• How to write contents of a rails database to external file

  I'm trying to have rails send the contents of my database to an external textfile. I wanted this done everytime a new user is created. However, when i try to do the following in my user.rb model file, before_save :write_data def write_data() File.open("data.txt", "w") do |myfile| myfile.write(User.all) end end It doesn't write the actual contents of the database, instead, it displays something like this User:0x109858540 Can anyone help?   somehow couldn't find this with a google search, but I feel like it has to be simple...I need to convert a string to a fixed-length byte array, e.g. write "asdf" to a byte[20] array. the data is being sent over the network to a c++ app that expects a fixed-length field, and it works fine if I use a BinaryWriter and write the characters one by one, and pad it by writing '\0' an appropriate number of times. is there a more appropriate way to do this?

• Simple stream read/write question in java

  Hi, I'm trying to upload a file via URLConnection, but i need to read/write it as a binary file without any encoding changes. So i've tried to read byte[] array from FileInputStream, but now i have an issue. The PrintWriter object i use for outputing to the server does not allow me to do writer.write(content) (where content is of type byte[]). How can i fix this? Or is there another way to quickly copy binary data from a FileInputStream to a PrintWriter? Thank you

• How is jQuery so fast?

  Hey, I have a rather large application which, on the admin frontend, takes a few seconds to load a page because of all the pageviews that it has to load into objects before displaying anything. Its a bit complex to explain how the system works, but a few of my other questions explains the system in great detail. The main difference between what they say and the current system is that the customer frontend no longer loads all the pageviews into objects when a customer first views the page - it simply adds the pageview to the database and creates an object in an unsynchronised list... to put it simply, when a customer views a page it no longer loads all the pageviews into objects; but the admin frontend still does. I have been working on some admin tools on the customer frontend recently, so if an administrator clicks the description of an item in the catalogue then the right hand column will display statistics and available actions for the selected item. To do this the page which gets loaded (through $('action-container').load(bla bla bla);) into the right hand column has to loop through ALL the pageviews - this ultimately means that ALL the pageviews are loaded into objects if they haven't been already. For some reason this loads really REALLY fast. The difference in speed is only like a second on my dev site, but the live site has thousands of pageviews so the difference is quite big... So my question is: why is it that the admin frontend loads so slowly while using $(bla).load(bla); is so fast? I mean whatever method jQuery uses, can't browsers use this method too and load pages super-fast? Obviously not as someone would've done that by now - but I am interested to know just why the difference is so big... is it just my system or is there a major difference in speed between the browser getting a page and jQuery getting a page? • Speeding up a soap powered website

  Hi all, We're currently looking into doing some performance tweaking on a website which relies heavily on a Soap webservice. But ... our servers are located in Belgium and the webservice we connect to is locate in San Francisco so it's a long distance connection to say the least. Our website is PHP powered, using PHP's built in SoapClient class. On average a call to the webservice takes 0.7 seconds and we are doing about 3-5 requests per page. All possible request/response caching is already implemented so we are now looking at other ways to improved the connection speed. This is the code which instantiates the SoapClient, what i'm looking for now is other ways/methods to improve speed on single requestes. I need it to also find if there are videos in a certain location on the device that is plugged in then write them to a videos.txt file. Here's what I have and its not working. • Need to change ip address in app.config in runtime without runnning as admin

  Hey guys, There's a lot of post saying how to change info in the app.config and there are posts that say you shouldn't edit info in the app.config but store info in user folders. I understand these topics. But what i want is a combination of both. I have a wcf setup for my client in an app.config, which contains the endpoint address to which it should connect. When The server changes ip, or when a client is installed on a computer in another company, the user should be able to insert another ip-address which should be stored in the app.config. This cannot be stored in a file in appdata or something like that, as the client reads the info in the app.config on startup. How can i write (so remember the new ip-address) in the app.config when the client is installed in program files, the UAC is enabled and the program isn't run as an admin? Thanks in advance.

  Hey, I've been struggling with writing a single string into a file. I'm using just a simple code under Slackware 13: $fp = fopen('/my/absolute/path/data.txt', 'w'); fwrite($fp, 'just a testing string...'); fclose($fp); The file gets created (if it's not already created) but it's empty ?! The directory in which this file is written is owned by apache's user & group (daemon.daemon) and has 0777 permissions. This has never happened to me before.   I have just written out a file: real*8 :: vol_cel real*8, dimension(256,256,256) :: dense [... some operations] open(unit=8,file=fname,form="unformatted") write(8)dense(:,:,:)/vol_cell close(8) dense and vol_cell are real*8 variables. My code to read this in in Matlab: fid = fopen(fname,'r'); mesh_raw = fread(fid,256*256*256,'double'); fclose(fid); The min and max values clearly show that it is not reading it in correctly (Min is 0 and max is a largish positive real*8). min = 3.3622e+38 max = -3.3661e+38 What precision do I need to set in Matlab to make it read in the unformatted Fortran file? A somewhat related question: This Matlab code I am using reads binary files OK but not unformatted files. Though I am generating this new data on my Mac OSX using gfortran. It doesn't recognize form="binary" so I can't do it that way. Do I need to add some library?

  in a webpage I have a link to let the user download file, such as, "showfile.aspx?filename=xxx" in showfile.aspx, I send the file using Response.OutputStream.Write method. now I get some problem when somebody put this webpage in an IFrame and open in IE, as I checked the code, showfile.aspx is requested twice when clicks the link, and in the second time the cookies of authorization and session Id are missing. I tried to add the p3p header but not working. my question is, is this how the IE designed with iframe? is there anyway to work around? thanks.

• Speed of running a test suite in Rails

  I have 357 tests (534 assertions) for my app (using Shoulda). The whole test suite runs in around 80 seconds. Is this time OK? I'm just curious, since this is one of my first apps where I write tests extensively. No fancy stuff in my app. Btw.: I tried to use in memory sqlite3 database, but the results were surprisingly worse (around 83 seconds). Any clues here? I'm using Macbook with 2GB of RAM and 2GHz Intel Core Duo processor as my development machine.

• Avoid read-write access to bad sectors on HDD to continue working on the HDD

  I have a HP Pavilion dv6446 notebook. It had Windows Vista Home premium. After 4.5+ years of usage, just recently it started malfunctioning. While working fine, its screen goes white or sometimes some thin black lines horizontally. Laptop freezes. Hard reboot works. Again it works for some 2 hrs or so, same error. To diagnose I did run the Memory and Hard disk check which is present in the Bios Setup. Memory test passed. Hard disk test returned an error saying something like - "Replace the hard disk". Bad.. Some sectors or platters have gone bad on the disk. (I confirmed this later by further tests mentioned below) Then I tried installing a Ubuntu 11.10. It listed 3 partitions /dev/sda1, sda2, sda2. It again gave error and could not install grub loader on /dev/sda1. Bad sectors. Then redid the Ubuntu installation, this time asked to to install the Ubuntu on /dev/sda3. and kept /dev/sda1 for /home. Installed fine, and works fine as well. Due to unavailability of WiFi/ Ethernet driver for that adapters under Ubuntu( at least I could not configure them and get the networking working at all), I decided to go back to reinstall windows Vista. It did install fine. I did not have to format one data partition which has my data. I just formatted one partition which installed Windows So in effect HDD has not undergone a full format here. Worked ok for 1 day. But same white screen and freeze happened. Looks like while it is in use, it accesses the bad sectors for storing some data and that's when it bombs. I am inclined to think HDD has not failed fully or crashed but has developed bad sectors. Else if it was a HDD crash, it would have refused to boot at all let alone install on it. Questions: Is there any HDD test check under windows or any such tools windows/linux based ewhere which can identify the bad sectors of the HDD and 'lock/isolate' them from further read-write access of any kind. If not what are my options, if any to salvage this laptop HDD without replacing it. EDIT: Would the Disk Error checking tool under windows help in any way?

• System Requirements of a write-heavy applications serving hundreds of requests per second

  NOTE: I am a self-taught PHP developer who has little to none experience managing web and database servers. I am about to write a web-based attendance system for a very large userbase. I expect around 1000 to 1500 users logged-in at the same time making at least 1 request every 10 seconds or so for a span of 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week. So it's more or less 100 requests per second, or at the very worst 1000 requests in a second (average of 16 concurrent requests? But it could be higher given the short timeframe that users will make these requests. crosses fingers to avoid 100 concurrent requests). I expect two types of transactions, a local (not referring to a local network) and a foreign transaction. local transactions basically download userdata in their locality and cache it for 1 - 2 weeks. Attendance equests will probably be two numeric strings only: userid and eventid. foreign transactions are for attendance of those do not belong in the current locality. This will pass in the following data instead: (numeric) locality_id, (string) full_name. Both requests are done in Ajax so no HTML data included, only JSON. Both type of requests expect at the very least a single numeric response from the server. I think there will be a 50-50 split on the frequency of local and foreign transactions, but there's only a few bytes of difference anyways in the sizes of these transactions. As of this moment the userid may only reach 6 digits and eventid are 4 to 5-digit integers too. I expect my users table to have at least 400k rows, and the event table to have as many as 10k rows, a locality table with at least 1500 rows, and my main attendance table to increase by 400k rows (based on the number of users in the users table) a day for 3 days a week (1.2M rows a week). For me, this sounds big. But is this really that big? Or can this be handled by a single server (not sure about the server specs yet since I'll probably avail of a VPS from ServInt or others)? I tried to read on multiple server setups Heatbeat, DRBD, master-slave setups. But I wonder if they're really necessary. the users table will add around 500 1k rows a week. If this can't be handled by a single server, then if I am to choose a MySQL replication topology, what would be the best setup for this case? Sorry, if I sound vague or the question is too wide. I just don't know what to ask or what do you want to know at this point.

• PPTP VPN Not Working - Peer failed CHAP authentication, PTY read or GRE write failed

  Brand-new install of CentOS 6.3. Followed this guide: http://www.members.optushome.com.au/~wskwok/poptop_ads_howto_1.htm And I got PPTPd running [v1.3.4]. I got the VPN to authenticate users against our Active Directory using winbind, smb, etc. All my tests to see if I'm still authenticated to the AD server pass ["kinit -V [email protected]", "smbclient", "wbinfo -t"]. VPN users were able to connect for like . . . an hour. I tried connecting from my Android phone using domain credentials and saw that I got an IP allocated for internal VPN users [which I've since changed the range, but even setting it back to the initial doesn't work]. Then, I have full "Any IP / Any Protocol" open traffic rules between DMZ<--Untrust Zone, and DMZ<--Trust Zone. I'll limit this later to just the authenticating traffic it needs, but for now I think we can rule out the firewall blocking anything.
