• Environment variables get lost between MSBuild projects

  Hi, I have a .NET solution containing following projects: web application (WAP) web deployment (WDP, .wdproj) wix setup (WIX, .wixproj) In the WDP I've used a custom MSBuild task (SetEnvVar) to set some env. variables for further use in the build process. After setting them I can use them without prob. in the WDP but in the WIX they are empty/undefined. The strange thing is that when I reference those env. vars in the WIX files (by using properties in .wxs or preproc vars in .wxi) I get the values as expected. Do you have any idea why the env. vars get lost/are undefined in .wixproj? By the way the (solution) build process is triggered from inside VS 2010.

• Need advice on organizing two WPF applications within one Visual Studio solution

  I have a WPF application (KaleidoscopeApplication) organized as follows: Solution (6 projects) Cryptography (DLL) Rfid (DLL) KaleidoscopeApplication (buildable "startup project") Basically, KaleidoscopeApplication contains a bunch of resources (sounds, images, etc) and your standard WPF junk (App.xaml, App.xaml.cs, other xaml and code). I need to create a new application that is very similar to Kaleidoscope, but I'm not sure of the best way to organize. This new app will need access to much of the same code and resources as Kaleidoscope. Preferably, I would like to create a new project in the solution, then simply use the "set as startup project" to pick which app I want to build. However, will I be able to access (share) the Resources folder of Kaleidoscope? I know I will be able to access much of the code if I simply add a reference to the project and include a "using Kaleidoscope". But the resources I'm not so sure about. Is this the right way to organize or am I asking for trouble in the future? Thanks in advance!

• Is there a tool for generating a DSL parser that does not require a runtime for the resultant parser

  I'm doing a lot of work with a DSLs at the moment and was wondering if anyone knew of a tool that could generate a parser for my bnf specification that does not require a run-time library (pure java source parser)? I'm committed to using XTEXT for a future Eclipse plug-in but I need a nice small version for my library itself and don't want to add another jar dependency. It seems that ANTLR requires a run-time to parse files and I performed a Google search with no avail. Can anyone help out? Thanks, Chris

• C++ linking issue on Visual Studio 2008 when crosslinking different projects on same solution

  I'm using Google Test Framework to set some unit tests. I have got three projects in my solution: FN (my project) FN_test (my tests) gtest (Google Test Framework) I set FN_test to have FN and gtest as references (dependencies), and then I think I'm ready to set up my tests (I've already set everyone to /MTd (not doing this was leading me to linking errors before)). Particularly, I define a class called Embark in FN I would like to test using FN_test. So far, so good. Thus I write a classe called EmbarkTest using googletest, declare a member Embark* and write inside the constructor: EmbarkTest() { e = new Embark(900,2010); } Then , F7 pressed, I get the following: 1>FN_test.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol "public: __thiscall Embark::Embark(int,int)" (??0Embark@@QAE@HH@Z) referenced in function "protected: __thiscall EmbarkTest::EmbarkTest(void)" (??0EmbarkTest@@IAE@XZ) 1>D:\Users\lg\Product\code\FN\Debug\FN_test.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals Does someone know what have I done wrong and/or what can I do to settle this?

• How do I check out Eclipse projects from CVS using the command line

  Hi. I'm trying to check out the Mylyn project from Eclipse. However, I can't use Eclipse to check out the projects and am having to do it via the command line. I'm behind a firewall so am basing my attempt on http://wiki.eclipse.org/CVS_Howto#CVS_and_firewalls. I'm not very familiar with CVS. When I run my CVS command, it fails to connect: cvs -td :pserver:[email protected]:443/cvsroot/tools checkout mylyn -> main: Session ID is w4PO5KiMwQmaD6uu -> main loop with CVSROOT=/cvsroot/tools -> safe_location( where=(null) ) -> open_connection_to_server (:pserver:[email protected]:443/cvsroot/tools) -> Connecting to proxy.eclipse.org(206.191.52.48):443. cvs [checkout aborted]: unrecognized auth response from proxy.eclipse.org: SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_4.2 Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? • Can't Add LINQ to SQL classes to projects in VS2010

  I just ran into something in Visual Studio 2010 RC that wasn't previously happening (like, yesterday). No software changes here, but I did run into some muck yesterday when compiling that required a reboot. I am unable to add LINQ to SQL classes to any project through the add dialog. I have created ASP.NET web sites, ASP.NET MVC projects - both of these as 'templated' and as 'empty' - and there appear to be no templates installed or available. I have made sure that the project targets the 4.0 Framework. I can easily add a new database and the ADO.NET entity framework templates are there. As a workaround I can copy a DBML file to my project, delete all tables and sprocs, update the connection string and use the leftover shell (the designer works fine like this), but it's a pain. Has anyone else had their templates drop? Figured out how to reinstall them?

  Hi, I am a recent graduate and am looking to start a career in web development. Its kind of a catch 22 at the moment as I have a fair bit of programming experience from university but not really in web development and to get a job in web development a portfolio is typically required. So, I am looking to start a building a few application in order to have something to show potential employers. Im more into the backend stuff although am just as comfortable with front end development. Does anyone have any thoughts on some potential projects that would be both relatively quick (as i need to get a job soon!) to build but show off enough programming knowlege / skills to be impressive to employers. At the moment i am also learning to use the zend framework and I would hope to find work using such a framework (mvc). My initial thoughts would be things like a webmail app or maybe a custom CMS. Any ideas would be greatley appreciated.

• Multiple Rails versions for multiple projects

  I'd like to use Rails 2.2.2 for one project and Rails 2.3.2 for another. Both are installed. What is rails _2.2.2_ --version supposed to do? I've read that it makes 2.2.2 the working version -- that is, the version that will be used from that point on. But when I check rails --version, I get Rails 2.3.2. So, I also want to know what rails --version tells me; is it just the latest version of Rails that I have or is it the version that will be used for rakes? I know about RVM. Is that the best way to use different versions of Rails on different projects?

• Memory Warning but Small Live Bytes

  Hi everyone, In my application, I get a memory warning of level 1 and then 2 after repeating some action (choosing a picture + processing) several times and then a crash. The leak tool doesn't show any leak. I'm also following the Allocations tool in Instruments and my Live Bytes are roughly 4 MB, overall I allocate 113 MB. At maximum I have maybe 20 MB in memory when the picture is loaded. Since I have to repeat an action to get to the crash, it is very likely to be a memory leak. However, I don't know how to locate it since my live bytes are 4 MB and things supposed to be allocated (apart a small leak of ~100 KB in the UIImagePickerController). How much can I trust the memory leak/allocation tools? Would you have an advice to help me locate the reason of the problem?

• OpenGL: small black pixel on top right corner of texture

  I wrote an uncompressed TGA texture loader and it works nearly perfect, except for the fact that there's just one TINY little black patch on the upper right and it's driving me mad. I can get rid of it by using a texture border, but somehow I think that's not the practical solution. Has anyone encountered this kind of problem before and knows -generally- what's going wrong when something like this happens, or should I post the image-loading function code?   What is the best way to layout a large django project? The tutuorials provide simple instructions for setting up apps, models, and views, but there is less information about how apps and projects should be broken down, how much sharing is allowable/necessary between apps in a typical project (obviously that is largely dependent on the project) and how/where general templates should be kept. Does anyone have examples, suggestions, and explanations as to why a certain project layout is better than another? I am particularly interested in the incorporation of large numbers of unit tests (2-5x the size of the actual code base) and string externalization / templates.

• What format do I use to store a relatively small amount of user data

  I am writing a small program for our local high school (pro bono). The program has an interface allows the user to enter school holidays. This is a simple stand alone Windows app. What format should I use to store the data? A big relational data is obviously overkill. My initial plan was to store the data in an XML file. Co-workers have been suggesting that I use JSON files, Access Databases, SQL Lite, and SQL Server Express. There was even a suggestion of old school INI files.

• VS2005 project has dependency that is not built

  I have VS2005 solution that contains many projects and dependencies (some C++, some C#) - in the past it compiled successfully. when I rebuild all the solution it fails on a project claiming dll is missing (dll that was needed to built before according to dependency). the thing is that from time to time it fails on random project (not all the time the same project). I'm not sure it is meaningful but I see in output console Deleting intermediate and output files for project doesn't VS2005 go according to "Project Build Order" and ReBuild every project starting with its dependencies?

  This may be a silly question, but it may shed some light on how joins work internally. Let's say I have a large table L and a small table S (100K rows vs. 100 rows). Would there be any difference in terms of speed between the following two options?: OPTION 1: OPTION 2: --------- --------- SELECT * SELECT * FROM L INNER JOIN S FROM S INNER JOIN L ON L.id = S.id; ON L.id = S.id; Notice that the only difference is the order in which the tables are joined. I realize performance may vary between different SQL languages. If so, how would MySQL compare to Access?

• Debugging different projects in VS6

  Hi, I have 3 projects in a VS6 workspace. One is the main program, which calls - depending on configuration - one or both other progams. To call the other programs a exe is executed. If I want to debug and set breakpoints in one of the subsequent programs, I get an error that breakpoints could not be set and have been deactivated. Are there any VS6 settings I can check? This is a legacy tool and neither the architecture nor VS6 can be changed. To make things worse I am not very familiar with VS6.

  I'm looking for some recommendations for a python web application. We have some memory restrictions and we try to keep it small and lean. We thought about using WSGI (and a python webserver) and build the rest ourself. We already have a template engine we'd like to use, but we are open for some suggestions regarding the whole request handling (the controller). The application has to run in a single process and the requests have to be processed with multiple threads. We've looked at django, but we are a not sure if it fits into our memory budget.   Our company develop several software products, which reuse each others packages (we use Java). Every product represented as separate Eclipse Java project and has it's own versioning repository (we use Mercurial). When we find a bug in some shared package, we need to transfer changes to all consuming projects, and this is a hell. The key problem is that Eclipse project can be associated only with one versioning repository. Could someone recommend some way to associate Eclipse Java project whith several versioning repositories which in ideal may be geterogeious (svn, git, mercurial) ?

• Visual Studio 2010 - Export (Project) Template menu option grayed out

  In Visual Studio, I want to make a simple C++ project and export it out as a template, so I can use the template to start new projects to save me time. But the Export Template menu option is always grayed out. I've not once been able to click it. Anyone know why? Anyone know how to accomplish what I need (besides the obvious "make a copy of an existing project in explorer")? It seems like project templates should be a no-brainer feature for VS. This seems to be the case for Visual Studio 2005, 2010 (I probably 2008 as well I haven't checked).

• Build Event Macros for Other Projects in the Solution

  Is it possible to reference other projects' properties via a macro within a build event? For example: "Tool1" outputs to directory ..\..\bin\Release "Component1" uses "Tool1" in its post-buildevent To get to "Tool1", "Component1"'s project must do something like $(SolutionDir)bin\Release This requires that Tool1 always output to ..\..\bin\Release. If this is changed this breaks the other project. I know there is no indication to this within the macro list but is there a way to reference another project? Maybe like $(OtherProject.TargetDir)... I know WIX has a similar syntax [$(var.OtherProject.TargetDir)] but I think that may be a different mechanism.

• Setting ownership/permissions for symfony2 and other web projects

  I've been very confused as to how to set permissions and user/groups for my sites. It is particularly one of my weakest suits My curent problem is that I often find myself running into a situation where if i view a particular page, it won't have permissions to write to cache or logs. At this point I'll set the ownership towards apache. Then, in other cases, if i try to run internal scripts, for example, I can't write to these cache/log files because i set them for apache. Currently, my symfony2 files are all registered to me as a part of staff (Handonam:Staff). I've seen various people creating groups such as www-data, apache, etc, and using users such as theirselves (e.g. Handonam) or www as a part of those groups. So my question is: For symfony2 and other web projects, what's generally the best setup for user/group setup so that both apache and myself can interact with these files, while maintaining decent security?
