  • iPhone app development pricing [closed]

    I currently manage a website design and development company that integrates itself with print work too. I've been co manager for a couple of months now, however business is slow at the moment. I got an email today from a potential client asking if we do iPhone app development. Obviously we do not. But, seeing as there aren't many other project on the go at the moment, why not give it a go? Searching Google was my first option. I did a bit of background scrubbing. Discovered that I need certain developer tools etc. This can be arranged easily enough. The reason I came to Stack Exchange is for answers to these questions. I am a competant programmer and have had experience in Java, PHP, JavaScript, C++ and C#. So how long would it take me to come to grips with Objective-C? Assuming an 8 hour working day. Not only the language but also the iPhone interface libraries (if any exist) and other native libraries? The potential client said the app will be a catalogue. So I'm assuming either the data will be pulled online or in some kind of local database. I know the requirements are vague but does anyone have any idea of how mug time this would take? To learn the language, design the architecture and code? 40 Hours? 80 Hours? My final question kind of depends on the first two. But obviously the potential client wants a quote. And I have got no idea how much an app costs. I did some research and found a huge range in differences. The majority of the cost would cone from the time to develops the app! So to summarise. How long would it take me to be comfortable coding Objective-C, taking into consideration my past knowledge? I'm assuming a day or two to fully understand but you really don't know. How long would it take me to develop an app? How much should I charge (approx) for the development of this app?

  • installer can't find partition, but fdisk can find them

    I'm installing ubuntu 12.04, my system had install 2 system -- winxp and ubuntu 10.10. Now, I want to update ubuntu to 12.04. I use usb disk to install 12.04. But, the installer can't not find my partition in my harddisk. But, the fdisk can find them. Can you help me?   • Just wondering about "Do-It Yourself Apps" on the internet versus apps written by us developers

    Hi, I have been doing Objective-C programming over the past few weeks, and I have learnt a lot. However, I see that there are other Web-companies offering services to consumers directly from their website that allow consumers to create their apps through a point and click and drag features without any code. Clearly they are more cost effective and fast than having a developer write an app. I was wondering if there are any advantages then of having a developer build an app for someone, other than the obvious advantage that its got a custom look and feel. Could someone please clarify, since Im new and would like to evaluate whether it is worthwhile spending time towards learning a whole new development environment when someone could just use a webservice to make an app for multiple platforms Thanks

I am able to find users who logged three sessions in a particular week, but I'd like to find users who log three sessions every week since a given start period.   • Get income on a free app, offline?

    I have an Android app which I added adMob ads to. They only work tough when the user is online. Now the problem is, the app is specially made for offline use, so pretty much nobody will ever get to see one. The app is free to download, but I would still like to make a few cents out of it. It currently has around 300, which I guess will look at it about twice per workday. Any help on how to make some money with this free, offline app?

  • My Favorite Free Windows Phone Twitter App

    Windows Phone 7 has been out for about two years now.  In that time I have switched back and forth with different free Twitter apps.  Mostly the has been because someone has mentioned one or another that they like.  I figured I would give a quick run down of what I felt were the pros and cons of each.  These are only the ones that I have used and your mileage may vary.  So here we go. WP7 Built-In Twitter Functionality While it is great that Microsoft put this functionality in, it is extremely limited in usefulness.  Some apps leverage it to allow you to share pictures or information they contain.  In all though, I don’t use it unless it is the quickest way to get something out. Official Twitter App The official Twitter app isn’t a very big step up from the phone functionality.  It gives you a better timeline view and better attachment handling, but it makes you bounce to a browser page to see images that are linked to a tweet. TweetCaster This was my main Twitter app for quite a while.  It is the only one with InstaPaper integration so that you can save you a tweet and review it later.  My main problem is that it crashes too much when it can’t find a connection.  It also only previews yfrog and twitpic images and only once you go to the detail of a tweet.  Other than that it is a solid Twitter client. moTweets This is my current favorite. It has nice image display in your timeline which I have not seen on any of the other apps.  There are two modes that you can use with this app.  The first is standard to most Twitter apps that allows you to navigate to a tweet and do the usual operations.  The second is what they call Quick Buttons.  In this case you do not see the content of the tweet but go straight to the let’s get something done stage.  It is an interesting take.  I do miss the Instapaper integration and it has a tendency to show a blank timeline list once in a while after you view detail entry.  If you scroll the list it restore your timeline, but you lose you place and are put to the first entry. Seesmic I am not very fond of this app.  The first thing is that it makes you pick a “Space” when you enter the app.  This is really “which account do you want to see”.  On top of that it does not show who retweeted an entry in your timeline and then only tells you how many people RT the post when you look at the detail.  There is a Speak feature that will read you a single tweet, but you have to navigate to the tweet and then to a menu to make it work.  We will have to see if this gets better with the features in Windows Phone 8.  Other than that it is another basic feature app.  Summary In the end I am sticking with moTweets.  I would appreciate it if they added the Instapaper capability and fixed the one bug.  If they did that I would be really happy with the product. del.icio.us Tags: Twitter,Windows Phone 7,WP7,TweetCaster,moTweets,Seesmic

  • Can't mount Linux usd disk. It just create /dev/sg device but no /dev/sd

    I have a Corsair R60 ssd disk which is a disk with both sata and usb connectors. But the usb thing seems to be a bit non-standard, or maybe its just my fedora linux. When I insert the disk using a usb cabel to a running Fedora 14 linux system, a device called /dev/sg3 is added but that is all. No new /dev/sd* device is created so I can't mount the disk. If I look at cat /proc/scsi/sg/device_strs I get ATA Hitachi HTS54321 FB2O HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N RP05 Seagate Desktop 0130 Corsair CSSD-R60GB2 So the disk is there. (The last entry) but my linux will for some reason not see it as a usb hard disk. When I insert other usb disks they work fine. It is only this specific disk which causes problems. I have tried on 3 different computers with the same result. A hint to the problem may be that if I add the disk to a windows system(With usb) the disk is called "A fixed disk" and not a portable disk as expected. The disk works fine with linux If i connect it with the sata cabel, but I would really like to have it working with usb too. (To mount it on computers without sata).

    I am trying to upgrade my kernel from 2.6.18-274 to 2.6.39 for some wireless card drivers. When I boot into the new kernel I get the "Can't find root filesystem / error mounting /dev/root" googling led me to this page http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_kernel_problems#Can.27t_find_root_filesystem_.2F_error_mounting_.2Fdev.2Froot From what I am reading seems to be an issue with a driver for my SATA controller or HD, but I can't find what option I need to add to the kernel. Doing a diff from the old initrd to the new one gives me the following: root-> diff /tmp/kafter /tmp/kbefore 6a7,8 > lib/dm-message.ko > lib/dm-region_hash.ko 8a11 > lib/dm-raid45.ko 13d15 < lib/dm-region-hash.ko 16a19 > lib/dm-mem-cache.ko Do I need any of those? not sure if I would need dm-raid45.ko as I am not running a raid. I have the same SATA and IDE options configured for both kernels so not sure what else to look for, any help is appreciated.   • Django + GAE (Google App Engine) : most convenient path for a beginner?

    Some background info first: Goal: a medium-level complexity web app that I will need to maintain and possibly extend for a few years. Experience: good knowledge of python, some experience of MVC frameworks (in PHP). Desiderata: using django and google app engine. I read extensively about the compatibility issues between GAE and Django, and I am aware of the GAE patch, the norel project, and other similar pieces of code. I have also understood that the SDK provides some of the features of django "out of the box". Yet, given that I have no previous experience with neither Django nor GAE, I am unable to evaluate to which extent using a patched version of Django will strip away important features, or how far the framework provided in the SDK is compatible with Django. So I am rather confused on what would be the best way to proceed in my situation: Should I simply use a patched version of Django as the differences with the original Django are so minor that I would hardly notice them? Should I write my app completely in "regular django" and try to port it to GAE only afterwards, when I will have got a grasp on Django internals and philosophy?   • i5 vs. i7 processor dev laptop

    Greetings! I need to get a laptop for dev work ( mostly server side Java, NetBeans ) and wonder if anyone had a chance to use either the i5 or i7 based laptop? Is the i7 an overkill? ... or will the i5 handle it just fine? I'm thinking something from the HP line running Ubuntu. Thanks

  • 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied error from web app running in IIS 7.5 using App Pool Identity

    I have an ASP.NET app on a Windows 2008 server, IIS 7.5. When I try to access web site, I get a login popup. If I click "cancel" I get a 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. The app is using Windows authentication (anonymous is disabled). The app has it's own app pool, running under the App Pool Identity. If I change the app pool to run under the NetworkService account, my website functions just fine. I'm guessing that this is just a permissions issue, but can't figure out what permissions I need to change. I gave the App Pool Identity permissions on the physical directory of the app, but that didn't solve the problem.

  • nothing in dev folder

    hi, i'm new to this so bear with me plz. im attempting to set up git on my mac and need to be using my dev folder. however, there seems to be nothing in my folder ("zero KB on disk") with no sub directories listed. other hidden directories are intact. i've never really gone this deep into things before so i'm not sure how/why anything would previously have been deleted. any help greatly appreciated.

    I am constructing a list of network interfaces to monitor based on the contents of /proc/net/dev. But I am getting some bogus interfaces in the list: __tmp1104705027 __tmp974528607 Where do those come from? They also show up in /sys/class/net/: # ls -1 /sys/class/net/ eth0 eth1 eth2 eth3 lo sit0 __tmp1104705027 __tmp974528607 For now, I think I'll just ignore anything starting with __tmp, but I'd like to know what they are and where they come from. This is on a recompiled CentOS 5.3 kernel: 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5.tvh.7PAE #1 SMP PREEMPT
