  • How to diagnose a hang when creating a new folder in explorer.exe

    I have been having some issues with explorer.exe hanging when I create a new folder. If I use Analyse Wait Chain in the Resource Monitor it says "One or more threads of explorer.exe are waiting to finish network I/O". So I decided to try and user TraceView.exe to try and listen in on the explorer.exe traces. The problem is TraceView requires some difficult-to-come-by stuff... either pdbs, or CTL files, and .TMF files. I tried using the explorer.pdb that comes with the Windows SDK but that did not work. I do not see explorer.exe in the "named providers". And I have no idea where to locate the ctl or .TMF files for explorer.exe. So the question is: Is there a way to view the ETW trace messages from explorer? Or shall I just not bother and go back to the age old technique of disabling every explorer extenion one-by-one in the hope its one of them. (Prefer the former as I like to get to the bottom of things!!)

  • Unable to remove Read-Only attribute from folder in Windows XP

    I have this directory which I cannot remove the read only attribute from. The computer is running XP SP2 (or SP3, not sure) and the directory sits in a NTFS file system. Looking into the web I found this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256614 which tells that if the directory is "customized" it's treated as a system folder and thus "read only". I don't think this is a scenario in my case, but anyway it's not helping, their recommendation is more or less: attr -r -s /d /s d:\data and this is not working for me. Any other ideas? More info: The directory is served to an HTTP server (wamp) and the directory is an SVN check out. What happens is that the web server cannot write files into the directory (imagechace from drupal is you are really interested). Edit 2: The original post claimed that the directory sits on a VFAT FS, however I booted Fedora 11 from livecd and the partition is marked as NTFS. Edit 3: I left the company which I worked on, on which this situation happened... so I cannot fully close this question. But things get even worse: I tested the "attr -r" answer I put, it did not work for me, and now the developer said that it worked for her. A nice WTF moment. Probably a reboot helped... Sorry for loosing details. If anyone has the same problem, and one of the answers helps him - please comment.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 - VPN Folder Sharing Permissions

    I have setup VPN access to my Windows Server 2008 R2 server using RRAS. Clients can connect, run applications, view shares etc. My problem is that one of the applications that they use relies on some network shares. The application is not able to access the shares unless the user first goes into Windows Explorer and accesses the share, providing their user name and password (the same one that they use to connect via the VPN). Previously on a different Windows Server 2008 (not R2) this was not necessary i.e. the application and user could access the share without providing another user name and password. I have tried giving the Everyone group full control over the shared folder - both on the Security tab and in the Permissions area under Advanced Sharing on the Sharing tab. This still did not resolve the issue. (I don't really want to give Everyone access anyway - I was hoping that granting access to a group that the VPN users had membership of would be enough). I have also turned off password protected sharing in the Advanced Sharing Settings area of the Network and Sharing Center (under both Home or Work and Public). So my question is what is preventing my VPN users from having access to these folders without having to re-supply the same login and password that they use to access the VPN? And what is the best practice in this type of scenario?

    I have a NAS device, it has 3 shares. On one computer I have access to all 3 of the shares. On another computer I keep getting this error when try and add a 2nd one. The Network folder specified is currently mapped using a different user name and password [...] That is the message I keep getting. What causes that?   • Synchronising a remote folder with a local one.

    I am using a network disk (that's connected to my router by USB) to store several data files. A simple .NET application that I've created is supposed to read and modify these data files. However, some security issues are preventing this application to access these files directly. (Actually, these have been built-in to my application on purpose since it's not going to support NAS disks.) Since this disk is shared with several computers, I just want to have a simple synchronisation method, which will copy the files to a local folder where3 my application can access them. And, once modified, it should send back the modified files to the NAS disk again. I have two options: 1) Build a second application to do my own synchronisation. 2) Find some build-in function inside Windows 7 Ultimate which can do this for me. Option 2 is preferred. Option 1 is something I can do easily, if need be. I don't need third-party tools. (Still, feel free to add some references to good tools, although I won't accept them as answers.) Basically, is this possible with Windows 7 and if so, how?

  • Restoring a fresh home folder in a shared user domain environment

    I am using a tool called pGINA that adds another credential provider to my Windows 7 clients so we can authenticate campus users via campus LDAP. We have the default Windows credential providers setup to authenticate off of our Active Directory, but we have students in our classes that don't have entries in our AD, and we need to know who they are to allow them internet access. Once these LDAP users login using pGINA, they are all redirected to the same AD account, a 'kiosk' account with GPOs in place to prevent anything malicious. My concern is that my users will accidentally save personal login information or files in that shared profile, and another user may login later and have access to a previous user's Gmail account, as the AppData folder on each computer is shared by anyone logging into the kiosk user. I've looked into MS's 'roll-your-own' SteadyState but it didn't seem to have what I wanted. I tried to write a PS script to copy a pre-saved clean version of the profile from a network share, but I just kept running into issues with CredSSP delegation and accessing the share from the UNC path. Others have recommended something like DeepFreeze but I'd like to do it without 3rd party tools if possible.

  • Simulate a DFS share for a user not on domain with a folder in path

    I have a consultant whose computer is not on the domain and needs to access various network resources. Unfortunately while adding a computer to the domain is a difficult bureaucratic process (and would disallow much of his development software from even running given the domain restrictions), we can allow him to have credentials to access network resources. As such, he accesses various network resources via NET USE etc. without using DFS. There is one piece of software which requires him to have the same hardcoded path as other domain users but that path is a DFS path which he can't map (i.e., the software checks the path at runtime and will only run if it matches the registered path and will reject it in the context of using a DFS versus conventional machine path) I was wondering if there's some method to simulate the DFS path without actually using DFS. e.g., the path the software needs to see is "\ABC\DFS\software\app.exe" whereas the non DFS path is "\DEF\Software\app.exe" while I could make his hosts file point DEF to ABC, I'm not sure if I can somehow make it point there with the DFS "folder" as well are there any methods for this short of making changes to the AD to allow him to use DFS or add him to the domain (both of which are politically/technically challenging sadly)?     I'm encountering a weird issue with .gitignore on Windows. I want git to ignore all .exe files, except those in the Dependencies folder (and all subfolders). So I have: .gitignore: *.exe !/Dependencies/**/*.exe This, unfortunately, does not work. Meanwhile, this does: *.exe !/Dependencies/folder/subfolder/*.exe So I'm wondering, am I messing something up, or is this some kind of bug? I'm running msysgit on Windows (Windows 7 x64) version 1.6.5.1-preview20091022 Thanks in advance for any input :)

    Hi When Compiling my Web Deployment Project which references a Asp.Net project with a App_Browsers folder I get the following compilation error: C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_compiler.exe -v /[PROJECTNAME].csproj -p "[FILEPATH]" -u -f -d .\TempBuildDir\ ASPNETCOMPILER : error ASPRUNTIME: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. If I remove the App_Browsers folder everything works perfectly. Any help would be appreciated.

  • IIS5 to IIS6 upgrade, and the bin folder

    We had a website running under IIS5 which used the bin directory as a housing for some asp pages as well as files for download and after upgrading to IIS6, we only get a 404 error when trying to access anything in that folder. We do not store any sensitive information in there, or code, and it would require a major overhaul of not only our system, but our clients' systems as well. Is there some configuration setting we are overlooking or is it just that IIS6 will no longer let you use the bin folder as just another directory?

The app works fine in development mode, but when I start the server in production mode via rails server -e production, it seems that the public folder can't be found. I get error messages like: ActionController::RoutingError (No route matches "/javascripts/jquery.js"): And similar messages for everything that should be in the public folder. I've tried this with both mongrel and webrick. I'd appreciate any help.
