  • Integrated Help - Merged Help Indexes

    If anyone has had more than a couple of Microsoft tools or products installed (or a local install of the MSDN library) side by side, you might have noticed that opening help (hitting F1) or opening, say, SQL Server Books Online causes the help indexes to be re-indexed - this is usually after installing a new product or tool. This can be a really, really time consuming exercise! Does anyone know a way to prevent or opt out of having combined help indexes? At best, even just preventing the reindexing at all?

  • Web.config file permissions

    I would like to lock down the web.config file as much as possible, so that as few accounts as necessary can read the file. I saw the list here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178699.aspx but allowing the Users group read permission on the web.config file seems excessive. Thanks.

  • Windows 8 upgrade to windows 8.1 RTM fails with error code 0x101 - 0x2000C

    I have a MSDN Subscription and downloaded Windows 8.1 RTM today. It fails to install. After mounting the ISO and installing (with a Windows 8.1 Pro product code), selecting "Keep my apps and settings", it copies all installation files, restarts and then bluescreens at around 50%, then rolls back to the previous version. System has 64 GB Memory, Supermicro, Xeon E5-1650, Intel SSD, runs Hyper-V, Windows 8 Pro. What may be causing this and how do I fix it?

  • Forcing IE8 Standards Mode with FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION

    I'm doing this: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2009/03/10/more-ie8-extensibility-improvements.aspx But it's not working. I have "iexplore.exe" set to 8888 (decimal mode) under MACHINE, but it's still coming up documentMode = 5. I thought 8888 was suppose to force IE8 Standards Mode whether you have a doctype or not. What is going on?

    I recently installed Windows 8 from MSDN. I used to install Linux within Windows in my Windows operating systems. But when I tried to install my Ubuntu 10.10 with Wubi installer the option to install with wubi was disabled. Help me to install Ubuntu with Wubi installer on Windows 8 if Windows 8 supports it. If it does not, please recommend any other alternative to Wubi. I use Wubi mainly because I can easily remove the Linux operating system.

    Hi I try to show the Mail Control Panel item in Windows 2008 R2. I only type the Name "Mail" in to the "Show only specified Contol Panel items Properties" in the Group Policy. In Windows 2008 R2 that doesn't work and theres no item in the Control Panel to configure Outlook 2010 Profiles. I already tried with: Mail and Mail(32-bit).     I've got Windows 8 Pro installed (RTM version from MSDN). For an application I use I need to have the speech recognition language set to English - US. The only option I have is English - UK. I have tried going to Language in Control Panel and setting the only language to English - US, however English - UK is still the only option in speech properties. How can I add a language to the Speech Properties?

    Hello, I have Data protection manager (DPM) 2010. I did a backup of my system which has been saved into different partitions. The computer running DPM crashed and is not allowing me to restore the backup. However, i still have all the backups as partitions. How can I restore the multiple protection groups from the physical existing partitions? I have been researching the msdn documentation for a solution, but no luck so far. Thanks for your help

    I have Windows 8 (final, MSDN) on my Macbook Pro Retina. Windows 8's ongoing, continuous tantrum of insisting that it's on a tablet device is causing it to always have a touch keyboard 'icon' on the taskbar. The 'icon' is actually a toolbar and I can temporarily disable it by right clicking the taskbar and DE-selecting it. However, upon rebooting the system, it always insists on coming back and activating itself. How can I permanently disable the touch keyboard toolbar in the taskbar?

In my situation it is a slow USB drive that I use for nightly backup, but I would prefer to use my C drive for the install folder.     We have 2 different locations, and at both site we have multiple domain controllers (Win2008). In our application we use Serverless Binding to execute our LDAP queries http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms677945(v=vs.85).aspx. If we look at de DnsHostName of the LDAP://RootDse on site B we always get the default domain controller of site A. Therefor all LDAP queries go much slower. Is there a way to change the default domain controller per site ?

    If I try to install the Windows 8 RTM Final (from MSDN) on my Macbook Air Mid 2011 using Boot Camp, I get this error: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu I already formatted the disk with NTFS, removed it, reformatted and more... Does anyone know to resolve this error?     I know what the /burnmemory switch does on Windows, but I'd like to understand what Windows is doing under the hood to support it. It's described on msdn as the "amount of memory, in megabytes, that Windows cannot use". Does this mean simply that the kernel does not allow user virtual memory mapping into this area? How is this accomplished in the kernel, and are there other restrictions that the kernel will make when burnmemory is set?

Ideally, I would like to have the same functionality as gpedit.msc, but it is important that the tasks of adding and removing such scripts do not require user interaction and can be done entirely within the context of a script.
