• Microsoft Word files have weird icons suddenly?

  All of a sudden, my Microsoft Office files have the generic file icon, and it happens with Powerpoint and Word, but not Excel. I can open the files just fine, and I tried restarting my computer, creating new files, clicking F5 on the desktop, turning off my Windows XP theme patcher, and none of them worked, any ideas? EDIT: I've also noticed that it happened to the following programs: Windows Live Messenger, iTunes, and Skype, so not just MS Office. Yet, some are still fine like IE, Paint, GIMP, Paint.NET, a few web browsers, etc.

  Is it possible to migrate the Windows XP Pro 32 bit operating system, applications etc from a USB external drive which is the recovered hard drive from that failed system to my new desktop computer with Windows7 64 bit system? Does anyone know if ' Windows Server 2003 IAS RADIUS' will query a 'Windows Server 2012 AD DS' and be able to return the attributes correctly? I have come across a Windows XP machine that is sending unwanted p2p traffic. I have done a 'netstat -b' command and explorer.exe is sending out the traffic. When I kill this process the traffic stops and obviously Windows Explorer dies. Here is the header of the stream from the Wireshark dump (x.x.x.x) is the machines IP. I have looked in Windows firewall and it shouldn't be letting this traffic through. I have had a look into the messages explorer.exe is sending in Spy++ and the only related ones I can see are socket connections etc... My question is what can I do to look into this deeper? What does malware achieve by sending p2p traffic? I know to fix the problem the easiest way is to reinstall Windows but I want to get to the bottom of it first, just out of interest. Edit: Had a look at Deoendency Walker and Process Explorer. Both great tools. • How to access shared files in two different domains

  There are two internal domains, domainA and domainB at my workplace. I could remote into machines from either domains by using respective credentials. My doubt is if I create a shared folder on domainA with read access to everyone for e.g., \\server1.domainA.net\sharedfolder. Will I be able to access this folder by just entering the path likewise from any machine in domainB without entering credentials.

  I have a Solaris 10 server on another network. I can ping it and telnet to it, but ssh doesn't connect. PuTTY log contains nothing of interest (they both negotiate to ssh v2) and then I get "Event Log: Network error: Software caused connection abort". ssh is defintely running: svcs -a | grep ssh online 12:12:04 svc:/network/ssh:default Here's an extract from the server's /var/adm/messages (anonymised) Jun 8 19:51:05 ******* sshd[26391]: [ID 800047 auth.crit] fatal: Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer However, if I telnet to the box, I can login to ssh locally.   How do I pass commands (shell) to a persistent SSH tunnel rather than open a connection for every instance? I have a Python scraper running on a client server which passes URL variables and shell commands to a remote host via a reverse tunnel (forwarded port), so that the URL's are then executed on the host (python fabric ssh localhost:12345 'browser open URL'). I could make the reverse tunnel persistent but how do I echo the url/command to the session? Update - ControlMaster (built into SSH) solves this one.

• Problem with monitoring Glassfish with JConsole..

  I have enabled JMX connection on remote Glassfish server and then I've restarted it. During starting server notified: Standard JMX Clients (like JConsole) can connect to JMXServiceURL: [service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://myserver:8686/jmxrmi] for domain management purposes. Port 8686 is opened for connections. But I can't connect to server with JConsole.. It says: Connection failed. How can I solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

Edit: On Win8 Aero was removed but the taskbar is transparent (the desktop background picture is slightly visible 'behind' the taskbar). • Cisco ASA: Allowing and Denying VPN Access based on membership to an AD group

  I have a Cisco ASA 5505 connecting to an Active Directory server for VPN authentication. Usually we'd restrict this to a particular OU, but in this case users which need access are spread across multiple OUs. So, I'd like to use a group to specify which users have remote access. I've created the group and added the users, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to deny users which aren't in that group. Right now, if someone connects they get assigned the correct group policy "companynamera" if they are in that group, so the LDAP mapping is working. However, users who are not in that group still authenticate fine, and their group policy becomes the LDAP path of their first group, i.e. CN=Domain Users,CN=Users,DC=example,DC=com, and then are still allowed access. How do I add a filter so that I can map everything that isn't "companynamera" to no access?   When you press the v keyboard shortcut in Google Reader, it opens a new tab. Regardless of the setting "When a new tab or window is opened, make it active" setting (Under Preferences Tabs), it becomes the frontmost tab when opened. Is there a way to have all tabs open in the background, like when you Cmd+click? (I'm aware of other alternative solutions, such as Firefox which handles this correctly, or a desktop RSS such as NetNewsWire/Vienna which have an "open links in background" option, but I like Google Reader's interface and wish to continue using it)

• How to move a ruby on rails application to a new server

  I have a rails app on an old Ubuntu server I need to move onto a new machine. I haven't worked with ruby on rails so I don't really know anything about the structure of the app. I want to load this onto an Ubuntu 8.04 AMI on Amazon EC2 and am looking for any information regarding the migration process such as: Do I copy over the entire folder defined as the application root in the mongrel config (for ex: /u/apps/myapp/current) or just certain folders? Am I looking for trouble if I go with the latest versions of ruby and the various gems? Any general gotchas to look out for in the process.
