  • How do I exclude an Outlook folder form Windows Search Index in Windows 7?

    I have a pretty big (~30GB) email archive (Outlook + Exchange: .ost file) and I would like to use the Outlook Search Feature (Windows Search technology). I would like to exclude some folders from the indexing (at least the "spam" folder!) but it seems there is no option for that in the standard configurations. Is there any other way (registries, etc) that can I accomplish this? I am using Windows 7 and Outlook 2007. Thanks!

    I recently changed permissions on my external usb drive so users by default dont have read permission. Now i realize i cannot search through the drive. after setting 'everyone' permission to read i could again. How do i set it so everyone does not have read permission except for my username (i hate clicking yes to admin prompt everytime i move a file) and allow the system to search the drive when users are allowed to access those files?

    Let say I have foo.bar domain, and I force the user to use the https over http. The question is as browsers just accept and load the forwarded/new page(when the request for http://foo.bar - https://foo.bar), does the google bot(or other search engines) accept the forwarded page and index the new page and just ignore the old page? in other word, does search engines accept https beside the http? thanks in advance.

  • Find out when a new domain appears in search results

    Does anyone know a way to perform the following: I want to know whenever a new domain starts appearing in the google search results for a particular query. For a given google search query, I'd like to receive an alert whenever a new domain pops up and starts appearing in the search results for that query. Alternatively, it would be great if you could just sort google search results by the age of the domain, making it easy to find new sites. As far as I can tell you can only sort by when the page was "last updated". Is something like this possible? EDIT: Following John's suggestion of Google Alerts. The problem with Google Alerts is that it sends you any new PAGES appearing in the search results, not just new DOMAINS.

  • How can I change a search provider's URL in IE8?

    Now that Google finally allows searching over HTTPS, I switched all my browsers to use https://google.com by default (I documented my effort in my blog). The only browser I couldn't change the URL string in, is IE8. You can either add, remove, or change the priority of a search provider - as far as I've seen. Can anyone suggest a way to change the default search behavior in E8 to go to HTTPS? Thanks.

    I want to make a program/script that will be able to take the data from the excel spreadsheet in column A (for example, "team 123") and search Google and take the first 3 results from Google and put the data into the excel spreadsheet. I don't have that much experience in programming. So what language should I use? I know I have to use REST in the Google custom search API- how would I incorporate this? This might have been done before but all I've been able to find is scripts on how to export all the search results or the number of search results, not the first 3 search results. Thanks.     My problem in the same as described here: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/HE7ak4y92YU When I type a search in the chrome omnibox, after typing enfr [space] chrome replaces it by a search in the history and I end up googling my search prefixed by the keyword : for example, I end up googling "enfr former", instead of translating "former" from engligh into french. (in my case, the search is the folowing name: enfr, keywoard: enfr, search: http://translate.google.fr/#en/fr/%s in the other search engines options) Chrome version: 21.0.1180.89 How do I restore the normal behavior (searching on the specified search engine instead of the default search) ? Update: I have seen that clearing browsing data while I did the search fixes the problem. But I am not sure if it wont reapear.

    I'm trying to speed up my query... select PadID from Pads WHERE (keywords like '%$search%' or ProgramName like '%$search%' or English45 like '%$search%') AND RemovemeDate = '2001-01-01 00:00:00' ORDER BY VersionAddDate DESC I've done some work already, I have a keywords table so I can add ... PadID IN (SELECT PadID FROM Keywords WHERE word = '$search') ... However its going to be a nightmare to split up the words from English45 and ProgramName into a word table. Any ideas ?   • How do I add additional parameters to query string of a Firefox Search Plugin?

    I have just installed the DuckDuckGo add-on in Firefox 11.0, running on XP SP 3. I would like to add additional parameters to the query string. However, any changes I make are not reflected in the query string when doing a search. I found the duckduckgo.xml file at C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Profile Name.default\searchplugins. I opened it up with Notepad++ and added the line for kl=uk-en: <SearchPlugin xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2006/browser/search/" xmlns:os="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/"> <os:ShortName>DuckDuckGo</os:ShortName> <os:Description>Search DuckDuckGo (SSL)</os:Description> <os:InputEncoding>UTF-8</os:InputEncoding> <os:Image width="16" height="16">data:image/x-icon;base64, -Removed to shorten-</os:Image> <os:Url type="text/html" method="GET" template="https://duckduckgo.com/"> <os:Param name="q" value="{searchTerms}"/> <os:Param name="kl" value="uk-en"/> </os:Url> </SearchPlugin> However, the kl=uk-en parameter does not appear in the query string when searching (despite several Firefox restarts).

  • How should I make searching a relational database more efficient?

    This is in the scope of a web application. I have a database which has a few nested relations. There is a feature which depicts the history of a large chain of relations. It is essentially a data analysis feature. The issue is that in order to search, a large object graph must be loaded - the loading time for this object graph is not quick enough to be viable. The problem is that without loading the whole graph it makes searching from a single string nearly impossible. In order to search, explicit fields must be specified and the search data supplied. Is there a design pattern for exposing the data in a way which facilitates a single string search instead of having to explicitly define parameters?

  • Spam link text when searching for company directors' name

    It was brought to my attention that if you search for the name of one of our directors (with the intent to find there profile page on our site) They come up as the first link in most search engines as you would expect but the link text is just pure spam. the three search string I have tested on Google, Bing, Ask, and Yahoo have all returned similar results.   • My parked domain was de-indexed by Google - what to do?

    I have a question about how to handle my domain. In a nutshell, I bought a domain last year from Go Daddy. My intention was to launch a real site with this domain and I have spent the last year working on my site. For the last year, I have been using the default Go Daddy page display for an up and coming site. When I first bought this site, it was indexed by Google - you could search for "alphabanter" and my site would show up on the search result page for Google. Several months ago, it seemed Google de-indexed my domain and if you type "alphabanter," my domain no longer shows up on the list of search results. However, if you search for "www.alphabanter.com", that's the only way it shows up in the search results for Google. Anyways, I am about to launch my site for real. However, I don't quite know if I can get my site back into Google's index. I have a few questions: 1) Was my domain permanently penalized by Google and removed from their index just because it was a parked domain? I don't believe I have done anything abusive other than using the Go Daddy default page for almost a year because my site was not ready. 2) Should I just launch my site, put a few backlinks to my site, and hope that Google indexes my site again? 3) Should I submit my site to Google at Google submit your content I assume getting Google to reconsider my site is the last option if none of the above works.

  • Wordpress blog penalized by Google search - what's wrong?

    I have a blog (http://blog.brodzinski.com), which is wordpress.org blog with pretty popular Thesis theme with almost no other customizations. Some time ago it was penalized by Google search - it simply stopped appearing in search results even for search terms it used to be top result, like my name - Pawel Brodzinski - which isn't anything close to popular search term. To be exact the site has been penalized on Nov 18. It started popping up in search result on Dec 23 but only for a few days. Since Dec 27 it is out again. I know Google guidelines and I'm not aware to break any of them. I submitted reconsideration request after I noticed penalty. It was proceeded and there was no change whatsoever (no surprise as it seems the site was penalized again). I checked diagnostics in webmaster tools and neither any malware was detected nor any strange search terms popped up. I read related threads on Google webmasters forum but found none of solutions working for me. I posted a thread on Google webmasters forum (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=546339f49d4a03bc&hl=en) and the only answer I got was to check for duplicate content. Well, there is some duplicate content published on the web but it is true for vast majority of blogs and it doesn't seem to be a reason for a penalty. Also before Dec 27 I was able to remove duplicate content from a couple of sites which were republishing my feed but this doesn't change the situation - the site was penalized again. The problem is I have no idea what can be wrong with the website or how to find it out. To make the problem worse I'm no webmaster, I just run a wordpress blog, which supposed to be easy.

    I am doing research about backlinks/PR/SEO/Search Result position and all I read about is that PageRank is not important, that it worth before but now it's not important at all. Only thing I found useful about it that is "change Search Result position", but ONLY if there are two sites with same keywords and same text content value, then Search Engine will check which site has higher PR and place that site above lowest one. Google counts PR importance as 20% for displaying search rankings, and Yahoo! is like 3%... Correct me if I am wrong... Is there any other good thing from it?

    Oracle E-Business Proactive Support has created many new guided resolution documents that you may find helpful in resolving issues in your EBS applications.  These new documents are called “Search Helpers” and they guide you through your issue to a solution.  They are meant to be an easy and fast method to finding a relevant, complete solution. Hundreds of notes and service requests were reviewed and the best solutions to these known issues were selected.  For some issues, notes were updated to better clarify the solution.  In other cases, if a note with a solution did not already exist, one was created.   • MySQL – How to Find mysqld.exe with Command Prompt – Fix: ‘mysql’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

    One of the most popular question I get after watching my MySQL courses on Pluralsight is that beginning users are not able to find where they have installed MySQL Server. The error they receive is as follows when they type mysqld command on their default command line. ‘mysql‘ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. This error comes up if user try to execute mysqld command on default command prompt. The user should execute this command where mysql.exe file exists.  If you are using Windows Explorer you can easily search on your drive mysqld.exe and find the location of the file and execute the above command there. However, if you want to find out with command prompt the location of mysqld.exe file you can follow the direction here. Step 1: Open a command prompt Open command prompt from Start >> Run >> cmd >> enter Step 2: Change directory You need to change the default directory to root directory, hence type cd\ command on the prompt to change the default directory to c:\ . Here we are assuming that you have installed MySQL on your c: drive. If you have installed it on any other drive change the drive to that letter. Step 3: Search Drive Type the command dir mysqld.exe /s /p on the command prompt. It will search your directories and will list the directory where mysqld.exe is located. Step 4: Change Directory Now once again change your command prompt file location to the folder where your mysqld.exe is located. In my case it is located here in folder C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin hence I will run following command: cd C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin . Step 5: Execute mysqld.exe Now you can once again mysqld.exe on your command prompt. You can use this method to search pretty much any file with the help of command prompt.   • SQL SERVER – FT_IFTS_SCHEDULER_IDLE_WAIT – Full Text – Wait Type – Day 13 of 28

    In the last few days during this series, I got many question about this Wait type. It would be great if you read my original related wait stats query in the first post because I have filtered it out in WHERE clause. However, I still get questions about this being one of the most wait types they encounter. The truth is, this is a background task processing and it really does not matter and it should be filtered out. There are many new Wait types related to Full Text Search that are introduced in SQL Server 2008. If you run the following query, you will be able to find them in the list. Currently there is not enough information for all of them available on BOL or any other place. But don’t worry; I will write an in-depth article when I learn more about them. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_os_wait_stats WHERE wait_type LIKE 'FT_%' The result set will contain following rows. FT_RESTART_CRAWL FT_METADATA_MUTEX FT_IFTSHC_MUTEX FT_IFTSISM_MUTEX FT_IFTS_RWLOCK FT_COMPROWSET_RWLOCK FT_MASTER_MERGE FT_IFTS_SCHEDULER_IDLE_WAIT We have understood so far that there is not much information available. But the problem is when you have this Wait type, what should you do?  The answer is to filter them out for the moment (i.e, do not pay attention on them) and focus on other pressing issues in wait stats or performance tuning. Here are two of my informal suggestions, which are totally independent from wait stats: Turn off the Full Text Search service in your system if you are  not necessarily using it on your server. Learn proper Full Text Search methodology. You can get Michael Coles’ book: Pro Full-Text Search in SQL Server 2008. Now I invite you to speak out your suggestions or any input regarding Full Text-related best practices and wait stats issue. Please leave a comment. Note: The information presented here is from my experience and there is no way that I claim it to be accurate. I suggest reading Book OnLine for further clarification. All the discussions of Wait Stats in this blog are generic and vary from system to system. It is recommended that you test this on a development server before implementing it to a production server.
