  I loved appjet (the programming environment) before it was taken over by Google. What other web based complete programming environments are out there? Which one do you think is best for starting to do real world coding the fastest? I really think coding from your browser will make programming more accessible to the public. Are there any out there that use a vim style, (e.g. jsvi) in combination with free server side hosting? The last time I looked at Bespin it was a little green. Are there others?

  I am securing a .net web service (framework 2.0) with WSE3 mutualCertificate10Security Assertion. When request are valid all is fine and the response is wellformed, but when the request is invalid (cause a invalid signature, failed check, or soapexception thrown), the web server isn't able to process the response to send to the client. The error in application event log is: An error occured processing an outgoing fault response. Details of the error causing the processing failure: System.InvalidOperationException: Send security filter on the server could not retrieve the operation protection requirements from the operation state. en Microsoft.Web.Services3.Security.SecureConversationServiceSendSecurityFilter.SecureMessage(SoapEnvelope envelope, Security security) en Microsoft.Web.Services3.Security.SendSecurityFilter.ProcessMessage(SoapEnvelope envelope) en Microsoft.Web.Services3.Pipeline.ProcessOutputMessage(SoapEnvelope envelope) en Microsoft.Web.Services3.WseProtocol.GetFilteredResponseEnvelope(SoapEnvelope outputEnvelope) All certificate permissions are OK (when request is OK the web service is able to sign the response).   Hi, I have a web service in a C#/3.5 project which has been running fine. This is until I set the "SSL port" in IIS to 443 and set the "IIS - Directory Security - Secure Communications - Require secure channel (SSL)" option to true. Now, the web reference cannot be updated and I cannot add a new web reference to the web service in that site. When I try to view the service in a browse using just HTTP I get the "This page must be viewed over a secure channel" and when viewed with HTTPS on the front I get "This web page not available." Could someone tell me how to get a Web Reference added using Visual Studio to this secure web service, please? Thanks, Matt.

  What is the best way to survey and detect bad users behavior or attacks like deny of services or exploits on my web app ? I know server's statistics (like Awstats) are very useful for that kind of purpose, specially to see 3XX, 4XX and 5XX errors (here's an Awstats example page) which are often bots or bad intentioned users that try well-known bad or malformed URLs. Is there others (and betters) ways to analyze and detect that kind of attack tentative ? Note : I'm speaking about URL based attacks, not attacks on server's component (like database or TCP/IP).

• What considerations should be made for a web app to be released on a cloud hosted system?

  I have a web app that is primarily a WordPress app, but it pulls content from a Django app, simply by calling a service that uses Django models. My understanding of cloud computing is a bit vague. If the site needs to scale up with short notice, does the cloud provider (Amazon, Rackspace, whomever) simply spin up new instances (copies) of my initially configured server? How is state managed between all of them? Are there any good primers on this subject? It's hard to find much out there without getting caught up in the marketing.

  Hello, We are at a stage where we are considering different Web UI frameworks (most likely component based ones such as GWT, JSF, Wicket, Vaadin, etc). One of the main use cases / constraints is that it must support generating dynamic pages. I.e., the page/form layout and components is stored in a database and is changeable at runtime, and from this pages are generated. We are also going to write static layouts, but that is not the main focus of this question. I thought maybe the user community here can share experiences of different frameworks in this context. Are there differences in ease of implementation and what is suitable?

  Are there any .NET APis that can read/update the system.webServer node in web.config? I know I can do it via reading/parsing the web.config file as xml but that's awkward. To read/update the system.web node in .NET 2 I can use: HttpModulesSection httpModulesSection = (HttpModulesSection)configuration.GetSection("system.web/httpModules"); But is there any API based way of accessing system.web/modules using .NET 2? I have to reference the .NET 2 version of system.web.configuration because I don't know in advance if my web app will be run on a server with .NET 2 or 3.5. So it is limited to .NET 2 API calls only.   Hi, I've a project where one of the requirements is fullfil the "W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 (WCAG 1.0)". I'm now considering wich technology could I use to acomplish it, but I'm a little bit confused. Silverlight would be the easiest way, but I cannot find conclusive information about if silverlight is or isn't compilant. I've seen controls pack done in javascript that looks very nice, like DHTMLX, but again the same problem, I don't know for sure. Besides, I've always read that a website should work wihthout javascript, and use it just for improve the user experience. Thanks.

  Hi all, Googling for the past week, but cannot finally decide which python web framework would be right for me. The web app I'm about to develop would be almost completely "pure" html with js (jQuery). Server side would have to do the following: authentication session management caching web services (almost all the on page data would be pulled with jQuery through web services) secured web services (through some form of authentication; this is for remote accessing some of the web services though other web apps, desktop/mobile applications) If there is a good tutorial/guide/idea for how to do this in Django I would be most thankfull if someone could share it as I already have experience with it. The thing that made me start thinking about other frameworks is Django's built in ORM. I know I could swap it with SQLAlchemy, but wouldn't go down that road if I'm not sure all the rest of the requirements is supported. Thanks all in advance.

  Hi Community, I've only written a few small php web apps and I'm throwing code together right now to allow for users to submit short stories. these stories will display and allow others to vote them up. The winner receives something rather valuable and I'm paranoid people are going to try to manipulate it. Debian / Apache / PHP 5.2 / jquery users are not required to login / authenticate. users can vote multiple stories up but only once for each story Is it as simple as tagging each story with an IP address and not counting other submissions from that IP?   I have a cluster of Ubuntu 12.04 web servers running a lamp stack. All of these servers are connected to a Load Balancer on Amazon Web Services. What I want to be able to do is have a dedicated Ubuntu server that I can update the PHP files on and have the other web servers check with cron to get the updates files from the repository. They don't have to use cron but that was the only thing I could think of, unless there was a way to have the updated repository tell them that it has updated files. And then how to transfer those files. Also if there is a ways for a server to check for updated files when it boots because I am going to be using auto scaling on AWS so when there is an increase in the load and another server gets created I need it to download the updated files from the repository when launched. Not sure how to transfer files from server to server.

  I have Microsoft Visio 2000 SR 1, and recently purchased Microsoft Office Visio Standard 2007 with the understanding (supported by the product info and some other research) that I'd be able to upgrade. However, when I install 2007, it tells me it can't find a previous install of Visio, but... it's right there! Here's the exact message: "Setup can't find a version of Microsoft Office on your computer. If Office is installed on a disk or network share, click the browse button to select the appropriate disk or share... (etc.)" No matter which directory or drive I pick (various Office installs, the old Visio install, various subdirectories) it gives the following message: "The path you have chosen does not point at a qualifying upgradeable product. Click 'Retry' to try again or 'Cancel' to quit setup." Any ideas? This is a legit copy of Visio 2007 (purchased from Amazon) and the copy of Visio 2000 is legit as well. I'm not sure what exactly the installer is looking for that it would consider a "qualifying upgradeable product". A specific file?

I want to manage the few books we have at our company, and I'm looking for applications that provide a simple web interface to: Add new books. Search for books. (Not Required) Place holds on books. My ideal would be something like Delicious Library, but web based and open source. I've looked at Koha (which I could not install), Emilda, which seems to be a dead project (last emails are from 2006 and I could not install it) and VuFind which looks awesome but doesn't provide (or I could not find) an interface to add new records to the library. Any suggestions?

  I'm a Java developer who is looking to put a game on the web. I'm not much of a web or server guy, though, and frankly I seem a little lost at where I should start with putting something on the web. My application works fine on my machine, and I'm sure I can make it work fine on any box I put it on. But the security of that box is pretty important. If I sign up for a standard hosting package (let's say from GoDaddy or something) can I simply tell them "make port 12345 open for communication" and let them handle the rest of the security details? • Redundant Microsoft server solution for small company

  I'm planning to change one server Microsoft SBS 2003 with SharePoint, Exchange and SQL database into something that will provide me with some redundancy and won't be single point of failure. I was thinking to buy 2x exactly the same physical servers and put 2 virtualized servers on HyperV or VMWare on each. Then i would put SharePoint, Exchange and SQL on that 1 physical server (shared onto 2x VM's). I would like 2nd physical server to be exact duplicate of the first one so that when 1st server goes down (for reboot or hw failure), 2nd takes care of everything so that users don't even see anything changed (in terms all their emails, sharepoint stuff is available). My questions are: Will I have to pay for licenses for both servers even thou only one instance of SharePoint, Exchange, SQL will be used at same time? What are proposed solutions to do that? Any additional hardware I would need, any complicated software configuration to be expected to configure such redundancy so that when one physical server goes down 2nd one is taking care of rest? What problems should I expect? This solution is for 60 people. Later on it may or may expand.

• Any way to move Office Starter To-Go to a non-flash drive?

  Microsoft's Office Starter edition has an interesting option to create a portable version on a USB flash drive using the "Microsoft Office Starter To-Go Device Manager". This creates a portable version of the Word and Excel starter editions (limited versions of the normal applications that include ads). This would be great for use in Virtual Machines since it requires no registration and has a perpetual license. But I want to copy the files off of the flash drive and just store them in the VHD. The problem is that it appears when you try to run the office.exe executable from anywhere but the USB drive you get the error "Microsoft Office Starter To-Go cannot be launched because it is installed on an unsupported device." Any ideas what it is objecting to and is there a legal workaround for this? A limited but legal and portable version of Word and Excel is a great idea. But tying it specifically to a USB flash drive seems a bit odd. They don't seem to care how many of those flash drives you create so it's not clear what the restrictions are about.

  We're in the process of creating a shared webhosting infrastructure for our university. Departments within the university can host their sites on this infrastructure. We're thinking of setting up multiple, load balanced web servers attached to shared storage (for web content and Apache config files). There will also be database servers behind these web servers. Does anyone have any other suggestions about this? Any recommendations for an alternative setup? Would having cPanel/WHM/Plesk be a good idea to automate account creation/maintenance?

• Expression web ftp: Stuck at "Listing subsites"

  When I try to use the Expression Web 4 built-in ftp I see the message ""Listing subsites in.." and soon afterward "passive ftp not available". If I switch to active, I get "active ftp not available". There are no subsites. It is a simple directory with one html page. Backend is a normal IIS6 server. FTP to the same IP with other FTP clients works fine! Any idea if Expression web has some specific requirements? It is our own dedicated server. (Please no tips to use another tool, for this specific project Expression Web is a requirement).
