  • architecture and tools for a remote control application?

    I'm working on the design of a remote control application. From my iPhone or a web browser, I'll send a few commands. Soon my home computer will perform the commands and send back results. I know there are remote desktop apps, but I want something programmable, something simpler, and something that I wrote. My current direction is to use Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) as the message bus. The iPhone places some messages in a queue. My local Java/JRuby program notices the messages on the queue, performs the work and sends back status via a different queue. This will be a very low-volume application. At $1.00 for a million requests (plus a handful of data transfer charges), Amazon SQS looks a lot more affordable than having my own server of any type. And super reliable, that's important for me too. Are there better/standard toolkits or architectures for this kind of remote control? Cost is not a big issue, but I prefer the tons I learn by doing it myself. I'm moderately concerned about security, but doubt it will be a problem. The list of commands recognized will be very short, and only recognized in specific contexts. No "erase hard drive" stuff. update: I'll probably distribute these programs to some other people who want the same function, but who don't have Amazon SQS accounts. For now, they'll use anonymous access to my queues, with random 80-character queue names.

  • Cant access Dell BMC IPMI Over IP

    I have Dell R210 with iDRAC BMC (new name for old BMC). Which is on-board feature with shared NIC (I believe). Server is on colocation and I didnt set it up before sent there... So I asked for the remote hands to setup IPMI Over IP. They enabled it, set the IP and everything. The IP is different than main box IP. Also the box is cabled to NIC1 and the BMC supposed to share it (am I right?) I can see new IP in the Open Server Administrator (installed on the box). I tried Supermicro IPMI tool and I tried Dell ipmish.exe command like this ipmish -ip xxx -u root -p calvin sysinfo gives BMC is not detected What could be wrong? is there a diagnostics tool I can try? It must be something obvious. I just never used things like that before.... P.S. I read something about encryptions key in the Dell docs. But I understand that is for encrypted IPMI 2.0 and ipmish can use IPMI 1.5 without encryption.

    From Excel, I need to open an Access database and run one of the database's macros. I'm using Excel and Access 2007. Here is my code in Excel: Sub accessMacro() Dim appAccess As New Access.Application Set appAccess = Access.Application appAccess.OpenCurrentDatabase "C:\blah.mdb" appAccess.Visible = True appAccess.DoCmd.RunMacro "RunQueries.RunQueries" appAccess.CloseCurrentDatabase End Sub In the Access Database, there is a procedure named RunQueries in a module named RunQueries. Each time I run this, I get the following error: Runtime error '2485': Microsoft Access Office can't find the object 'RunQueries.' I have also tried: appAccess.DoCmd.RunMacro "RunQueries" and I get the same errors message. Any idea how to do this? By the way, I could go into a long explanation about why I need to do this, but let me just say that I've already argued against it, and I have to do it this way (meaning, I have to use Excel as a frontend to open several Access dbs and run their macros).

  • Remotely port forward/launch process or a client-less remote desktop app?

    I have an XP box running Logmein at a remote location behind a linksys router, which was running well for a whole of four days, until we had a power failure. Our ISP gave us a new IP, the machine restarted, and logmein did not autorun (or, at least, it did not automatically sign in), and our service (which may or may not be a Minecraft server with non-backed-up save files) also did not run upon startup. Logmein does not register the new IP (it still displays the old one). I have a DDNS updater service, so I do know the new dynamic address. I have tried using the built in XP remote desktop service, but, as with almost all non-cloud-based remote desktop services, it requires a port forward. Thus, I would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas as to: A: Any way of accessing our router remotely to forward the remote desktop port. I've seen the Remote Management option (forwarding the setup page to port 8080), but I do not have it enabled. I've tried UPnP, but again, the setup page for our router is not forwarded. B: Any way of remotely launching a process that does not require port forwarding (or uses ports 255XX, 18XXX, or 9000.), such as a remote console service built into XP. I realize this is a near impossibility. C: A Way to remotely start logmein, and sign in, which is likely a definite impossibility. Sorry if this is too specific for Stackexchange, or if I've put it into the wrong section (is SuperUser the correct place for this?). Ideas would, again be much appreciated, as shot-in-the-dark-like this may be.

    Now that we have applied an internal to external rule blocking all users access to the internet, other than those users in a whitelist, we have the obvious issue of non authenticated users, not on our domain, i.e.; domain-less guests not being able to access the internet. Other than configuring each machine to use our alternative gateway - which would require a member of IT to be onsite everytime a guest arrives - can this be done through ISA adn AD?

    Hello, I would like to know if there is a way to use Active Directory for Physical Access Control ? Example: All users will have a RFID card or a fingerprint entry registered on the domain (linked to the user name), and I would like to secure the buildings (doorlock, airlock) using this and controlled by Active Directory (ex: authorizing a group to use some doors, disabling the user will make the RFID/Fingerprint ineffective, access logging) Is this possible ?     So I'm working on bringing my company into the 21'st century, with virtual servers, active directory, ADFS, SSO etc. Its a huuuuge project, with a future goal of ISO 27001 cerification. The current question is, does the Direct Access role offered by Server 2012 perform the same role as Forefront Unified Access Gateway 2010 does? I'm sure there are many differences, but my primary concerns are Sharepoint publishing, ADFS proxy, reverse proxy, remote connection, and o365 syncronization.

W access for my_project DENIED to deploy_my_project_ My gitolite.conf repo my_project R = deploy_my_project_111 RW+ = my_name I wonder why git push takes wrong user (deploy_project_111) with read access. This error is float. Twice i had to change rsa key(rsa keys is unchangeble) and restart computer. May be my computer do something wrong.

    I have a database/spreadsheet of information that I need to make a very detailed report from. My knowledge on Access is quite limited so I started doing a mock up of the Report layout in Excel and made this: So from there, I need the information from the data base to be placed in the properly labeled cells. There are over 2500+ entries in the spreadsheet/database, so if creating a report that looks pretty spot on to the one above in access is doable, that might be an easier route.

It would be neat if I could do the following, but I'm on Windows: CustomLog "|/dev/null" common All I get in the error log is "piped log program '/dev/null' failed unexpectedly", although I kinda expected this... Is there a Windows alternative to this or any other way to just disable writing the access log?

  • Requiring SSH-key Login Via PAM From Specific IP Ranges

    I need to be able to access my server (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) from remote sites, but I'd like to worry a bit less about password complexity. Thus, I'd like to require that SSH keys be used for login instead of name/password. However, I still have a lot to learn about security, and having already badly broken a test box when I was trying to set this up, I'm acutely aware of the chance of screwing myself while trying to accomplish this. So I have a second goal: I'd like to require that certain IP ranges (e.g. 10.0.0.0/8) may log in with name/password, but everyone else must use an SSH key to log in. How can I satisfy both of these goals? There already exists a very similar question here, but I can't quite figure out how to get to what I want from that information. Current tactic: reading through the PAM documentation (pam_access looks promising) and looking at /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

  • Cannot access Tomcat application remotely, but can access Apache applications

    I am installing Atlassian's Confluence 4.2 on a clean Ubuntu 12.04 server. Confluence runs on Tomcat 6, and uses PostgreSQL 9.1 as its datastore. I've installed and configured phpPgAdmin to manage PostgreSQL, and Zentyal to manage the server generally. Both these applications use Apache. The problem that I am experiencing is that while I can access phpPgAdmin and Zentyal without problem from a remote PC, I can only access Confluence when running locally (either specified by localhost, IP address or host name). Instead I get an HTTP 502 Connection Failed error. By way of experimentation, I also installed Ajenti, which appears to use lighttpd rather than Apache or Tomcat, and it too works fine when connected to locally, but gives me the same HTTP 502 error when connected to remotely. So applications served from Apache work fine, but applications served from other services do not - does that ring a bell with anyone? It's been over 10 years since I last sysadmin'ed a Linux box, so I'm more than a little rusty!

    I have 3 different windows user groups. Each group needs to have a certain drive mapped, unique to that group. Is there a way to say x group maps to y drive every time they connect? If I put something in their start up, that's a lot of manual work. I am needing something that I have set per user group, if possible. If this is not feasible, is there another option? Recently, I messed up a bit in mysql. I currently don't have a root user, and the users I do have don't have grant access. So, I can create users and all that, but I can't create a root user with super powers. Besides removing and reinstalling mysql, is there a way to grant a user total access in my current situation?

  • Single-port 2600 router with 2900XL switch

    I have a setup, where the single port 2600 router is in port 0/2 in the switch, outside network is on port 0/1, and the rest (0/3-0/24) should be clients for the second network that would be managed by the 2600 router. I configured everything with two VLANs: 100 for outside (0/2-0/24), 200 for inside (0/1-0/2). 0/2 is a trunk port for the two VLANs. The issue that came about is that I can't have two VLANs on at once: software doesn't allow it. Now, I can ping the outside network devices (172.16.7.1, 172.16.7.103), and even google (8.8.8.8) from the router, but not the switch.
