CE systems that use the BIOSLoader. This is especially useful for creating disks with formats other than FAT16, which are fairly easy to create. I am letting you know about this new tool, but I have to be honest in telling you that I haven’t used it myself because it is for Windows Vista and Windows 7 – which I don’t have available right now. But you can bet that I will be setting up a virtual machine to give it a try. Here is what Kurt has to say about the tool: Download the DiskPrep Tool  DiskPrep can prepare any hard disk that can be attached to your development PC so that it can boot your X86-based Windows CE OS Design. USB disks (including disk "keys"), Compact Flash Cards, and SD cards all work if your system bios can boot from that type of media. FAT16, FAT32, and exFAT all supported. DOS is not used - the program prepares the bios loader on the disk and only uses that. If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can use VHD files for VirtualPC. • Can&rsquo;t eject external USB or Firewire drive in Windows 7

  As a SharePoint developer, I work a lot with Virtual Machines (presently using Windows Virtual PC, with Windows 7).  I’m using these VMs with my laptop, and in order to get better performance, I’ve moved them to external hard drives.  (These drives have faster RPMs, larger caches, and a larger capacity, than the internal drive.)  I have one large external drive at home, another similar drive at the office, and a small, slow portable drive that I carry with me. So, at the end of each day at the office, I copy the files from the external drive to my portable drive and then once I get home, I copy them from the portable to the larger external drive I leave at home.  I do this for a couple of reasons: so I can work at home and secondly, so I have backup copies.  (Often, I feel like I’m in the movie “Office Space” when copying the files before I leave the office). Anyway, after the files are copied, I safely eject the external drives, and then hibernate my laptop.  I’ve been doing this for over a year now, but within the last couple of months I started to have issues disconnecting the drives.  Intermittently, some application/process would have a lock on some file on the drive that would keep Windows from safely ejecting it. After looking into it, I found that it was actually the Windows search service that was accessing the drive! Since I wasn’t using Windows search to look for stuff on these drives, I removed them as locations to index. To do this in Windows 7, you need to go to Indexing Options (just type “Indexing” into the search box in the Start menu…).  One of the choices displayed will then be Indexing Options, so click on it and you should then see a window similar to this:   Click on the Modify button and you’ll see this window: Notice the different drives listed above.  My “FreeAgent XTreme (F:)” drive was checked for some reason, which was causing the indexing service to scan the drive looking for new files to make available in the search results.  Ever since I unchecked this box, I’ve been able to safely eject the drive.

  Windows 8 includes a built-in antivirus solution that runs in the background. You might, however, be surprised that there is no obvious way to scan an item on demand. Here’s how to launch the Windows Defender GUI as well as add a scan option to the context menu. Manually Opening Windows Defender The first way to scan your files is to use the Windows Defender GUI, to do so navigate to: C:\Program Files\Windows Defender Then launch: MSASCui.exe When the GUI opens, choose to do a custom scan, then click the Scan now button. Now choose the folder you want to scan, and then click OK. That’s all there it to it. Scan Using the Context Menu If you don’t fancy opening the GUI, you could always add an option to the context menu. To do so, press the Windows + R keyboard combination to open a run box and type: shell:sendto Then press enter. Now go ahead and download this batch file we wrote, then unzip its contents into the SendTo folder. Now when you right click on a file or folder, you will be able to scan items using the “Send to” menu. Unfortunately it does use the command line scanner, nevertheless it gets the job done. • Hybrid Graphics on Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04 Dual Boot

  Alright, so here's the situation: I am using an ASUS UL80VT with two graphics cards: Integrated intel graphics and NVIDIA G210M I was running an Ubuntu 12.04 - Windows 7 dual boot (on separate partitions).The machine worked perfectly (including the display drivers) without me needing to install anything special or change any settings. However, my hard drive was corrupted and I lost all my data yesterday, so after it was replaced, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 64x again after installing Windows 7. I booted up Ubuntu after installation, and noticed it was by default using Unity 2D... Gnome 3.4 wasn't working properly either, so I guessed that the NVIDIA G210M driver wasn't installed/working and the OS was instead using the integrated graphics. I checked the "Additional Drivers" thing, but there were no proprietary drivers listed there, so I went to the NVIDIA website, downloaded the driver directly and installed it. I restarted, but there was no change. After this, I read somewhere that I should change my SATA in the BIOS to "Compatible" rather than "Enhanced". This worked fine and fixed the problem (both Unity and Gnome were working perfectly) but then when I tried booting up Windows 7, I recieved the BSOD. So I changed it back to Enhanced, and once again, the NVIDIA 210M graphics isn't working on Ubuntu, but on Windows 7 it is. I do not want to keep changing from Enhanced to Compatible every time I reboot to Ubuntu and neither do I want to simply just use one OS. Note that NVIDIA 210M and integrated graphics work perfectly on Windows 7. Also, I don't care about switching between them, I just want to be able to use the NVIDIA one. What can I do so that both Windows 7 and Ubuntu work and NVIDIA G210M works on Ubuntu?

• Windows Embedded Compact 7

  This will be the official name of the new release of Windows CE. Windows Embedded Compact 7 is available as a public CTP and it already supports a wide range of CPUs and both the device emulator and VirtualPC emulated environments. So I’ll have to learn a new (and longer) name for my favorite OS… but I (and all my two readers!) will be able to test it as soon as the download from connect web site completes (I'm sorry for my readers, but you'll have to download it by yourselves). Here’s a link for the download (it's free but you’ll have to register on connect with a valid LiveId): https://connect.microsoft.com/windowsembeddedce Remember that this is still a beta (or “Community Technology Preview” if you speak marketing language) and so it’s better to not install it on your main development PC (or, at least, backup everything before installation) and that the features and performances you’ll get from this beta may not be the same ones of the final release of the OS. • Demantra Implementation Tip Windows and Unix or Linux

  Hello!  Are you implementing using a third party or consulting resources?   Recently we have seen some cases where customers no longer have a windows installation.  After the initial install and configuration, once the instance has gone live, the windows install is either deleted or most likely no longer with the customer as the same was installed on the implementers' laptop to start with. As a result when support comes back requesting the customer to apply a patch and/or upgrade they do not have a windows installation.  This has started happening after Oracle Demantra gave them the option to configure the engine on Unix.  Workaround: It is advisable that the customer keep their Windows installation intact for further patching and/or upgrade.  It is aslo possible that the implementer had installed Demantra on his Windows box and you do not have access to it any more.  It is possible that with the web and engine on Unix, and the silent installer having downloaded all the executable for Business Modeler, to work on the User's client machine, you may no longer need the windows install. I have not tested the above
