Best Version control for lone developer

I'm a lone developer at the moment; please share you experiences on what is a good VC setup for a lone developer. My constraints are; I work on multiple machines and need to keep them synced up Sometimes I work offline I'm currently using Subversion(just the client to a remote server), and that is working ok. I'm interested in mecurial and git DVCS, but none of their use-cases make sense to my situation. EDIT: I've migrated my active development to Fossil http://www.fossil-scm.org/ after trialing it with a client. I really like the features to autosync my repositories(reducing accidental forks), the documentation support(both wiki and embedded/versioned) that supports my need to document the code and the project in different spaces, the easy to configure issue tracker, nice access control, skinnable web interface and helpful community.

How to version control config files pragmatically?

Suppose we have a config file with sensitive passwords. I'd like to version control the whole project, including the config file as well, but I don't want to share my passwords. That could be good, if this config file: password=secret foo=bar becomes password=* foo=bar and the other users of the vcs could also set up the password on they own. To ignoring the file isn't a good approach, the developers should be aware, if the config file changes. Example: Local version: password=own_secret foo=bar config file in vcs: password=* foo=bar Then suddenly, the config file changes: password=* foo=bar baz=foo And the local version would become for each developer: password=own_secret foo=bar baz=foo This is my solution. How could I achieve this behaviour? How do you store your config files? Is there a way to do that, or should I hack something?

Table View Page Control Code

Hi Everyone this is what i want to achieve 1) Have a page control that allows user to do a swipe to 6 different pages 2) each page is a table view controller 3) everything is done via code NOT IB The tutorials that are i find either use VIEW CONTROLLER or is done via IB. I am not very good with IB and prefer to have everything done via coding. I have a TableViewController.h and TableViewController.m When the user navigate to the TableViewController view, my application will display a table view (filled with some information), when the user swip to the next page, another page (table view) will appear with another set of information... I am very new to objective-c and iphone programing...can some one pls guide me on how to achieve the above or is there another way to doing things? oh yar....i have a tab bar controller as my root controller...and for one of the tab (tab A) i have a navigation controller and my TableViewControllers falls inside tab A. How to handle concurrency control in dynamic data?

I've been quite impressed with dynamic data and how easy and quick it is to get a simple site up and running. I'm planning on using it for a simple internal HR admin site for registering people's skills/degrees/etc. I've been watching the intro videos at www.asp.net/dynamicdata and one thing they never mention is how to handle concurrency control. It seems that DD does not handle it right out of the box (unless there is some setting I haven't seen) as I manually generated a change conflict exception and the app failed without any user friendly message. Anybody know if DD handles it out of the box? Or do you have to somehow build it into the site?

Microsoft Chart Control labels

Hello, I've been searching for a while and browsing through the samples but could not find a solution to my problem. In Microsoft Chart Control I have created a line series that plots real-time data. As new data points are added, the chart margins will sometimes jump on the form. I have tried disabling the grid lines and have determined that the margins change when the x-axis label overlaps with the y-axis label. I have tried auto-fitting the labels but that does not seem to work probably because it treat x-axis and y-axis separately. Is there any way to prevent the overlap, or keep the labels and corresponding grid lines stationery and just change their value when the data scrolls? Thank you for your help.

Newbie question: Creating a custom control

Hi, I have an ASP.Net site, in which I am using a ListView with a Datapager. Apparently there is a bug with the Datapager, where it crashes if there is an empty ampersand (&) in the querystring. This is a known issue: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=357344&wa=wsignin1.0#tabs I see that there is a workaround given, but did not understand how to implement it. Can somebody point me in the right direction? Also, I see that this issue is marked as resolved. Any idea where I can find the updated version of this control? Wild Thing

How to get cheap version control?

Hello, I'm a programmer, contractor, self experimenter and so on. I'd need to have cheap version control. I've been working with Subversion and recently with Mercurial. I've seen around many cheap hosting but, even if they are great (like BitBucket), many of them don't allow many private projects (1 or 2). Much of the code I need to keep on VC is not open, maybe because it is stuff I'm working on for clients, or maybe because it's code I usually need for my development, but it is not intended and usable as a open source project. Now, I've a cheap web hosting, with unlimited space and free mysql. I CAN'T install Mercurial or SVN on those machinese, but I was asking myself if is it there a way to use a common CVS with it, with "common" I mean something that has its good IDE plugins (Eclipse or Netbeans) that may avoid me to write commands by hand. I am a basic SVN user now trying to learn GIT for a new position. I am trying the usual reading docs and watching videos. However after doing all that I still feel that there is a lot that I do not know. I was wondering if there is a place like project Euler for programming languages, that provides a series of exercises that you can do just to increase your confidence and test your knowledge about a version control system. Something thats generic enough and gets you up to speed with how to do basic things. This could also serve as a comparison point of sorts between multiple VCSs, that would show what things are easy in which VCS. If there is nothing I was planning to document my journey in learning GIT and the create an exercise of this sort.

How to store static content across branches in a single location in version control

[Just a random thought] I have a pdf doc that is downloaded when the user clicks on 'help' on my website. Now, this is a pretty huge document and is saved in version control (SVN) and is thus copied for all branches that exist in SVN. This is static content and something that developers are not working on, and does not change often. Is there a more efficient way to store it (that would not hamper local deployments) that would make SVN checkouts and updates relatively faster. I know the benefit we get is not huge, this is something that came to my head none the less.

When to use Version Control?

I am a lone developer, developing Web Sites/Apps in PHP. I dont work with anybody, I use a framework so I dont create libraries for my apps (most of the time). I have read a lot about Version Control and its benefits, but I dont understand how it would benefit somebody like me. The biggest benefit I can see it having is that if I posted the code on a remote server I could work from anywhere on any computer, but I carry my laptop like I carry my phone so again I dont see much of a reason there. Can somebody please explain to me in a simple manner the reasons for going with a VCS, and give me some good free ones I should try? Are there any hidden benefits/scenarios that you can think of that may sway me in any direction one way or the other. Thanks

Problems after adding Control dynamically on Panel

Hello, I have added an View List onto a Panel like that: panelComponent.Controls.Add(viewListComponent); Everthing works just fine. Mouse Events are handled, Repaint works. But one: I cant dynamically move it around. If i change the control.Top Variablen it just sit there and nothing. Its clued to the top left corner. Resizing the right and bottom line works just fine! I did it without dynamically adding and than no Problem. Hope you can help. Thomas

Proper permission and directoy location for Git Version Control

I am using Git Version Control on an remote server and I have set up a repository that multiple people will be using to push/fetch from. I have put the repo under /srv/subdir/git/.git I have been experiencing problem after problem it seems like. a) Is this location suitable for handling a project that will need to be accessed/modified by multiple developers and a designer? Or is there a better location? b)Do I need to modify the permissions on the subdir/ and git/ directories in order to allow remote access? If I do what is the appropriate permissions I should allow? I know this is a faily long request/question, but unfortunately like many other topics with well covered documentation, documentation does not always cover best practices. I would appreciate anybodies advice and suggestions? Thanks

Propagate properties to parent control C#

Is there any way how to propagate properties from child control into parent - so I can access property like - Parent.Property1 instead of Parent.Child.Property1 ? I cant use inheritance - my parent cant be extended child type - its inherited from different class. Also I dont wanna add code for each property from child to parent like: public object Property1 { get{ return Child.Property1; } set{ ChildProperty1 = value; } } Maybe using reflection - something like this? public PropertyInfo[] Properties { get{ return Child.GetType().GetProperties(); } set{ Child.GetType().GetProperties().SetValue() = value.GetValue()} } Thanks

IIS version control with Mac clients

We are in a unique situation here at work. Most of our websites are on an IIS server, but our developers are on Macs. We need some kind of way to do version control of our websites, but want to manage them locally on our Macs. Is there any way to do this, short of Powershell? Most of our websites are in PHP, so we don't want a solution that is geared toward ASP.NET. Also, I'm not clear if there is a way to use Subversion with IIS. Can someone help me out?

Is there a good Lotus Notes open-source alternative?

At my work we use Lotus Notes 6.5 for our email, meeting scheduling and instant messaging. I can't stand the horrible UI, buggy meeting scheduling and overall '90s feel when using it and would love to replace it with open-source alternatives. So far I've been able to setup Thunderbird for email, and I should also be able to configure pidgin to do IM, but I can't find any replacement for the meeting scheduling. I need to be able to receive meeting requests and respond to them. I've looked around trying to get the Thunderbird plugin Lightning to manage the scheduling, but everything I've read so far requires me to export .ics files from Lotus Notes or otherwise keep Lotus Notes around for day-to-day activities. I've also looked into using Evolution as the client, but I found even less information for it than I did for Thunderbird. How can I easily send, receive and respond to Lotus Notes meetings using an open-source alternative? Alternatively, if there exists a full drop-in replacement to Lotus Notes I would also consider it. Note: My desktop at work is a Windows XP machine, though I wouldn't be opposed to a solution requiring cygwin at this point. Edit: I have no power over the server. I only want a compatible client.

Help A Hacker: Give ‘Em The Windows Source Code

The announcement of another Windows megapatch reminded me of a WikiLeaks story about Microsoft Windows that hasn’t attracted much attention. Alarmingly, we learn that the hackers have the Windows source code to study and test for vulnerabilities. Chinese hackers used the knowledge to breach Google’s accounts and servers: “In 2003, the CNITSEC signed a Government Security Program (GSP) international agreement with Microsoft that allowed select companies such as TOPSEC access to Microsoft source code in order to secure the Windows platform” “CNITSEC enterprises has recruited Chinese hackers in support of nationally-funded "network attack scientific research projects." From June 2002 to March 2003, TOPSEC employed a known Chinese hacker, Lin Yong (a.k.a. Lion and owner of the Honker Union of China), as senior security service engineer…” Windows is widely seen as unsecurable. It doesn’t help that Chinese government-funded hackers are probing the source code for vulnerabilities. It seems odd that people who didn’t write the code can find vulnerabilities faster than the owners of the code. Perhaps the U.S. government should hire its own hackers to go over the same Windows source code and then tell Microsoft how to secure its product?

Farseer Physics Engine and the Ms-PL License

Am I able to produce code for a game which uses the Farseer engine and release my code under an open source license other than the Ms-PL? My concern is with the following section from the license: If you distribute any portion of the software in source code form, you may do so only under this license by including a complete copy of this license with your distribution. If you distribute any portion of the software in compiled or object code form, you may only do so under a license that complies with this license. If I do not include Farseer in my source code distribution does this give me an exemption from this clause as I am not distributing the software? My code merely uses its functions. No where in the license does it force you to provide source code for derivative works or linking works, it simply gives you the option of "if you distribute".

I have a bug in a Linux kernel module that causes the stock Ubuntu 14.04 kernel to oops (crash). That is why I want to edit/patch the source of only that single kernel module to add some extra debug output. The kernel module in question is mvsas and not necessary to boot. SQL SERVER – New Look for CodePlexProject – Hosting for Open Source Software

Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. The quickest way I explain what is codeplex is that I start naming few of the projects which are available there and suddenly I start noticing a few hands going up knowing the projects. This is indirect way to prove that many of us know CodePlex usability but do not pay special attention to what it is actually. Let me name a few popular projects of the CodePlex here. How do I fix these compiler errors in Apple Crunch?

I've been looking around and I finally got the full source code for a game called Apple-Crunch from Google Code. But when I put it into my project, the source code included so many errors in the class files such as: cannot be resolved into a type the constructor is undefined the method method() is undefined for the type Sprite class.java I downloaded the source directly from the command-line and noticed errors popping up on my project. Since I couldn't figure out how to import the actual folder into my workspace (it wouldn't show up on existing projects) I decided to copy and overwrite the folders into the project. The errors were still there so I looked at the class files and noticed that the classes with errors extended from RokonActivity. I then proceeded to add to the libs folder the Rokon library in hopes to fix the errors. Sadly it didn't work and now I don't what to do to fix the errors. How do I fix the errors without having to manually change the code? The source code should be fully functional so why are there errors?

I'm not expecting C# to be on par with say Java or Python in the open source community, but it still surprises me just how far behind it is. 'Multi language' open source repos like google code or github have barely any C# projects in comparison to the other languages I mentioned. I'd like to see C# and .Net shake off that slight corporate feel and move more into the open source arena but I just can't see that happening. I'd be interested to hear peoples opinion on why this might be?
