• How to discriminate vertical from horizontal scroll on Kubuntu/KDE mouse action for switch Desktop

  Currently trying out KDE, and I'm a big user of multiple workspaces/desktops while I work. I've noticed that essentially, KDE isn't able (or doesn't bother?) to tell between my mouse's standard vertical scroll, and the left/right scroll that it has. Just FYI, my mouse has a pretty sensitive scroll wheel with no discernible "clicks" so I can easily make my desktop look like it's on crack. Here's what I'd like: vertical scroll does nothing when applied on desktop, but left/right scroll causes me to switch to previous/next desktop. Here's what happens now - per settings for Desktop Settings -- Mouse Actions: Whether I scroll up/down or if I click left/right, I switch desktops. Thanks for your help

• Lubuntu 13.10 selected LX games desktop now can't login

  I logged out of my normal desktop and selected LX games from the dropdown list and logged back in. This led me to a black screen and now I can't see the login screen in order to change back to my normal desktop. On startup the machine boots normally, the lubuntu splash screen shows up, then it goes to a black screen with nothing on it - not even a mouse cursor. I can bring up a terminal using ctrl+alt+F2. Is there a way via terminal to change my desktop environment back to its previous state? Or alternatively, is there a file I can edit where my preferred desktop is stored? (The machine is dual-booted so I can access the Lubuntu files from LXLE which is installed on a second partition). The machine in question is a Toshiba A200 laptop.

• Keyboard shorcut for a custom folder in Desktop

  I would like to configure a keyboard shortcut for a particular folder in my Desktop. I will be using this folder quite often and is there a way to open them with a custom keyboard shortcut ? The remote thing I came across regarding this is this question which is for opening home folder similar to Windows, but I do not want to go to home folder and navigate from there all the way to a folder in the Desktop (mouse clicking the desktop folder is way too easier than this method). So my Question: Can I have custom keyboard shortcuts for custom folders like folders in Desktop ? I'm using 12.04.

• How do I remote desktop to my work's Windows box from my Mac at home through VPN?

  I would like to remote desktop from my Macbook to my Work's laptop from home. I connect to the work's network via Cisco VPN. My Cisco VPN clients connects fine in Mac OS X but I am unable to remote desktop. I am also unable to ping my work laptop. The laptop is powered on and not sleeping. I can access it via LogMeIn. If I were to actually pug into our network at the building. I can remote desktop to my work laptop from my Macbook. If I use a Windows virtual machine and connect using the Windows Cisco VPN client, I am able to RDP and ping my work laptop. What is wrong with my OS X VPN connection?

In any other folders, when I typed in something like ./a.out, there appears a Permission Denied error.   I am having the following problem with a RAID1 software raid partition on my Ubuntu system (10.04 LTS, 2.6.32-24-server in case it matters). One of my disks (sdb5) reported I/O errors and was therefore marked faulty in the array. The array was then degraded with one active device. Hence, I replaced the harddisk, cloned the partition table and added all new partitions to my raid arrays. After syncing all partitions ended up fine, having 2 active devices - except one of them. The partition which reported the faulty disk before, however, did not include the new partition as an active device but as a spare disk: md3 : active raid1 sdb5[2] sda5[1] 4881344 blocks [2/1] [_U] A detailed look reveals: root@server:~# mdadm --detail /dev/md3 [...] Number Major Minor RaidDevice State 2 8 21 0 spare rebuilding /dev/sdb5 1 8 5 1 active sync /dev/sda5 So here is the question: How do I tell my raid to turn the spare disk into an active one? And why has it been added as a spare device? Recreating or reassembling the array is not an option, because it is my root partition. And I can not find any hints to that subject in the Software Raid HOWTO. Any help would be appreciated. Current Solution I found a solution to my problem, but I am not sure that this is the actual way to do it. Having a closer look at my raid I found that sdb5 was always listed as a spare device: mdadm --examine /dev/sdb5 [...] Number Major Minor RaidDevice State this 2 8 21 2 spare /dev/sdb5 0 0 0 0 0 removed 1 1 8 5 1 active sync /dev/sda5 2 2 8 21 2 spare /dev/sdb5 so readding the device sdb5 to the array md3 always ended up in adding the device as a spare. Finally I just recreated the array mdadm --create /dev/md3 --level=1 -n2 -x0 /dev/sda5 /dev/sdb5 which worked. But the question remains open for me: Is there a better way to manipulate the summaries in the superblock and to tell the array to turn sdb5 from a spare disk to an active disk? I am still curious for an answer.

• Virus that tries to brute force attack Active Directory users (in alphabetical order)?

  Users started complaining about slow network speed so I fired up Wireshark. Did some checking and found many PCs sending packets similar to the following: (screenshot) http://imgur.com/45VlI.png I blurred out the text for the username, computer name and domain name (since it matches the internet domain name). Computers are spamming the Active Directory servers trying to brute force hack passwords. It will start with Administrator and go down the list of users in alphabetical order. Physically going to the PC finds no one anywhere near it and this behavior is spread across the network so it appears to be a virus of some sort. Scanning computers which have been caught spamming the server with Malwarebytes, Super Antispyware and BitDefender (this is the antivirus the client has) yields no results. This is an enterprise network with about 2500 PCs so doing a rebuild is not a favorable option. My next step is to contact BitDefender to see what help they can provide. Has anybody seen anything like this or have any ideas what it could possibly be?

  I have a new OU (natorg.local\NATO\Users) that I am trying to apply GP to. I have created a new user in this OU, and linked the 3 GPO's to this OU: DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (AppData) DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (Desktop) DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (Documents) Hopefully the names are sufficient to suggest what they do exactly. The settings are under User Settings so there is no Loopback processing required (if my understanding is correct). Can anyone suggest why these GP Objects would be "invisible" to the client?

• Enabled storing Bitlocker keys in Active Directory, is there a way to upload keys of drives encrypted before this?

  We have enabled storing of Bitlocker keys within the device object on Active Directory, however before this was implemented, we had encrypted 100+ devices using bitlocker and we've only found ways to upload the key to AD when enabling bitlocker for the first time on an install. Does anybody know of a way where we can upload all the keys for all the devices which already had their drives encrypted with Bitlocker into their respective device objects in AD? Or are we going to have to decrypt and re-encrypt all the devices on the floor? (Google seems to say this is what we're going to have to do, however we're no experts in Bitlocker, so may have missed something) When we go into Manage Bitlocker of an already encrypted device, we only get the same options of saving the key to a file, a memory stick or printing it out, no option is available to save to AD etc. Any help would be appreciated.

• Server 2008 Active Directory DNS Entries Deleted. Dcdiag unable to contact local AD controller.

  I've never seen anything like this. At a potential customer site, I noticed that the PC's were all unable to locate the domain controller and netlogon was failing. I fixed the DNS entries on the client PC's so the AD server was DNS server and tried to rejoin the domain. The PC was unable to locate the domain controller. On the server, I checked the DNS settings and while there is the high level AD folder, every single entry related to Active Directory appears to have been completely deleted. There are no backups from what I can tell and this has been happening for 6 months at least. Does anyone have any recommendations for repairing this? Thanks.

• How do we keep Active Directory resilient across multiple sites?

  I handle much of the IT for a company of around 100 people, spread across about five sites worldwide. We're using Active Directory for authentication, mostly served to Linux (CentOS 5) systems via LDAP. We've been suffering through a spate of events where the IP tunnel between the two major sites goes down and the secondary domain controller at one site can't contact the primary domain controller at the other. It seems that the secondary domain controller starts denying user authentication within minutes of losing connectivity to the primary. How do we make the secondary domain controller more resilient to downtime? Is there a way for it to cache the entire directory and/or at least keep enough information locally to survive a multi-hour disconnection? (We're all in a single organizational unit if that makes any difference.) (The servers here are Windows Server 2003; don't assume that we set this up correctly. I'm a software engineer, not an IT specialist.)

  I'm a software developer currently stuck to support CyberArk at a large company. I need to pull up a list of accounts that is belong to a certain user. For example, let's said I have a user account named Bob and I want to find all the accounts that belong to Bob in AD meaning on the Organization tab of a user properties, the Manager should be Bob. I've absolutely zero knowledge regarding AD except the very basic. Is there a way to do it? I only have access to "Active Directory Users and Computers" tool and I'm not even sure if I have enough privilege to run script or install powershell to do it but would like to know the script or powershell command to do so if there is one.

• Are less domains better than more domains in active directory?

  A colleague of mine wants to add a domain to our forest. He said it would be good for security. I believe him but I have no idea why it is any better than with just one domain. I read this on Wikipedia but it has no source: "Microsoft recommends as few domains as possible in Active Directory and a reliance on OUs to produce structure and improve the implementation of policies and administration." I have no idea if it's right or not. I was hoping for comments. Thank you.

• Have you successfully installed Active Directory Management Gateway Service on 2008?

  I've got a pair of 2008 DCs onto which I've been trying to install the Active Directory Management Gateway Service. (I only wanted it on one but when that didn't work I tried another.) Both are failing with: "The update does not apply to your system". They're both Windows Server 2008 Domain Controllers, x64 version. Both have .NET 3.5 SP1 installed on them. One has Service Pack 2 installed and the other has the hotfix from 967574 installed. Both servers were rebooted after the installed of each of the required updates. I have attempted to install Windows6.0-KB968934-x64.msu on both and get the error reported above. According to the docs, my machines meet the requirements, so something must be missing from the requirements. Or there's something odd about these DCs. Has anyone succeeded? If so, did you have to install/remove anything (else) to get it installed?

• Can Windows Home Server be used on an active directory domain?

  The situation: an Active Directory network with a few dozen machines. Most of the machines have the same vanilla image applied to them so if there was a hard drive failure getting the machine back up to the standard network image would be quick and easy. However, there are a handful of (eight) machines which have rather unique setups (accounting, developers, the "artist" with CS4 and such). For these machines we would like to use Windows Home Server since the backups are automatic and recovery from a machine failure is quite painless. The question though is whether or not WHS can be used on an A/D network. If not, what "set it and forget it" backup/imaging product is recommended for this scenario?

  Is there an easy way to override the Samba "template shell = /bin/bash" setting on a per-user basis? This is for Linux systems joined to an Active Directory domain. Some users want /bin/bash. Others including myself want /bin/zsh. Is there some AD attribute I can set? Anything I've found via googling seems hackish at best (writing a script to replace /bin/sh -- maintenance hassle). I had to change our unnamed crappy ADSL router to a crappy Comtrend CT-5361 WiFi router, now every WiFi connection to the domain doesn't work correctly: Joining the domain is impossible (see related question) Logging into the domain takes ages Authentication usually fails Question: How to debug this and pinpoint the exact problem? I have no enough knowledge on either WiFi networks or on Active Directory to know which connections are made at which stages nor how to check what's happening at the wireless level to compare what should happen to what is happening. I'm looking for resources to learn what should be happening and tools to detect what is actually happening (I expect a sniffer should be enough, but if there are better, more specialized tools, that'd be great).

• Desktop Notifications, aka Internal Alert System

  It has become apparent that where I work needs, internally, a "notification system". The issue being that we are very spread out throughout multiple buildings and the bulk of the work force regularly keeps there email closed for hours at a time. I need to create a simple way to be able to push out a message and have it "pop up" on everyones computer(or a single computer). My first thought was to write a windows service that calls a winform/wpf app that resides on each computer that simply pops up with the message. Not sure how viable an idea that is but this is just brain-storming. A different route, I thought, could be an app that resides in the systray on each computer that polls a db table and using the Query Notifications could pop up a message each time a new row is added. Then simply create an insanely basic app for writing a row to that table. So, what I am asking is if any one else has walked this path. If so, how? What things did you take into consideration? Are either of my ideas valid starting points or are "egg and my face in perfect alignment"? Is there a different way that is even simpler? Thanks
