  • Difference between VMWare tools?

    I'm currently writing a module for puppet which installs VMWare tools to virtual nodes. I want to do this via yum and and yum-repo. VMWare have their own repo (http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/3.5latest/rhel5/x86_64/index.html) which I thought I could use, rather than creating my own. But then I noticed that their repo files is alot different than the rpm file used when installing VMWare Tools on the node, via the "Install/upgrade VMWare Tools" in vSphere. Does anyone know what the real difference is? Does anyone have any preferences?

  • Remotely from Chrome or IE page loads ~60seconds, from Firefox or IE on local machine - instantly.

    The problem: If i access SharePoint from Windows 7 with IE8 or Chrome5 - I must wait for like a minute to get a response. If i use other Windows 7 with IE8, just the same - just wait a MINUTE. If i use Firefox3.6 on W7 machine - page opens up instantly. Now switch to IE rendering engine in Firefox, you will have to wait just as with IE. Now i tried IE8 on XP SP3 - page opens up instantly. I tried IE8 on Windows Server 2003 SP2 (machine on which SharePoint is hosted) - page opens up instantly. Nothing to see in Event Logs. The question Similar question has been asked but there is no response and i`m trying to access page without SSL and that happens even on GET requests. Where do I look? Where would be the problem? Browser? OS? I don't even know what to think about. Just a note Just a note about chrome's process isolation: I found it sad that while I was waiting that minute with Chrome, i could not use any other tab (i could switch, but i could not, for example, scroll or use any controls)

  • Default Search provider in Internet Explorer 8 Via GP?

    Does anyone know how to change the default search provider in IE8 Via Group Policy? IE7 seemed to work okay but once I rolled out the IE8 browser update via WSUS, it defaults back to Bing search on all clients which is done Via group policy. I have found some people making custom adm templates to change this behavior on Google but I cannot get a strait forward answer.

    I'm new to WSUS and I'm in the process of setting up a WSUS server. I'm wondering what is meant by the "Windows Internet Explorer 7/8 Dynamic Installer" category under "Under Products And Classifications"? Will this allow me to push out updates for IE 7/8 or will it also push out upgrades from IE6 or IE7 to IE7 or IE8. We're running IE7 at the moment, and want to avoid upgrading to IE8 at this point in time.

  • Page won't load on IE9 unless developer tools are started first

    One of my pages (with very extensive javascript) won't load on IE9. It loads ok in Mozilla, Chrome, Safari and Opera. If IE9 Developer tools are running it loads fine. If I load IE9, load the developer tools (F12) then kill the developer tools it still loads fine. If developer tools are running then sometimes (but not always) the first message in the console is: HTML1113: Document mode restart from Quirks to IE9 Standards Doctype is: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> If I change doctype to and remove the xmlns nothing changes. I'm stumped. Any suggestions appreciated.

  • How do I enable Ubuntu Gnome system tools

    I am running Ubuntu 10 with Gnome 2.30.2. This is a VMWare workstation image provided by another company that I do not have support in this regard. I am trying to access the graphical tools for configuring the network, users, and services but the System-Administration menu does not have these options listed. The main issue I am trying to solve is to correct the problems with the gnome menu options and network settings I have the gnome-system-tools package installed, and I am unable to run command-line versions of the tools, such as nm-applet (I get no GUI if I run that command, the process is running in the background). I realize that I can perform many tasks command-line, but I would like to use the GUI for administrative functions as I am not overly proficient for all command for restarting services and setting a static IP with a specific gateway. Further, I can run gnome-nettool, but I cannot change the IP, I can only see my network card. nm-connection-editor does not show any network cards that I can configure to change the IP. Currently, I am getting a DHCP through my NAT in VMWare, I want to set it to a specific IP address though.   • Disabled annotation tools in Skim

    Here's a portion of the toolbar in Skim In the Add Note section, why are the following tools disabled (dimmed)? Add New Highlight (A in the yellow box) Add New Underline (red line under A) Add New Strike Out (A struck out by red line) However, in the Tool Mode section, there is a drop down button (shown as active in the screenshot). To illustrate, I can select and use the Add New Underline tool, as well as the other tools I mentioned above, using the drop down button. But those tools are dimmed out in the Add Note section. Why? I have observed that the drop down button is just a duplicate of the Add Note section. Why not just enable all the buttons in the Add Note section and save the user from making an extra click just to bring down a list of tools? Is this because of some property of the presently open PDF, or what?

    The Windows clipboard is like a scratch pad used by the operating system and all running applications. When you copy or cut some text or a graphic, it is temporarily stored in the clipboard and then retrieved later when you paste the data. We’ve previously showed you how to store multiple items to the clipboard (using Clipboard Manager) in Windows, how to copy a file path to the clipboard, how to create a shortcut to clear the clipboard, and how to copy a list of files to the clipboard. There are some limitations of the Windows clipboard. Only one item can be stored at a time. Each time you copy something, the current item in the clipboard is replaced. The data on the clipboard also cannot be viewed without pasting it into an application. In addition, the data on the clipboard is cleared when you log out of your Windows session.   • OTN Developer Days (Review) - San Juan, PR - April 29, 2010

    A quick update on the San Juan, PR event. First off it was a great success with the Keynote audience of 200+. Mickey Ralat, Managing Director Oracle Caribbean, kicked off the event with a quick introduction followed by me delivering the Keynote Message - The Fusion Development Platform which is the first session in the regular OTN DD events that we run in North America. Following this session was a partner, SDT, basically marketing their services which covers the Oracle stack and then following was a very brief presentation on APEX. After this we broke out into the various tracks of Java, (APEX) DB SQL Developer, .NET on Oracle. After the breakout we ran the following sessions in the Java track: Developing with JDBC, UCP, and Java in Database, Rich Internet Applications in Web 2.0, Development Made Simple Without Coding: Developing Reusable Business Components. As expected with the various tracks, we ended up with 50 - 70 in the various sessions within the JAVA track and the audience was very impressed with the power of JDeveloper/ADF 11g and we got a number of questions from licensing cost to upgrading / integrating from Forms. As for the Forms questions, I fielded a number of them and for those I couldn't, I pointed them towards Grants resources which seemed to suffice. They were all, for the most part, unaware of the recent 11.1.1.3 release which occurred only a couple of days prior to the event. The indication was that they were going to download it and use it for the lab that was included on the DVD which we did not have the time for them to even start on.   • Distributed Development Tools -- (Version control and Project Management)

    Hello, I've recently become responsible for choosing which source control and project management software to use for a company that employs me. Currently it uses Jira (project management) and Subversion (version control). I know there are many other options out there -- the ones I know about are all in this article http://mashable.com/2010/07/14/distributed-developer-teams/ . I'm leaning towards recommending they just stay with what they have as it seems workable and any change would have to be worth the cost of switching to say github/basecamp or some other solution. Some details on the team: It's a distributed development shop. Meetings of the whole team in one room are rare. It's currently a very small development team (three developers). The project management software is used by developers and a product manager or two. What are you experiences with version control and project management web applications? Are there any you would recommend and you think are worth the switching cost of time to learn new services / implementing the change? Edit: After educating myself further on the options it appears DVCS offer powerful benefits that may be worth investing in now as opposed to later in the company's lifetime when the switching cost is higher: I'm a Subversion geek, why I should consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS?

  • How I Work: A Cloud Developer's Workstation

    I've written here a little about how I work during the day, including things like using a stand-up desk (still doing that, by the way). Inspired by a Twitter conversation yesterday, I thought I might explain how I set up my computing environment. First, a couple of important points. I work in Cloud Computing, specifically (but not limited to) Windows Azure. Windows Azure has features to run a Virtual Machine (IaaS), run code without having to control a Virtual Machine (PaaS) and use databases, video streaming, Hadoop and more (a kind of SaaS for tech pros). As such, my designs run the gamut of on-premises, VM's in the Cloud, and software that I write for a platform. I focus on data primarily, meaning that I design a lot of systems that use an RDBMS (like SQL Server or Windows Azure Databases) or a NoSQL approach (MongoDB on Azure or large-scale Key-Value Pairs in Table storage) and even Hadoop and R, and also Cloud Numerics in F#. All that being said, those things inform my choices below. Hardware I have a Lenovo X220 tablet/laptop which I really like a great deal - it's a light, tough, extremely fast system. When I travel, that's the system I take. It has 8GB of RAM, and an SSD drive. I sometimes use that to develop or work at a client's site, on the road, or in the living room when I'm not in my home office. My main system is a GateWay DX430017 - I've maxed it out on RAM, and I have two 1TB drives in it. It's not only my workstation for work; I leave it on all the time and it streams our videos, music and books. I have about 3400 e-books, and I've just started using Calibre to stream the library. I run Windows 8 on it so I can set up Hyper-V images, since Windows Azure allows me to move regular Hyper-V disks back and forth to the Cloud. That's where all my "servers" are, when I have to use an IaaS approach. The reason I use a desktop-style system rather than a laptop only approach is that a good part of my job is setting up architectures to solve really big, complex problems. That means I have to simulate entire networks on-premises, along with the Hybrid Cloud approach I use a lot. I need a lot of disk space and memory for that, and I use two huge monitors on my stand-up desk. I could probably use 10 monitors if I had the room for them. Also, since it's our home system as well, I leave it on all the time and it doesn't travel.   Software For the software for my systems, it's important to keep in mind that I not only write code, but I design databases, teach, present, and create Linux and other environments. Windows 8 - While the jury is out for me on the new interface, the context-sensitive search, integrated everything, and speed is just hands-down the right choice. I've evaluated a server OS, Linux, even an Apple, but I just am not as efficient on those as I am with Windows 8. Visual Studio Ultimate - I develop primarily in .NET (C# and F# mostly) and I use the Team Foundation Server in the cloud, and I'm asked to do everything from UI to Services, so I need everything. Windows Azure SDK, Windows Azure Training Kit - I need the first to set up my Azure PaaS coding, and the second has all the info I need for PaaS, IaaS and SaaS. This is primarily how I get paid. :) SQL Server Developer Edition - While I might install Oracle, MySQL and Postgres on my VM's, the "outside" environment is SQL Server for an RDBMS. I install the Developer Edition because it has the same features as Enterprise Edition, and comes with all the client tools and documentation. Microsoft Office -  Even if I didn't work here, this is what I would use. I've just grown too accustomed to doing business this way to change, so my advice is always "use what works", and this does. The parts I use are: OneNote (and a Math Add-in) - I do almost everything - and I mean everything in OneNote. I can code, do high-end math, present, design, collaborate and more. All my notebooks are on my Skydrive. I can use them from any system, anywhere. If you take the time to learn this program, you'll be hooked. Excel with PowerPivot - Don't make that face. Excel is the world's database, and every Data Scientist I know - even the ones where I teach at the University of Washington - know it, use it, and love it.  Outlook - Primary communications, CRM and contact tool. I have all of my social media hooked up to it, so when I get an e-mail from you, I see everything, see all the history we've had on e-mail, find you on a map and more. Lync - I was fine with LiveMeeting, although it has it's moments. For me, the Lync client is tres-awesome. I use this throughout my day, present on it, stay in contact with colleagues and the folks on the dev team (who wish I didn't have it) and more.  PowerPoint - Once again, don't make that face. Whenever I see someone complaining about PowerPoint, I have 100% of the time found they don't know how to use it. If you suck at presenting or creating content, don't blame PowerPoint. Works great on my machine. :) Zoomit - Magnifier - On Windows 7 (and 8 as well) there's a built-in magnifier, but I install Zoomit out of habit. It enlarges the screen. If you don't use one of these tools (or their equivalent on some other OS) then you're presenting/teaching wrong, and you should stop presenting/teaching until you get them and learn how to show people what you can see on your tiny, tiny monitor. :) Cygwin - Unix for Windows. OK, that's not true, but it's mostly that. I grew up on mainframes and Unix (IBM and HP, thank you) and I can't imagine life without  sed, awk, grep, vim, and bash. I also tend to take a lot of the "Science" and "Development" and "Database" packages in it as well. PuTTY - Speaking of Unix, when I need to connect to my Linux VM's in Windows Azure, I want to do it securely. This is the tool for that. Notepad++ - Somewhere between torturing myself in vim and luxuriating in OneNote is Notepad++. Everyone has a favorite text editor; this one is mine. Too many features to name, and it's free. Browsers - I install Chrome, Firefox and of course IE. I know it's in vogue to rant on IE, but I tend to think for myself a great deal, and I've had few (none) problems with it. The others I have for the haterz that make sites that won't run in IE. Visio - I've used a lot of design packages, but none have the extreme meta-data edit capabilities of Visio. I don't use this all the time - it can be rather heavy, but what it does it does really well. I also present this way when I'm not using PowerPoint. Yup, I just bring up Visio and diagram away as I'm chatting with clients. Depending on what we're covering, this can be the right tool for that. Tweetdeck - The AIR one, not that new disaster they came out with. I live on social media, since you, dear readers, are my cube-mates. When I get tired of you all, I close Tweetdeck. When I need help or someone needs help from me, or if I want to see a picture of a cat while I'm coding, I bring it up. It's up most all day and night. Windows Media Player - I listen to Trance or Classical when I code, and I find music managers overbearing and extra. I just use what comes in the box, and it works great for me. R - F# and Cloud Numerics now allows me to load in R libraries (yay!) and I use this for statistical work on big data loads. Microsoft Math - One of the most amazing, free, rich, amazing, awesome, amazing calculators out there. I get the 64-bit version for quick math conversions, plots and formula-checks. Python - I know, right? Who knew that the scientific community loved Python so much. But they do. I use 2.7; not as much runs with 3+. I also use IronPython in Visual Studio, or I edit in Notepad++ Camstudio recorder - Windows PSR - In much of my training, and all of my teaching at the UW, I need to show a process on a screen. Camstudio records screen and voice, and it's free. If I need to make static training, I use the Windows PSR tool that's built right in.   • Managing Personal Projects As Solo Developer - Getting out of depth and failing projects

    I need some advice on project management. I start a project, and often times it will a large project for a solo developer. Usually its a web project. I handle everything from the UI, to the JS, PHP, server management etc. Half way in I feel out of my depth. I lose where I am, so I spend a couple of days away from the project to avoid the stress and before you know it, it becomes another unfinished project. I try to use frameworks and code libraries to make my developments easier on myself. Sometimes I will complete a project so it "works" and then go back and handle errors, design the UI properly and stuff. But without fail I will always end up out of my depth. I've though about outsourcing tasks such as the UI, and the behaviour, and focusing just on the PHP - which I feel is my strong point. But then pride kicks in, and I don't feel at one with a project I haven't completed myself. Does this make sense? I am sure there are many others who have felt like this either at home, or at work, and I would love some advice on managing my projects better.

  • SDLC/Deployment/Documentation ERP/framework that minimizes developer misery

    I was wondering if there are favorite SDLC/Deployment/Documentation/Versioning ERP/frameworks that work with popular SDLC methodologies, such as Agile, that minimize developer exposure to what most programmer hate to do most -- PAPERWORK ? Often, release management is extremely inefficient and there is a lot of data duplication across documents that are required to accompany changes -- e.g. when submitting a deployment request, I must list all files and their revisions from source control -- but why is that necessary if every file revision I check in is pinned to a work order and a deployment request is just a list of work orders -- such info should be able to be pulled from the system automatically without me needing to extract it and report it. And then there is a backout plan -- well just do everything in reverse from what you did to deploy -- why do you need specific instructions? Similar applies for documentation... So I am curious if there is an overall, all-encompassing ERP that includes source control and minimizes paperwork by sharing centralized data across different documents (such as documentation being pulled from javadoc without needing to write it separately) associated with SDLC yet does not compromise structure and control over the code base and release management.

  • Tools for modelling data and workflows using structured text files

    Consider a case when I want to try some idea of an application. But I want to avoid investing a lot of effort in coding UI/work flows/database schema etc before I see that it's going to be useful to me (as example of potential user). My idea is stay lightweight and put all the data in text files. So the components could be following: Domain objects are represented by text files or their fragments Domain objects are grouped by their type using directories Structure the files using some both human- and machine-friendly format, e.g. YAML Use some smart text editor (e.g. vim, emacs, rubymine) to edit and navigate those files Use color schemes and macros/custom commands of the text editor to effectively manipulate those files Use scripts (or a lightweight web framework like Sinatra) to try some business logic ideas on top of the data model The question is: Are there tools or toolkits that support or can be adopted to this approach? Also any ideas, links to articles/other knowledge sources are very welcome. And more specific question: What is the simplest way to index and update index of files with YAML files?

  • Oracle OpenWorld Preview: Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge

Noel (@noelportugal) and I have been working on something new for OpenWorld (@oracleopenworld) for quite some time, and today, I got the final approvals to go ahead with the Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge. The skinny. The Challenge is a modified hackathon, designed to run during OpenWorld and JavaOne (@javaoneconf), and attendees of both conferences are welcome to join and compete for the single prize of $500 in Amazon gift cards. There’s only one prize, so bring your A-game. The Challenge begins Sunday, September 30 at 7 PM and ends Wednesday, October 3 at 4 PM. You can and should register now, but we won’t begin approving  registrations until Sunday at 7 PM. For legal reasons, you’ll need to register with a corporate email address, not a free webmail one, e.g. Gmail, Hotmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, ISP-provided mail, etc. If you work for a competitor of Oracle, sorry but you’re not eligible.   • SSMS Tools Pack 1.9.3 is out!

    This release adds a great new feature and fixes a few bugs. The new feature called Window Content History saves the whole text in all all opened SQL windows every N minutes with the default being 30 minutes. This feature fixes the shortcoming of the Query Execution History which is saved only when the query is run. If you're working on a large script and never execute it, the existing Query Execution History wouldn't save it. By contrast the Window Content History saves everything in a .sql file so you can even open it in your SSMS. The Query Execution History and Window Content History files are correlated by the same directory and file name so when you search through the Query Execution History you get to see the whole saved Window Content History for that query. Because Window Content History saves data in simple searchable .sql files there isn't a special search editor built in. It is turned ON by default but despite the built in optimizations for space minimization, be careful to not let it fill your disk. You can see how it looks in the pictures in the feature list. The fixed bugs are: SSMS 2008 R2 slowness reported by few people. An object explorer context menu bug where it showed multiple SSMS Tools entries and showed wrong entries for a node. A datagrid bug in SQL snippets. Ability to read illegal XML characters from log files. Fixed the upper limit bug of a saved history text to 5 MB. A bug when searching through result sets prevents search. A bug with Text formatting erroring out for certain scripts. A bug with finding servers where it would return null even though servers existed. Run custom scripts objects had a bug where |SchemaName| didn't display the correct table schema for columns. This is fixed. Also |NodeName| and |ObjectName| values now show the same thing.   You can download the new version 1.9.3 here. Enjoy it!

  • A Great Time at Developer Academy 4 In Israel

    I had a great time today at Developer Academy 4.  It was in a beautiful part of Tel Aviv.  The weather was great and the food fantastic.  They had well over 1,000 paid attendees, so the house was PACKED.   Dev Academys page on Facebook.  Including some pictures of me.  I was very impressed with the high tech community in Israel.  Clearly Israel is a hub of hightech.                 I did a demo in the keynote...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   • Final Release of Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 Released

    If you haven’t already heard the news, the final release of the Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2010 have been released! That’s great news for Silverlight developers and to top it off the crew up at Microsoft even snuck in a few new features including intellisense for styles (a big deal in my opinion) and the ability to easily manipulate Grid rows and columns.  One of the most time consuming (and boring) tasks experienced by developers is also covered with the new “Go To Value Definition” feature that allows you to jump directly to style definitions with ease.  That feature alone is worth the upgrade especially if you’re working with a large application that uses a lot of styles.
