• Cannot flush the DNS on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

  I have an absolutely bizarre problem and it has STUMPED me.. I cannot seem to flush the DNS on my Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have tried sudo dscacheutil -flushcache , i've tried dscacheutil -flushcache and it hasn't worked. I'm building a website, and changed the directories yesterday. Now when I check it on my other machine, it works fine. When I get somewhere from distance to check, it works fine, but it's seemingly stuck in the DNS on this machine as the CSS is not showing. Is there a hard-flush method (if that makes sense)? The two above did not work.

• Excel fonts: Embedding or fallback options?

  I'm working with making a form in Excel instead of Illustrator or InDesign, as I typically do. One of the benefits about working with Adobe (and the subsequent PDFs) is that I control the fonts 100%. This is not the case when I am required to work with an Excel file that'll be passed around. So, is there a way to embed fonts? I'd like to embed Calibri. If not, is there a way to specify a fallback font, such as Tahoma? My thinking is along the lines of a CSS font stack; not sure if there's anything like that in Excel.

• IIS7 is gzipping files but not serving the gzipped version.

  By following a number of helpful blog posts I have configured IIS to gzip my static files. I have even enabled Failed Request Tracing and filtered to the 200 status code, and I can see the successful compression events taking place as well as the finished headers, which look like this: Headers="Content-Type: text/css Content-Encoding: gzip Last-Modified: Mon, 04 Oct 2010 17:35:08 GMT Accept-Ranges: bytes ETag: "02ef37cea63cb1:0" Vary: Accept-Encoding Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET " However, when I test in Fiddler and Firefox the Content-Encoding header is missing, and the file is not gzipped. This is a similar issue to this question which was never resolved. IIS is generating the gzipped files which I can see in C:\inetpub\temp\IIS Temporary Compressed Files . Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this?

  I have a domain in my HOSTS file; www.mytestbusiness.com However, I want to convert some folders into subdomains automatically, e.g. www.mytestbusiness.com/birmingham www.mytestbusiness.com/london which should be: www.birmingham.mytestbusiness.com www.london.mytestbusiness.com Only for some folders do I want to keep it as a domain/folder link, e.g. www.mytestbusiness.com/styles/ I don't want the CSS folder becoming a subdomain, or certain folders like cgi-bin, dwoo etc. (dwoo contains the site templates!) I am running Apache 2.2 on Windows 7 Home Edition, and the site has no issues, it's just creating subdomains in .htaccess without having to manually declare them which is the problem. What's the best way to do this, other than manually declaring them in httpd-vhosts.conf as I used to do? Thanks

It a muti author site where people are engaged in writing posts, comments, updating status etc. According to Google Analytics this month traffic Visitor = 45,764 Pageview = 1,051,186 Visit = 141,447 I have cdn my site, compress the css, used w3 Total cache plugin to optimize my site. Since last month I am getting several down notice from Pingdom. Right now I am facing more down alert than before. And have to restart my site several time to up again. Is my hosting resource is not enough? Do I need more resource? or what could be the solution? Helpful suggestion will be appreciated. Thanks.

  I have moved old version of webpage to some subdirectory: http://www.smth.com/old/. But all resources (images, css, etc.) in HTML are linked with slash symbol at the start. So browser still tries to load them from root path. • Mix content warning on ASPX page

  Hi, We have started receiving the mixed content warning on ASPX pages on our secured site. We do not have any mix content, we load all our JS, Images, CSS and ASPX files using HTTPS. I dont know why we have started receiving these warnings now. The latest thing which we have added is the third party control for Dialog boxes from Essential Object. We are previously using their Menu control but added dialog box recently. Also we have made our application browser compatible. I feel the reason is something between these two points. Can anyone suggest any solution or any workaround if they know any or have used Essential Object controls and faced simililar issue? Essential object is saying it is not their problem. The mix content warning appears any time and not specifically when the Essential Control dialog box popsup, thats why I am bit confused. Any help is highly appriciated. Thanks.

  Alright, so I left my Node.js server alone for a while and came back to find some really interesting stuff in the logs. Apparently some moron from China or Poland tried to hack my server using directory traversal and what not, while it seems though he did not succeed I am unable understand few entries in the log. And, while I looked up the OPTIONS, TRACE and PROPFIND HTTP requests that my server has logged it would be great if someone could explain what exactly was the hacker trying to achieve by using these verbs? Also what in the world does "[90m [32m [90m1ms - 240b[0m" mean? The "ms" makes sense, probably milliseconds for the request, rest I am unable to understand. Thank you!

• options for physical architecture of rails site regarding caching server or cdn

  I have a rails app that is set on a single server currently. On production, I force_ssl for everything. I am interested in using a caching server for images (I'm fine with css and js being served from origin for time being). Would nginx or varnish (which I have no experience with) be a better solution (for October 2012)? I'd imagine that it would be easy to switch these around while still on this single server architecture. Or would something like cloudfront (which I also have no experience with) make sense for hosting image files? I know this is a vague question but appreciate any current feedback. thx in advance

• Font used for attachment title

  When I add an attachment to any document in Word 2010 the font used for the title has changed. I am not talking about adding a caption but the title that is shown automatically as part of the attachment icon: Anything which I attached before today is still showing with the correct font but any new items use a different font. This affects all types of attachments (for example, .msg, .xml, .css). I don't know what I have done to alter the behaviour. How can I change the font back to the default please?

Must be free (F/OSS preferred), Ubuntu (9.10+) compatible, and have per-page permissions. I setup MediaWiki and its fine for internal use but I don't know how, without some severe hackery, how to restrict a client to just view one page and all the images on it and css. I am looking into building a gambling website, I have good HTML CSS and JavaScript skills but I do not know enough of the server side to actually build a backend for a gambling website. Firstly where would you start , what language , I work With Wordpress , so I understand php a little but not a lot . Would php be a good place to start . • Firefox: combine bookmarks toolbar and tabbar

  I am looking for a way to 'minify' the Firefox UI by combining the bookmarks toolbar with the tabbar. The easiest way I could see this done, is by simply moving the Bookmarks left of the tabs on the tabbar. I do not have the knowledge of writing my own userChrome.css styles, but it seems possible to do it this way. Another more difficult way to do this, would be by making it work similar to Windows 7's taskbar. What I mean by this, is to have a bookmark toolbar, and clicking on a bookmark would turn it into a tab, just like clicking an icon in the taskbar in Windows 7 would turn that into a 'program'. Ultimately, it comes down to this: by default, you have two toolbars: a bookmarks toolbar and a tabbar. I would like to combine these into one toolbar.

• Why are browsers so heavy?

  Back in 1998 I had a computer with 233MHz Pentium MMX CPU and a GFX card with no 3D acceleration. It was able to run games like Quake II at a decent FPS rate. My current computer has tons more performance and a mid-class GPU, yet struggles to reach 20 FPS when rendering a single model inside a skybox with WebGL. Even regular pages with lots of 2D CSS animations bring many modern computers to their metaphorical knees. As a web developer I understand there's a lot going on in a web page but not what makes it that heavy. Modern browsers compile JavaScript to CPU native machine code before running it and rendering into a canvas element shouldn't trigger DOM rebuilds so theoretically it should be a lot faster than it is. What am I missing here and is it possible to avoid or minimize whatever is making the browsers slow to build more efficient websites?

• nginx serves broken characters

  I have nginx 1.2.0-1 on debian 6.0.5. I have an empty file (let's say test.css). I add A and newline, works fine, B and newline, works fine,... D, works fine. I add E and I got three broken characters ("???"). When the file has got more content nginx would usually "cache" it and then output the cached file minus some characters plus some of these broken characters. Do you have any idea how to deal with this? Thank you

• How can I change the logo (not the site image) at the top of my SharePoint site?

  I have recently been assigned as a SharePoint Administrator and while I have managed to figure many things out on my own, I seem to be stumped with how to change the logo/text located near the top of the page. I'm not referring to the site image, which is easy to change. I have SharePoint Designer and have mucked my way through various master pages and css files only to end up more confused than when I started. Can anyone, anywhere help me out here? • IIS 7.5 401.3 Access Denied

  I am having this weird issue with IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 x64. I created a site in IIS and manually created a test file index.html and everything worked. When I try to do a deployment, I copy all the files from my local PC to the IIS server, try to access index.html (this is the proper deployed file) and getting 401.3 access denied error. I then try to manually recreate index.html and copy content into this newly created file and the page is accessible again... I just can't figure this out. So the issue is that IIS 7.5 can't server files that have been copied from other PCs. I tried to reset/apply permission settings to the copied folders/files but nothing has worked. Please help. Thanks! By the way, the files that I copied are just some html cutups i.e. generic html, css and image files, nothing special.

• The letter 'W' gets rendered oddly

  It seems that with this particular font (it's one of the Ubuntu fonts; I can't tell which one exactly because Chrome's debugger doesn't tell me which font-family won the CSS battle) the letter 'W' (both cases), at the default zoom level and typically with smaller sizes, will render very oddly: (open the image in a new tab) The right-hand side of the letter is totally wrong. Changing the zoom levels will mitigate (but not eliminate) the issue. Does anyone know how to fix this? It doesn't happen on Firefox or IE so I assume it's not an issue with the font itself.

  IIS allows me to set a MaxConnections value in the configuration. What is unclear (to me anyway) is what that number means exactly, and I can't find a definitive documented answer. Is this the maximum number of clients that connect simultaneously, or is the maximum number of requests that can be running concurrently? For example, if I have a page that loads up some images, CSS files, scripts and content, each of those could reasonably be on a separate request socket with a modern browser. Is each of those sockets counted against the "max", or is it counted only as 1 since they are all requests from the same client address?

Right Click in the query window and select “Query Properties” 3. In The Additional References add reference to Microsoft.WindowsAzure.StorageClient, System.Data.Services.Client.dll and the assembly containing the implementation of the DataServiceContext class tied to the Windows Azure table storage. 4.   Trying to wrap my head around how things are cached on a CDN and it is new territory for me. In the document we received about sending in environment requests, it says "Dynamically-generated content will not benefit much from EdgeSuite". I feel like this is a simplified statement and there has to be a way to make it so you cache dynamically generated content if the tools are configured correctly. The site we are working with runs off a wordpress database, and uses javascript and ajax to build the pages, based on the json objects that php scripts have generated. The process - user's browser this URL, browser talks to edgesuite tools which will have cached certain pre-defined elements, and then requests from the host web server anything that is not cached, once edgesuite has compiled a combination of the two, it sends that information back to the browser. Can we not simply cache all json objects (and of course images, js, css) and therefore the web browser never has to hit the host server's database, at which point in essence, we have cached our dynamic content? Does anyone have any pointers on the most efficient configuration for this type of system -- Akamai/CDN -- to served javascript/ajax/json generated pages that ideally already hit pre-cached json data? Any and all feedback is welcome!
