• slow record deletion with large ntext values

  I'm having trouble deleting some records via a stored procedure from a table in SQLServer 2008R2 that has ntext columns. The stored proc is timing out and running the query directly takes a very long time. The initial query was a straight "delete from y where x = z" and I've also tried running it in batches of 1000 with transactions but it is still slow and timing out in a stored proc. The majority of the records in the table will not be deleted each time (it's not just a once-off query but will be run other times). The ntext columns are not used in the where clause and I can't change the column types. Any suggestions on the quickest way to delete records with large ntext values? Thanks

• Slow Client connection blocks Mongrel

  I have a Apache + Haproxy + Mongrel setup for my rails application. When I hit a particular server page, mongrel takes around 100ms to process the request and I get the page in around 5 secs due to data transmission time on my slow home connection. Now I see that during these 5 secs of data transmission, mongrel does not serve any other request. I am surprised as that means mongrel is serving the response html to the client and is blocked till the client receives it. Shouldn't serving response be the job of Apache? This puts serious bottleneck in the no of requests Mongrel can serve as that would depend on the speed of the client connection. Is there any way that html generated by mongrel is served by apache/haproxy or any other web server like nginx? I wonder how the other high traffic sites are managing it?

• Python implementation of avro slow?

  I'm reading some data from avro file using the avro library. It takes about a minute to load 33K objects from the file. This seem very slow to me, specially with the Java version reading the same file in about 1sec. • Why is this postgresql query so slow?

  I'm no database expert, but I have enough knowledge to get myself into trouble, as is the case here. This query SELECT DISTINCT p.* FROM points p, areas a, contacts c WHERE ( p.latitude > 43.6511659465 AND p.latitude < 43.6711659465 AND p.longitude > -79.4677941889 AND p.longitude < -79.4477941889) AND p.resource_type = 'Contact' AND c.user_id = 6 is extremely slow. The points table has fewer than 2000 records, but it takes about 8 seconds to execute. There are indexes on the latitude and longitude columns. Removing the clause concering the resource_type and user_id make no difference. The latitude and longitude fields are both formatted as number(15,10) -- I need the precision for some calculations. There are many, many other queries in this project where points are compared, but no execution time problems. What's going on?

• mdi child forms slow to draw when visibility changed

  My application has the following UI configuration: The main form is an MDI container. Its child forms are attached to a tabstrip. Each user has his set of child forms. Depending on the active user, only that user's child forms are displayed, together with tabs. This is achieved by going through the main form's MdiChildren and setting their Visible property to false/true depending on the active user. This has two undesired effects. One is that every child form gets redrawn in succession, which is ugly and slow. The other is that for some reason the forms go from maximized to normal, effectively undocking them from the main form. Is there any way to display just one of the child forms, such as the one the user was previously looking at, and get the others to stay in the background? The maximize/normal thing is not that big a deal because I can maximize them again manually.

  Hi StackOverflow, I have a Java application that makes heavy use of a large file, to read, process and give through to SolrEmbeddedServer (http://lucene.apache.org/solr/). One of the functions does basic HTML escaping: private String htmlEscape(String input) { return input.replace("&", "&amp;").replace(">", "&gt;").replace("<", "&lt;") .replace("'", "&apos;").replaceAll("\"", "&quot;"); } While profiling the application, the program spends roughly 58% of the time in this function, a total of 47% in replace, and 11% in replaceAll. Now, is the Java replace that slow, or am I on the right path and should I consider the program efficient enough to have its bottleneck in Java and not in my code? (Or am I replacing wrong?) • Single page app with high number of images working extremely slow on iOS8 safari/Webview

  We are working on a WebView (not WKWebView, yet) app, are are observing that the app runs extremely slow on iOS 8. The same app runs smooth on lower versions of OS like iOS7 and iOS6. So we tried it in safari on iOS8 and the performance is similar to iOS6 and 7. The app is filled with images and many are high resolution. While trying to trace the issue (trial and error!) we reduced the sizes and resolutions of the images and the performance improved, but it is still not at par with versions 6 and 7. We are unable to find any such issues reported elsewhere and are stuck. It would be great if we could get some pointers on this one.

• Complex nib is slow to load

  I'm looking for advice about a nib that's very slow to load. It's big and complex, with lots of subviews and doodads. When I fire my UINavController to push it, it's noticeably laggy (maybe almost a second) on my 3G. It sits there with the table cell selected and nothing else happening for long enough to make you wonder if it's broken. I wonder about pre-loading it in another thread while the user is on the previous view. I could probably fire the selector in the background with a delay in the previous view's viewDidAppear, and then keep it in a property until push time comes. Thoughts?

  Hi, I have two tables. they looks like as follows: Id (int) Tags char(128). the column Tags in table A does not have value. It is empty. The column Tags in table B has value. What I want to copy the Tags in table B to corresponding place of table A. the mapping is based on Id. My sql query is: update A INNER JOIN B set A.Tags = B.Tags where A.Id = B.Id There are about 2,000,000 rows in table A, and 50,000 rows in table B. The update seems very slow.... Could anyone tell me how to make it run faster?

  I am using CakePHP 1.2 for building a website. The problem i am facing is when ever a page loads it takes a lot of time in "waiting for www.example.com". The server response time is very slow. First i thot it was my database queries, but they were executing in less than seconds time. Next i also contacted the server people. They told it was not the server. Now i am stuck very badly with "waiting for www.example.com". Is the problem is in coding or the cakePHP is mis configured. Need help badly and fast. Thanks

  Hi, I need to know what can be the main reasons (apart from the basics like grouping CSS selectors, reducing image size, using image sprite etc.) which makes a website slow on Internet Explorer, because my website works fine on the others like FF, chrome etc. Is it the huge use of Javascript framework (ie. jQuery, extjs, prototype)? Is it because of the use of plugins based on JS framework? Should I use core javascript and remove the use of any js framework? Should I try to avoid using jQuery(document).ready()? in case of jQuery framework? Above some of the questions which I know and please answer the questions which I couldn't ask because of lesser knowledge about these.   I have a mysql table "items" with 2 integer fields: seid and tiid The table has about 35000000 records, so it's very large. seid tiid ----------- 1 1 2 2 2 3 2 4 3 4 4 1 4 2 The table has a primary key on both fields, an index on seid and an index on tiid. Someone types in 1 or more tiid values and now I would like to get the seid with most results. For example when someone types 1,2,3, I would like to get seid 2 and 4 as result. They both have 2 matches on the tiid values. My query so far: SELECT COUNT(*) as c, seid FROM items WHERE tiid IN (1,2,3) GROUP BY seid HAVING c = (SELECT COUNT(*) as c, seid FROM items WHERE tiid IN (1,2,3) GROUP BY seid ORDER BY c DESC LIMIT 1) But this query is extremly slow, because of the large table. Does anyone know how to construct a better query for this purpose?

  I am working on large numpy arrays, and some native numpy operations are too slow for my needs (for example simple operations such as "bitwise" A&B). I started looking into writing C extensions to try and improve performance. As a test case, I tried the example given here, implementing a simple trace calculation. I was able to get it to work, but was surprised by the performance: for a (1000,1000) numpy array, numpy.trace() was about 1000 times faster than the C extension! This happens whether I run it once or many times. Is this expected? Is the C extension overhead that bad? Any ideas how to speed things up?

  I have run into a bottleneck when trying to update one of my tables. The player table has, among other things, id, skill, school, weight. What I am trying to do is: SELECT id, skill FROM player WHERE player.school = (current school of 4500) AND player.weight = (current weight of 14) to find the highest skill of all players returned from the query UPDATE player SET starter = 'TRUE' WHERE id = (highest skill) move to next weight and repeat when all weights have been completed move to next school and start over all schools completed, done I have this code implemented and it works, but I have approximately 4500 schools totaling 172000 players and the way I have it now, it would take probably a half hour or more to complete (did not wait it out), which is way too slow. How to speed this up? Short of reducing the scale of the system, I am willing to do anything that gets the intended result. • Vim's autocomplete is excruciatingly slow

  Most of the time the autocomplete feature in VIM works nicely for me, but sometimes it seems to be scanning files which the current file references, and then it becomes painfully slow, sometimes taking several seconds to release focus back to me. Sometimes VIM tells me simply that it is "Scanning" other times, it's saying "Scanning tags" I've only this happen in Ruby files, and it happens mostly when there is a require in the file. My guess would be that this is some kind of feature which checks related files for autocomplete options, but I don't really need that, and would prefer quicker autocomplete.

  Hi, I have heard from many people that usage of templates make the code slow. Is it really true. I'm currently building a library. There are places where if templates are not created, it would result in code management problem. As of now I can think two solutions to this problem: o use #defines o Use templates and define all possible types in the header file/library itself but do not allow end user to make template instances. e.g. typedef Graph GraphI32; etc. Is there anyway, to restrict user from creating various template instances on their own.   This code takes 3 seconds on Chrome and 6s on Firefox. If I write the code in Java and run it under Java 7.0 it takes only 10ms. Chrome's JS engine is usually very fast. Why is it so slow here? btw. this code is just for testing. • .net File.Copy very slow when copying many small files (not over network)

  I'm making a simple folder sync backup tool for myself and ran into quite a roadblock using File.Copy. Doing tests copying a folder of ~44,000 small files (Windows mail folders) to another drive in my system, I found that using File.Copy was over 3x slower than using a command line and running xcopy to copy the same files/folders. My C# version takes over 16+ minutes to copy the files, whereas xcopy takes only 5 minutes. I've tried searching for help on this topic, but all I find is people complaining about slow file copying of large files over a network. This is neither a large file problem nor a network copying problem. I found an interesting article about a better File.Copy replacement, but the code as posted has some errors which causes problems with the stack and I am nowhere near knowledgeable enough to fix the problems in his code. Are there any common or easy ways to replace File.Copy with something more speedy?

• web browsing vs. torrent traffic, and bandwidth priority?

  recently i did download big torrent files. (120 Gb). and i need to seed them back to at least 1.5 ratio. my upload speed is 130 Kb/s max. the problem is that i need to seed them as fast as possible. but i browse the web a lot. and browsing with no upload left, can be very frustrating. I'm looking for something like this, torrent are on max. seeding rate, but when the browser needs the bandwidth, it gets it. priority is to web browser, but when not needed, torrent can be at max. i'm aware that i can change torrent client max speed. but doing it manually everytime and every 5 minutes or so, is hard. Info: i'm using firefox/chrome my torrent client is Ktorrent i'm on 11.10 with unity i do have a router, it's a HAG. and i can't access all it's properties. is this possible even? changing the priority in the system monitor for the applications can do the job?the nice value i mean. is there a way to set priority bandwidth usage for different apps? thank you!

• My C#.NET application is running slower when the exe is located on the network

  Hi, My C#.NET application is running much slower when the exe is located on the network. And I'm talking about everything, even the graphical dispay is slower. For example: when a form is already loaded, if I unplug my network cable and minimize and maximize the window, it takes a very long time to redraw itself. I'm using framework .NET 3.5 SP1. Any idea on the cause? My hypothesis so far: I'm missing some options when building the app? my corporate antivirus checks more stuff because the exe is on the network the cache of Windows XP SP3 doesn't work the same way when the exe is on the network the server is a Novell server: maybe this does change something ? • Visual Web Developer 2005 Express loads very slowly

  I admit that I am not a guru of Visual Studio products at all. I am using Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition and I'm trying to load someone else's project. This project happens to be a website with many pages. After loading VWD, it asks for a project to open and I select the solution file. It then proceeds to take an extremely long time to load. The status bar indicates that references are being loaded, many of which are in the System.Web.* area it seems. It seems like it's going back and forth between some different packages. The loading time is upwards of 20 to 30 minutes or more. Some others have stated that their projects open fine when they go to File Open Website... and choose the project directory from there. Any ideas what the problem could be and how to fix it? Edit: It finally completed loading after an hour approximately.

• Website downloader library

  I need to put a little project together for myself, and I need some functionality to download a page for offline viewing. Is there a library that will download a given page and its embedded images, and edit the img tags to reflect the local locations of the images. I know there are a lot of website downloaders out there, but I cant find something that i can use directly in my code. I have some basic scripts done in python, so Python is very welcome. but pretty much any language will do.
