• remastersys created Live DVD hangs in "Choose a picture"

  I used remastersys to create a Live DVD. Then, I used the Live DVD for the installation on another computer. The installation hung at the "Choose a picture" session. Both the "Back" and "Continue" buttons were disabled. It seemed like the installation was hung. I had to power-cycle the computer and reinstall from the Live DVD again. After the power-cycle, the installation from the Live DVD went successfully. Any idea why the installation hung at the "Choose a picture" session, and how to fix it without power-cycle the computer?   I'm interested in the philosophical and architectural justification (or lack thereof) in using Java to develop in today's modern world (exclude mobile/embedded platforms of course). Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a back-end in Java? Why would one choose to develop (or not develop) a front-end UI in Java? Why do large enterprises lean towards developing in Java rather than adopt more modern (and standardized) technologies? *disclaimer: I'm not a fan of Java in the enterprise, I'm simply curious what drives enterprises to continue the trend.

• 1 to 1 Comparison and Ranking System

  I'm looking to create a comparison and ranking system which allows users to view 2 items, click on the one that they feel is the better one and then get presented with 2 more random items and continue to do this until they decide to stop. In the background, I want the system to use these wins and loses to rank each item in an overall ranking table so I can then see what is #1 and what isn't. I haven't got a clue where to begin with the formula, but I image I need to log wins and loses. Any help/direction appreciated!

• How to control / disable low level battery on bluetooth mouse

  I have a little problem with my Kesington Bluetooth Mouse on Ubuntu 12.10. Ubuntu 12.10 considers my bluetooth mouse battery as a system battery as if it was the main laptop battery (so I have two on the battery indicator, the main and the bluetooth one). When it runs low level, near to die, battery, my laptop acts as if it was the main battery and I must quickly stop bluetooth and continue on the touchpad if I want to work. Can anyone help me? Maybe I prefer to disable the battery control over the mouse, I don't care about it, I know it is fully charged, but Ubuntu always starts on 33% or less, I just want to work with it and when it will be battery-off I will recharge the batteries. • window title bar and controls (minimize, maximize and close) don't work sometimes

  I am using Ubuntu 11.10. Sometimes the window controls don't work. If I click on any of the icons on top-right or top-left they just become colorless and fade away, as though that are not present. The window has not frozen, as I can click inside the window and continue to work with it. The moment I click inside the window the titlebar controls regain their color, but when I click them again, they fade and bcm colorless. As a result, I cannot close, minimize or maximize. This is not a continuous problem, but happens very frequently.

  The CTO called to inform me of a new project and in the process told me that my code is weird. He explained that my colleagues find it difficult to understand due to the overly complex, often new concepts and technologies used, which they are not familiar with. He asked me to maintain a simple code base and to think of the others that will inherit my changes. I've put considerable time into mastering LINQ and thread-safe coding. However, others don't seem to care nor are impressed by anything other than their paycheck. Do I have to keep it simple (stupid), just because others are not familiar with best practices and efficient coding? Or should I continue to do what I find best and write code my way?

  Question: Is there an open source license that requires that my name (or a name that I want to promote) will always be associated with a project and derivations of it? (Either within the copyright notice (©) or other.) Motivation: - My main motivation is to gain reputation. If it gained wide use, it could look very good on resume (I understand this is a long shot). - An additional benefit is that it would explicitly state to prospective employers that this code was used by myself before I started with the company and will continue to be used when I leave. It is my understanding: I am aware that 99.9% of open-source projects never take off, and that I am taking a long shot in regard to advancing reputation/career. I understand that many don't read/respect licenses. I understand that open source projects take a lot of time to manage. I understand that 'Concensus-Based Development' is the best chance at motivating a community and that I may/will loose substantial control.

• Which VCS is more applicable for our workflow?

  Currently we have code stored on a shared network drive and do not use any kind of VCS. The code stored on our shared network drive is always being backed up. We would like to keep things as close to they are now as possible, while using some kind of VCS software. I am envisioning a centralized workflow with each developer having a local copy of the code on his/her machine. We don't do any branching or working offline. Typically when we spin off a new version we would just copy the current working directory to a new directory. I believe we would continue doing this and just create a repository for the new version. I would rather not get into an argument over which VCS is better, just hoping to get some opinions for which is best suited and most applicable for what we are trying to do.

• XUbuntu won't boot

  I can't properly boot my XUbuntu desktop. It just hangs on the console without any visible errors. The only way i can boot it properly is choosing "recovery mode" in GRUB and then selecting "continue booting" in recovery menu. It's really annoying.   Ubuntu MAAS, very cool, awesome in fact, looks like a unique tool for several jobs. It looks free, but part of its documentation starts already with clauses that would scare anyone with interest in it: Documentation is copy righted by Canonical; Documentation must be used only for non-commercial purposes; If documentation is distributed within the non-commercial clause you must retain copyright; It just sounds a lot for a guide on how to install MAAS + Juju + Openstack and that scares me a bit. Under what license is Ubuntu MAAS distributed and what would be the reasoning for being so worried about copyrighting a guide like that so heavily? Is Ubuntu MAAS free? Will it continue like that?

• Desktop sharing options for Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity

  I would like to be able to access my office Ubuntu 12.04 machine from home, from a Mac Mini with Mac OSX. I have a VPN and I am able to access my office machine over SSH, so connectivity is not a problem. I browsed other questions, and it seems that there are several options: VNC XRDP FreeNX (haven't heard this one before) Are there any other? I have been using Remote Desktop on Windows before, and I actually like it. Not sure how well is XRDP implemented. I also used VNC several years back, and I didn't like its performance back then - not sure if things have changed since then. As I said above, the machine I want to access is running Ubuntu 12.04, with Unity. And I am using Unity by choice - I really like it and would like to continue using it :) The client computer is running Mac OSX (Snow Leopard). Based on your previous experience what is the best setup for this environment?

• Reasonable size for "filesystem reserved blocks" for non-OS disks?

  When creating a file system ( mkfs ...) the file system reserves 5% of the space for its own use because, according to man tune2fs: Reserving some number of filesystem blocks for use by privileged processes is done to avoid filesystem fragmentation, and to allow system daemons, such as syslogd(8), to continue to function correctly after non-privileged processes are prevented from writing to the filesystem. But with large drives 5% is quite a lot of space. I have 4x1.5 TB drives for data storage (the OS runs on a separate disk), so the default setting would reserve 300 GB, which is an order of magnitude more than the the entire OS drive. The reserved space can be tweaked, but what is a reasonable size for a data disk? Can I set it to zero, or could that lead to issues with fragmentation?

• HP 6735s Brightness hotkey problem; where is brightness panel?

  I have installed ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop hp 6735s. The screen is often too dark and i want to make it brighter, although the hotkeys Fn+F7/F8 are not working. I have tried some things: Firstly it appears that sometimes they are in fact working, after reboot they either work and continue to do so or they don't. I've read about a brightness applet; but where can i find or install it? I have tried some grub options; acpi_osi=Linux and acpi_backlight=vendor but nothing changes. I don't want to add another question but since it might be related: my laptop also gets quite hot, i'm having doubts whether ubuntu connects to the available sensors and cooling plans (or how does it work???); sensors (or psensor) only shows 2 sensors both named temp1. Any help is greatly appreciated! Paul

• What is a good network for full-page rich ads?

  I'm currently developing a website where users will be able to upload content. I would like to be able to show a full-page ad whenever someone tries to view the content. The ad should take up most of the screen, and I should be able to have a "continue to the content --" link at the top. Preferably, I want something like what is currently on Forbes (if you haven't seen it, here: http://www.forbes.com/fdc/welcome.shtml but with an ad in the black area). • New to iPhone Development - iOS5 Storyboard

  I'm new here and pretty new to iOS development. My question is basically, should I learn the old school development methods or just learn how to do things using the latest tools (i.e. Storyboard)? I've had a go with the Storyboard feature of XCode 4.2 and it's very powerful. My only concern is that it requires iOS 5. I don't mind learning the old way of doing things but I've been having trouble finding tutorials/examples for XCode 4.2 that don't use the storyboard. An example would be the with my trouble finding a good tutorial on how to embed a Navigation Controller into a TabBarController. A lot of the material out there seems to be for older version of XCode. Using the storyboard I'm able to set this up with seconds but still haven't managed to get it working without it. So in short :) would you guys suggest I continue my project using the Storyboard or make the extra effort to do things a little more manually?

• How do I get the Netgear N150 USB wifi adapter working on 12.04?

  Just installed latest version of ubuntu. I'm using a Netgear N150 Wireless USB Micro Adapter WNA1000M which keeps asking for network password over and over. I read elsewhere that I needed to install the latest driver for my chipset (RTL8188CUS) which I have and still no joy. If I run the steps listed in this thread while connected through ethernet, the wireless will connect just fine. If I disconnect the ethernet, the wifi will even continue to work, but after a restart or two I will lose connection. If I repeat the steps listed in the aforementioned thread, it will not re-connect wifi unless I run those steps while connected to ethernet.......so strange...

• Alternative to "inheritance versus composition?" [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Where does this concept of “favor composition over inheritance” come from? I have colleagues at work who claim that "Inheritance is an anti-pattern" and want to use composition systematically instead, except in (rare, according to them) cases where inheritance is really the best way to go. I want to suggest an alternative where we continue using inheritance, but it is strictly forbidden (enforced by code reviews) to use anything but public members of base classes in derived classes. For a case where we don't need to swap components of a class at runtime (static inheritance), would that be equivalent enough to composition? Or am I forgetting some other important aspect of composition?

• New file in ubuntu kernel ppa repository to install?

  Googling this question hasn't brought me to anything so I decided to ask here. Recently I noticed on kernel.org that kernel 3.7 finally considered to be a stable so I decided to upgrade, since I am on 3.7 RC7 but when I opened http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7.1-raring/ I noticed new file (actually 2 which seems to be identical) linux-headers-3.7.1-030701-omap_3.7.1-030701.201212171620_armhf.deb and linux-image-3.7.1-030701-omap_3.7.1-030701.201212171620_armhf.deb so my question is should I install those as well or continue installing only 4 files (e.g. 3 AMD64 image and headers + all headers)? Thank you.

I've been hearing a lot of talk surrounding the Appcelerator Titanium framework lately, but I'm not sure I fully understand it's purpose. As I understand it, it's a framework for building native mobile apps using web technologies. If I don't have any web dev skills, are there any ways that using Appcelerator Titanium would benefit me? • Ubuntu Installer offers to show differences, then doesn-t

  When I was installing updates under 12.04 LTS today, the ubuntu installer warned that there were differences between the local copy of smb.conf and that in the installer package. It offered me a drop/down list of options. I chose one which reads something like "show differences side by side" and clicked the only available button (other than help, I think it was labelled continue) The installer then proceeded with updates and asked for a reboot. Even after rebooting, no comparison was shown. How can I find out now whether I still have my previous smb.conf or the one from the installer, and what the differences are?
