• Switching to workspaces view shows buggy blue background

  When switching to workspaces view everything the background turns blue. Same happens when I switch between multiple windows of the same app too. Happening after having a try with gnome shell out of curiosity. Installed through official repos like normal. Tried it out but switched back, anyone have an idea of why this is happening? Got an Intel GPU and Unity 3d. If anyone can give me some direction, thanks a lot. Apparently it's not that hard to accidentally install an nvidia driver. All I had to do was remove all the stuff that had nvidia in it and I got 3d back! For anyone else, this is how I found out: check out Xorg.0.log `$ cat / var/log/Xorg.0.log | more` if you see a line like this somewhere `(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)` you got an nvidia problem Thanks everyone for trying to help :D

• The 2012 JAX Innovation Awards

  A new article, now up on otn/java, titled “The 2012 JAX Innovation Awards” reports on  important Java developments celebrated by the Awards, which were announced in July of 2012. The Awards, given by S&S Media Group, aim to, "Reward those technologies, companies, organizations and individuals that make outstanding contributions to Java." The Awards fall into three categories: Most Innovative Java Technology, Most Innovative Java Company, and Top Java Ambassador. In addition, a finalist who did not win an award receives a Special Jury prize, "in acknowledgement of their unique contribution and positive impact on the Java ecosystem."The winners were: JetBrains for Most Innovative Java Company; Adam Bien as Top Java Ambassador; Restructure 101, created by Headway Software, as Most Innovative Technology; and Charles Nutter, Special Jury award. • Using the Java SE 8 Date Time API with JPA 2.1

  Most of you are hopefully aware of the new Date Time API included in Java SE 8. If you are not, you should check them out right now using the Java Tutorial Trail dedicated to the topic. It is a significantly leap forward in processing temporal data in Java. For those who already use Joda-Time the changes will look very familiar - very simplistically speaking the Java SE 8 feature is basically Joda-Time standardized. Quite naturally you will likely want to use the new Date Time APIs in your JPA domain model to better represent temporal data. The problem is that JPA 2.1 will not support the new API out of the box. So what are you to do? Fortunately you can make use of fairly simple JPA 2.1 Type Converters to use the Date Time API in your JPA domain classes. Steven Gertiser shows you how to do it in an extremely well written blog entry. Besides explaining the problem and the solution the entry is actually very good for getting a better understanding of JPA 2.1 Type Converters as well. I think such a set of converters may be a good fit for Apache DeltaSpike as a Java EE 7 extension? In case you are wondering about Java SE 8 support in the JPA specification itself, Nick Williams has already entered an excellent, well researched JIRA entry asking for such support in a future version of the JPA specification that's well worth looking at. Another possibility of course is for JPA providers to start supporting the Date Time API natively before anything is formalized in the specification. What do you think?

• Groovy JUnit test support

  Good news everyone! I've implemented support for the Groovy JUnit tests which basically means you can finally use Groovy in the area where is so highly productive! You can create a new Groovy JUnit test in the New File/Groovy/Groovy JUnit test and it should behave in the same way as for Java tests. Which means if there is no JUnit setup in your project yet, you can choose between JUnit 3 and JUnit 4 template and with respect to your choice the project settings will be changed (in case of the Maven based projects the correct dependencies and plugins are added to the pom.xml and in case of the Ant based project the JUnit dependency is configured). Or if the project is already configured, the correct template will be used. After that the test skeleton is created and you can write your own code and of course run the tests together with the java ones. Some of you were asking for this feature and of course I don't expect it will be perfect from the beginning so I would be really glad to see some constructive feedback about what could be improved and/or redesigned ;] ..at the end I have to say that the feature is not active for the Ant based Java EE projects yet (I'm aware of it and it will be fixed to the NetBeans 7.3 final - actually it will be done in a few days/weeks, just want you to know). But it's already complete in all types of the Maven based projects and also for the Ant based J2SE projects. And as always, the daily build where you can try the feature can be downloaded right here, so don't hesitate to try it!

• Should I learn the easier framework as a start? [closed]

  I've been a programmer for 2 years. I learned Java SE, C from college and learned Cobol from the workplace. I've noticed that there is a hype about framework and I actually don't know what is a framework. It is so cool that my colleague once said you cannot find a new job without knowing something like struct spring hibernate. And we should know Java EE too because it was aimed for enterprise application. I've never code something such as server-client web application, and I think I need to try it out. But which language should I code in? I can't decide between the following 2: 1) Java. It is heavily used by many company so I could easily reuse the experience gained. But Java and its related framework are pretty heavy (for the machine and operation). It is on-demand. 2) ROR. It is cool. The syntax of ruby is simple. I can get a better hand on it. And maybe I can learn the concept easily and possibly correctly. However, not much company here would use it. All the job ads are about J2EE/C#. Should I learn the easy one or the difficult one? Not to mention there are a lot of frameworks out there for Java, which makes the decision much more difficult.

• wireless blocked after installing ubuntu 12.04

  I am using a lenovo S10-3 ideapad; had no problems with earlier version of ubuntu, only since installing 12.04. Have looked through many of the questions on the same issue and tried potential solutions but cannot seem to solve my problem. The hardware switch is in 'on' position and the wireless light comes on very briefly (2-3 sec) when the laptop starts up but then goes off and stays off. Pressing FN+F5 does nothing at all. I'd be grateful for any assistance. • New Horizon

  I have resigned from Oracle and thus will soon leave the GlassFish group. I feel very proud looking back at what we've achieved as a team with GlassFish in the past few years, including those past two years at Oracle. If you know anything about the history of application servers at Sun, you'll recognize that building such a community around GlassFish and its amazing number of downloads is nothing short of a small miracle. The Java EE platform has also seen a strong resurgence, bringing it back to the forefront of effective enterprise Java development in many ways. Having been hired by Sun some 13 years ago to sell NetDynamics I certainly feel that I leave the company's application server in *much* better shape. Oracle has ambitious plans for GlassFish and has been in my opinion a good steward for this community. I see no reason for this to change and I do expect the community to keep on pushing Oracle to get even better with time. This ride has been intense and the people I've met and worked with, both inside and outside Sun/Oracle, have made the experience the best one of my career. • How to get Nvidia graphics working on Sony Z laptop?

  I have an older Sony VAIO Z 590 laptop with switchable graphics between Intel and Nvidia GeForce 9300M. It is NOT Optimus. I did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04. Everything works, but it's using Unity 2D with the Intel drivers. I've tried loading the Nvidia drivers from "Additional Drivers", but it says "this driver is activated but not currently in use". When I run "nvidia-settings", an error window pops up to say "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X drivers." "lspci" shows both graphics cards. Let me know if I should add more info. How do I get the Nvidia graphics and Unity 3D working? • Why can't WARs share session info?

  I have seen several developers looking for a solution for this problem: accessing session information from a different WAR (even when inside the same EAR) - here are some samples: Any way to share session state between different applications in tomcat?, Access session of another web application, different WAR files, shared resources, Tomcat: How to share data between two applications?, What does the crossContext attribute do in Tomcat? Does it enable session sharing? and so on... From all I have searched, there are some specific solutions depending on the container, but it is somehow 'contrary to the specification'. I have also looked through Java EE specification without any luck on finding an answer. Some developers talk about coupling between web applications, but I tend to disagree. What is the reason one would keep WARs inside the same EAR if not coupling? EJBs, for instance, can be accessed locally (even if inside another EJB JAR within the same EAR). More specifically, one of my WARs handles authentication and authorization, and I would like to share this information with other WARs (in the same EAR). I have managed to work around similar problems before by packaging WARs as JARs and putting them into a singular WAR project (WEB-INF/lib). Yet I do not like this solution (it requires a huge effort on servlet naming and so on). And no solution has answered the first (and most important) question: Why can't WARs share session information?

  This is Ms Kahina, I’m getting started with jBPM & Java EE, I tried to install the jBPM 5.4 version by following all the steps stated in the iBPM user guide as below: 1- I’ve installed Java (JDK 1.7) and ant ( Apache-ant-1.9.4). 2- I’ve set both JAVA_HOME and ANT_HOME environement variables. 3- I’ve downloaded the jBPM 5.4 full installer and run the installation script “ant install.demo” and after that the start script “ant start.demo”. But unfortunately jBPM 5.4 is not working. When running the installation Script I’m getting successful message but with the following warnings : [copy] Warning: Could not find file C:\jbpm-installer\db\task-persistence.xml to copy. [copy] Warning: Could not find file C:\jbpm-installer\db\Taskorm.xml to copy. The start demo was successful. Actually when I try to open any tool provided with the jBPM such us the jBPM-console for example I’m getting the following messages: Address not found or sometimes the http status 404 occurred even if the Welcome page of jBoss AS was opened at http://localhost:8080/. Please need your assistance to sort out this issue in order to move forward in my project as I'm blocked in the installation stage since more than a week now, I don’t know if this is related to the jBoss AS7 or to any other thing that I didn’t find out. • Test JPQL with NetBeans IDE 7.3 Tools

  Since I pretty much messed up this part of the "Unlocking Java EE 6 Platform" demo, which I did together with PrimeFaces lead Çagatay Çivici during JavaOne 2012, I feel obliged to blog about it to clarify what should have happened! In my own defense, I only learned about this feature 15 minutes before the session started. In 7.3 Beta, it works for Java SE projects, while for Maven-based web projects, you need a post 7.3 Beta build, which is what I set up for my demo right before it started. Then I saw that the feature was there, without actually trying it out, which resulted in that part of the demo being a bit messy. And thanks to whoever it was in the audience who shouted out how to use it correctly! Screenshots below show everything related to this new feature, available from 7.3 onwards, which means you can try out your JPQL queries right within the IDE, without deploying the application (you only need to build it since the queries are run on the compiled classes): SQL view: Result view for the above: Here, you see the result of a more specific query, i.e., check that a record with a specific name value is present in the database: Also note that there is code completion within the editor part of the dialog above. I.e., as you press Ctrl-Space, you'll see context-sensitive suggestions for filling out the query. All this is pretty cool stuff! Saves time because now there's no need to deploy the app to check the database connection.

• Why is heap size fixed on JVMs?

  Can anyone explain to me why JVMs (I didn't check too many, but I've never seen one that didn't do it that way) need to run on a fixed heap size? I know it's easier to implement on a simple contiguous heap, but the Sun JVM is now over a decade old, so I'd expect them to have had time to improve this. Needing to define the maximum memory size of your program at startup time seems such a 1960s thing to do, and then there are the bad interactions with OS virtual memory management (GC retrieving swapped out data, inability to determine how much memory the Java process is really using from the OS side, huge amounts of VM space wasted (I know, you don't care on your fancy 48bit machines...)). I also guess that the various sad attempts to build small operating systems inside the JVM (EE application servers, OSGi) are at least partially to blame on this circumstance, because running multiple Java processes on a system invariably leads to wasted resources because you have to give each of them the memory it might have to use at peak. Surprisingly, Google didn't yield the storms of outrage over this that I would expect, but they may just have been buried under the millions of people finding out about fixed heap size and just accepting it for a fact.
