  hi we lately purchase few dell servers all of them from Rxxx series couple of R410 and R710 the OS we used on those servers is: CentOS 5.4 we're getting very weird error messages and we lost network connectivity couple of times (restarting the network interface was needed to fix it) the messages we're getting are: Message from syslogd@ at Wed Nov 18 12:07:08 2009 ... servername kernel: Uhhuh.   I am eager to get this answer i.e. in Windows 7 when we format the computer there is a problem that when we have to select drive for formatting, it doesn't show drive letter. *I need a solution wherein when I format I want to know its drive letter so that I may not be confused while formatting. *See the difference between windows xp and windows 7. I want windows 7 to show drive letters like windows xp. Does any one know why windows 7 doesn't show drive letters.

• Need help setting up OpenLDAP on OSX Mountain Lion

  I'm trying to get OpenLDAP manually configured on OSX Mountain Lion. I'd prefer to do it manually instead of installing OSX server, but if that's the only option (i.e., OpenLDAP on OSX isn't meant to be used without server) then I'll just install it. I've seen guides that mostly just say to change the password in slapd.conf and then start the server and it should work. However, whenever I try to do anything with the client it tells me this: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) I've tried encrypting the password as well as leaving it plain it doesn't seem to matter. The version is 2.4.28 and I've read as of 2.4 OpenLDAP uses slapd.d directories, but that doesn't seem to be the case in OSX. There was mention of an 'olcRootPW' I should use (instead of 'rootpw' in slapd.conf), but I only found that in a file named slapd.ldif. So ... I'm really confused. Has anyone got OpenLDAP working on OSX Moutain Lion without the server tools?

• Connecting CR 2008 and Oracle database: "TNS file could not be opened"

  I am trying to connect to an Oracle database using CR 2008 drivers for oracle (specifically OLE db driver). When I try to connect I provide the correct connection parameters however I keep getting "TNS file could not be opened" error. I am very confused about this message does this mean I am missing some component? From my understanding the driver should be able to connect. Currently on the computer running Crystal reports there is only has Crystal reports 2008 installed. Do i need to install the oracle instant client on the CR computer in order to make a proper connection? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Edit : Ok i found that it work now, think it has always work but my isp seems to support ipv6 sometimes and sometimes not ... weird

• Redhat Kernel patching advice

  An audit has pointed out that a RHEL server I manage has not had the latest kernel patches applied. I'm confused about kernel patching and within RHEL in relation to RHEL dot releases i.e 5.2 , 5.3 ,5.4 ..... Can someone answer these questions ? If I want to stay at a dot release of RHEL, say 5.4, can apply just updates to the 5.4 kernel or will applying kernel updates bring the server to a later dot release by default? The reason for this question is that I have applications that are only supported on say RHEL5.4 and going to a more recent dot release of RHEL 5 would break the support. I have some HP psp hba drivers compiled against the currently installed kernel, will applying a kernel update break these drivers as they were complied against the orginal kernel ? Anything else I need to look out for with regards to kernel patching ?

• How can I tell if ZFS (zfs-fuse) dedup/compression is applied to a particular file?

  I have a zfs formatted partition using zfs-fuse for linux (Ubuntu). I had used it for a while, and then enabled dedup and compression on it (zfs set compression=on/dedup=on). Now I think I have some files that are dedup'ed and compressed, and file that are not yet. It was OK, but sometimes I was confused. Let's see, following command would consume almost 4GB of my zfs storage: cp oldfile.4GB newfile.4GB .. and this would consume almost zero: cp newfile.4GB newfile.4GB.2 This is because the old file is not yet compressed, so dedup not happened, I think. My idea is -- if I can find old files that are not yet dedup/compressed, I can perform batch copy/rename/remove them to eliminate duplicity and redundancy. But how I can check that? I know I can re-copy whole contents of my storage should work (even better with checking the time stamp of each file), but I'd be happier if I have zfsstat-like tool that shows some file properties.

• How to tell LAMP server to look at 2nd HDD for files when php is still pointing to a location on 1st HDD?

  I have a phpBB install that currently has its attachments stored on my main HDD, but I am running out of room there fast. So I want to get a 2nd HDD installed on the server and put all of the phpBB files on that instead. So my question is how can I tell phpBB to look at my 2nd HDD for the files when it is still pointing to a location on 1st HDD? I've read a bit about softlinks and mod_alias but am still confused about how they work exactly. Does anyone know a good way to do this?

• deploying a Python application from a PHP developer

  I'm a little confused on the deployment process for Python. Let's say you create a brand new project with virtualenv source bin/activate pip install a few libraries write a simple hello world app pip freeze the dependencies When I deploy this code into a machine, do I need first make sure the machine is sourced before installing dependencies? I don't mean to sound like a total noob but in the PHP world, I don't have to worry about this because it's already part of the project. All the dependencies are registered with the autoloader in place. The steps would be: rsync the files (or any other method) source bin/activate pip install the dependencies from the pip freeze output file It feels awkward, or just wrong and very error prone. What are the correct steps to make? I've searched around but it seems many tutorials/articles make an assumption that anyone reading the article has past python experience (imo).

• Forward a port with modem (with built-in but disabled router) + a separate router

  I have a Motorola SBG6580 that is a modem and a wireless router in one. However, the wireless router part was bad so I disabled it and got a separate wireless router. I can go into the configuration pages of both the modem and the router now, and I'm confused as to which device needs to be configured for port-forwarding. I have a raspberry pi that I want to set up as a webserver. Do I configure the router, the modem, or both? Right now, the SBG6580's 1st LAN is connected to the wireless router's WAN, and the internet is working well. Note that the SBG6580 only has 4 ports, and I'm assuming they're LAN,as they are not labeled.

  Hi! I've managed to install pnp4nagios 0.6.3 and I'm a bit confused about how pnp4nagios generates graphics. Almost out of the box, it started graphs for ping and some http servers (not all of them). But, how can I make it graph things like disk utilization (When that value comes from SNMP)?? For example, ls /usr/local/pnp4nagios/var/perfdata/isis/ Cola_de_Mail.rrd Cola_de_Mail.xml HTTP.rrd HTTP.xml PING.rrd PING.xml Those are checks running on the host isis, but there are many other checks for that server that are not taken into account by pnp4nagios. How can I make pnp4nagios "see" the other checks?? Thanks!

  I'm having an issue with our NSMExpress box. I'm trying to manage all our devices, range from ns5gt to ssg320m, and some of those devices have addresses assigned by dhcp from the ISP (like pppoe or dsl). The addresses are actually static but we have the register the MAC address in order to get this address. I can actually add the device in NSM except the IP that's on the untrust side isn't imported in as it's dynamic. Because of this I cannot change many options that pertian to the untrust interface as there is no IP. I've talked to JTAC on this and they didn't know if there was a way to do this or not but then they stated that Tim Hortons does this so I'm confused on how to get this working. Maybe i'm just missing something as I imagine that other people must be doing this as well. Any assistance is appreciated! Furthermore when I import a device this is the message I get: Warnings: Interface ethernet0/0 is a pppoe/dhcp/pppoa client and its ip is NOT IMPORTED because it may be dynamic.

• General website publishing questions involving domain forwarding issue

  Even though I have been having a certain level of knowledge and experience about web development I have never interested in obtaining a domain and publishing a website from my own server. Since today I have been struggling with getting my own domain and configuring it utilizing web sources. I started with learning the outline of web publishing process including web server installation, deploying a website for testing purpose,router port forwarding, getting a domain and forwarding domain to my router which will also forward http requests to my web server I am confused about some parts and so far could not get the web site accessed from outside of the network. All I try to do is just for learning purpose so I do not pay much attention to security issues for now. I have Server 2008 and IIS 7.5 installed. I use a laptop and have access to the modem over wireless and my modem is Zoom x6 5590. Well I will continue explaining what I have done so far and what I think will be after each action I did, I have successfully had access to my website on any local computer entering the internal ip address and port pair of the host machine in a browser. Next, I forwarded port 80 of my host machine creating a virtual server like 10.0.0.x(internal ip(static) of the host) - tcp - start port : 80 - end port : 80 in router options. Now I suppose every request that will come to the public Ip on port 80 will be forwarded to my host machine(10.0.0.x) over port 80. So If everyhing went as desired, the website listening on port 80 will accept the request and process the issue and finally respond bla bla bla... I suppose to access my website from outside of the network by entering http://MyPublicIp:80 in a browser but I couldn't accomplish this task by now despite using godady's domain forwarding tool,I see a small view of my website when I click the "preview" button that checks whether the address(http://publicip/Index.aspx) I entered where my domain will be forwarded is available or not. I am sure that configuring domain does not play a role in solving such a problem since using public ip and port matching does not help. So here is the first question, What is the fact that I face this problem? After that, I have couple of question regarding domain forwarding using godaddy tool. Can I forward my domain to a any port for example port 8080 other than default http port 80? Additionally, can I use a sub-domain to forward to a different port of the host? What I want to design is if the client enters www.mydomain.com, website1 will respond over a specified port and after when a client enters info.mydomain.com, another website which listens on different port will respond. I tried to add a sub-domain and forward it to a address like http://www.mydomain.com:8080/Index.aspx with no success. Can I really do that? Finally, what if I have a ftp site listening on the default port 21 and I create a domain like ftp.mydomain.com that will forward to that ftp site address. Is it possible to use sub-domains for ftp site access? I know I am more than confused but no matter whatever and however you reply to me, you will help me have a more clear view on this subject. This far i've ran apt-get install nginx php5 php5-cgi and accessed the IP of the VPS with a browser which outputs It works, so it should be ready to run. Never having worked with nginx in the past, I have no idea on what to do next. How should I config my nginx install to run properly as a staging server in my LAN? Apparently, there's multiple configs for nginx including sites-default and nginx-default making me really confused.

• Getting chrome to distinguish between search engine query or URL entry?

  So I use the quick search engine thing on chrome a lot. I type "w superman" if I want to find the wikipedia article for superman and even "tfs 13323" if I want to find the work item in TFS. The only problem is that with Google's new auto complete thing, sometimes I'll type in tfs 13030 and I'll get taken to the google search page having searched for "tfs 13030". The only way I can get rid of this is to clear my browser history. I guess the problem with using search and url on both the same bar is it gets confused about whether ur searching or ur entering a url. Is there a way around this?

• apticron, apt-get dist-upgrade and aptitude

  I'm confused, on my debian server I've gotten the daily "updates available" message by apticron. I normally then just use aptitude to install the upgrades. Today I got a message which shows two upgrades. But they don't show up in aptitude. When I do a apt-get dist-upgrade they show up as "NEW" packages to be installed. aptitude dist-upgrade seems to ignore them. Can anyone explain to me why this is happening and how to get rid of the messages (It doesn't seem like I really need the new packages)

  Hi there, I have recently installed wordpress but i would like to configure extensionless URLs .. I am using IIS7 but on a shared server. I presume i cna add something to web.config file?? I am little bit confused, in IIS7 and asp.net mvc it is done via code... but in PHP i don't think it is .... so the only alternative is to use a re-write module but i can't as I am on a shared server and can't install ISAPI stuff.. so I was wondering if there is a way to do the mapping i.e. when going to testme it would actually load testme.php Any advise really appreciated Thanks

• verisign certificate into jboss server SSL

• sql and web encoding problem

  Guys, I've got an encoding problem I believe. I have upgraded from phpBB2 to phpBB3. The old databases were in latin1, the new ones have utf8 encoding. Already during the upgrade process some rows of the DB were only read partly into the new version, because of strange characters as it turned out. When I use PHP's mb_convert_encoding() function to convert those strings to UTF8 they end up e.g. as 0x0093, i.e. they must have been some kind of double quotes. Even after doing this conversion, they still show up as 0x0093 in the browser (the squares with 0093 in them when the browser does not know what to display). Can someone explain the problem here? I'm a little confused and afraid I don't see all the dependencies that need to work to have the correct encodings and the correct display thereof...

• Can I make Terminal.app open different profiles with shortcut like iTerm?

  I've been using iTerm for a while, but I switched back to Terminal.app in Snow Leopard due to the Visor plugin. Most of thing works pretty well after I switched to Terminal.app, except in iTerm, I can create different profiles and assign each profile with key shortcut. The advantage of this setup is that I can have non-transparency and transparency profile. If I need to look up a command on the background, I can start a transparency shell, and vice versa. I was thinking to use Mac built-in "Application shortcut" in System preference. Though, I realize in Terminal.app, the "New Window" and "New Tab" have the same profile names, so the Application shortcut is confused and I can't assign a shortcut to it... Any thought on how to change menu name on Terminal (or even better, any application?) Thanks for your help.

• Meinberg ntp for Windows - force more frequent updates?

  I have a Windows VM that has time drift problems, and left to its own devices will drift by minutes per day. I know there are issues with time on VMs, but I was hoping using the Meinberg NTP service would be successful. It works, generally, in that the time gets corrected in one big step about once every 70mins when it's at about 10mins offset. This has totally confused me as I thought NTP was meant to drift gently back towards the right time, and panic and die if the offset was more than 3 minutes. So (a) what is happening and (b) how do I make it update more regularly?

• How to configure Apache (sites-available vs httpd.conf)

  Hi, I'm brand new to Apache so this might be a stupid question. I've been trying to follow a few basic tutorials explaining how to get Apache up and running (on ubuntu, running on Amazon). I've mostly come up blank, because all the tutorials told me to configure httpd.conf (to add DocumentRoot, etc.). I've now stumbled across one tutorial that told me to add site configurations to the sites-available directory (under /etc/apache), and then symlink to it from sites-enabled. Configuring this way seems to work. But now I'm confused - how am I supposed to configure Apache? Most tutorials still seem to say that I should be using httpd.conf. Which one should I be using? What's the difference? Why are all the tutorials "wrong" (if they are)? Thanks!

• Django, wsgi, py. what's the difference?

  I'm trying to get a django application up and running on my cpanel system. I've installed mod_wsgi, and am following the guide here: http://www.nerdydork.com/setting-up-django-on-a-whm-cpanel-vps-liquidweb.html However, I'm now confused as I don't know what to do next. The application has .py files, and I am able to run it via this: python manage.py runserver 211.144.131.148:8000 However, that's via command line and binds to port 8000. I want to use Apache instead. The question is, that tutorial doesn't go further into how to get apache to recognize .py files and run the application as I want it. What do I do next?
