  • What's the difference between logging and printing to the console

    This is kind of a philosophical question. Basically people often ask if I am logging - and since I am not a full time programmer, but someone who programs often but is actually more of a requirements analyst, I don't know all the best practices. I use Java a lot so I often do things like System.out.println() What's the difference in theory between the two? Ultimately aren't I also logging? Esp, if I prefix my comments with something like "ERROR:" or "WARN:" ?

  • Printing a field with additional dots in haskell

    I'm writing a function called printField. This function takes an int and a string as arguments and then then prints a field like this "Derp..." with this: printField 7 "Derp". When the field consists of digits the output should be "...3456". The function I wrote looks like this: printField :: Int -> String -> String printField x y = if isDigit y then concat(replicate n ".") ++ y else y ++ concat(replicate n ".") where n = x - length y This obviously isn't working. The error I get from GHC is: Couldn't match type `[Char]' with `Char' Expected type: Char Actual type: String In the first argument of `isDigit', namely `y' In the expression: isDigit y In the expression: if isDigit y then concat (replicate n ".") ++ y else y ++ concat (replicate n ".") I can't get it to work :(. Can anyone help me out? Please keep in mind that I'm new to Haskell and functional programming in general.

    I have a tree data type: data Tree a b = Branch b (Tree a b) (Tree a b) | Leaf a ...and I need to make it an instance of Show, without using deriving. I have found that nicely displaying a little branch with two leaves is easy: instance (Show a, Show b) => Show (Tree a b) where show (Leaf x) = show x show (Branch val l r) = " " ++ show val ++ "\n" ++ show l ++ " " ++ show r But how can I extend a nice structure to a tree of arbitrary size? It seems like determining the spacing would require me to know just how many leaves will be at the very bottom (or maybe just how many leaves there are in total) so that I can allocate all the space I need there and just work 'up.' I would probably need to call a size function. I can see this being workable, but is that making it harder than it is?

  • Contingent Header Category Label

    Right now the header has a bit of code in it that queries the section name and then uses that section name as the h1 title in the page. It works fine. However, I want to selectively break that operation in certain categories and give myself the ability to manually enter the h1 title for a given section. Here's what I'm struggling with: how can I maintain the automatic query and title selection in most instances, but selectively break it in a given category (the 'blog' category, for starters)? I want something functionally equivalent to: name .. ", " .. msg .. "?" but not so ugly, in lua. Okay, so I can do string.format("%s, %s?", name, msg), but can I go even a step further, something like perl style, where I can go: "%name, %msg?" Thanks!

    Hello, I'm new to C++, and I'm trying to write a short C++ program that reads lines of text from a file, with each line containing one integer key and one alphanumeric string value (no embedded whitespace). The number of lines is not known in advance, (i.e., keep reading lines until end of file is reached). The program needs to use the 'std::map' data structure to store integers and strings read from input (and to associate integers with strings). The program then needs to output string values (but not integer values) to standard output, 1 per line, sorted by integer key values (smallest to largest). So, for example, suppose I have a text file called "data.txt" which contains the following three lines: 10 dog -50 horse 0 cat -12 zebra 14 walrus The output should then be: horse zebra cat dog walrus I've pasted below the progress I've made so far on my C++ program: #include <fstream> #include <iostream> #include <map> using namespace std; using std::map; int main () { string name; signed int value; ifstream myfile ("data.txt"); while (! myfile.eof() ) { getline(myfile,name,'\n'); myfile >> value >> name; cout << name << endl; } return 0; myfile.close(); } Unfortunately, this produces the following incorrect output: horse cat zebra walrus If anyone has any tips, hints, suggestions, etc. on changes and revisions I need to make to the program to get it to work as needed, can you please let me know?     I've noticed that when an instance with an overloaded str method is passed to the print() function as an argument, it prints as intended. However, when passing a container that contains one of those instances to print(), it uses the repr method instead. That is to say, print(x) displays the correct string representation of x, and print(x, y) works correctly, but print([x]) or print((x, y)) prints the repr representation instead. First off, why does this happen? Secondly, is there a way to correct that behavior of print() in this circumstance?

  • Printing from a Windows Service

    Ok, I am trying to print a page from a windows service that I installed using a Visual Studio setup project. At first I set the Account property yo Local System, but it will tell me that there are no printers installed (and there are). So I changed it to user and now it just doesn't print (no error or anything). I did some Googleing and basically it said that "Interact with Desktop" should be enabled. To programatically do this you need to edit the registry settings for this service (which really is second prize). I tried to manually set it on the properties dialog under Services, but then I need to change the Account back to Local System, which brings me back to the "No Printers Installed" problem. Any ideas?

    I am pretty sure all of you are familiar with the concept of the Big4, and I have several stuffs to do print in each of the constructor, assignment, destructor, and copy constructor. The restriction is this: I CAN'T use more than one newline (e.g., ƒn or std::endl) in any method I can have a method called print, so I am guessing print is where I will put that precious one and only '\n', my problem is that how can the method print which prints different things on each of the element I want to print in each of the Big4? Any idea? Maybe overloading the Big4?

    I have a struct like this typedef struct _somestruct { int a; int b; }SOMESTRUCT,*LPSOMESTRUCT; I am creating an object for the struct and trying to print it's address like this int main() { LPSOMESTRUCT val = (LPSOMESTRUCT)malloc(sizeof(SOMESTRUCT)); printf("0%x\n", val); return 0; } ..and I get this warning warning C4313: 'printf' : '%x' in format string conflicts with argument 1 of type 'LPSOMESTRUCT' So, I tried to cast the address to int like this printf("0%x\n", static_cast<int>(val)); But I get this error: error C2440: 'static_cast' : cannot convert from 'LPSOMESTRUCT' to 'int' What am I missing here? How to avoid this warning? Thanks.
