• C# WinForms & SQL bindings

  I have a MSSQL database with many tables and relations. I want to bind it to my C# GUI application with text- and combo-boxes. Which one is the best way to do it: (1) Everything done manually by own classes and methods: Import data to dataset or to many datatables separately, then create dictionaries to comboboxes, manually retrieve data to textboxes and create a sql statement if update action will be invoked, or, (2) Done automatically by VS: Connect my controls with BindingSource and BindingNavigator if needed. I know how to deal with the first one, but if the second way would be better, my question is — how to achieve it? I haven't dealt with automatically created databindings and I don't know how to tell to DataBinding property (Key|Value|Text) about relations and current row's ID. And what is the method to cancel/update changes in all GUI elements? I need a simple solution for this scenario. It's a quick-and-dirty academical project, which must only "work" and be as fast implemented as it can. Thanks

• Referencing a control programatically with external source

  Forgive me about the title, I have no idea what this is called. I have a MS Access database set up, with a Period field that has either values 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. I retrieve these values using a database connection and I would like to reference a particular control based on what period was grabbed from the database. Here's example code, pseudo of course. TextBox(dr(3)).Text = dr(0) dr(3) contains the period, and dr(0) contains the content I would like to put into the text box. I have these text boxes on my form: TextBox1, TextBox2, TextBox3, TextBox4 and TextBox5. So if dr(3) contained 2 then I would want to reference TextBox2. I hope I've made myself clear, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. :)

• Keystrokes in Winforms app causing window to close unexpectedly

  I have a strange issue that has arisen recently: Whenever I enter text, even a single character, into a textbox in any Form in my application it causes the form and its parent to close. I've checked for the following so far: Errant/mis-assigned event handlers that may be interpreting a keystroke as a Form cancel I am using keypreview in several windows but debugging shows this to not be a cause Happens in any form of the application Happens even with brand new text boxes dropped on the form Tried removing the WithEvents declaration from text box declarations (VB.NET) The result is DialogResult.Cancel when I break the code after Show or ShowDialog The forms do not use AcceptButton or CancelButton properties (set to none) Note: I am modifying a large codebase with a lot of code that I have yet to touch What else could be causing this strange behavior?

  I have a form with 3 text boxes that all do the same thing. They each call the JQuery function below after each keypress. Since I have 3 textboxes that all do the same thing, I'd like this function to work for all three. • jquery validation of comtrols

  Hi , I am looking at validation of some text boxes for somethings like required, minlength, max length, email etc... I am able to get examples that work fine on submit button on page. I want to do this validation on a button click which will only raise a ajax request and not submit of page. On internet all the sample is found was with submit button. Is there a easy way to change this code a little bit o make it work for non submit button click or any new jquery or java plugin to do the same. I am using the jquery.validation.js for now. This works with submit buttons. Any kind of help with suggestion or help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Java JEditorPane Format

  im trying to implement a Chat feature in my application. i have used 2 JEditorPane. one for holding chat history and the other for sending chat to the previous JEditorPane. the JEditorPane is text/html type. the problem i am having is when i put more than one space between characters it is automatically removed by the parser because it is HTML! how can i make it so, that the spaces are not stripped? example: hello world becomes: hello world. also i am having to parse the html tags so the new messages can be added to the history window. is there a better option than using JEditorPane? if i used JTextPane would it be easier to implement? i would like the chat boxes/panes to be able to handle bold, URL embedding for now. thank you and look forward to your guidance.

• How to change id value when using Html.DropDownListFor helper in asp.net mvc 2.0?

  Hi I have a partial view that has something like this <%= Html.DropDownListFor(m => m.SelectedProductName, Model.ProductList, "Select a Product") %> Now you can create a new product and edit a existing product. Both editing and creating use the same form. The create is on the main page on load up. Edit popus up in a jquery u.i model dialog and renders a new partial view. So as far as the page is concerned is that I have 2 dropdown boxes with the same "id" which is bad since they should be unique. So how do I change the id? So when the edit loads it might have a id of "editSelectedProductName"? I tried to do this in the view model public string SelectedProductName{ get; set; } ViewModelConstructor() { SelectedProductName = "EditSelectedProductName"; } But it seems to not care and keeps using "SelectedProductName" as the product name. • IE7 float/clear bug

  I am having the weirdest behavior in IE7 on this page. I have a clear: left on #moored that makes sure that #content-container will expand to the height of the float: left'd #content. Of course, Firefox and IE8 do it right. The weird thing though, is in IE7, it appears that #content-container is automatically expanding to contain the #secondary-content, which it shouldn't. Even weirder is when I view with IE8 with developer tools, the boundary boxes seem to show the that the #content-container is the expanding to the height of the #secondary-container, even though the background: #fff tells a different story. The background goes to where it should, and the void is now black. I've Googled a bit and came across heaps of similar float bugs, but I don't think I've found one which offers a fix yet for this circumstance. Can anyone please help me?

• Nested flowlayout panel not wrapping

  I've got a FlowLayoutPanel with properties: Dock = Fill (in a usercontrol) FlowDirection = TopDown WrapContents = false I do it this way so that each item added to the panel gets added to the bottom. The items that I add to this panel are usercontrols which themselves have FlowLayoutPanels on them, however they have the standard behaviour (LeftToRight, WrapContents = true). The problem that I'm having is that the interior usercontrol's FlowLayoutPanel isn't resizing to fill the outer control, but when I set autosizing to true on these controls, then the panel won't wrap its contents - which is a known problem apparently. • Database Network Latency

  Hi All, I am currently working on an n-tier system and battling some database performance issues. One area we have been investigating is the latency between the database server and the application server. In our test environment the average ping times between the two boxes is in the region of 0.2ms however on the clients site its more in the region of 8.2 ms. Is that somthing we should be worried about? For your average system what do you guys consider a resonable latency and how would you go about testing/measuring the latency? Karl

  Hi, I hope this question isn't tagged as too generic. But this is an honest concern/curiosity I have. Are you people still supporting Internet Explorer 6? Web developers sometimes use the concept of softly degrading their projects in older browsers. When I say "older", I mean mainly Internet Explorer 6. When you softly degrade you still have to waste tons of time tryng to fit things in IE6. This is time consuming and the client usually won`t even mind asking or checking how things look in IE6. So what are you doing when your website is completely broken in IE6? Do you bother to completely fix it and eat up your time or do you simply ignore it (leave broken boxes, opaque PNG files etc.)?

• R heatmaps - non-text labels?

  I am making a heatmap plot; currently the axes are labeled by index number. However, the index number corresponds to a series of 1/0s, which my group typically represents with a row of filled(1) or unfilled(0) boxes (think chessboard, though not strictly alternating colors). I'd like to use that representation instead of the index numbers. Any suggestions? I've considered simply making the labels as a plot, and positioning that adjacent to the heatmap, but I'm not finding a convenient way to do that either. I will also appreciate answers that are more generically applicable. edit - current code: map <- data.matrix(read.csv("./heatmap.out", header=F, sep=" ")) # ...some clean-up p<-heatmap(map, Rowv=NA, Colv=NA, col=grey(10:0 / 10)) this simply labels the heatmap rows/cols by index number. heatmap.out is raw numeric data.

  For usability purposes I like to set up my form fields this way: <?php $username = $_POST['username']; $message = $_POST['message']; ?> <input type="text" name="username" value="<?php echo $username; ?>" /> <textarea name="message"><?php echo $message; ?></textarea> This way if the user fails validation, the form input he entered previously will still be there and there would be no need to start from scratch. My problem is I can't seem to keep check boxes selected with the option that the user had chosen before (when the page refreshes after validation fails). How to do this?

• Can IIS admin change password of Windows Service account

  We have a service account defined for anonymous access which is used for several web sites hosted on the web server. This account has access to several network resources like report server, file servers and so on. While deploying a new web site, we used the same service account for anonymous access. IIS takes the username/password for the account and then a dialog opens for confirm password. Accidently, we gave a wrong password in both the text boxes, the new site with wrong password is working fine but all other previously hosted sites which were using the service account, started giving the unautorized access error. Is it possible that when we entered wrong password for the new web site, the password of the account got reset and all sites stopped functioning?

Right now, the check boxes do not align due to the widths of the <td> of each checkbox label being an automatic width. • System.Net.WebProxy in .NET Client

  I don't yet have a good understanding of how the network is set up at my current client, but here is my issue. The vendor has a normal URL, but it might be a leased line. I have a .NET program that calls an external .asmx service. If I go to IE, Connections, LAN Settings, and uncheck "Automatic detect settings" and uncheck "Use Automatic Configuration Sript", then the .NET program runs and access the web service fine. But then, to access internet again from the browser, I have to re-check the two boxes, and so on throughout the day while we are testing and browsing. I'm hoping to put some code like this in the .NET program to avoid us having to constantly change: if (chkUseProxy.Checked) { myclient.Proxy = new System.Net.WebProxy(""); } I tried null and empty string and so far not able to connect without errors. Is this possible, and if so, what might be the correct parms for the constructor? Or are there other objects or properties that would need to be set? Thanks, Neal Walters

• jQuery UI Draggable-Droppable overflow:visible

  Sadly, I am unable to provide any JSFiddle for this issue, as I cant seem to reproduce it outside my project. I have a container where there are some boxes, that can be arranged using drag and drop, by utilizing jQuery UI. The problem is, that the container is overflow:auto; but it needs to be overflow:visible;, but if I do that, jQuery UI malfunctions. When a box drag is initiated, it will immediatly jump up aproximately 400-500px. This is how the draggable is created: $(".draggable").draggable({ revert: 'invalid', // when not dropped, the item will revert back to its initial position containment: '#editContainer', // stick to demo-frame if present helper: 'original', cursor: 'move' }); Is this a bug with jQuery UI, or can this be fixed on my end? • ASP.Net: User controls added to placeholder dynamically cannot retrieve values.

  I am adding some user controls dynamically to a PlaceHolder server control. My user control consists of some labels and some textbox controls. When I submit the form and try to view the contents of the textboxes (within each user control) on the server, they are empty. When the postback completes, the textboxes have the data that I entered prior to postback. This tells me that the text in the boxes are being retained through ViewState. I just don't know why I can't find them when I'm debugging. Can someone please tell me why I would not be seeing the data the user entered on the server? Thanks for any help.

It works in all modern browsers apart from ie7, in which you can drag and drop, but when you drop, it completely ruins the content of the box you're dropping.
