• how to convert avi (xvid) to mkv or mp4 (h264)

  Very noob when it comes to video. I'm trying to make sense of what I"m finding via Google... but its mostly Greek to me. I have a bunch of Avi files that won't play in my WD TV Play box. Mediainfo tells me they are xvid. Specs for the box show that should be fine... but digging through forums says its hit-and-miss. So I'd like to try converting them to h264 encoded MKV or mp4 files. I gather avconv is the tool, but reading the manual just has me really really confused. I tried the very basic example of: avconv -i file.avi -c copy file.mp4 it took less than 4 seconds. And it worked... sort of. It "played" in that something came up on the screen... but there was horrible artifacting and scenes would just sort of melt into each other. I want to preserve quality if possible. I'm not concerned about file size. I'm not terribly concerned with the time it takes either, provided I can do them in a batch. Can someone familiar with the process please give me a command with the options? Thank you for your help. • Java EE 8 update

  Planning for Java EE 8 is now well underway. As you know, a few weeks ago, we conducted a three part Java EE 8 Community Survey (you can find the final summary here). The data gathered have been very influential for the next steps. You can now expect over the coming weeks and months to see updates on the various specifications that compose the Java EE platform. Some Specification Leads are busy gathering additional feedback regarding what they should focus their efforts on (e.g. CDI 2 survey). Other Specification Leads have already publicly exposed what they think should be one of the focus for the evolution of the specification they lead.  For example, adding Server-Senet Events (SSE) support in JAX-RS is being discussed here and adding MVC support is being discussed here. Please remember that the fact we are now discussing any feature does not insure that it will be included in the proposal, nor in any particular update to Java EE. We can expect additional enhancements, changes and evolutions as we get closer to the finalisation of the different specifications... and there is still a long way to go with these specification proposals! Linda DeMichiel, Java EE Co-Specification Lead, has recently posted a draft proposal for the Java EE 8 Platform specification. Linda's goal is to recruit people and companies supporting this proposal before submitting it to the JCP.  This draft proposal is very interesting reading as it contains relevant information on the plans for Java EE 8 such as : The themes: Support for the latest web standards (eg. HTTP 2.0)  Continue to work on ease of development Improve the infrastructure for cloud support Alignment with Java SE 8 New JSRs to be added to the platform: J-Cache Java API for JSON Binding Java Configuration Plans for the Web Profile Plans on technologies to prune in Java EE 8, ... So if you haven't done it yet, I really encourage you to read the Java EE 8 draft proposal! Our goal for the Java EE 8 specification is for it to be finalized in the second half of 2016. It is important to note that we are in the early days of Java EE 8 and at this stage everything (themes, content, timing, etc.) is preliminary. Everything still needs to be discussed, challenged and agreed within the different Java Community Process (JCP) Experts Groups (EGs). Some EGs that still need to be formed! It could also means that the roadmap will have to be adjusted to follow the progress being made in the different EGs. This is also a good occasion to remind you that participation within those upcoming JCP Experts Groups is encouraged. Contributing in an EG is an effective lever to influence what Java EE 8 will become! Finally, as things get more concrete, we will share details on how to engage in the different Java EE 8 related Adopt-a-JSR initiatives, another way to contribute. You can also read other posts related to Java EE 8, here at The Aquarium blog. • Unable to ping inside or outside network with default gateway 0.0.0.0

  I've been around here before and I could usually piece together everything to more or less get myself up and running, but this time I'm truly stumped. I'm trying to connect my new 14.04 install to a network, and I'm forced to be behind my college's router. Now I've tested the vary cable that is right now plugged into my Ubuntu box on a Windows, Mac OS X, and even my friend's Ubuntu 14.04 box, and they all connect no problem. I've been trying to track this down for about two days, but every time I get close to it, the bug jumps to some other piece of my connection. Anyway, as it sits ifconfig -a gives: eth2 Lninkencap:Ethernet HWaddr:00:1f:bc:08:31:1d inet addr:10.32.51.51 Bcast:10.32.51.155 Mask: 255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 RX bytes:0 TX bytes:0 as well as the local loopback, but I'm assuming that is not an issue here. sudo dhclient -v eth2 returns: Listening on LPF/<hardware address of my integrated NIC, above> Sending on <same> Sending on Socket/fallback DHCPREQUEST of 10.32.51.51 on eth2 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 (xid=0x6f4a66ba) <two more lines of same> DHCPDISCOVER on eth2 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 3 (xid=0x156f9fb4) <many more of above with varying intervals> No DHCPOFFERS received. Trying recorded lease 10.32.51.51 RTNETLINK answers: File exists bound: renewal in <large number> seconds If I then try ping 8.8.8.8, I get: connect: Network is unreachable /etc/resolv.conf only contains the two lines telling you not to edit it, while /etc/network/interfaces only has the loopback interface block in it. I've tried commenting out the "option rfc3442" line in /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf which seemed to fix this issue for many people, as well as adding the line send vendor-class-indentifier "MSFT5.0" to dhclient.conf as well to tell the router I'm a windows box, in case they don't like Linux. Finally, route -n reveals: Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 10.32.51.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth2 I would like to apologize in advance for the doubtless butchered text alignment, but I'm obviously typing this all by hand, reading from the terminal as I type commands. I'm hoping this is an interesting problem, and not something I blithely stumbled past in my (apparent) over-confidence. TIA! Quick addendum before posting: The activity light on the ethernet port are lit and one blinks during boot, but they rarely (and seemingly randomly) do so afterwards (both are dark) even while running dhclient in the foreground. When I had the Ubuntu box tethered to my MacBook earlier, I got what looked like a normal power/uplink blinking pattern, but was unable to ping one from the other.

• JavaOne 2013: (Key) Notes of a conference – State of the Java platform and all the roadmaps by Amis

  Last week’s JavaOne conference provided insights in the roadmap of the Java platform as well as in the current state of things in the Java community. The close relationship between Oracle and IBM concerning Java, the (continuing) lack of such a relationship with Google, the support from Microsoft for Java applications on its Azure cloud and the vibrant developer community – with over 200 different Java User Groups in many countries of the world. There were no major surprises or stunning announcements. Java EE 7 (release in June) was celebrated, the progress of Java 8 SE explained as well as the progress on Java Embedded and ME. The availability of NetBeans 7.4 RC1 and JDK 8 Early Adopters release as well as the open sourcing of project Avatar probably were the only real news stories. The convergence of JavaFX and Java SE is almost complete; the upcoming alignment of Java SE Embedded and Java ME is the next big consolidation step that will lead to a unified platform where developers can use the same skills, development tools and APIs on EE, SE, SE Embedded and ME development. This means that anything that runs on ME will run on SE (Embedded) and EE – not necessarily the reverse because not all SE APIs are part of the compact profile or the ME environment. However, the trimming down of the SE libraries and the increased capabilities of devices mean that a pretty rich JVM runs on many devices – such as JavaFX 8 on the Raspberry PI. The major theme of the conference was Internet of Things. A world of things that are smart and connected, devices like sensors, cameras and equipment from cars, fridges and television sets to printers, security gates and kiosks that all run Java and are all capable of sending data over local network connections or directly over the internet. The number of devices that has these capabilities is rapidly growing. This means that the number of places where Java programs can help program the behavior of devices is growing too. It also means that the volume of data generated is expanding and that we have to find ways to harvest that data, possibly do a local pre-processing (filter, aggregate) and channel the data to back end systems. Terms typically used are edge devices (small, simple, publishing data), gateways (receiving data from many devices, collecting and consolidating, pre-processing, sending onwards to back end – typically using real time event processing) and enterprise services – receiving the data-turned-information from the gateways to further consolidate, distribute and act upon. A cheap device like the Raspberry PI is a perfect way to get started as a Java developer with what embedded (device) programming means and how interaction with physical input and output takes place.   I have data like the following: Both Hour and Count are columns in an excel file. Hour Count 17 79 18 122 19 123 20 142 21 150 22 78 23 15 13 33 14 33 15 40 16 33 17 56 18 46 19 35 20 67 21 65 22 45 23 36 What I want is to create a chart that shows over a period of 1 to 24 (hours) the total count. What's the easiest way to do this. The chart should have a horizontal axis that runs from 1 to 24; and a vertical axis that goes from 0 on up.   Hi, I have a Microsoft Notepad flate file with data and Vertical Bar as column delimiter. I get following message: cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types It seems it is my nvarchar(max) that creates my problem. I changed to varchar(max); but still the same problem. How do I insert my flate file into my SQL Server 2005? And in the SQL Server 2005 import and export wizard the flate file source advanced tab the OutputColumnWith is 50. Will that say my flate file column is max 50? I hope not because my column is more then 50... Thank you, Rune

• Home CAT6 wiring: CMR vs CMP?

  I'm planning on wiring my house with CAT6 cable. I'm finding a large jump in price between CMR and CMP cabling, and I'm confused by what counts as a 'plenum' and what does not. As I'm wiring my house, I'm planning on going through interior (hollow) walls, and through the attic and crawlspace to get to the points I wish to wire. I will be going between floors at one point, which leads me to believe I need at least CMR, and obviously CMP wouldn't hurt either. I don't mind spending the extra money if I need to, but is it overkill going for CMP if the bulk of the wires are either going vertical, or through a crawlspace or attic?

• Horizontal scrolling not working in Windows 7 running on MBP using Boot Camp

  Is there a way to enable horizontal scrolling on Windows installed on a bootcamp partition of MBP 13" Core 2 Duo, using a trackpad? I had a look into the Boot Camp Control panel settings, but could not find a setting that suggested this. I used the Boot Camp drivers that came with the MBP in the Mac OS X Install disk. The vertical scroll is working fine, and the horizontal scroll works fine in the Mac world of things, so the hardware is fine. I think maybe there might be an additional install for a driver that we may have to install? Or any update? Thanks in advance for all your help. :)

• Black screen on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm experiencing some problems. The first thing I noticed is that when I click the Workspace switcher all I get is a black screen (I can guess where the different workspaces are located and clicked on them, not a practical solution though). In addition when I lock the screen or suspend the laptop (a Vaio VPCEB4M1E) I get a shifted screen (I see the right most vertical stripe on the left size of the monitor and nothing about all the rest, to put it clearly I can see the gear that allows me to turn the pc off, etc, but not much more..) when I go to the additional driver menu I see the "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" are installed and the post-release update version is available. I don't know if the problem is driver related, so before doing anything I'd like to get some suggestions from you guys. Thanks you!

  How do I easily switch to an open folder on a mac? In windows, which I'm used to using, I can see all my opened folders in my vertical taskbar, all i need to do to switch to another window is click on the folder in the task bar. There's no taskbar in mac, and when i have a lot of folders opened, ie, lots of finder windows, how can I switch between them? The way i'm doing it is, i put expose on an active corner and switch that way. However that's still damn hard, because first i have to bring up expose, and then find my window. The folders are placed in a random position between opened apps, the folders are not in a list, and on a big screen i have to scan the whole screen in order to find the one i want... etc. Is it really this hard just to switch to a different folder on a mac? :(

• IIS displaying page differently when localhost is used in URL vs. hostname

  I'm having (yet another) strange problem with IIS. When viewing an ASPX page I've designed on my local machine by browsing to http://localhost/page.aspx the page looks as expected (and looks the same in IE, Firefox and Chrome. If I change localhost to my_hostname the page is rendered with a disabled vertical scroll bar. The behavior was first noticed when I published my site to our live server and saw the same discrepancy. After beating my head against the wall I tried what I described above and was able to duplicate my "problem". So with that, I turn to you guys. This wouldn't really be an issue (save for the cross-browser inconsistency) except that this screws up an "absolute"ly positioned <div> moving it partway off the screen instead of being centered like it should be (and is when viewed any other way except in IE when the address is anything but localhost).

• Viewing a large field in a query in SQL management studio with ZOOM?

  Hi there, Can anyone help? I am using SQL management studio (sql server 2008) to run queries and some of the fields that come back are varchar(max) for example and it has a lot of information - Is there a zoom feature to open the window and show me the contents with vertical and horizontal scrollbars? I remember there was, i thought it was F2 but i must have been mistaken as it doesn't work Now i have to scroll horizontal on the field and its really difficult to see everything Also some of the fields contain new line codes etc so it would be great if the zoom feature would display the info using the new line codes etc Any body know how to do this?

• Are animated GIFs supported in Google Chrome?

  I have recently been testing a website and found animated gif images that seem to show fine in IE and Firefox but in Google Chrome they only show briefly and then dissapear! This happens if I view the image on the page or view the file directly. Are there any reported problems in displaying GIFs in Chrome, or is it just being fussy? There seemed to have been some problems in older versions of Chrome, but it's hard to believe something as simple as this wouldn't have been fixed by now. The version of Google Chrome I am using is: 4.1.249.1021 Not sure if this is relevant, but some info about the image: Width: 216 pixels Height: 36 pixels Horizontal resolution: 96dpi Vertical resolution: 96dpi Bit Depth: 32 Frame Count: 3 EDIT: Seems to be a problem relating to the latest beta version of Chrome, as it works fine in 4.0.249

• over Windows terminal change cursor width or color in Vim depending on mode

  I am using PuTTY to connect over SSH to an Ubuntu server from my Windows 7 workstation. Once connected I am using the Vim installation from the Ubuntu server to edit files. I want the cursor to change when I go into and out of insert mode. Part of my .vimrc file is like this but it is not changing the cursor: if &term =~ "xterm" echo "xTerm!!inate!" let &t_SI = "\<Esc>]12;purple\x7" let &t_EI = "\<Esc>]12;blue\x7" endif I know that the if statement is executing because of the echo. EDIT: Actually I would prefer to change the cursor to be a vertical line like you can in the PuTTY settings rather than change the color, or maybe even do both. But just changing the color would be a lot better than nothing. Also I am willing to change terminals if there is another Windows 7 Professionsal 64 bit compatible terminal that can do this (preferably something free). Maybe Poderosa can do this?

• Conky starts above windows in Ubuntu Maverick

  Hey guys, I did not run into this problem until I upgraded my Ubuntu box to Maverick Meerkat (10.10). Basically, whenever I start my computer, conky runs as expected, except it gets drawn over any windows that I load (see screenshot). To fix this for a single session, I simply restart conky by running killall conky; conky in a terminal. Conky gets re-drawn below active windows (namely, only appearing on my desktop), and does not have the border/drop-shadow, but I have to do this every time I start a new session. Is there a simple way to fix this? • Is there a quick way to remove browser decorations

  I'm finding that more and more applications use browsers as their user interface and I am caught in a dilemma. When browsing I want a browser window to have browser buttons, navigation icons, etc. When I'm using the browser for an application like twitter or yammer then I don't need those and having them just reduces the application area. I would rather save the vertical space and have a very sparse undecorated window. The problem is it does not seem easy to do this. My initial thought was to just install two different browsers. For example use Firefox with all the toolbars and then set IE to show no toolbars. I think this is ok but I would like a cleaner solution. Maybe a plugin in Firefox that turns everything off easily or something.

• How can I recover a Fedora 12 installation that is showing signs of disk errors?

  I am currently overseas (i.e., very far from my normal library of tools) and my primary machine that would normally act as the data server in the performance test that we're trying to run is failing to boot to Fedora 12 properly. This is a machine that, as of yesterday, was booting fine. However, this morning, very strange portions of the boot process were complaining with messages such as "unexpected 0x0 in rpcbind" and "bad file descriptor" (I don't have the error in front of me - scavenged a windows installation to get onto serverfault). Eventually, the boot hung for a long time at the NFS service and then brought up what looked like the KDE login screen but neither the mouse nor keyboard functioned. In olden days, I would try to get to a point where I could manage to run fsck and pray that the bad sectors would come back into alignment just long enough for me to scrape the critical data off of the machine. However, now that we live in the future, it seems like our options in situations like this should be a little more varied. Is there a way to recover a Fedora 12 installation with bad disk sectors that won't boot properly? For completeness, I am comfortable working with bootable recovery distros-on-CD and such but I don't know which one is likely to work best with modern Fedora. In the absence of guidance, I'm frantically torrenting the Fedora 12 Live CD and DVD, hoping to try rescue mode before tomorrow morning.

• "Sticky button" configuration under X11/Ubuntu?

  Is there a configuration or app that will enable Sticky-keys like functionality for a pointer button under X11? (On Ubuntu 9.10, FWIW.) To be clear, I'd like a single tap (down/up events) to be treated as a down event, and a following tap to be treated as an up event. Context: I have a trackball with a fourth button that I've mapped to act as horizontal/vertical scroll. This works great. It'd be even better if I didn't have to hold the button down when scrolling.

• Mouse Icon Distorted on Secondary Display

  I have a strange issue with a dual monitor, extended desktop setup where the mouse is always fine on the primary monitor, but sometimes when I move to the secondary display the icon becomes garbled and distorted (sometimes it just looks like a vertical line, instead of a pointer). If I move the mouse back and forth rapidly between primary and secondary displays the level of "garbledness" of the icon will change and sometimes go away completely. If I switch the display settings and set it to "Duplicate Monitor 1" then I end up with a garbled icon on the primary display and an accurate one on the secondary. Very annoying. Computer is Windows 7 Ultimate with an HD8750 and the newest video drivers. Monitors are two Dell 24" displays connected via DVI cables. I have also tried VGA cables.

  I have RoverScan Voyager notebook. It worked good for a few months. But some day I turned it on and saw that it displays badly. I mean, picture that should be displayed by monitor is copied six times and displayed on screen (6 same small pictures, not crossed each other). And the picture itself is bad - it displayed as interchange of vertical lines (it's really hard to see real picture or distinguish some details on it - it is distorted badly). Can you suppose, what's the reason? And what can I do to solve the problem?
