I started creating a calculator to show some savings if they used elearning. I wanted your input to validate that data. How many Policies your practice/hospital need to sign and average number of pages per policy? Also how many employees need to sign these policies? • Slow network file copy on Windows 7

  I wrote a program that uses xcopy to transfer files (usually between 1KB and 2MB) over our intranet. Usually, I am copying files from my host machine (Windows 7 x64) to a VMWare virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 (the VM is running on my host machine, if that matters). On Windows XP, the file transfers usually only require a few seconds to complete. But on my Windows 7 machine, the transfer of the first file (1.5 MB) takes around 1.5 minutes to complete. This is true whether I use xcopy, robocopy, or programmatically using File.Copy(). I noticed that if I use File.Copy, the first transfer is very slow and subsequent transfers are much faster. Any clue how I can speed up the process? Is there a setting in Windows 7 (or server 2008) that I could try?

I know most of them would welcome it but they did not opt-in for this new related service. I don't want to send out the email invite only to find out I got into some Spam Act trouble. What is a friendly way to reach these targetted audience?

• Image Management System with Different Levels of Access

  I work in the graphics department for a real estate brokerage, and we deal with a lot of photos. Agents take the photos, upload them to me, I touch up and standardize the photos, then I add them to an in-house server for future use by the graphics dept. I'd like to make the "sanitized" photo files available to the agents to use when they want, but I don't want the agents poking around the graphics department's files (things get misplaced, renamed and messed up in a hurry). What would be perfect is if we could create a read-only "mirror" (correct term?) of that server that could be accessed by the agents as needed, but which wouldn't feed back into our "sanitized" file system. Edit: I'm looking for an automatic solution... manually posting the files to two separate locations seems like an inelegant solution when working digitally. Edit: I'm trying to avoid any access barriers to the public (dirty) file system (however it's finally implemented). There are 40-50 real estate agents who need to access these files, half of whom can't reliably download an email attachment.

• Why do I have inconsistent network issues with my laptop's wireless?

  I'm having trouble with my laptop Internet connection. It's patchy at best and resets or freezes a lot. The signal strength is also random. I thought it might be a driver issue but now I don't know. Three other computers using the same wireless network run well. I've switched out wireless routers so I don't think it's the router. I thought it might be the laptop's internal wireless card but I just bought an external USB network card and I'm still having problems. Specs Lenovo T-60p Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Patches/drivers are up to date I only use one of the below at a time, disabling the other: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG v. 13.3.0.137 (Internal wireless) Medialink Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter (USB wireless) Any ideas on what might be the problem?

• Prevent Windows 7 PC from sleeping while a download is in progress

  While I'm downloading a large file on Windows 7 using Google Chrome, my computer goes to sleep. I could obviously set the computer to not sleep at all (or change the interval before the computer sleeps). What I want to know is: Is there a way to make Windows 7 not sleep as long as a download is in progress? (perhaps when any network activity is going on?). I've looked in the Advanced Power settings, and haven't seen any obvious setting.

• How do I keep a server connected as a volume after sleep?

  This would be in OS X 10.6... I know I can connect a server share as a volume and do so via a script so every time I boot up it gets mapped. How can I make sure that same share is mapped after my computer comes out of sleep mode? It seems like the connection gets dropped. Can the same process map the drive for me when I boot up?

• How can I forward certain emails based on header information with Postfix?

  We receive service requests via a particular email. The request is then forwarded to other addresses, using an entry in virtual_alias_maps. Upon seeing the word "EMERGENCY" in the subject line of a request to this email, I would also like to forward this to another address (an alias of our administrator's SMS email addresses). I think I can accomplish this with header checks and the REDIRECT command. However, REDIRECT only sends it to the redirected address, not the forwarded addresses. In the case of "EMERGENCY" I would like it to go to the redirect address and the original forwarded addresses. I am fairly new to Postfix and I feel like I am missing something here. Any suggestions?

• Rewrite 2 different directories with htaccess?

  I have a tricky problem (for me at least). I'm trying to rewrite / to a folder /webroot/www. I have some simple code and it works: RewriteRule ^$ /webroot/www/ [L] However at the same time if the URL starts with components, followed by anything else (ex. foo, as in /components/foo), and foo is an actual directory that exists inside components, I should rewrite to /components/foo/www instead. How can I achieve that? I can't seem to figure it out. I'm using Apache with .htaccess.

• Powering off sends me to "Launch Windows Repair" automatically instead! What do I do?

  With Windows 2008 R2 Server, I noticed that if I remotely reboot the machine (because it is hung or I think it is hung), the server, when it restarts, defaults to "Launch Windows Repair" (or something similar) rather than "Start Windows Normally". To change it, I have to trek down to the server room and change the boot up otherwise it will go into an endless loop (because I don't have the setup media and DVD-ROM installed). This seems to be new with 2008 R2 because I have not seen it elsewhere. What do I do? How can I remove this or change the default?

• Tungsten for MySQL: Online Schema Upgrade

  In a recent presentation the Continuent folks claim that they support "daylight maintenance" or online schema upgrades. See Clustering for the Masses: A Gentle Introduction to Tungsten for MySQL, especially pages 22-28. Is anyone using Tungsten for MySQL in this way? It sounds too good to be true. I also wonder if the Community Edition supports all of the features discussed in the presentation. They say elsewhere that it is not crippleware but in their own productization table "Zero downtime upgrade" appears to only be available in the more advanced versions. So I'm skeptical. Community support seems rather non-existent so a commercial license with support is probably warranted (they do not disclose pricing). I have not contacted them directly yet as I prefer community vetting but this solution, despite its value proposition and power to make an admin's life easier just doesn't seem to get the kind of attention it might warrant. If not Tungsten for MySQL, how do you handle online schema upgrades? MySQL Cluster (NDBENGINE) is not well-suited to web applications. Cheers

• Discover intended Foreign Keys from JOINS in scripts

  I'm inheriting a database that has 400 tables and only 150 foreign key constraints registered. Knowing what I do about the application and looking at the table columns, it's easy to say that there ought to be a lot more. I'm afraid that the current application software will break if I started adding the missing FKs because the developers have probably come to rely on this "freedom", but step one in fixing the problem is to come up with the list of missing FKs so we can evaluate them as a team. To make matters worse, the referencing columns don't share a naming convention. The relationships ARE coded informally into the hundreds of ad-hoc queries and stored procedures, so my hope is to parse these files programmatically looking for JOINS between actual tables (but not table variables, etc). Challenges I foresee in this approach are: newlines, optional aliases and table hints, alias resolution. Any better ideas? (Besides quitting) Are there any pre-built tools that can solve this? I don't think regex can handle this. Do you disagree? SQL Parsers? I tried using Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.SqlParser.Parser but all that is exposed is the lexer - can't get an AST out of it - all that stuff is internal.

Now, I sometimes face an issue where both machine PC and machine MAC have different versions of the same code, and I would like them to share a common source. • how to remove location block from $uri in nginx configuration?

  I have a rewrite in my ngix conf file that works properly except it seems to include the location block as part of the $uri variable. I only want the path after the location block. My current config code is: location /cargo { try_files $uri $uri/ /cargo/index.php?_REWRITE_COMMAND=$uri&args; } Using an example url of http://localhost/cargo/testpage the redirect works, however the value of the "_REWRITE_COMMAND" parameter received by my php file is "/cargo/testpage". I need to strip off the location block and just have "testpage" as the $uri I am pretty sure there is a regex syntax to split the $uri and assign it to a new variable using $1 $2 etc, but I can't find any example to do just a variable assignment using a regex that is not part of a rewrite statement. I've been looking and trying for hours and I just can't seem to get past this last step. I also know I could just strip this out on the application code, but the reason I want to try to fix it in the nginx conf is for compatibility reasons as it also runs on Apache. I also should say that I have figured out a really hacky way to do it, but it involves an "if" statement to check for file existance and the documentation specifically says not to do it that way. -- UPDATE: ANSWERED BY theuni: The regex goes in the location block definition. one note of caution is that php handler location needs to be ABOVE this location, otherwise you will get a server error because it goes into an infinite redirect loop location ~ ^/cargo/(.*) { try_files $1 /cargo/$1/ /cargo/index.php?_REWRITE_COMMAND=$1&args; }

• How to ignore hard drives size with Windows Server Backup (Win-2008) restore?

  I used Windows Server Backup to backup my 640GB boot drive. Only about 30GB is used, and the backup was very fast. Now I am trying to restore the image to a 500GB hard drive but it is saying that the drive is too small... even though I only had 30GB on the original backup. How do I overide this and have the restore ignore that I only have a 500GB drive? If I can't, then I can't restore the hard drive with anything except one that is equal to or bigger than the original hard drive - which would be a real bummer.

• Changing Chrome Working Directories on Mac clients

  We're using Mac OSX 10.6.8 with NFS for home directories. Chrome seems to not like this, for a user who is logged in more than one machine. AFP was ok, but for other reasons we need NFS. It only allows you to start one instance. Ie, userA logged in to Mac1, Mac2. Can only have chrome open on Mac1 OR mac2, not both. I have read at this thread, changing working directory, and sym link can fix... but I can't find the details. Can someone help?

  During an interview process you might be asked to prepare a presentation as one of the steps in the recruitment process. Below, we want to give you some tips to help you prepare for what might be considered a daunting aspect of a recruitment process. Main purpose of the presentation Always keep in mind the main purpose of what the presentation is meant to convey. Generally speaking, an interview presentation is for the company to check if you have the ability to represent and sell the organization (and yourself), to the internal and external stakeholders in the position you are applying for. A presentation is often also part of the recruitment process to check whether you can structure and explain your experience and thoughts in a convincing manner. If you are unsure about the purpose of the presentation, feel free to ask your recruiter for more information. Preparation As with every task you do, preparation is key, so is the case with an interview presentation. It is important to know who your audience is. You have to adapt your presentation to your audience, ensuring that you are presenting the facts which they would want to hear. Furthermore, make sure you practice your presentation beforehand; this will make you more confident in your presenting skills. Also, estimate the length of your presentation as presentations or pitches during the recruitment process are often capped to a certain time limit. Structure Every presentation should have a beginning, middle and an end. Make sure you give an overview of your presentation and tell the audience what they can expect. Your presentation should have a logical order and a clear message. Always build up to your key message with strong arguments and evidence. When speaking about the topic, make sure you convey your points with conviction. Also be sure you believe the message you bring forward, if you don’t believe it yourself, then the audience definitely won’t! Delivery When you think back on successful presentations you have seen, the presenter was most likely always standing up. So if asked to do a presentation, follow this example and make sure you stand up as well. Standing up when you are doing your presentation shows confidence and control. Another important aspect in the delivery of the presentation is to relax and speak slowly and with enough volume for the audience to hear you. Speaking slowly allows the audience the time to absorb the information you are providing to them. Visual Using PowerPoint, or an equivalent, makes it very easy to have a visually attractive presentation. Make sure however that you take into account that the visual aids you use are there to support you, not for you to read word for word what is on the slides! Questions When starting your presentation, it is a good idea to tell your audience that you will deal with any questions they might have at the end of the presentation. This way it doesn’t interrupt your train of thought and the flow of your presentation. Answering questions at the end may give you additional opportunities to further expand on your facts in the topic. Some people might play the “devil’s advocate” role and confront you with opposing opinions, if this is the case, take your time to reiterate your points and remain professional in your response. A good way to deal with this is to start interacting with other members of the audience and ask for their opinions, so it will become a group discussion. This will also shows strong leadership skills, as you are open to discuss and ask for other opinions.   I have been dreaming of writing book for really long time, and I finally got the chance – in fact, two chances!  I recently wrote two books: SQL Programming Joes 2 Pros: Programming and Development for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 [Amazon] | [Flipkart] | [Kindle] and SQL Wait Stats Joes 2 Pros: SQL Performance Tuning Techniques Using Wait Statistics, Types & Queues [Amazon] | [Flipkart] | [Kindle].  I had a lot of fun writing these two books, even though sometimes I had to sacrifice some family time and time for other personal development to write the books. The good side of writing book is that when the efforts put in writing books are recognize by books readers and kind organizations like expressor studio. Book Signing Event Book writing is a complex process.  Even after you spend months, maybe years, writing the material you still have to go through the editing and fact checking processes.  And, once the book is out there, there is no way to take back all the copies to change mistakes or add something you forgot.  Most of the time it is a one-way street. Book Signing Event Just like every author, I had a dream that after the books were written, they would be loved by people and gain acceptance by an audience. My first book, SQL Programming Joes 2 Pros: Programming and Development for Microsoft SQL Server 2008, is extremely popular because it helps lots of people learn various fundamental topics. My second book covers beginning to learn SQL Server Wait Stats, which is a relatively new subject. This book has had very good acceptance in the community. Book Signing Event Helping my community is my primary focus, so I was happy to see this year’s SQLPASS tag line: ‘This is a Community.‘ At the event, the expressor studio guys came up with a very novel idea. They had previously used my books and they had found them very useful. They got 100 copies of the book and decided to give it away to community folks. They invited me and my co-author Rick Morelan to hold a book signing event. We did a book signing on Thursday between 1 pm and 2 pm. Book Signing Event This event was one of the best events for me. This was my first book signing event outside of India. I reached the book signing location around 20 minutes before the scheduled time and what I saw was a big line for the book signing event. I felt very honored looking at the crowd and all the people around the event location. I felt very humbled when I saw some of my very close friends standing in the line to get my signature. It was really heartwarming to see so many enthusiasts waiting for more than an hour to get my signature. While standing in line I had the chance to have a conversation with every single person who showed up for the signature. I made sure that I repeated every single name and wrote it in every book with my signature. There is saying that if we write a name once we will remember it forever. I want to remember all of you who saw me at the book signing. Your comments were wonderful, your feedback was amazing and you were all very supportive. Book Signing Event I have made a note of every conversation I had with all of you when I was signing the books. Once again, I just want to express my thanks for coming to my book signing event. The whole experience was very humbling. On the top of it, I want to thank the expressor studio people who made it possible, who organized the whole signing event. I am so thankful to them for facilitating the whole experience, which is going to be hard to beat by any future experience.   I'm developing my first ever game for Android where I'm still learning about using of framework. To begin I made two sprites of ball where one ball is movable by dragging and another one is just standing on it's place on load. Now I've already added the collision listener for both sprites and as tested it's working properly.
