  • Using a wildcard in an update?

    - by Paul Tomblin
I want to go through a table, and change all instances of 'notify4-N' to 'notify5-N', where N is a number from 1-9. Is there a way to do that in SQL? It would be easy in perl, but I'm not sure the customer even has perl on his servers.

  • Is there any benefit to my rather quirky character sizing convention?

    - by Paul Alan Taylor
I love things that are a power of 2. I celebrated my 32nd birthday knowing it was the last time in 32 years I'd be able to claim that my age was a power of 2. I'm obsessed. It's like being some Z-list Batman villain, except without the colourful adventures and a face full of batarangs. I ensure that all my enum values are powers of 2, if only for future bitwise operations, and I'm reasonably assured that there is some purpose (even if latent) for doing it. Where I'm less sure, is in how I define the lengths of database fields. Again, I can't help it. Everything ends up being a power of 2. CREATE TABLE Person ( PersonID int IDENTITY PRIMARY KEY ,Firstname varchar(64) ,Surname varchar(128) ) Can any SQL super-boffins who know about the internals of how stuff is stored and retrieved tell me whether there is any benefit to my inexplicable obsession? Is it more efficient to size character fields this way? Can anyone pop in with an "actually, what you're doing works because ....."? I suspect I'm just getting crazier in my older age, but it'd be nice to know that there is some method to my madness.

  • VS2010 debugger always breaks

    - by Paul Knopf
In VS2010, I set a break point (from the left gutter of the editor) on a line of code. After I removed the break point, the debugger always breaks on that line of code. After starting visual studio, the debugger still breaks at the point. Thanks in advance!

  • VB.NET For Each steps into loop body for an IEnumerable collection! How? Why?

    - by Paul Sasik
This is weird. I have a class that inherits from IEnumrable whose Count property is reporting 0 (zero) elements but the For Each loop steps into the loop body and tries to use the variable where it should just be moving on. My code: On Error Resume Next Dim d As Foo For Each d In fooCollection ' use d and throws an exception Next d Weirder still, every time d is accessed i get an exception thrown in the output window: A first chance exception of type 'System.NullReferenceException' but i'm not stopping on the exception (not in a try/catch block). Is "On Error Resume Next" causing this weirdness? Weirdness found: Per Rowland's and JohnH's comments i checked the Foo class: The GetEnumerator method inside of Foo didn't actually return anything! It had an empty body. That coupled with the On Error Resume Next before the loop caused the havoc! Wow this was ugly. Thanks for the clues guys!

  • JQuery response is null but actual response is not

    - by Paul Petrick
    I'm using JQuery to make an Ajax call. I used a sniffer to catch the response text: {"error_code":0,"message":"SUCCESS","data":{"session_token":"3efd9dde-a839-4e91-9415-4c2f6cba5b7b"}} But the response returned on the success callback is null. Anyone got any ideas? (see jquery code below. Jquery code: $.ajax({ type: "GET", url: "http://184.72.58.99/matchaapi/API/User/Login", data: { email: emailval, password: pwordval, developer_key: devkey }, dataType: "json", cache: false, beforeSend: function(xhr) { xhr.setRequestHeader( "Content-Type", "application/json; charset=utf-8" ); }, success: function(resp) { alert(resp); $("#status p").html(resp.message); }});

  • Adding business logic to a domain class using a getter style method name

    - by Richard Paul
I'm attempting to add a method to a grails domain class, e.g. class Item { String name String getReversedName() { name.reverse() } } When I attempt to load the application using grails console I get the following error: Caused by: org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'sessionFactory':Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is org.hibernate.PropertyNotFoundException: Could not find a setter for property reversedName in class Item ... 18 more It looks like Hibernate is interpreting getReversedName() as a getter for a property, however in this case it is a derived field and hence should not be persisted. Obviously in my actual code the business logic I'm exposing is more complex but it isn't relevant to this question. I want to be able to call item.reversedName in my code/gsps. How can I provide property (getter) access to a method in a Grails domain class without Grails attempting to map it with Hibernate?

  • Better way to kill a Form after the FormClosing event is overridden to hide rather than close?

    - by Paul Sasik
I have a simple Windows Form that hosts property controls at runtime. To keep the window and its contents alive rather than killing it by handling the FormClosing event, cancel the event and simply hide the form. That's fine but at close of the application I need to actually close the window. I implemented the below but it feels kludgey. Is there a simpler, more clever way to handle this situation? (The form's controller calls KillForm explicitly after it receives a closing event from the main window.) Friend Class HostForm Private _hideInsteadOfClosing As Boolean = True Private Sub HostForm_FormClosing(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FormClosingEventArgs) _ Handles Me.FormClosing If _hideInsteadOfClosing Then Me.Hide() e.Cancel = True End If End Sub Public Sub KillForm() _hideInsteadOfClosing = False Me.Close() End Sub End Class

  • Job hopping etiquette

    - by Paul Tomblin
I need to get out of a bad situation at my current work - I like the work, but they've been jerking me around with contract extensions coming at the last minute. I've been offered a job at a different company that doesn't look as interesting, but it's a chance to learn a few technologies I was interested in learning. It's "6 months contract to permanent" - does that mean that if I decide it's hopelessly boring and quit after the 6 month contract period that it won't reflect too badly on me and ruin my reputation in the town? What if I quit earlier than that? Edit I should mention that I don't think there will be one right answer, so rather than accepting one answer, I'm going to vote up the good ones.

  • How to fix error - "@interface interfaceName : someEnumeration" gives error "cannot find interface '

    - by Paul V
How can I solve "cannot find interface declaration 'someEnumeration', superclass of 'interfaceName'" error? What steps will reproduce the problem? Compiling Wsdl2ObjC Targeting groupwise.wsdl file Fixing non-valid file names of output csource code like ".h" + ".m" and objects inside source files Moving up one of the @interface BEFORE it was used futher in code! What is the expected output? Something working What do you see instead? 33 errors. "Inherited" from only 3 similar Inheritances of a typedef enum object by a class. All errors are typical: typedef enum types_StatusTrackingOptions { types_StatusTrackingOptions_none = 0, types_StatusTrackingOptions_None, types_StatusTrackingOptions_Delivered, types_StatusTrackingOptions_DeliveredAndOpened, types_StatusTrackingOptions_All, } types_StatusTrackingOptions; types_StatusTrackingOptions types_StatusTrackingOptions_enumFromString(NSString *string); NSString * types_StatusTrackingOptions_stringFromEnum(types_StatusTrackingOptions enumValue); @interface types_StatusTracking : types_StatusTrackingOptions { ... and here I'm having error "cannot find interface declaration for 'types_StatusTrackingOptions', superclass of 'types_StatusTracking'". What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Wsdl2ObjC - rev 168, OS - Mac OS X 10.6.2, iPhone SDK - 3.2, Simulator - v. 3.1.2 - 3.1.3, wsdl - for GroupWise v.8, NDK released 2008-12-23, wsdl and xsd files are attached. P.S. GroupWise.wsdl + .xsd files could be downloaded from http://code.google.com/p/wsdl2objc/issues/detail?id=99

  • How do I modify the -encoding argument to javac in the Android Ant build system

    - by Paul Butcher
Apologies if this is a stupid question - I'm an Android and Ant newbie. I have utf8 encoded source files that I need to compile with the Android Ant build system. By default, the encoding is set to ascii. I'd be very grateful for a pointer to whatever I need to do to let the build system know that my files are utf8. Incidentally, it works fine if I build in Eclipse, but I need to build from the command line. Thanks!

  • C++ Thread Safe Integer

    - by Paul Ridgway
Hello everyone, I have currently created a C++ class for a thread safe integer which simply stores an integer privately and has public get a set functions which use a boost::mutex to ensure that only one change at a time can be applied to the integer. Is this the most efficient way to do it, I have been informed that mutexes are quite resource intensive? The class is used a lot, very rapidly so it could well be a bottleneck... Googleing C++ Thread Safe Integer returns unclear views and oppinions on the thread safety of integer operations on different architectures. Some say that a 32bit int on a 32bit arch is safe, but 64 on 32 isn't due to 'alignment' Others say it is compiler/OS specific (which I don't doubt). I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on 32 bit machines, some have dual cores and so threads may be executed simultaneously on different cores in some cases and I am using GCC 4.4's g++ compiler. Thanks in advance...

  • Dynamically loading jQuery library from a custom component and ensuring only one instance.

    - by Paul Lucas
Say I have a web component that uses jQuery and I want to distribute it as a packaged component. I need a way to ensure that the jQuery library is available on or after the page loads, but I also want to check that the containing html page, or another unknown component that may reference jQuery hasn't already added the library to the page. At the moment the best example I've seen is this http://www.squidoo.com/load-jQuery-dynamically It would need a little tweaking, but I was wondering if there were any other best practices.

  • Looking for examples of good IDEs to analyze for Form/Report design

    - by Paul Sasik
I am working on a basic form/report designer. Some of the features i'm looking to implement are: Single or multiple selection of objects Alignment of objects (when several are selected) Same-sizing of objects (when several are selected) Moving/dragging of selected object(s) Selected object resizing in eight directions (using object grips) For features and look-and-feel I've analyzed and used a mixture of ideas from: MS Visual Studio 200x (most useful so far) Visio Crystal Reports My question is: Have I overlooked some other IDEs that provide these kinds of features that are better and user-friendlier examples of what to do than others i've looked at? (They don't have to be Microsoft products. That's just what i have ready access to.)

  • Initialising vals which might throw an exception

    - by Paul Butcher
    I need to initialise a set of vals, where the code to initialise them might throw an exception. I'd love to write: try { val x = ... generate x value ... val y = ... generate y value ... } catch { ... exception handling ... } ... use x and y ... But this (obviously) doesn't work because x and y aren't in scope outside of the try. It's easy to solve the problem by using mutable variables: var x: Whatever = _ var y: Whatever = _ try { x = ... generate x value ... y = ... generate y value ... } catch { ... exception handling ... } ... use x and y ... But that's not exactly very nice. It's also easy to solve the problem by duplicating the exception handling: val x = try { ... generate x value ... } catch { ... exception handling ... } val y = try { ... generate y value ... } catch { ... exception handling ... } ... use x and y ... But that involves duplicating the exception handling. There must be a "nice" way, but it's eluding me.

  • greasemonkey: perform GM_xmlhttpRequest() from eval (follow up)

    - by Paul Tarjan
How can you call GM_xmlhttpRequest inside of an eval where you are evaling some complicated code, some of which calls GM_xmlhttpRequest. This is a follow up to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1074236 Here is some sample code: // ==UserScript== // @name Test GM AJAX // ==/UserScript== console = unsafeWindow.console; function fetch(msg) { console.log('fetching: '+msg); GM_xmlhttpRequest({ method: 'GET', url: 'http://google.com', onload: function(responseDetails) { console.log(msg); } }); } function complicated(arg1, arg2) { fetch(arg1 + arg2); } console.log('trying'); var code = 'complicated("Ya", "y!")'; function myEval(code) { eval(code); eval('setTimeout(function(){'+code+'},0)'); eval('setTimeout(fetch,0)'); eval('setTimeout(function(){console.log("here");fetch("cool")},0)'); fetch("BOO"); } myEval(code); which outputs: trying fetching: Yay! fetching: BOO fetching: Yay! fetching: 30 here fetching: cool BOO 30 So the only fetch that worked was the setTimeout(fetch,0) but I need to actually execute the code which includes come complicated code. Any ideas?

  • NServicebus DNS Entry for Machine location

    - by Paul Oakham
Hi Guys, I am trying to use a DNS entry for my NServicebus queue endpoint but no messages are being sent. It works fine when I enter the computer name or an IPAddress. I can ping the record and it resolves correctly so i'm wondering if it is possible to use a DNS record? Here is my config: <MessageEndpointMappings> <!--These are the messages which need to be sent to the BusService --> <add Messages="BusCommon.BusHeartBeatMessage, BusCommon" Endpoint="[email protected]" /> </MessageEndpointMappings> Thanks

  • How to filter Delphi 2010 compiler output (hints)?

    - by Paul-Jan
I'm trying to get rid of some hints(*) the Delphi compiler emits. Browsing through the ToolsAPI I see a IOTAToolsFilter that looks like it might help me accomplish this through it's Notifier, but I'm not sure how to invoke this (through what xxxServices I can access the filter). Can anyone tell me if I´m on the right track here? Thanks! (*) In particular, H2365 about overridden methods not matching the case of the parent. Not so nice when you have about 5 million lines of active code with a slightly different code convention than Embarcadero's. We've been working without hints for months now, and we kinda miss 'm. :-)

  • Linq2SQL InfoMessage

    - by Paul Oakham
Hi, is it possible to access the InfoMessage event handler in a Linq2SQL data context? All of our code uses these messages to display useful information to the end user and since moving to Linq2SQL I cannot figure out how to show these messages. I have checked the connection object of the data context as well as the classes properties with no luck so I'm wondering if it is possible. Thanks in advance.
