• Summary of our Recent Pull Request Enhancements on CodePlex

  Over the past several weeks, we’ve been incrementally rolling out a bunch of enhancements around our pull request workflow for Git and Mercurial projects. Our goal is to make contributing to open source projects a simple and rewarding experience, and we’ll continue to invest in this area. Here’s a summary of the changes so far, in case you’ve missed them. As always, if you have any feedback, please let us know, whether on our ideas page or via Twitter. Support for branches You can now pick the source and destination branches for your pull request, whether you’re sending one from your fork, or using it within a project to collaborate with your other trusted contributors. A redesigned creation experience Our old pull request creation form was rather lacking. It asked for a title and comment in a small modal dialog, but that was about it. We knew we could do better, so we rethought the experience. Now, when you create a pull request, you’re taken to a new page that let’s you select the source and destination, and gives you information on the diffs and commits that you’re sending, so you can confirm that you’re sending the right set of changes. Inline code snippets in discussion If users comment on code in your pull request, we now display a preview of the snippet of relevant code inline with their comment on the discussion. Subsequent replies on that line are combined in a single thread to preserve your context. No more clicking and hunting to find where the comments are. And you can add another inline comment right from the discussion area. Comment notifications You can now elect receive an e-mail notification if a user comments on your pull request. If it’s on a line of code, we’ll display the relevant code snippet in the e-mail. Redesigned diff viewer Our old diff viewer hadn’t been touched in a while, and was in need of an update. We started with a visual facelift to use standard red/green colors for additions/deletions and remove the noisy “dots” that represented spaces and that littered the diff viewer. Based on feedback that the viewable region for diffs was too small, especially for smaller screen resolutions, we revamped the way the viewport for the code is sized, and now expand it to fill the majority of the browser height when scrolling down. The set of improvements we implemented here also apply anywhere diffs are viewed, not just for pull requests.

  I know the title is probably not very clear, so I'll try to be as clear as possible here. I'm running xubuntu on my netbook, and I'm using kile for my latex editing. Since kile is native to kde, I had to manually set it to open pdfs and dvis on evince instead of okular. Now, last time I played around with LaTeX I was using TeXnic center on windows, and it had a very neat feature. Whenever I hit "QuickBuild", not only would it open the output .dvi file, but it would also show me exactly the piece of text I was editing. That is, if I were editing line 13 of the 7th of my document, when I compiled it, the dvi viewer would automatically take me to line 13 on the 7th page of the document, so I wouldn't have to scroll all the way down to it every time I compiled the .tex file. I'm guessing this is a pretty standard feature, and kile probably supports it. But since I don't know what it's called, I'm trying to be clear as to what I'm talking about. Problem is, this feature is not working for me right now, and I'm guessing it's either because evince does not support it, or because I have to manually configure it. Which one is it? And how do I manually configure it, if that's the case?

• Installing and running a guest OS on KVM-qemu with only serial console access

  I am trying to installing a bsd distro with virt-installer. With a Linux distro I used this: virt-install -n debian -r 1024 --vcpus=1 --accelerate -v --disk /var/kvm/installation-disks/debian.img,size=6--nographics --network=bridge:br0,model=ne2k_pci,mac=52:54:00:66:68:09 -l http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/installer-amd64/current/images/ -x console=ttyS0,115200 This loads the installer directly from the online mirror. With Fedora I used this mirror: http://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/mirrors/fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/16/Fedora/x86_64/os/ Are there such mirrors for freebsd or openbsd? The reason I want direct installable ftp/http mirrors is because I can access my physical server only via ssh, and it doesn't have a X server or a window manager to give me a VNC GUI. When I tried installing centos 6 with an online mirror I was able to finish the installation via serial console, but after I rebooted it, the serial console never worked for me. I tried everything possible---editing menu.lst, inttab and securtty files. Fedora 16 booted fine from serial console, but got stuck when it loaded anaconda installer. I tried editing freebsd iso installation media by adding serial console option to boot option. And installation was successful. But couldn't boot into it becuase it wasn't giving console acess. I couldn't edit any files as ufs partition cannot be loaded with write access on my Ubuntu server 10.04. Only debian squeeze worked well, it worked for me even without editing a single configuration file. I want to have CLI versions of fedora/centos and freebsd/openbsd. But, looks like there isn't any hope for me to have them, as I have to depend on a serial console to do everything.

• Iptables QUEUE Target and Snort

  I'm trying to set up a firewall with support for snort, and it is dropping all of my packets when I add the QUEUE target. I've made it like this, but the QUEUE target is not allowing the packets to be processed any further: -A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -j QUEUE -A INPUT -j ACCEPT # It's not allowing anything past QUEUE, as you can see below in the count. > iptables -I INPUT -nv pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination 6707 395K ACCEPT tcp -- * * 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 tcp dpt:22 933 138K QUEUE all -- * * 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 0 0 ACCEPT all -- * * 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 I'm eventually going to change it to forward, but I'm just trying to get it working for now. • GVIM hangs when saving through GVFS' FTP

  I loved Gnome's Nautilus and FTP integration and being able to mount a remote FTP directory as a regular bookmark/directory, and double clicking any remote files to open in any unmodified program. I also loved editing text files with GVim. However, if I double clicked file on Nautilus to open a text file in Gvim, then saving a file will take about 10 seconds and GVim will hang for that amount of time. The major irritant is that I cannot continue editing while the text editor is waiting for the write to finish, this delay interrupted my workflow and thought process and saving becomes a painful process. The other problem is that I don't think simply uploading a file should take that much time. I'm aware of GVim's internal FTP support, but they are not as well integrated with Nautilus's FTP. So a few question: Is there a way to make GVim or GVFS to save in background while I continue editing? Why is GVFS so slow? Is there any way to set GVFS to use a single persistent FTP connection instead of creating a new FTP connection each time? I'm on Gentoo Linux x86-64.

  Feel like I'm going a bit nutty here. I have a detail view with a few stand-alone UITextFields, a few UITextFields in UITAbleViewCells, and one single UITableViewCell that will be used to hold notes, if there are any. I only want this cell selectable when I am in edit mode. When I am not in edit mode, I do not want to be able to select it. Selecting the cell (while in edit mode) will fire a method that will init a new view. I know this is very easy, but I am missing something somewhere. Here are the current selection methods I am using: -(NSIndexPath *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView willSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { if (!self.editing) { NSLog(@"Returning nil, not in edit mode"); return nil; } NSLog(@"Cell will be selected, not in edit mode"); if (indexPath.section == 0) { NSLog(@"Comments cell will be selected"); return indexPath; } return nil; } -(void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { if (!self.editing) { NSLog(@"Not in edit mode. From my understanding of the willSelectRowAtIndexPath method, this shouldn't be happening. Maybe I am wrong about this? 2) When I enter edit mode, I can't select anything at all. the willSelectRowAtIndexPath method never fires, and neither does the didSelectRowAtIndexPath. The only thing I am doing in the setEditing method, is hiding the back button while editing, and assigning firstResponder to the top textField to get the keyboard to pop up. I thought maybe the first responder was getting in the way of the click (which would be dumb), but even with that commented out, I cannot perform the cell selection during editing.

  Hi All, I have an NSTableView working correctly except when I'm editing one of the table items. If the user is still in edit mode, and it presses the Sheet OK button, the tableiew doesn't update. How do I force the tableview to commit the changes when the user press the ok button (closesheet). Also, how do I handle the ESC Key to cancel the editing? Sorry if the questions looks absurd, but I've been only on developing on Mac for a month.
