  I have a project with a 2TB database ( 450.000.000 rows). I need to provide to the proyect a solution that gives FailOver and load Balacing, what do you recommend? We are going to use a NetApp Filer for the Data Files and for the File System of the Proyect. I read that SQl Clustering does not provide load balacing. If I cannnot have this feature and I have to go only to the FailOver what Server ( I presume that the key feature here is memory) would you recomend. We are adding 1.000.000 rows a day. Once the rows is inserted we are doing a lot of updates to that row for about 1 week then the row get static. Because of this I am thinking in some kind of history table or database or something like that. I am open to the Os servers implementation, I was thinking of a windows 2008 server with cluster but this depend of the database solution

• Server 2008 Web Edition IIS6 SMTP conflict

  I'm using IIS6 Manager to setup the SMTP service on Windows Server 2008 Web Edition. There seems to be a conflict (port 25?) which means that I cannot start and stop the Default SMTP server within IIS6. I can start and stop it with the services.msc snap in and this is reflected in state of the SMTP server in IIS6 manager. I'm worried that none of the settings I want to get at within IIS6 (logging, authentication etc..) are having any effect. None of these settings are available within IIS7 in Web Edition.

  One of the projects I'm working on is looking like we're going to need to migrate from CentOS 5.4 over to something else (we need to run Postgresql 8.3+, and CentOS/RHEL only support 8.1), and one of the options will be Windows Server. Since 2008 R2 is out that's what I'm looking at. I'll need to run Postgres and Tomcat and don't really require anything that Windows has like IIS (if I can run Server Core, even better!). The other kicker is it will be virtualized through VMWare ESXI 4.0 so that we have three separate boxes: development, Quality, and Production servers. From a licensing standpoint though, and I good enough with just the Web Server edition? Am I right in assuming that will be three licenses? Or should I just jump up to Enterprise so that I get 4 VM licenses?

I can see the following in "ipconfig /all": DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . . : ::1 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 and "Obtain dns server address automatically" option in network interface setting is disabled. I installed active directory once and uninstalled now, I think it's the reason. But I can't find any answer from google or bing how to fix.

  Hi, I am planning out a Hyper-V R2 Cluster environment. I was wondering if I went to the effort of deploying one of the few methods to network boot from iSCSI inside the guests, whether the legacy network adapter would switch to a synthetic after boot, or whether the connection could be handed to a synthetic network after boot? This is obviously for performance reasons. MS suggests that some emulated devices are capable of switching to synthetic with integration services after boot, but doesn't specifically list all which are capable.

  At the moment I am running a Windows Terminal Server 2008 for around 10 clients that use the server to run programs and access data. Is there anyway to separate the resources of each user so that they do not impact each other in terms of resources. User 1: Opens program User 2: Notices slow down I have looked into using Windows System Resource Manager but do not know if it provides what I need and if there are any other 3rd party tools that also provide this functionality. • Server 2008 blue screen after login - no desktop

  I came into work today to find that our Windows Server 2008 used as a terminal server for the Thin Clients was not loading the users desktops. What I have found out is that when I login via Remote Desktop, after applying user settings, it gets to the stage of 'Preaparing your desktop', but then the screen just goes blue. I have tried rebooting several times with no luck, and logging in locally at the server with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? I do not think that it could be a virus attack as we run antivirus on the server with OpenDNS filtering. Yesterday a software restriction policy was set up to only allow programs in the following directories to run if that could be the problem, although it was working fine all day yesterday. • Slight network lag on Small Business Server 2008 R2

  I recently upgraded a network from a SBS 2003 server to a SBS 2008 R2 Server. Both I and users have noticed a slight delay in network applications and browsing network drives on the new server. It is minor, maybe a second or two at most. However I am wondering if anyone knows of anyway to optimize the networking to service requests sooner to the workstations. The network is running a 1 gig network with some 100 meg devices (mainly network printers). All workstations are XP SP3 Network software runs out of a shared folder mapped as a network drive, no sql databases. Server is a Dell Poweredge T610 with plenty of ram, cpu power, and storage.

  Hi guys, I have a new domain: www.biografica.ro which was bought 3 months ago but never used still then. I've bought a server with Windows 2008 server instaWeb Server (IIS). I've added a new site in C:\inetpu\wwwroot directory and did the setting (assigned the default ip to www.biografica.ro host etc -i've did on IIS6 one year ago, so i think i know to set up it correctly)... The problem is that the default site created by IIS instalation is working, but mine is not. It is started but is says: This link appears to be broken in Chrome and "The webpage cannot be found" (in IE). Do you know guys what i;ve done wrong? As i know a domain takes time to propagate but i think locally it should work.. Please help...i've spent 3 hours and cannot find a way...:(

• Setting up Windows 2008 with VPN and NAT

  I have a Windows 2008 box set up with VPN, and that works quite well. NPS is used to validate the VPN clients, who are able to access the private address of the server, once connected. I can't for the life of me get NAT working for the VPN clients, though. I've added NAT as a routing protocol, and set the one on in the VPN address pool as private, and the other as public - but it still won't NAT connections when I add a route through the VPN server's IP on the client side (route add SomeInternetIp IpOfPrivateInterfaceOnServer). I know I can reach the server's private interface (which happens to be 10.2.2.1) with remote desktop client, so I can't think of any issues with the VPN.

  I've setup Windows 2008 R2 as print server. I have checked option Keep printed document option for all printers and it works fine. Users print their stuff and i can see what they are doing. Problem is everyone sees all documents that are getting printed which is not always the best idea. Is there a way to: Limit print jobs to be only seen by people who printed them and admins Limit print jobs to be only seen on server (from within Server Manager) and so print jobs dissapear when print job is done from user queue (but then admins are still able to see it and track what's printed and when for reporting purposes). Create some kind of access level list so that some people can see everything geting printed, some people see their print jobs and some people see nothing :-)

  I've bought myself a new server that I'm going to use for some various software developing projects. I have a simple question about Windows 2008 R2 x64 software raid. What if disk 1 fails? Will it automatically swap over to disk 2? And boot up on disk 2 after reboot? Or how do you handle this? Should I use some tools for monitoring my RAID 1? So if it fails or if there are any errors, I will receive an email. Do you know of a tool capable of this? Or can I do it by having a tool monitoring the event viewer? Finally, I'm looking for a tool to test the speed (read/write) of my harddrives, before and after introducing RAID 1. What's the best free tool out there?

• Windows 2008 R2: can't extend C drive, mystery partitions

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server running under VMware ESX 4.0.0. I have reallocated disk space to it in order to extend the C drive, but Disk Management has "Extend Volume" greyed out. DISKPART shows more partitions than Disk Management shows, including one after the volume I'm trying to extend, which would explain why Disk Management isn't allowing the extension. Disk Management shows: System Reserved / 100MB NTFS / Healthy (System) (C:) / 39.39 GB NTFS / Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump) 10.00 GB / Unallocated DISKPART shows: Partition 1 Dynamic Data 992 KB 31 KB Partition 2 Dynamic Data 100 MB 1024 KB Partition 3 Dynamic Data 39 GB 101 MB Partition 4 Dynamic Data 1024 KB 39 GB My question at this point is: what the heck are partitions 1 and 4, where did they come from, why doesn't Disk Management show them, and, most importantly, can I delete partition 4 in order to extend partition 3?

• Firebox Edge 11 and SBS 2008 VPN produces error 721

  My VPN has stopped working. I have sbs 2008 and have run the VPN wizard. I have opened the port 1723 on my firebox edge as it instructed me to do. It was working but I think that an upgrade of the firebox software to version 11 has affected it. The port is still open. When connecting I get to verifying username and password then I get Error 721. Not sure whats wrong here. can anyone help?

  We recently had to upgrade our servers from Win 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise. The upgrade method was DISM. After the upgrade, a lot of weird things started to happen. Though Windows says it's been properly activated, we lost 1) RDP settings (disappeared from the Remote Setting tab of Properties of My Computer) 2) The option to join a domain is grayed out 3) The server had to 2 physical processors 12 cores each. Now, task manager or windows sees only 1 processor (or only 12 cores) 4) the amount of physical ram on this sever is 32 GB (Windows reports only 4 GB are usable) Has anyone encountered this before ? • Table modifications while running db replication (MS SQL 2008)

  I'm running SQL Server 2008 Std with a database that is being published in a "Transactional Publication" to a single subscriber. We are unable to make any changes to the tables on the publisher without getting the "cannot modify table because it is published for replication". This seems odd because schema changes (or scripts run to do this) should be pushed to the subscriber. We currently have to drop the entire publication system to make table changes. What am I missing? There must be a way to update the publisher tables? thanks!

• Incorrect directory permissions with OpenSSH on Cygwin on Windows Server 2008 SP2

  I ran into a weird directory permission problem when logged in to a Win2008SP2 (not R2) server through SSH. When I open a local cygwin shell on the server, i can do this: myUser@myServer ~ $ cd /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/ myUser@myServer /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv $ cd config myUser@myServer /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/config $ I have no issues accessing the 'config' directory when using a local cygwin shell. 'myUser' has all necessary permissions to access the directory as well. In fact, 'myUser' is a local administrator on the machine. Listing the permissions of the config folder through the local cygwin shell shows the following output: 4 drwx------+ 1 SYSTEM SYSTEM 0 Aug 2 09:38 config But when I log into the server with a SSH client (in this case Putty), i run into the following problem: myUser@myServer ~ $ cd /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/ myUser@myServer /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv $ cd config -bash: cd: config: Permission denied It also doesn't list the proper permissions through SSH: 0 drwxr-x--- 1 ???????? ???????? 0 Aug 2 09:38 config When I look at the running processes on the server with Task Manager (with a remote desktop connection), it shows that all bash.exe processes are running under the 'myUser' account, so I don't understand why I can't access that particular directory through SSH but have no problems accessing it in a local cygwin shell. I'm using OpenSSH 5.9p1-1. I'm not sure what the Cygwin version is... I used the latest setup.exe (version 2.738) of Cygwin, but I can't seem the find any other Cygwin-related version number. I doubt that it's related to SSH/Cygwin though, because when I connect from the Win2008SP2 server to my local Win7 machine through SSH (using the same OpenSSH/Cygwin versions) I can access the /cygdrive/c/Windows/System32/inetsrv/config folder without issues. Does anyone have an idea on what the issue could be?

• server 2008 sp2 hung not responding with kvm reset as well

  using server 2008 sp2 64bit os standard edition with all updates from ms site. server was hung this morning, resetting kvm did nothing, plugging in another usb mouse on the back did not let the mouse light up red on it's optic end. other machines on the kvm worked fine including the mouse. server is rack mounted 4u supermicro systems or superserver. had to hard power off and restart. any thoughts? i burnt this system in well for a couple of weeks before deploying so it is kind of odd that this happened. any help is greatly appreciated, or if anyone can suggest software to install that can maybe send out the email when something like that goes down. i looked for the minidump but nothing. nothing in the event viewers either. gd

  Hi, I have 3 Windows 2008 Standard servers in my system with no domain controller. Two of the servers are running a NLB cluster and the third server is a file server that the web servers connect to. I want to store my source code on the file server and point the IIS config to the network file share. The web sites also need access to a file share on the file server. I was able to share the network drive and access while logged into either of the web servers but my web apps are unable to access the file share - I assume due to permissions. • Restore SQL Server 2008 db without affecting users

  When I restore a db in Sql Server 2008 R2 from data on another server, it makes a mess of the users. I have a Windows User and MsSql Login named Web_SqlA on both machines. Before the Restore, Web_SqlA is properly mapped to the right Windows user in the database. After the Restore, Web_SqlA is still listed as a user for the db, but it's no longer tied to the Windows user, causing Trusted Connections to it to fail. How can I Restore the db without breaking this user each time? I see that this: Sql Server Database Restore And this: Sql Server Database Restore Address fixing these orphaned users after the fact; I'm looking to prevent overwriting the users during the Restore in the first place - everything else should be restored, but leave my users be. How can I go about that?

Two months ago, I purchased the final one but I don't know how to install/change to the new one. Windows 2008 IIS 7 Plesk 9.x The problem started when Level 2 of my hosting company adjusted a FTP users to have certain permissions....apparently he did this outside of plesk and it has been nothing but permission headaches all around. Connections....uploading files, etc. now somethings gone wrong where plesk isnt even loading properly and IIS too... But I have difficulties to set these IPs on my VMs because they are on different network. my current server ip is xxx.xxx.18.6 with MASK : 255.255.255.224 and the GW is xxx.xxx.18.1 my new ip stack is xxx.xxx.168.176/29 I can use RRAS to achieve this. Do I need to create another NIC? How do I make these VMs reachable from outside?

• Reporting Services 2008 R2 export to PDF embedded fonts not shown

  Hi, I have installed a font on the server that hosts Reporting Services 2008 R2, after that I've restarted the SSRS service, and sucessfully deployed a report with a custom font. I can see it using the font on the web, when I export it to Excel, however on PDF the font is not visible. If I click on File - Properties - Fonts. I'm presented with a screen that shows me a list of fonts on the PDF. There's an a icon with Helvetica-BoldOblique Type: Type 1 Encoding: Ansi Actual Font: Arial-BoldItalicMT Actual Font Type: TrueType The second one is a double T icon with the font I'm using and a (Embedded Subset) sufix. Its a True Type font and ANSI encoded. However the text is not using this embeded font, If I select the text and copy to a word document (I have the font installed) I can see the text in the font, however not on PDF, what's wrong here?
