  • Dependency between operations in scala actors

    I am trying to parallelise a code using scala actors. That is my first real code with actors, but I have some experience with Java Mulithreading and MPI in C. However I am completely lost. The workflow I want to realise is a circular pipeline and can be described as the following: Each worker actor has a reference to another one, thus forming a circle There is a coordinator actor which can trigger a computation by sending a StartWork() message When a worker receives a StartWork() message, it process some stuff locally and sends DoWork(...) message to its neighbour in the circle. The neighbours do some other stuff and sends in turn a DoWork(...) message to its own neighbour. This continues until the initial worker receives a DoWork() message. The coordinator can send a GetResult() message to the initial worker and wait for a reply. The point is that the coordinator should only receive a result when data is ready. How can a worker wait that the job returned to it before answering the GetResult() message ? To speed up computation, any worker can receive a StartWork() at any time.   • Filezilla/Puttygen doesn't recognize private key file

    I have generated a key for an Ubuntu Virtual Machine running on Azure Cloud Services http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/manage/linux/how-to-guides/ssh-into-linux/ openssl req -x509 -nodes -days 365 -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout myPrivateKey.key -out myCert.pem When loading the private key into Filezilla, it asks me to convert the format, however, when converting the key it fails, the same happens with puttygen from linux console, using this: puttygen myPrivateKey.key -o myKey.ppk In both cases I have the following error: puttygen: error loading `myPrivateKey.key': unrecognised key type By the way, this key doesn't have a passphrase. I found an old thread about it, but I'm using 0.6.3 version which is newer than what this thread recommends: http://fixunix.com/ssh/541874-puttygen-unable-import-openssh-key.html I've managed to solve this issue by using another gui client Fugu for Mac, but one of my co-worker uses windows and I still have to figure this out. Since Filezilla is the de-facto ftp client, I thought it would be easier to solve it there. Thanks

    I have heard some service providers (or cloud providers), hosting companies and such complain, criticize or even venture to call foul on Microsoft’s Azure VM Role.  The problem:  None of them have gone through the effort of truly understanding (or perhaps not wanting to know) what is going on there.  Many have jumped right into the “purist” definition of IaaS, or PaaS for that matter. Ok, Buck’s post is a true gem (my opinion) in the sense it gives you parallels of what the VM Role is and is not.  And it brings Hyper-V and SCVMM to the forefront explaining what it is and what it also offers to the IaaS Microsoft offers. Here is an excerpt of the summary, but please go on over to read his post it will clear a lot if you are wondering when and how to use the Windows Azure VM Role. The excerpt: “Virtualizing servers alone has limitations of scale, availability and recovery. Microsoft’s offering in this area is Hyper-V and System Center, not the VM Role.   • You cannot do cross joins in SQL Azure but there is a way around that....

    So I was asked today how to do cross joins in SQL Azure using Linq. Well the simple answer is you cant do it. It is not supported but there are ways around that. The solution is actually very simple and easy to implement. So here is what I did and how I did it. I created two SQL Azure Databases. The first Database is called AccountDb and has a single table named Account, which has an ID, CompanyId and Name in it. The second database I called CompanyDb and it contains two tables. The first table I named Company and the second I named Address. The Company Table has an Id and Name column. The Address Table has an Id and CompanyId columns. Since we cannot do cross joins in Azure we have to have one of the models preloaded with data. I simply put the Accounts into a List of accounts and use that in my join.   var accounts = new AccountsModelContainer().Accounts.ToList(); var companies = new CompanyModelContainer().Companies; var query = from account in accounts             join company in                 (                       from c in companies                      select c                  ) on account.CompanyId equals company.Id             select new AccountView() {                                               AccountName = account.Name, CompanyName = company.Name,                                 Addresses = company.Addresses                         }; return query.ToList();   So as long as you have your data loaded from one of the contexts you can still execute your queries and get the data back that you want.

  • Generating authentication header from azure table through objective-c

    I'm fetching data from iCloud and for that I need to generate a header (azure table storage). I used the code below for that and it is generating the headers. But when I use these headers in my project it is showing "make sure that the value of authorization header is formed correctly including the signature."   • SharePoint: You cannot grant limited access permission level

    In my team, we implemented some UI to set user access rights (assign/revoke permission levels) on a certain SharePoint list. The UI supplies a "undo" feature: If you change the rights over the UI, you can restore the rights the user had before by clicking "undo". Now there is a problem if the user had the "Limited Access" permission level: This permission level is removed when you do a change over the UI. When trying to Undo, the permission level should be added again, which leads to a You cannot grant a user the limited access permission level. I've read that SharePoint grants that right automatically when a user gets access to some entity beneath the site. Still I can revoke the right manually, but then I cannot re-grant it. Is there a proper way I could work around that? My thoughts: Did I get it right that this "limited access" is granted by SharePoint on the site level only? So, do all the lists beneath the site only contain that permission level "accidentally" because they inherit it? Does that permission level have any effect at all on a list, or does it only apply to the site itself? So, would it be save to just remove it from a list and do not add it anymore when the user clicks "undo", since it has no effect anyway? (My UI always works on list / list item level, never on the whole site/web).

  • How do you model roles / relationships with Domain Driven Design in mind?

    If I have three entities, Project, ProjectRole and Person, where a Person can be a member of different Projects and be in different Project Roles (such as "Project Lead", or "Project Member") - how would you model such a relationship? In the database, I currently have the following tablers: Project, Person, ProjectRole Project_Person with PersonId & ProjectId as PK and a ProjectRoleId as a FK Relationship. I'm really at a loss here since all domain models I come up with seem to break some "DDD" rule. Are there any 'standards' for this problem? I had a look at a Streamlined Object Modeling and there is an example what a Project and ProjectMember would look like, but AddProjectMember() in Project would call ProjectMember.AddProject(). So Project has a List of ProjectMembers, and each ProjectMember in return has a reference to the Project. Looks a bit convoluted to me. update After reading more about this subject, I will try the following: There are distinct roles, or better, model relationships, that are of a certain role type within my domain. For instance, ProjectMember is a distinct role that tells us something about the relationship a Person plays within a Project. It contains a ProjectMembershipType that tells us more about the Role it will play. I do know for certain that persons will have to play roles inside a project, so I will model that relationship. ProjectMembershipTypes can be created and modified. These can be "Project Leader", "Developer", "External Adviser", or something different. A person can have many roles inside a project, and these roles can start and end at a certain date.     I define a method inside a parametrized role that needs to create a new class at run time using Moose::Meta::Class->create and apply that exact parametrized role to it. I am also making a new method for that role using $new_class->meta->add_method( some_name => sub { my ($self) = @_; ... }) inside the sub {...} I want to access a method of the consumer class and use it for something, I have tried using $self->get_method, it didn't work, how do I do this? Please notice that the $self inside the sub above is MooseX::Role::Parameterized::Meta::Role::Parameterizable I also have another question, if I do this: my $object = Moose::Meta::Class->create( "some_type", ); Why isn't $object of type some_type and it's some ugly MooseX::Role::Parameterized::Meta::Role::Parameterizable and how do I get to the object of type some_type?

  • System architecture: simple approach for setting up background tasks behind a web application -- wil

    I have a Django web application and I have some tasks that should operate (or actually: be initiated) on the background. The application is deployed as follows: apache2-mpm-worker; mod_wsgi in daemon mode (1 process, 15 threads). The background tasks have the following characteristics: they need to operate in a regular interval (every 5 minutes or so); they require the application context (i.e. the application packages need to be available in memory); they do not need any input other than database access, in order to perform some not-so-heavy tasks such as sending out e-mail and updating the state of the database. Now I was thinking that the most simple approach to this problem would be simply to piggyback on the existing application process (as spawned by mod_wsgi). By implementing the task as part of the application and providing an HTTP interface for it, I would prevent the overhead of another process that is holding all of the application into memory. A simple cronjob can be setup that sends a request to this HTTP interface every 5 minutes and that would be it. Since the application process provides 15 threads and the tasks are quite lightweight and only running every 5 minutes, I figure they would not be hindering the performance of the web application's user-facing operations. Yet... I have done some online research and I have seen nobody advocating this approach. Many articles suggest a significantly more complex approach based on a full-blown messaging component (such as Celery, which uses RabbitMQ). Although that's sexy, it sounds like overkill to me. Some articles suggest setting up a cronjob that executes a script which performs the tasks. But that doesn't feel very attractive either, as it results in creating a new process that loads the entire application into memory, performs some tiny task, and destroys the process again. And this is repeated every 5 minutes. Does not sound like an elegant solution. So, I'm looking for some feedback on my suggested approach as described in the paragraph before the preceeding paragraph. Is my reasoning correct? Am I overlooking (potential) problems? What about my assumption that application's performance will not be impeded?

    I'm starting to use Role Management in my website, and I'm current following along on the tutorial from http://www.asp.net/Learn/Security/tutorial-02-vb.aspx . I'm having a problem with the asp:LoginStatus control. It is not telling me that I am currently logged in after a successful login. This can't be true because after successfully logging in, my LoggedInTemplate is shown. The username and passwords are simply stored in a array. Heres the Login.aspx page code.   • Group vs role (Any real difference?)

    Can anyone tell me, what's the real difference between group and role? Ive been trying to figure this out for some time now and the more information I read, the more I get the sence, that this is brought up just to confuse people and there is no proper difference in this. Both can do the other one's job. Ive always used a group to manage users and their access rights. Recently, I've come accross an administration software, where is a bunch of users. Each user can have assigned a module (whole system is split into a few parts called modules ie. Administration module, Survey module, Orders module, Customer module). On top of it, each module have a list of functionalities, that can be allowed or denied for each user. So let's say, a user John Smith can access module Orders and can edit any order, but havent given a right to delete any of them. If there was more users with the same competency, I would use a group to manage that. I would aggregate such users into the same group and assign access rights to modules and their functions to the group. All users in the same group would have the same access rights. Why call it a group and not role? I don't know, I just feel it that way. It seems to me, that simply it just doesnt really matter :] But I still would like to know the real difference. What about you guys? Any suggestions why this should be rather called role than group or the other way round? Thanks to everyone.

  • LDAP/AD Integrated Group/Membership Management Package suitable for embedding in an application

    In several web applications, it is often necessary to define groups of users for purposes of membership as well as role management. For example, in one of our applications we would like to user a group of "Network Engineers" and another group that consists of "Managers" of such Network Engineers. The information we need is contact details of members of each group. So far, we have written our own tools to allow the administrator of the application to add/delete/move groups and their memberships and either store them in a XML file or a database. Increasingly, companies already have the groups we want defined in LDAP/AD, so it would be best to create a pointer in our application to the correspoding group in LDAP. Although there are a number of LDAP libraries and LDAP browsers available and we could code this and provide a web front end to get a list of available groups and their members, we are wondering if there is already a "component framework" available that would readily provide this LDAP browsing functionality that we could just embed this into our application. Something between a library and a full LDAP browser product ? (To clarify, the use case is for an admin of our web application to create a locally relevant group name and then map it to an exiting LDAP group. To enable this in the UI, we would like to present a way for the admin to browse available groups in the company LDAP server, view their membership, and select the LDAP group they would like to map to the locally relevant group name. In a second step, we would then synchronize the members of that LDAP group and their contact details to a store in our application ) Appreciate any pointers.

  • how to refactor user-permission system?

    Sorry for lengthy question. I can't tell if this should be a programming question or a project management question. Any advice will help. I inherited a reasonably large web project (1 year old) from a solo freelancer who architected it then abandoned it. The project was a mess, but I cleaned up what I could, and now the system is more maintainable. I need suggestions on how to extend the user-permission system. As it is now, the database has a t_user table with the column t_user.membership_type. Currently, there are 4 membership types with the following properties: 3 of the membership types are almost functionally the same, except for the different monthly fees each must pay 1 of the membership type is a "fake-user" type which has limited access ( different business logic also applies) With regards to the fake-user type, if you look in the system's business logic files, you will see a lot of hard-coded IF statements that do something like if (fake-user) { // do something } else { // a paid member of type 1,2 or 3 // proceed normally } My client asked me to add 3 more membership types to the system, each of them with unique features to be implemented this month, and substantive "to-be-determined" features next month. My first reaction is that I need to refactor the user-permission system. But it concerns me that I don't have enough information on the "to-be-determined" membership type features for next month. Refactoring the user-permission system will take a substantive amount of time. I don't want to refactor something and throw it out the following month. I get substantive feature requests on a monthly basis that come out of the blue. There is no project road map. I've asked my client to provide me with a roadmap of what they intend to do with the new membership types, but their answer is along the lines of "We just want to do [feature here] this month. We'll think of something new next month." So questions that come to mind are: 1) Is it dangerous for me to refactor the user permission system not knowing what membership type features exist beyond a month from now? 2) Should I refactor the user permission system regardless? Or just continue adding IF statements as needed in all my controller files? Or can you recommend a different approach to user permission systems? Maybe role-based ? 3) Should this project have a road map? For a 1 year old project like mine, how far into the future should this roadmap project? 4) Any general advice on the best way to add 3 new membership types?

    I am building a SaaS product. When a user signs up for an account they must select an alias for their site --------.getlaunchpoint.com. Right now I have an A record *.getlaunchpoint.com that points to the ip address server. However, with Azure I am not given an IP address. The suggested implementation is to make use of a CNAME. I need to create a CNAME for *.getlaunchpoint.com - getlaunchpoint.cloudapp.net GoDaddy does not support CNAME wildcards. Searching on Google I'm getting conflicting information... is CNAME wildcard a bad practice? I run into the same problem with Amazon EC2 if I want to make use of load balancers because you cannot tie a public IP address to an Amazon Load Balancer. Amazon also suggests the use of a CNAME. Any help would be appreciated.

    I honestly don't even know where to start.. I created a Windows Server 2012 (Azure) VM, inside of VM I THOUGHT I did everything whatever is required to run ASP.NET application.. BUT that wasn't a case. I'm stuck and unable to run a simple ASP.NET app HelloWorld( and I blame Microsoft! I had everything running before they decided to wipe out my VM so that's why I'm redoing that VM. What can I do to resolve this? Where should I look? My HelloWorld application returns Internal Server Error 500.19. I've must have missed something somewhere, but I need someone help me to pinpoint. PLEASE HELP!

    Much is made of the CAP trade-off for data storage where conflicts can be introduced if there is a network partition. My question is there any evidence that this is a problem that arises with any significant frequency in modern cloud IAAS services e.g.; EC2, Azure, Rackspace. Is it a problem which, despite being a theoretical roadblock in constructing idealised distributed systems is, in fact, a non-issue for all practical concerns? Has anyone experienced a network partition within one of these systems (within a single data-centre?) If so would you be willing to share any details?

  • How to trigger chef-client on all nodes from my workstation

    I have 5 nodes and all of them have one setup cook-book in common. Now I would like to add another task in this common cookbook that would configure SQL server for me on all the nodes. Is there a way/command to manually trigger this change across all clients right away? I use azure VM's. All the nodes are Windows Server 2012 machines. I could do a knife winrm machine-name chef-client -m -x username -P password on all the machines, but i'm sure there should be a better way of doing this. I'm new to using chef, so I might be missing a very basic command here.

  • Detach Disk from deleted virtual machine

    I had an Virtual Machine running in Azure for a couple of weeks and suddenly it stopped responding. I shut it down and tried to restart it but that failed saying the VM faulted. I then deleted the VM which leaves the VHD file intact on my storage account. I was intending to try recreating a new VM using thie VHD from the first VM however, the OS disk and Data disk are both still marked as being attached to the original VM which no longer exists. Is there any way to detach these disks so I can use them to create a new VM?
