• How to diagnose a Windows XP hard crash

  I have a 64-bit Windows XP machine which has hard crashed several times today. The symptoms are that the screen just goes blank, then the reboot cycle starts. There is no blue screen and even though it is switched on, no crash dump file is created. On all occasions it has happened during a period of high CPU/memory activity. I have run a full Dell diagnostics with no failures. Any ideas how to track this down further? Thanks.

• Having problems with Grub2 booting Ubuntu from my External Hard Drive

  I installed Ubuntu on my external hard drive but it won't boot on my laptop. what do i do? i did some reading and traced the source of the problem to grub2. Apparently, grub2 doesn't use the device's UUID, and uses the linux directory instead (/dev/sdf2). This means that whenever i plug my E-HDD into a system that has a different number of drives connected to it, i won't be able to boot without editting the boot command. I don't understand it too well but that's what i got from what i read. Is there anyway to fix this?

• Hard Drive upgrade advice for a Dell PowerEdge 1950

  My setup is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with 2x 140Gb Hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration. The OS is Windows 2003 Web Edition and disk is partitioned into to two, a 12Gb C: partition and the remainder is the D: drive. Both are very close to full capacity. Ideally I want to replace those drives with 2x 1Tb drives while retaining all data. First of all is this possible without rebuilding the server? If so, will I need any 3rd party software, Symantec Ghost, Partition Master for e.g., to do this? Any general advice as to how to go about doing this?

• I get a consistency y error when I use my second hard drive

  I have two hard drives with win8 installed to both of them. Sometimes, when I boot from the second one (with F12 boot-menu and the second drive selection) and later reboot and start my PC from the first one, I get a disk error for a consistency problem. Windows ask for a disk check and after that, I can't anymore boot from the second drive or have access to it. Why this happens and how can I prevent it? What options do I have except from reinstalling windows? Thanks Stavros

• Data transfer speed to USB storage connected to wifi router very slow

  Here is my setup. A Linksys Cisco E3200 wifi router. A MacbookPro running OS X Lion 10.7.4. A Seagate GoFlex 1TB hard drive connected to wifi router via the USB port. When I try to transfer data from my MBP to the HDD, the data transfer rate is very low. I'm getting around 3MB/s write speed. This is very slow compared to the speed I get when HDD is directly connected to the MBP. The HDD is NTFS formatted. And the router provides access to HDD using Samba share. So I connect to the HDD using smb://. What is the limiting factor here affecting the data transfer rate?

• Updating windows xp hard drive controller from ubuntu live disk

  The problem: When booting, I get a blue screen shortly after the Windows XP logo splash screen. The error code is 7b, and the second hex number is 0xC0000034. Based on this link (item 7) it appears the driver should be updated. Oddly, I made no changes to the drivers recently. I suspect it was something in a windows update or the newest upgrade of my antivirus (eset). But I digress. The BSOD makes me unable to boot into Windows at all, so I can't update the driver from there. I've run various bios-level diagnostics (including full surface scan) and the hd looks good. I'm also able to boot to an old ubuntu disk and read files from the hd. The question: Based on the above, it appears that I need to update the Windows hard drive controller from the ubuntu live disk. How do I do that?

• Not able to safely remove external disk after having mounted and unmounted a VHD on it

  I am using Windows 7 SP 1. I have an external hard disk (Seagate 500GB) which I am able to use without problems most of the time. I am able to plug it in, use it and then safely unmount it via the "Eject USB Mass Storage Device" option in the taskbar tray. However, if I attach a VHD file located on this disk using "Disk Management", then detach the VHD and finally try to safely disconnect the disk via the system tray, I get an error which says: "Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device: Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it. Close any programs that might be using the device, and then try again later." How do I avoid this problem? Which process could still be accessing the device (even after I have closed the "Disk Management" application) ?

• Computer temporarily freezes and then resumes

  This happens on ALL operating systems (7, Ubuntu, etc.). What happens is everything for 1-3 seconds becomes unresponsive, I then hear what sounds like my other internal hard drive 'spinning up', and then viola everything is responsive again. Note: Already ran SMART tests, no issues at all. I think issue is that the HDD spins down and when need it gets 'turned-on' (OS settings turn off HDD's after 20 mins of inactivity) and because my pagefile is on the other HDD it causes OS to temporarily freeze.   OK, so this is really weird. I ran HDTune on a newly set-up home-built computer and got the following readings from my drives in mid-November. SSD 154 MB/s RAID1 87 RAID0 198 (software installs) RAID0 98 Swap drive Today, in January, I run HDTune (same version) and get these results, in MB/s: SSD 186 RAID1 98 RAID0 241 RAID0 98 (Swap drive) Here are more details that HDTune reports on the SSD drive: HD Tune: OCZ-VERTEX Benchmark Blockquote Transfer Rate Minimum : 135.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Maximum : 219.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Average : 185.7 MB/sec Access Time : 0.1 ms Burst Rate : 187.3 MB/sec CPU Usage : -1.0% To get to my question: Why are my hard drives improving in performance? Most of my logical drives are in some form of RAID, except for the SSD. Will this performance ever deteriorate? Note, none of my drives are a hybrid drive that uses some form of SSD to enhance the write/reads on actual platters.

  I have a 2010 MBP with the 7200 rpm hard drive. I was copying a 2.1GB file, and noticed read/write speeds of around 20MB/s. Is that reasonable? Seems slow to me.... What is the proper way to benchmark a HD on OS X? Googling I see xbench, but that hasn't been updated in years. I also see some guides for using the command line. The goal would be to benchmark my drive and then compare the results to some official scores that the drive should be getting.

  I can access the server in safe mode. I have a Proliant 360 Hp server with Windows server 2003 R2. The event viewer is completely filled up with this error: the driver detected a controller error on Device\Harddisk3\DR3 I individuated the drive affected. It is drive H that is a secondary non mirrored drive. When I access anything on that drive I receive: "the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" What should I do? Is this just a driver issue or a hard drive failure? Please give me a quick help as my websites are offline due to this. Any suggestion is welcome!

  I am trying to install CentOS 6.3 on new server that has 2xSSD and 1xHDD drives connected to mainboard's SATA ports by following order: SSD1 -> SATA1 SSD2 -> SATA2 HDD1 -> SATA3 On the installation process CentOS shows me hard drives by this order: /sda -> that is actually SSD2 /sdb -> HDD1 /sdc -> SSD1 It looks like CentOS assigns it randomly rather by the SATA connection order. My question is: What the order of drives /sd* depending on? And how can I change it to be by the order it connected to SATA? Thank you in advance!

  I'm posting for a friend of mine. She bought a WD MyPassport Essential SE 1 TB Hard drive the other day. When she plugged in the USB in her lap top, the driver cannot be recognized by the smart ware software. While she was doing a back up of her files, McAfee was running in the background. Since the backup was taking so long to finish, she decided to pause it. She tried to delete the partially backed up files, but instead, she accidentally deleted the entire file in the folder including the pre-installed software. Now, when she tries to start up the MyPassport, the smart ware doesn't show up anymore. Can someone please give us advice what can she do about this? Thank you.

  I have shut down my computer two hours ago. When I open my computer it started restarting itself after showing the POST screen. I can open my computer with a Ubuntu Live CD or Windows installation CD. I can also open and boot my computer with my second drive, so I think something is wrong with my primary hard drive. Do you have any idea what the problem might be and how can I fix it? I am using an HP DV9087EA laptop and my primary disk is a WD500GB. I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 on my drive.

• Use Windows 7 offline sync with external usb hd

  Yeah, truly the whole question in the header. Is there a way to use Windows 7 offline sync (which we know from network mapped drives) with a external usb hd? When not, are there similar built in tools or good third party tools? My scenario: I want to buy a ultrabook with SSD which is mostly limited in space. So I'm going to put all files to a external HD and only store current projects on the local SSD. Let's say I have to change project. It would be easy just change sync folders and have the second project synced to my hd too. With network mapped drives it's such easy. Paths do not differ if the drive is offline so in most situations you don't take notice if the folder is offline. And you only have to activate offline file for the folders you courrently need for work. So is there a similar solution for usb hard drives?

• Easiest way to move my Windows installation to an SSD?

  I've taken the plunge and bought an SSD and want to move my existing Windows installation over. The current hard disk is 500Gb, but I've trimmed the contents down to about ~40Gb. I'm transferring it across to a 100Gb SSD and looking for the easiest way just to copy everything across and set the SSD up as a boot device. I've looked at a few tools like Macrium Reflect, but they don't seem able to restore to a smaller drive. Do I need to go for something like PING to do this? I'm trying to avoid scary Linux-based boot utilities if possible, does anyone know of an easier way?

• Sudden slow read & write speed on all IO

  I have a custom built rig that has 2 storage drives. for OS: Western Digital 1.0TB HARD DR 64MB for other stuff: Corsair Performance 3 128GB (SSD) [ expected read speed: 400 mb/s ] The system was incredibly fast for a couple of months, then one day i was playing a game then it started to get buggy (some sounds and objects disappearing), i stopped the game and the system seemed to be unstable so i had to shut it down, next morning i couldn't start it up, it was saying something about corrupt device. I formatted both disks and installed a fresh copy of windows, all i can say that since that day the system was never like before, it takes 10 minutes to boot up (the icons and desktop slowly appear). but once it's done the slowness isn't as noticeable. Here's my benchmark on the HDD ( read speed - write speed ): And the SSD: Anyone knows what could be the issue?

• Different versions of 2.5" drives? Unscreawing Intel 320 for slimmer drive to fit newer thinkpads?

  My x60s laptops come with about 1-2mm heigher 2.5" HDD than newer x220 models. This is totally stupid when one would like to reuse the old drive in the newer laptops. I bought newer 2.5" 320 Intel SSDs and they seem to have such 1-2mm gap to unscrew but I am unsure whether it is meant for opening. Could someone instruct what to do here? Look the manufacturer has started changing the old good 2.5" drives into slightly different versions, now it means slow compability issues to fix or totally new 2.5" drives. Ideas how to proceed? Unscrewing newer 320 drives or are some other versions of 2.5" drives meant for x220? Does there exist some sort of racks to get drives working between different comps? Perhaps booting from laplink is currently the easiest solution to get things working when changing harddrives between comps?   When I install Windows 7 on my hard drive, it makes three partitions. One with the OS itself, one with bootmgr inside (that is 100 MiB), and one with the factory image (all the crapware from HP). My final goal is to have the OS on a partition of 100 GiB and keep the rest (900 GiB) for storage. I thought it would be easy using gparted, but it is taking so long. It will take hours. There must a way to partition the drive before installing Windows. Yeah, because what I think makes the shrinking/moving of the partitions take so long is because they are not empty (am I wrong?).

• VirtualBox: Grub sees hard drive, Linux does not

  I installed Linux on my second hard drive. I can boot to it just fine. But when I try to boot it from a Windows 7 host using http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#rawdisk, grub sees it and can load vmlinuz and initramfs. Log: :: running early hook [udev] :: running hook [udev] :: Triggering uevents... :: running hook [plymouth] :: Loading plymouth...done. ... Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/{root UUID} ... ERROR: device 'UUID={root UUID}' not found. Skipping fsck. ERROR: Unable to find root device 'UUID={root UUID}' It then drops me into a recovery shell. I checked "/etc/fstab" and it's empty, there are also no sd* devices in dev, the only thing in /dev/disk/by-id is a VBox CD device. I'm not too good with these kinds of things so help would be greatly appriciated.

• Netbeans hard freezes Windows XP, how to debug

  I get this problem about once to twice a day while editing in netbeans. I will be editing some code in Netbeans and I get a hard freeze requiring a full reboot. There hasn't been any correlation with an actual event that I can tell. Sometimes it's when I focus, sometimes while typing, sometimes while clicking on another window. I need to figure out how to track down what's causing the problem, as no error is generated when this happens. No error in Netbeans logs or Windows logs. I've also tried letting it sit to see if it recovers, and it's definitely stuck. I haven't had any problems with other apps running JRE, so I'm thinking it's Netbeans itself. I can't submit a bug report because I can't get a log or any reproduce-able explanation of the problem.

• Linux cannot alter partition table of main hard disk of my laptop

  I run openSUSE 12.2 on my ASUS N76VZ laptop. My problem is that I cannot alter the partition table of first hard disk /dev/sda1. YaST partitioner says it's unreadable, but actually it can read it but not alter it. It doesn't tell me anything else, except that I can wipe the partition table (having to reinstall Windows for the third time). Since I want to create new partitions on that disk, how do I fix the partition table layout? I could create new partition from Windows Computer Management and format them in Linux. I could do this, but it doesn't explain the problem

• Zeroing SSD drives

  We host VPSes for customers. Each customer VPS is given an LVM LV on a standard spindle hard disk. If the customer were to leave, we zero out this LV ensuring that their data does not leak over to another customers. We are thinking of going with SSDs for our hosting business. Given that SSDs have the "wear levelling" technology, does that make zeroing pointless? Does this make this SSD idea unfeasable, given we can't allow customer data to leak over to another customer? • Broken screen on laptop?

  I recently damaged the screen on my HP Notebook...now my main concern is that I have Roboform installed and on my taskbar. The trouble is, because the screen is totaled, I can't see anything, and I discovered, to my horror, that I haven't backed any of the IDs and passwords up to a text document. Of course, I cannot access any of my content that hosts an ID name and password at all unless I can access Roboform that is installed on the notebook! Now hopefully I have ordered a SATA/USB cable to access the hard drive that I now removed form the notebook will I be able to access roboform that way and ALL the log-in details?
