• How to get started with Automated Installer in Oracle Solaris 11

- by unixman
Hey all, I am pleased to make this year's Oracle OpenWorld Hands-on Lab exercises available for your review and use. These steps are written to demonstrate Oracle Solaris 11 Deployment technologies and are written with intentions of being usable and applicable well-beyond the 1 hour time-slot-on-a-laptop offered at OpenWorld. If you're at OpenWorld and would like to join the session in-person, it is at 3:30 at the Marriott Marquis, Yerba Buena 14 conference room. Please let me know what you think of these instructions!

• Where can I hire a trustworthy professional PHP programmer?

- by JJ22
I wrote a php application for my website that really needs to work well and be as secure as possible. I'm a novice php programmer, so while my application seems to work well, there may be inefficiencies or security vulnerabilities. I feel that I should have someone look over my code before making the application publicly available, but I'm hesitant to just post it online because it handles some rather sensitive things. Where can I find a competent, trustworthy, and relatively inexpensive php programmer who would be willing to review a few thousand lies of well-commented easy-to-read php code? Thank you!

• A tale of two viewports — part one

Back in November I started complicated research into measuring the widths and heights of variousinteresting elements in mobile browsers. This research kept me occupied for months and months; and frankly I becamea bit afraid of it because the subject is so complicated.Besides, when I re-did some tests in MarchI pretty quickly figured out I’d made some nasty mistakes in my original tests. Back to thedrawing board. However, after a review round by some browser vendors and some rewriting it’s done now.Today...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • What steps should be taken to ensure that an open source database gets ready for production?

- by I_like_traffic_lights
I am considering using GridSQL in a production environment. However, I do have some indications that it is not ready. One is that it got excluded by the offering of EnterpriseDB a while ago, and the forums seem to report a few wrong results and relatively severe bugs. The alternatives to GridSQL, however cost around 100.000$ to buy, so I was thinking to utilize some of this money to ensure that GridSQL gets ready for production. At the same time, I could risk spending 50.000$ and months of work on the development of GridSQL, just to discover that the design was flawed and that a complete rewrite is needed. Then I would have to buy the commercial alternatives to GridSQL and the existence of my startup would be at risk. Question What steps would you take to ensure that there is as little risk as possible that the worst case scenario described above would happen? It is unrealistic that I could do much testing nor code review/coding myself (I am also not the best developer), so please describe where to find the guys that would need to do the work.

• New IDE Features in Visual Studio 2010 for C# Developers

After a quick review of C# language features, lets do the same for the IDE improvements. So, whats in there for C# developers? Generate From Usage This feature greatly improves Visual Studio support for test-driven development (TDD). However, it is useful even if you dont use TDD at all. It might increase your productivity by simply reducing the number of keystrokes and eliminating repetitive typing. For example, now I can write code like this: class Program{ static void...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • What encryption algorithm/package should I use in a betting game type situation?

- by user299648
I have a betting type site where I publish a number (between 0-100) that is encrypted. Then after a period of time, I would review what the number is and prove it with a key to decrypt the encrypted number to prove that I'm not cheating. I also want it to be easily verifiable by an average user. What encryption algorithm/technique/package should I use? I'm no expert on cryptography. There seems to be so many options out there and I'm not sure what to use. python friendly is a plus.

• What would be a good way to request comments?

- by WarpEnterprises
In the project/team I'm working the frequency of comments is a little low. One reason might be that it is not clear to the long-time devs what lines in the code really needs a comment (each part of the project has quite fixed devs). To increase this we plan to let team members review the code and check in "requests for comments", which the main dev of that part should replace with useful comments. Do you think this could work? If "yes": what tags should we use to mark? (e.g. //TODO please comment) Can you think of alternatives for this process? Edit: I appreciate your answers about best practice in commenting and writing code, and I completey agree. But my question targets the cases where refactoring is not an option (not wanting to change working code, not wanting to "accuse" main dev of producing code that needs refactoring,...) - so only more or better comments are an option (at least for this question).

Good day! I recently installed 12.04. I am having a hard time connecting to the Internet using my Sun Broadband Wireless. I installed the 64-bit version. I am from the Philippines. When I plug in my USB stick, it does not show up on the Network Manager/ no new connection can be detected. I try to edit it using Edit Connections but still to no avail. I have tried doing these steps from kenji08, kartonista, and from review-ninja (for this one, I can't seem to get pass the first step.) I hope those information can help.

• Kindle App Available for WP7!

- by D'Arcy Lussier
It’s finally here: the Kindle app for Windows Phone 7! Finally we can have our books on the go as well! It’s not sitting atop the “new” list on the WP7 marketplace though. I had to go to the Books section of the marketplace, and there its set to the top spot of free apps. I’m going to read the next chapter in my current book on it to see what the experience is like. After playing quickly with it, here’s some observations: - You flip pages going left to right, not up and down. No setting to change this if you don’t like it. - Good options for changing font size, background colour, and setting bookmarks. - *No* option for highlighting though. However, previous highlights do show up and you can review notes made in other programs Still, for a free Kindle reader and the ability to catch up on books wherever on the phone, so far so good!

• Testing complex compositions

- by phlipsy
I have a rather large collection of classes which check and mutate a given data structure. They can be composed via the composition pattern into arbitrarily complex tree-like structures. The final product contains a lot of these composed structures. My question is now: How can I test those? Albeit it is easy to test every single unit of these compositions, it is rather expensive to test the whole compositions in the following sense: Testing the correct layout of the composition-tree results in a huge number of test cases Changes in the compositions result in a very laborious review of every single test case What is the general guideline here?

• Ideas for how to structure a developer class/course? [on hold]

- by Andy
Let's say I need to teach a 3-8 week course in programming/development at a technical school (no kids) (regardless of language or technology and the target audience is beginners). I need ideas to make it a awesome class where I : Maximize the students learning and experience Make sure they don't fall a sleep Engage the students Make it exciting! I can always do traditional lecture+exercises and repeat this pattern over and over, but I think this is to old-school. Things I have considered to add to the course are: - Require pair programming - Code-review together with the students I would like suggestions on how to make a modern training class state really awesome?

• Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook

Alas I find my self doing another book review... its not clear to me that I should continue to do that but on this particular book it heads in the right direction. As noted in an earlier post I find the idea of a cook book to be of particular interest and useful in my work with Silverlight. This book has gotten closer then any other to date in building the ideal Silverlight book. Albeit the book does make an attempt to teach Silverlight to some degree but it tends to be more of a reference book,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Custom RoleProvider with MVC 2.0 webconfig

- by Farrell
I have a custom MembershipProvider and a custom RoleProvider. I created the custom MembershipProvider by creating a SimpleMembershipProvider class which implements the MembershipProvider class. After that I changed my web.config and works. So I used the same approach creating a custom RoleProvider. Nothing special, just creating a SimpleRoleProvider class which implements the RoleProvider class. But then when I changed the web.config file and runs the solution I get the following error message: Web.Config <membership defaultProvider="DashboardMembershipProvider"> <providers> <clear/> <add name="SimpleMembershipProvider" type="Dashboard.Web.Controlling.Account.SimpleMembershipProvider" /> </providers> </membership> <roleManager enabled="true" defaultProvider="DashboardRoleProvider"> <providers> <clear/> <add name="DashboardRoleProvider" type="Dashboard.Web.Controlling.Account.DashboardRoleProvider" /> </providers> </roleManager> Configuration Error Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately. Parser Error Message: No parameterless constructor defined for this object. Source Error Line 78: <add name="SimpleRoleProvider" Line 79: type="Dashboard.Web.Controlling.Account.SimpleRoleProvider" /> So I searched the web. And tried on the type attribute, which generates the following errors: Configuration Error Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately. Parser Error Message: Could not load file or assembly 'Dashboard.Web.Controlling.Account' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Source Error: Line 78: <add name="SimpleRoleProvider" Line 79: type="Dashboard.Web.Controlling.Account.SimpleRoleProvider,Dashboard.Web.Controlling.Account" /> Any suggestions on how I would be able to get this CustomRoleProvider working? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Currently, RadEditor has a Preview mode, and i am looking on how to add commenting functionality through context menu or button. The editor is pretty customizable, anyone know is ti possible to be done, any hack ways to accomplish this?

• Sentiment analysis with NLTK python for sentences using sample data or webservice?

- by Ke
I am embarking upon a NLP project for sentiment analysis. I have successfully installed NLTK for python (seems like a great piece of software for this). However,I am having trouble understanding how it can be used to accomplish my task. Here is my task: I start with one long piece of data (lets say several hundred tweets on the subject of the UK election from their webservice) I would like to break this up into sentences (or info no longer than 100 or so chars) (I guess i can just do this in python??) Then to search through all the sentences for specific instances within that sentence e.g. "David Cameron" Then I would like to check for positive/negative sentiment in each sentence and count them accordingly NB: I am not really worried too much about accuracy because my data sets are large and also not worried too much about sarcasm. Here are the troubles I am having: All the data sets I can find e.g. the corpus movie review data that comes with NLTK arent in webservice format. It looks like this has had some processing done already. As far as I can see the processing (by stanford) was done with WEKA. Is it not possible for NLTK to do all this on its own? Here all the data sets have already been organised into positive/negative already e.g. polarity dataset http://www.cs.cornell.edu/People/pabo/movie-review-data/ How is this done? (to organise the sentences by sentiment, is it definitely WEKA? or something else?) I am not sure I understand why WEKA and NLTK would be used together. Seems like they do much the same thing. If im processing the data with WEKA first to find sentiment why would I need NLTK? Is it possible to explain why this might be necessary? I have found a few scripts that get somewhat near this task, but all are using the same pre-processed data. Is it not possible to process this data myself to find sentiment in sentences rather than using the data samples given in the link? Any help is much appreciated and will save me much hair! Cheers Ke
