• Fix bad blocks on Mac hard disk

  I have a hard disk that I scanned with TechTool and it reports one bad block. As far as I can tell, TechTool only scans and reports a failure. It doesn't fix anything. Back in the day, Norton Disk Doctor did the job of scanning and flagging (remapping) bad blocks on the Mac. Today we have various tools for fixing up HFS+ directory errors (Disk Utility, fsck, DiskWarrior, TechTool), but I don't know of any tool that will do a surface scan and fix the bad blocks too. What software is available for this? If I know the address of the bad block, is there a low-level terminal utility for marking it?

• Active Desktop cannot be restored on Win XP

  This is more of a major annoyance than anything that's stopping me from doing my work, but I somehow seem to have had Active Desktop on my work XP machine get corrupted and now can't get it back working again. I've tried browsing to C:\Documents and Settings\%my-user-name%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and changing, deleting or replacing the Desktop.htt file, but it's not achieving anything. The error I was previously getting when trying to click the "Restore my active desktop" button was: Internet Explorer Script Error An error has occurred in the script on this page. Line: 65 Char: 1 Error: Object doesn't support this action Code: 0 URL: file://C:/Documents%20and%20Settings//Application %20Data/Microsoft/Internet%20Explorer/Desktop.htt Any ideas?

• Ubuntu Studio Audio Issue with Alsa - No sound

  Spec: OS: Ubuntu Studio 13.10 64bit CPU: AMD FX 4100 Quad Core Memory: 6GB DDR3 Video: Radeon HD 4250 (embedded on the mobo) Sound: Delta 66 PCI Issue: I just installed Ubuntu Studio and found out that the streaming audio on a few common website such as Youtube had no sound, and also my CD/DVDs via a player. Thus, in the terminal, I entered: sudo alsa force-reload It actually worked but the sound/audio output was MONO and NOT Stereo (the sources are set to stereo stereo), and it seemed I was not able to locate any settings that can switch the output sound to stereo at all. I went through many forums and eventually "autoremove" pulseaudio since many said I would not be able to utilize both pulseaudio and alsa in this case. Now, I have no audio whatsoever. Does this version of Ubuntu only offer mono sound/audio no matter what I do? Then, I may just need to ditch the whole thing and go back to Windows, which I don't want to since Ubuntu Studio offers many great apps, soundfonts etc.. I have also installed restricted extra, but even after rebooting, it did not resolve the issue. In the terminal mode, I pulled "alsamixer" and unmuted almost everything. But still no sound after a reboot. Just an FYI, I have no saved data under this version of Ubuntu Studio yet, so please feel free to let me know whether I need to install Studio 12.10 instead or mess with some installing/uninstalling apps/plug-ins, etc... If it breaks at some point, all I need to do is to re-install it, which I do not mind at all. Or, if you can provide me a step by step instruction to get this work, I do not mind clean install the Studio 13.10 then wait for your instruction AT ALL!

• How to change the screen resolution in VNC viewer for Ubuntu 12.04 without a monitor?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on a machine and I always use it remotely from VNC. When I have monitor connected to this machine, I can change the resolution of my VNC viewer in the following line: $vnc4server --geometry 1440x900 This worked for me, but I always use this machine remotely, I unplug the monitor and reboot. and the above command line not work anymore. Then I tried xrandr SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh *0 1024 x 768 ( 260mm x 195mm ) *60 Current rotation - normal Current reflection - none Rotations possible - normal Reflections possible - none There is only one option available, so I tried to add a new one. $cvt 1440 900 # 1440x900 59.89 Hz (CVT 1.30MA) hsync: 55.93 kHz; pclk: 106.50 MHz Modeline "1440x900_60.00" 106.50 1440 1528 1672 1904 900 903 909 934 -hsync +vsync $xrandr --newmode "1440x900_60.00" 106.50 1440 1528 1672 1904 900 903 909 934 -hsync +vsync $xrandr --addmode S2 "1440x900_60.00" then I checked with xrandr again and can't see the new mode added. I try to execute the following command and get error says my RandR is too old. $xrandr --output S2 --mode 1440x900_60.00 xrandr: Server RandR version before 1.2 but this does not make sense to me, if I plug in the monitor back and run the xrandr command, it works again! It seems that Ubuntu must conntect to a real monitor before I can change my resolution in my VNC viewer. Can anyone help? UPDATE: Finally I solved this problem by changing to tightvncserver $tightvncserver -geometry 1440x900 works for me. Thanks everything answered my question

• Use pt-table-sync to setup a new MySQL DB

  I have 2 hosts (A and B). B contains a MySQL server with a database called mydb, and A contains a MySQL server with nothing (fresh install). I want to replicate the entire mydb from B to A, by running a script on A (I do not have shell access to B). Can I run this on A: pt-table-sync --execute h=b.mydomain.com,D=mydb h=a.mydomain.com I've read the docs but don't get a 100% comfort feeling (perhaps because of all the warnings about damaging your data if you don't know what you're doing). Will this work? as well, is h=a.mydomin.com necessary? (Will it route all traffic back in/out the local NIC?) can I use localhost or nothing at all?

• Sporadic '.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored' going from OSX -> Linux

  Every now and then when users SSH from their OS X (Snow Leopard) workstation to one of our Linux hosts they receive the message: /usr/bin/xauth: ~/.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored Of course, their X forwarded applications will not work at this point. However, if they log out and log right back in again they do not get the message and everything works as expected. On their Mac they get their home directory via AFP. The Linux machines get it via NFS. Any ideas on what could be going on here?

• Snippets between desktop and laptop

  The Situation: At work, I have a nice beefy desktop running Windows Server 2008 R2 (SharePoint dev machine). My handy ThinkPad is right next to it. Every once in a while I'd like to cut and paste or share something (usually text) between the machines: for example, I might be headed out and I'd like to take send the URL I'm reading from the desktop to the laptop. Of course I can create a share or use the Admin shares and create files to get stuff back and forth, but that seems heavyweight for what I'm thinking of. I'm thinking more along the lines of sending myself an IM. How do you get little things from machine to machine? Keep a shared folder pinned to the taskbar? Send an email to yourself? Bookmark sync? While on it, I'm looking for a decent multiple clipboard handler: maybe these two functions are combined in some nice little utility? I suspect I'm missing something simple here... Thanks... • Complete refresh of the OS - windows 7.

  So, the girlfriend's got a virus, and it's pretty nasty. I don't have the time to mess around with it, and she's not so bad with computers, but this is out of her league. (considering her idea of fixing the problem was to download a virus scan that was malware itself) I think I remember hearing that it's possible to put in some restore/recovery disk that comes with the computer to bring Windows back to the way it was originally right from the factory. The problem is, I bought that computer off the shelf - literally - and I don't think I received a disk, or if I had, it's probably gone now. Do you guys have any idea what I could do? I'm all for reformatting, it's just a toy PC for her. I just don't have a disk to re-install windows 7 with.

• Passwords and Keys in Linux

  In a fit of desperation when I had my wireless connection die on me, I thought it was a problem with the key I had created at the start when I initially configured the wireless connection and hence deleted it. The option to create the key had presented itself when I created the wireless connection. It no longer asks me to. Now I am back online, do I have re-create the password and key I had before? If so, what do I choose and why? The options I have are as follows; PGP Stored password Password keyring Secure shell key The first and last option seem to be obvious and I have no idea about the differences between the second and third options. Why do I need a stored password or password keyring in all scenarios and not just the wireless issue I ran into? EDIT 0 Further to Belisama's comment, I have amended my question. • Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, now available for download

  Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available for general download for almost a week now.  The Beta of SP1 came couple of months back and it did a lot of performance enhancements, added support for HTML5 tags and few other stuff related to web development.  Now, the final release of SP1 is available.  The good part is that, if you had installed the SP1 beta, you don’t have to remove the Beta and start all over again.  You can apply the final release on top of the Beta and it works like a charm. So, in simplified terms, what is new in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Before I start listing it down, I was checking if there was an MSDN article available on this and found http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg442059.aspx  While it reads (Beta), the same holds good for the release candidate as well.  Unlike VS 2008 SP1 and .NET 3.5 SP1 (which came together), this release doesn’t add any new project templates/item templates. However, there are lot of enhancements related to Web Deployment, Debugging and Unit Testing for .NET 3.5 applications. So, how does one find if you are running the correct version of SP1 final release. • How to deal with OpenGL and Fullscreen on OS X

  I do most of my development on OS X and for my current game project this is my target environment. However when I play games I play on Windows. As a windows gamer I am used to Alt+Tab switching from within the game to the last application that was open. On OS X I currently can't find either a game that supports that nor can I find a way to make it possible. My current project is based on SDL 1.3 and I can see that cmd+tab is a sequence that is sent directly to my application and not intercepted by the operating system. Now my first attempt was to hide the rendering window on cmd+tab which certainly works, but has the disadvantage that a hidden OpenGL window in SDL cannot be restored when the user tabs back to the application. First of all, there is no event fired for that or I can't find it, secondly the core problem is that when that application window is hidden, my game is still the active application, just that the window disappeared. That is incredible annoying. Any ideas how to approximate the windows / linux behavior for alt+tab?

• How do I stop apps trying to use a dial-up connection?

  Every now and again, I might have to use a dial-up internet connection via another tethered phone, i.e. Bluetooth connection to the GPRS modem. Now I am back on 'ops normal', i.e. using a shared internet connection on my own phone, or on my 3G stick, but some apps, especially IE9, keep popping up a 'dialup connection' dialogue, which I cannot dismiss enough times ever, to make to stay away. How can I tell these idiot applications that I no longer need a dial-up connection?

• Why do the IP addresses randomly change?

  I have a network with the following: Cable modem with static IP address Router Desktop - Win 7 VM Host - VMware ESXi 4.0 A couple of VM Guests - Windows Every now and then my Win 7 PC is unable to access some of the VMs. When I ping the VMs by their domain name their IP address shows up as the IP address of the cable modem. Sometimes I can fix it by running ipconfig /flushdns. The IP address will reset back to what it was supposed to be, but occasionally it wont work. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

• resolv.conf doesn't get set on reboot when networking is configured for static ip

  I'm experiencing, what appears to be a hostname resolution issue in ubuntu 12.04 server edition when configuring my computer to use a static ip. In /etc/network/interfaces: # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.28 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 Running $ sudo apt-get upgrade, results in a 'Failed to fetch...': . . . W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en_US Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. When I change my /etc/network/interfaces to: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp Everything works fine. Looking into /etc/resolv.conf provides some more hints...In cases where I was getting the resolving issue, resolve.conf was empty. No nameservers were specified. When I changed to dhcp from static and restarted networking. /etc/resolv.conf gets written to: 'nameserver 192.168.1.1'. Switching back from dhcp to static and restarting doesn't remove the nameserve entry. When I restart the system with static set, resolv.conf is empty. When I restart the system with dhcp set, resolv.conf has nameserver 192.168.1.1. So it appears that the issue is that resolve.conf is not getting written to correctly? Which package/code is responsible for writing to resolv.conf? Is there a particular package that I can take a look at open issues? • software RAID array not starting in initramfs on Debian

  One of my Debian servers (kernel 2.6.30-AMD64) refuses to start the software RAID array that houses the root partition in initramfs. It dumps me with a busybox console. When I follow the necessary steps to continue booting it works fine (start the array with mdadm -A and then have LVM scan the volumes with pvscan and then vgchange -ay). I've tried starting with boot options rootdelay=10 to no avail. Also I've updated the initramfs and unpacked it to inspect whether it really tries to assemble the raid array (it does). Output before dumping to console : mount: mounting none on /dev failed: No such device W: devtmpfs not available, falling back to tpmfs for /dev and then some lvm messages saying it can't find the volumes holding the root partitions. Does anybody have a clue how I could fix this?

• Several "SideBySide" errors in the event viewer (Windows XP SP3)

  Hi all, For some reason, my netbook continuously comes up with SideBySide errors in the event viewer under Computer Management. Is there some way to get rid of these errors? My netbook occasionally BSODs and looking back into the event viewer after, at least 8 SideBySide errors were logged prior to BSOD. Please help! Thanks in advance. Netbook is a Samsung N120 with upgraded RAM to 2 GB. EDIT: So, SideBySide errors have been resolved and apparently the BSOD isn't related. But I remember specifically, that last time I had a BSOD, it was due to an "unknown hard error." What causes that?

• Using Subversion with SQL Server Management Studio

  I am a member of a team with 3 developers. We have started using Redmine here for project management and issue tracking and LOVE it. I have seen elsewhere how nicely Redmine can work when a back-end repository is set up for a project. There is nice integration all around. This shop is currently .Net and SQL Server 2005. I am thinking about recommending a move to Subversion for our VCS (so that we can integrate with Redmine). I have seen a product called VisualSVN which will make it possible to use Visual Studio with Subversion, so that covers .Net. But the other big question is if it is possible to configure SQL Server Management Studio to somehow use Subversion for its VCS. Has anyone done this? This shop is currently using Sourcegear Fortress.

  Dear Friends and Colleagues After 8.5 years with Plumtree/BEA/Oracle, it is time for me to move on to something new and exciting. Tomorrow, May 21, will be my last day with Oracle. Prior to joining Plumtree back in 2001, I had not stayed with any one company for more than two years at a time and I really thought that that might be the case with Plumtree even then. However, 8.5 years later, I can definitely say that it has been a great ride with very few regrets. I have made some fantastic friends and have learned something from each and every one of you. I have definitely considered this to be a rewarding experience and I will miss all of you. I do hope that you will keep in contact. You never know, our paths may cross again in the future. • $TERM set to "dumb" causes problems with suspend

  I've just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. So far I love it, everything seems just so much snappier. Now I just have one minor issue. When I try to suspend my laptop, it doesn't work - instead it fades out the screen, blocks it and then instantly wakes back. I've checked the logs in /var/log/pm-suspend.log and this fragment seems relevant: /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/000kernel-change suspend suspend: success. Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: TERM environment variable not set. /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: Returned exit code 1. Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Inhibit found, will not perform suspend Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Running hooks for resume The mentioned script at /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear reads: #!/bin/bash clear When I open a terminal anywhere by hand, $TERM is set to either "linux" or "xterm". However somehow when the 00clear command is executed $TERM is set to "dumb". Two questions: What is the correct value for $TERM when running 00clear script? Where can I set it up? I've looked for solutions on the web, however I could only find information on how to configure $TERM in a regular terminal (and this one is set properly).

• Using SharePoint PeoplePicker control in custom ASP.NET pages

  I was developing custom ASP.NET page for a SharePoint project, and the page uses SharePoint PeoplePicker control. I needed to manipulate the control on the client side based on the user inputs. PeoplePicker Picker is a complex control and the difficult bit is that it contains many controls on the page (use the page source viewer to see the HTML tags generated). So getting into the right bit is tricky and also the default JavaScript functions like, control.disabled; control.focus(); will not work with PeoplePicker control. • I thought the mac mini server also serves as a wifi router?

  I just bought a snow leopard mac mini server, everything came as a bundle pretty nice. The snow leopard server software preinstalled on the mac mini too. Only thing I'm not sure about is does this also act as a wifi router? In the back of the box it says "airport extreme wireless networking included", I assumed this means that this can act as a wifi router like an aiport extreme? Is this true? If so, how do I do it?
