• Error message when renaming files on a network drive stored in Windows 7 favorites

  I have a network drive mapped to a share on a Window Server 2003. I have a shortcut to this drive stored in my Windows 7 favorites. When I double click the shortcut and then rename a file on the drive, if the file is longer than 8 chars or contains spaces then I get this error The drive that this file or folder is stored on does not allow long file names, or names containing blanks or any of the following characters:... If I get to the network drive by click on it in the tree under computer then it works fine. Is there a way to get round this?

• Unable to connect guest using VMWare Player

  I'm running RedHat server 5.3 as guest on Window XP VMware palyer. the network setting is set to "Host Only", but I have tries all other settings. I'm able to ping the guest machine, but I'm unable to connect it in any other way including webserver, Tomcat, Telnet, ssh. all of the services above are working from within the guest (using localhost). Guest firewall and SELinux are disabled. any idea on what I should check next? every idea will be appreciated... thnaks Ilan

• Ubuntu 12.04 blank screen after login

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit on a machine, everything went well accordingly but after login it just gives me a blank screen. During startup after BIOS message it shows "Out of range" error and comes to login window after logon it's just a blank screen. even after somehow it comes to an empty desktop screen i dont see the Unity bar or anything like that (Can change wallpaper, and system setting though). And can't goto Console mode by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 - it returns "Out of range" error. System is new AMD Sempron with 2 Gigs of RAM has NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE-based graphic chipset. any ideas on this?

  Today’s guest blog is from Oracle SVP Product Development Reggie Bradford, fresh off a visit to Sao Paulo, Brazil where he spoke at the Dachis Social Business Summit and spent some time getting a personal taste for the astonishing growth of social in Brazil, both in terms of usage and engagement. I knew it was big, but I now have an all-new appreciation for why the Wall Street Journal branded Brazil the “social media capital of the universe.” Brazil has the world’s 5th largest economy, an expanding middle class, an active younger demo market, a connected & outgoing culture, and an ongoing embrace of the social media platforms. • Scrolling mouse sets windows sound volume

  Suddenly, when I use the scroll wheel of my mouse, it changes the windows sound volume level. I have a HP DV6-2030SD laptop with Windows 7 64 bit and a Zolid p50622 mouse. When I use the scroll function of the mouse pad of the laptop, it does not adjust the sound level. I don't have any special mouse drivers installed, just the standard windows drivers. When I scroll, I see the HP sound level screen: It doesn't do it always, but when it does, it prevents the current window to scroll, which is really annoying. Rebooting doesn't help. I've tried to put the USB dongle in a different port, but this doesn't help either. Any advise on how I can fix this?

• Windows 7 unresponsive after hibernate.

  The last few days, when I get Windows out of hibernate, Windows itself gets unresponsive. I can use any of my programs that were already opened before hibernating, but the window functions (closing, changing the size etc) aren't reacting. I can't open any new programs, except for the Task Manager. Also, I don't get an Internet connection. When I use Ctrl + Alt + Del, I get either a black screen, or the regular background. Then it hangs and after a while shows me a message that Windows failed starting up that "thing"(don't know what it's called in English, something with safety, etc). I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed.

• How can I get ssh-agent working over ssh and in tmux (on OS X)?

  I have a private key set up for my github account, the passphrase to which is, I believe, stored in OS X's keychain. I certainly don't have to type it in when I open a terminal window and enter ssh [email protected]. However, when I'm running bash over an ssh session, or locally inside a tmux session, I have to type in the passphrase every single time I attempt to ssh to github. This question suggests that a similar problem exists with screen, but I don't really understand the issue well enough to fix it in tmux. There's also this page which includes a fairly complicated solution, but for zsh. • windows 2000 freezing during large disk write

  We have a windows 2000 sp4 server which freezes up for about 1 minutes while its web-app does a ~500mb write operation. I can see the webapp start to do I/O activity (through process explorer) then the RDP session becomes unresponsive, you can click on windows and buttons but nothing happens. When the disk write finally finishes the session 'catches up' on all the mouse clicks you did during the freeze in a mad flurry of window activity and the server returns to normal. During the freeze the web-app stops as well. The same behaviour happens on the console of the server. (so I know its not a network thing) Nothing appears in the Event logs. Its like nothing happened. I have upgraded all the HP hardware drivers to the latest proliant support pack. And also run a HP hardware diagnostics which found nothing wrong. What would cause a disk write to lock the rest of the OS?

  I have created customized live cd of lubuntu and it is customized using uck. After burning the CDROM and using the cdrom for installation of same CD the installation works fine on HP desktop but it fails on Dell desktop. Here is the error. • wget has a 4 second delay

  Hello. I have tried to wget a page with windows/mac, and the response is instant while the linux vesion needs to wait for 4 seconds before it shows the response. I just hope this can be solved. • Profiling Silverlight Applications after installing Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1

  Introduction Now that the dust has settled and everyone has downloaded and installed Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, its time to talk about a new feature included that will help Silverlight Developers profile their applications. Let’s take a look at what the official documentation says about it: Performance Wizard for Silverlight – taken from VS2010 SP1 KB. Visual Studio 2010 SP1 enables you to tune the Silverlight application performance by profiling the code. A traditional code profiler cannot tune the rendering performance for Silverlight applications. Many higher-level profilers are added to Visual Studio 2010 SP1 so that you can better determine which parts of the application consume time. So, how do you do it? After you finish installing VS2010 SP1, make sure it took by going to Help –> About. You should see SP1Rel under Visual Studio 2010 as shown below. Now, that we have verified you are on the most current release, let’s load up a Silverlight Application. I’m going to take my hobby Silverlight project that I created a month or so ago. The reason that I’m picking this project is that I didn’t focus so much on performance as it was just built for fun and to see what I could do with Silverlight. I believe this makes the perfect application to profile.  After the project is loaded, click on Analyze then Launch Performance Wizard. Go ahead and click on CPU Sampling (recommended). You will notice that it ask which application to target. By Default, it will select the .Web project in an Silverlight Application. Go ahead and leave the default Web Project checked. We are going to leave the client as Internet Explorer. Now, go ahead and click finish. Now your Silverlight Application will launch. While your application is running, you will see the following inside of Visual Studio 2010. Here is where you will need to attach your Silverlight Application to the web application that is current being profiled. Simply click on the  Attach/Detach button below and find your application to attach to the profiler. In my case, I am using IE8 and could find it by the title. After you close your browser, you will notice it generated a report: These files will end with a .VSP If you click on the .VSP you will it generated the following report: We could turn off “Just My Code” but it may pick up things that we didn’t want to profile as shown below: One other feature to note is that you may want to export the data to a CSV or XML. You can do that by looking at the toolbar and clicking the button highlighted below. Conclusion The profiler for Silverlight is a great addition to an already great product. So before you ship a Silverlight Application run it through the profile and see what comes up. Since its included and free I can’t see a reason not to do this. • VMware Kernel Module Updater hangs on Ubuntu 13.04

  VMware Player has a nice auto-detection of kernel changes, and requests the user to compile the required modules in order to load them. This happens from time to time after a regular update of your system. Usually, the dialog of VMware Kernel Module Updater pops up, asks for root access authentication, and completes the compilation. VMware Player or Workstation checks if modules for the active kernel are available. In theory this is supposed to work flawlessly but in reality there are pitfalls occassionally. With the recent upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail and the latest kernel 3.8.0-21 the actual VMware Kernel Module Updater simply disappeared and the application wouldn't start as expected. When you launch VMware Player as super user (root) the dialog would stall like so: VMware Kernel Module Updater stalls while stopping the services Prior to version 5.x of VMware Player or version 7.x of VMware Workstation you would run a command like: $ sudo vmware-config.pl to resolve the module version conflict but this doesn't work anyway. Solution Instead, you have to execute the following line in a terminal or console window: $ sudo vmware-modconfig --console --install-all Those switches are (as of writing this article) not documented in the output of the --help switch. But VMware already documented this procedure in their knowledge base: VMware Workstation stops functioning after updating the kernel on a Linux host (1002411). Update As of today I had the first kernel upgrade to version 3.8.0-22 in Ubuntu 13.04. Don't even try it without vmware-modconfig...

• Why are applications slowing down on the computer's second monitor?

  Here's an interesting one. Problem I have a user on Windows XP who is running a web application inside IE8. She has two monitors plugged in via DVI cables. When she is working the the browser on her primary monitor, everything is fine, but when she drags the window over to the second monitor, the web applications functionality grinds to a halt. It's not just web apps either - many applications exhibit the problem. What I've tried Switching the two monitors in the OS. It's obviously not the monitor's fault. Confirmed that it's the app slowing down, and not the graphical rendering. The application in question actually locks up. The mouse is unaffected, and I can drag other windows on top of the problematic application. Any ideas?

• How can I keep gnu screen from becoming unresponsive after losing my SSH connection?

  I use a VPN tunnel to connect to my work network and then SSH to connect to my work PC running cygwin. Once logged in I can attach to a screen session and everything works great. Now, after a while, I walk away from my computer and sooner or later, the VPN tunnel times out. The SSH connection on each end eventually times out and then I eventually come back to my computer to do some work. Theoretically, this should be a simple matter of just restarting the VPN, reconnecting via SSH, and then running "screen -r -d". However apparently when the sshd daemon times out on the cygwin PC, it leaves the screen session in some kind of hung state. I can reproduce a similar hung state by clicking the close box on a cygwin bash shell window while it's running a screen session. Is there any way to get the screen session to recover once this has happened, so that I don't lose anything?

  sir, i have created a web application in eclipse,db2 database server is running on my pc.so i can access the web application through the address http://localhost:8080/LimsWeb i used team viewer software to establish a remote desktop connection. can my friend somehow connect to my pc so that when he types the above url in his browser he will be able to fetch the pages of the application. i was able to do this by connecting with remote desktop mode.but in that case my friend was able to use the application which i created running on my pc only and in the window provided by team viewer.i want that he can run the application on his own computer calling the given url from his own browser. please help

• Is there a way to have a working search bar in Explorer with Windows Search Service disabled?

  I had to disable Windows Search Service (turn it off in Windows Features) for the reason that it was constantly using the hard drive in an excessive way (maybe because I've got very large quantities of files on my PC), noticeably slowing down my computer, and the Windows.edb database file grew way too large, about 2.5 GB in size. But the side-effect of it is that now the search bar is gone from any Explorer window and I miss this useful feature. So my question is, is there a way to stop Windows Search Service torturing my hard drive and still being able to search for files and folders directly from Explorer, perhaps using some third-party software?

• Why did the web win the space of remote applications and X not?

  The X Window System is 25 years old, it had it's birthday yesterday (on the 15'th). As you probably are aware of, one of it's most important features is the separation of the server side and the client side in a way that neither Microsoft's, Apples or Wayland's windowing systems have. Back in the days (sorry for the ambiguous phrasing) many believed X would dominate over other ways to make windows because of this separation of server and client, allowing the application to be ran on a server somewhere else while the user clicks and types on her own computer at home. This use obviously still exists, but is marginalized at best. When we write and use programs that run on a server we almost always use the web with it's html/css/js. Why did the web win, and X not? The technologies used for the web (said html/css/js) are a mess. Combined with all the back-end-frameworks (Rails, Django and all) it really is a jungle to navigate thru. Still the web thrives with creativity and progress, while remote X apps do not.

• On Windows 7, how do I fix my cmd.exe icon and remove cruft from the jumplist

  Hi. When installing drivers for my Gigabyte motherboard, I installed a "Games" link which ran from a batch file. This was pinned to the taskbar by default. As a result, it changed the icon for cmd.exe to the icon for Games. I uninstalled the Games and it got rid of the icon leaving it with a white rectangle thing (I can post screenshots on request). There is also a link on the jumplist to open Games, which just opens a cmd window. I've tried rebuilding my icon cache as per Changing Windows 7 pinned taskbar icons, but this only removed the white rectangle icon, leaving me with no real icon. c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe still has the appropriate icon in explorer, just not on the taskbar. Any ideas on how to fix this annoyance?

  Hi I just started my computer up & opened a website for my checking my mail, when I opened a Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 window popped up. C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\rse47wp8.default\Cache\C\79\D5CC9d01 Does anyone is familiar with this? I checked the path and this path doesn't exist. I couldn't remember that I have a file of D5CC9d01 once. Can somebody please tell me if this is a virus or not? Thanks

• How come Win+R prompt can open Python when it's not in my path?

  When I use the run prompt in Windows XP Professional (Win+R), and type python.exe or python, it works and greets me with the python prompt. However, when I start a cmd window, and then type python.exe or python, it doesn't find it. This is what I expect, as the Python directory (for me, I:\Python31\) is not in my PATH. How come, then, that if I type python.exe in the Win+R prompt, it works? Edit: here is a partial output of SET, I removed most irrelevant entries, I'm not sure why is it useful, apart from the PATH variable which I already said doesn't include the Python directory. If you need a particular variable other than these, please ask. • Unable to install Android for Windows 7 because JDK is not found

  I have JDK SE7u4 installed in windows 7. I tried to install Android on Windows 7 using the installer_r18-windows.exe but no avail. The setup window showed the message saying that the Java SE JDK not found and ERROR: Failed to find Java version for C:\Windows\System32\java.exe The system cannot found the file specified. If you believe you have a JDK installed and it was not properly recognized, simply set an environment variable JAVA_HOME to point to it I right clicked on Computer Properties Advanced System Settings Environment variables. I created a NEW system variable called JAVA_HOME and set the value as C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_04\bin or C:\Windows\System32\java.exe. I ran the installer again — the same error message still appeared.

• Launcher icons are invisible after upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04

  I am re-purposing an old laptop. I installed 11.10 on it and then immediately upgraded to 12.04. (I could not directly install 12.04 as my system does not support PAE.) When my system was (briefly) 11.10, the desktop appeared as expected. However, after the upgrade to 12.04, the icons in the launcher area are invisible. If I hover over the spot where the icon should be the little popup window showing the tool's name appears, and I can click to invoke the tool. I just cannot see the icons. ![invisible icons in launcher][1] The icons do appear as expected in other contexts, for example in the Home folder and in Dash Home. My theme is "Ambiance (default)" I do not have a ~/.icons folder. This is the top level contents of /usr/share/icons: default DMZ-Black DMZ-White gnome handhelds hicolor HighContrast HighContrastInverse Humanity Humanity-Dark locolor LoginIcons LowContrast redglass ubuntu-mono-dark ubuntu-mono-light unity-icon-theme whiteglass (Sorry for the poor formatting, can't get it to show in list.) I suspect that the launcher isn't looking for the icons in the right place, but I don't know how to confirm that, or how to correct. This is my first foray into Linux, although I used to use Unix a few decades ago. This doesn't look much like my old Sun workstation, though! Does anyone have any suggestions or insights for me?
