• Are there any tools to optimize the number of consumer and producer threads on a JMS queue?

  I'm working on an application that is distributed over two JBoss instances and that produces/consumes JMS messages on several JMS queues. When we configured the application we had to determine which threading model we would use, in particular the number of producing and consuming threads per queue. We have done this in a rather ad-hoc fashion but after reading the most recent columns by Herb Sutter in Dr Dobbs (in particular this one) I would like to size our threads in a more rigorous manner. Are there any methods/tools to measure the throughput of JMS queues (in particular JBoss Messaging queues) as a function of the number of producing/consuming threads?

• PDFBox: Problem with converting pdf page into image

  My mission is pretty simple: converting every single page of a pdf file into images. I tried using icepdf open source version to generate the images but they don't generate the image with the correct font. So I start using PDFBox instead. The code is the following: PDDocument document = PDDocument.load(new File("testing.pdf")); List<PDPage> pages = document.getDocumentCatalog().getAllPages(); for (int i = 0; i < pages.size(); i++) { PDPage singlePage = pages.get(i); BufferedImage buffImage = convertToImage(singlePage, 8, 12); ImageIO.write(buffImage, "png", new File(PdfUtil.DATA_OUTPUT_DIR+(count++)+".png")); } The font looks good, but the pictures within the pdf file look fainted out (See the attachment). I look into the source code but I still have no clue how to fix it. Do you guys have any idea what's going on? Please help. Thanks!!

  Hi, I'm new to GWT; I'm building a small sample app. I have several CSS files. I'm able to successfully use the ClientBundle and CssResource to assign styles to the elements defined in my UiBinder script. Now I'd like to take it one step further and introduce CSS constants using @def css-rule. The @def works great when I define a constant and use it in the same CSS file. However I cannot use it in another CSS file. When I try to use the @eval rule to evaluate an existing constant the compiler throws an execption: "cannot make a static reference to the non-static method ". • Why is BorderLayout calling setSize() and setBounds()?

  I'm trying to get my head around proper use of the different LayoutManagers to make my GUI design skills more efficient and effective. For me, that usually requires a detailed understanding of what is going on under the hood. I've found some good discussion of the interaction and consequences of a Container using BorderLayout containing a Container using FlowLayout. I understand it for the most part, but wanted to confirm my mental model and to do so I am looking at the code for BorderLayout. In the code snippet below taken from BorderLayout.layoutContainer(), note the calls to the child Component's setSize() method followed by setBounds(). Looking at the source for these methods of Component, setSize() actually calls setBounds() with the current values for Component.x and Component.y. Why is this done (and not entirely redudant?) Doesn't the setBounds() call completely overwrite the results of the setSize() call? if ((c=getChild(NORTH,ltr)) != null) { c.setSize(right - left, c.height); Dimension d = c.getPreferredSize(); c.setBounds(left, top, right - left, d.height); top += d.height + vgap; } I'm also tring to understand where/when the child Component's size is initially set (before the LayoutManager.layoutContainer() method is called). • Windows Azure local development environment speed

  I've started porting an existing ASP.NET web app to Windows Azure and have noticed that the development process is really slow. Each time I make a change to my code and want to view it, I have to effectively redeploy it to the local dev cloud (using Start debugging (F5) or Start without debugging (Ctrl-F5). The process itself takes over a minute, during which time Visual Studio is completely unresponsive. Am I doing something wrong or is that simply how things are developing for Azure? My specs: Visual Studio 2008 9.0.30729.1 SP 5 projects running on .NET 3.5 SP1 Azure SDK 1.1 (February 2010) Single instance of a single web role Dual-core AMD 64 machine with 8GB RAM, 64-bit Windows 7, fully patched The main project itself is quite large (3k files, ~200k lines) but compiles normally in 10-15 seconds

  Hello everyone, Got a little problem i asked about it before but maybe i didnt ask properly. I have a cocoa application, which amongst other things, must do the following task: - load some images from the disk, store them in an array and display them in a custom view. In the Interface Builder i have a CustomView and an OBJECT that points to TexturesController.h The custom view is a custom class, TextureBrowser. Now , what i need to do is: when loadTextures from the TexturesController is called, after i load the images i want to send this data to the view (TextureBrowser), for example, store it in the NSMutableArray *textures. I tried using the -(void)loadTextureList:(NSMutableArray*)source method from the view, but in the TextureController.m i get a warning : No -loadTextureList method found This is how i call the method : [textureView loadTextureList: textureList]; And even if i run it with the warning left there, the array in the view class doesnt get initialised. Maybe im missing something...maybe someone can give a simple example of what i need to do and how to do it (code). Thanks in advance.

• Python 3, urllib ... Reset Connection Possible?

  In the larger scale of my program the goal of the below code is to filter out all dynamic html in a web-page source code code snippet: try: deepreq3 = urllib.request.Request(deepurl3) deepreq3.add_header("User-Agent","etc......") deepdata3 = urllib.request.urlopen(deepurl3).read().decode("utf8", 'ignore') The following code is looped 3 times in order to identify whether the target web-page is Dynamic (source code is changed at intervals) or not. If the page IS dynamic, the above code loops another 15 times and attempts to filter out the dynamic content. QUESTION: While this filtering method works 80% of the time, some pages will reload ALL 15 times and STILL contain dynamic code. HOWEVER. If I manually close down the Python Shell and re-execute my program, the dynamic html that my 'refresh-page method' could not shake off is no longer there ... it's been replaced with new dynamic html that my 'refresh-page method' cannot shake off. So I need to know, what is going on here? How is re-running my program causing the dynamic content of a page to change. AND, is there any way, any 'reset connection' command I can use to recreate this ... without manually restarting my app. Thanks for your response.

• Glassfish 3: How do I get and use a developers build so I can navigate a stack trace including Glas

  I am migrating a JSF 1.1 application to JEE 6 Web profile, and doing it in steps. I am in the process of moving from JSP with JSF 1.1 to Facelets under JSF 1.2 using the jsf-facelets.jar for JSF 1.2, and received an "interesting" stack trace when trying to lookup a key in a Map using a "{Bean.foo.map.key}" where the stacktrace complained about "key" not being a valid integer. (After code introspection I am workarounding it using a number as the key). That bug is not what this question is about. In such a situation it is essential to be able to navigate the source of every line in the stack trace. In Eclipse I normally attach a source jar to every jar on the build path, but in this particular case the Glassfish server adapter creates a library automatically containing the jars. Also there is to my knowledge no debug build of Glassfish where sources are included in the bundle. Glassfish is a non-trivial Maven project, and a bit picky too. I am not very familiar with maven, but have managed to checkout the code from Subversion and build it for the 3.0 tag according to http://wiki.glassfish.java.net/Wiki.jsp?page=V3FullBuildInstructions#section-V3FullBuildInstructions-CheckoutTheWorkspace - it appears to be the code corresponding to the official released 3.0 version. After finishing the "mvn -U install" part, I have then tried to create Eclipse projects by first using "mvn -DdownloadSources=true eclipse:eclipse" and then import them in Eclipse JEE 3.5.2 and specifying the M2_REPO variable but many of the projects still have compilation errors, and I cannot locate any instructions from Oracle about how to do this. I'd appreciate some help in just getting a functional IDE workspace reflecting the 3.0 version of Glassfish. I have Eclipse 3.5.2, Netbeans 6.8 and 6.9 beta, and IntelliJ IDEA 9, and Linux/Windows/OS X do do it on.

• maven tomcat plugin with mysql driver in $catalina_home/lib

  Hi everybody, i am trying to use a container managed datasource (via context.xml) in tomcat. The corresponding jar file needs to go in $catalina_home/lib, otherwise tomcat can't find it. (not in webapp/WEB-INF/lib, because it is managed by the webserver, not by the application itself) the problem is: I am using maven with the maven-tomcat-plugin, so I don't have a $catalina_home (everything is distributed in my .m2 -repository). So the question is: how can I add the mysql driver jar to the classpath of the tomcat server (mvn tomcat:run)? thanks a lot, gerolf.

  i am having some troubles understanding threads in NVIDIA gpu architecture with cuda. please could anybody clarify these info: an 8800 gpu has 16 SMs with 8 SPs each. so we have 128 SPs. i was viewing stanford's video presentation and it was saying that every SP is capable of running 96 threads cuncurrently. does this mean that it (SP) can run 96/32=3 warps concurrently? moreover, since every SP can run 96 threads and we have 8 SPs in every SM. does this mean that every SM can run 96*8=768 threads concurrently?? but if every SM can run a single Block at a time, and the maximum number of threads in a block is 512, so what is the purpose of running 768 threads concurrently and have a max of 512 threads? a more general question is:how are blocks,threads,and warps distributed to SMs and SPs? i read that every SM gets a single block to execute at a time and threads in a block is divided into warps (32 threads), and SPs execute warps.

• Remote connection to SQL Server Express fails

  I have two computers that share the same Internet IP address. Using one of the computers, I can remotely connect to a SQL Server database on the other. Here is my connection string: SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(@"Data Source=192.168.1.101\SQLEXPRESSNI,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=FirstDB;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=username;Password=password;"); 192.168.1.101 is the server, SQLEXPRESSNI is the SQL Server instance name, and FirstDB is the name of the database. Now, I have another computer with a different Internet IP address. I want to connect to the server above using the third computer that does not belong to my local area network. I dont have access to that third computer at the moment, so I want to use (if possible) the client computer in LAN again. SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(@"Data Source=SharedInternetIP\SQLEXPRESSNI,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=FirstDB;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=username;Password=password;"); Does not work Note that I am a beginner, so I am not quite sure what I am doing even though I know what I want to do. By passing the Internet IP to the SqlConnection object rather than the local IP address, how can I successfully connect to the server computer, using the client computer in the same network? Also note that my ultimate goal is to connect to the server with an external client, but I don't have access to that computer right now. I'd appreciate any help.

• Catching KeyboardInterrupt when working with PyGame

  I have written a small Python application where I use PyGame for displaying some simple graphics. I have a somewhat simple PyGame loop going in the base of my application, like so: stopEvent = Event() # Just imagine that this eventually sets the stopEvent # as soon as the program is finished with its task. disp = SortDisplay(algorithm, stopEvent) def update(): """ Update loop; updates the screen every few seconds. """ while True: stopEvent.wait(options.delay) disp.update() if stopEvent.isSet(): break disp.step() t = Thread(target=update) t.start() while not stopEvent.isSet(): for event in pygame.event.get(): if event.type == pygame.QUIT: stopEvent.set() It works all fine and dandy for the normal program termination; if the PyGame window gets closed, the application closes; if the application finishes its task, the application closes. The trouble I'm having is, if I Ctrl-C in the Python console, the application throws a KeyboardInterrupt, but keeps on running. The question would therefore be: What have I done wrong in my update loop, and how do I rectify it so a KeyboardInterrupt causes the application to terminate?

• Next/Last word with Netbeans in Mac OSX

  I've just switched to Mac OSX from Ubuntu. The development on Mac OSX using Netbeans is really a joy (of hell, though) I don't know how to go to next word, last word using keyboard. In windows or ubuntu, this should be Ctrl+Left/Right, but definely not in Mac. In Mac, such key combinations result in go to begin/end of line. Futhermore, the use of Home and End is for something else, not go to begin/end of line (What a cool hell). Is there another key combination? I prefer default key settings, please. I'm sick of going around with custom script.

  I have a three strings of categories "SharePoint,Azure,IT"; "BizTalk,Finance"; "SharePoint,Finance"; I need to find a way to check if a string contains for example "SharePoint" and "IT", or "BizTalk" and "Finance". The tests are individual strings themselces. How would i loop through all the category strings (1 - 3) and only return the ones which have ALL instances of the souce. i have tried the following function doesExist(source, filterArray) { var substr = filterArray.split(" "); jQuery.each(substr, function() { var filterTest = this; if(source.indexOf(filterTest) != -1 ) { alert("true"); return true; }else { alert("false"); return false; } }); } with little success...the code above checks one at a time rather than both so the results returned are incorrect. • How can I plot a time series graph with Perl?

  I have some data from a database (SQLite), mapping a value (an integer) to a date. A date is a string with this format: YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm. The dates are not uniformly distributed. I want do draw a line graph with the dates on X and the values on Y. What is the easiest way to do this with Perl? I tried DBIx::Chart but I could not make it recognize my dates. I also tried GD::Graph, but as the documentation says: GD::Graph does not support numerical x axis the way it should. Data for X axes should be equally spaced

• recvfrom returns invalid argument when *from* is passed

  I am currently writing a small UDP server program in linux. The UDP server will receive packets from two different peers and will perform different operations based on from which peer it received the packet. I am trying to determine the source from where I receive the packet. However, when select returns and recvfrom is called, it returns with an error of Invalid Argument. If I pass NULL as the second last arguments, recvfrom succeeds. I have tried declaring fromAddr as struct sockaddr_storage, struct sockaddr_in, struct sockaddr without any success. Is their something wrong with this code? Is this the correct way to determine the source of the packet? • Choosing between assembler and COBOL

  I have to rewrite and greatly modify parts of a legacy COBOL application. The COBOL source-code is available (around 100.000 lines of copy & pasted code mixed with GOTOs). Some more details on the system: It is a general management system controlling transactions, bank management, customer data and employees of the company I work for. The COBOL-powered database is about 4 Terabytes distributed over 50 old HDDs. (But messing around with them is the sysadmins job) They are using COBOL85 only. Now I have two options: Rewrite and refactor 50% of the old COBOL system, or use X86 assembly. Should I use X86 assembler or COBOL?

• How do I generate a random string of up to a certain length?

  I would like to generate a random string (or a series of random strings, repetitions allowed) of length between 1 and n characters from some (finite) alphabet. Each string should be equally likely (in other words, the strings should be uniformly distributed). The uniformity requirement means that an algorithm like this doesn't work: alphabet = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz" len = rand(1, n) s = "" for(i = 0; i < len; ++i) s = s + alphabet[rand(0, 25)] (pseudo code, rand(a, b) returns a integer between a and b, inclusively, each integer equally likely) It doesn't work because shorter lengths are as likely as longer ones, meaning it's more likely to generate a shorter string than a longer one, so the result is not uniform.

  I've run into a problem while implementing sound and music into an HTML game that I'm building. I'm using the Web Audio API, loading all the sound files with XMLHttpRequests and decoding them into an AudioBufferSourceNode with AudioContext.prototype.decodeAudioData(). It looks something like this: var request = new XMLHttpRequest(); request.open("GET", "soundfile.ogg", true); request.responseType = "arraybuffer"; request.onload = function() { context.decodeAudioData(request.response) } request.send(); Everything plays fine, but on mobile the decodeAudioData takes an absurdly long time for the background music. I then tried using AudioContext.prototype.createMediaElementSource() to load the music from an HTML Audio object, since they support streaming and don't have to load the whole file into memory at once. It looked something like this: var audio = new Audio('soundfile.ogg'); var source = context.createMediaElementSource(audio); var mainVolume = context.createGain(); source.connect(mainVolume); mainVolume.connect(context.destination); This loads much faster, but the audio volume isn't affected by the gain node. Works fine on desktop, so I'm assuming this is a bug/limitation of mobile Chrome (testing on Android). Is there actually no good, well-performing way to handle sound on mobile browsers or am just I doing something stupid?

  Hello Using JAXB I've created a series of classes which represent my XML schema. Validating against the schema an XML file has thus become a 'tree' of java objects representing the XML. Now I'd like to access, delete and add an object of one the created types in my tree. If I've got classes' methods arranged like this: RootType class has: public List<FQType> getFq() { // and setter return fq; } FQType class has: public RemapType getRemap() { // and setter return remap; } RemapType class has: public String getSource() { // and setter return source; } What's the most concise way to code reading and writing of the 'source' member of a RemapType instance in an FQType instance with, say, fqtypeID=1, in an array of type RootType (in which RootType instances also each have rootID)? Currently I'm using a for loop Iterator in which is an if rootID = mySelectedRootID. In the if I nest a second for loop Iterator over the contained FQType instances and in that a second if fqTypeID = mySelectedFQTypeID. IE for loop iterator/if statement pairs to recognise the object of desire. With all the bells and whistles this way is nearly 15 lines of code to access a data type - can I do this in one line? • freeGLUT keyboard input

  I'm using GLUT (freeglut3) (via the Haskell GLUT bindings). import Graphics.UI.GLUT handleKBMouse :: KeyboardMouseCallback handleKBMouse key keyState mods mousePos = do print (key, keyState, mods, mousePos) main :: IO () main = do getArgsAndInitialize createWindow "testTitle" keyboardMouseCallback $= Just handleKBMouse mainLoop It seems that various important keys (e.g: Shift+Tab) do not call my callback. Also, "mods" doesn't describe the win-key, only Ctrl, Shift and Alt. Having such limited access to keyboard input is a serious impediment for real application development. Am I doing anything wrong here or is just freeglut just crippled? Is GLUT crippled in general?

• Problem with thumbnails after newly added - PHP on-the-fly method

  Hey again... to those that may have read my previous question that got solved a couple minutes ago .< The on-the-fly php script works perfectly, but when I went to upload new images into a gallery which I made myself, the images are resized to 150 x 150 for what I wanted... however, when it comes to new images being added it is all black... As you can see the three black images that were uploaded to the folder and the directory added to the database. What is causing this? If I view the source, the code is fine... the while loop in the PHP generates an output like this: <div class="view-wrap" id="photo-10"> <div class="view-icon"> <div class="img-label"> <a href="#" id="10" class="delete"><img src="img/small-delete.png" /> Delete</a> </div> <a href="img/events/Paintballing/24251_1395408043148_1170626626_1204038_5382765_n.jpg"> <img src="image.php?dir=img/events/Paintballing/24251_1395408043148_1170626626_1204038_5382765_n.jpg" alt="" width="110" height="110" /> </a> </div> </div> An example of one block. If I view the source (in Firefox) and click on the image.php?dir=img/events/Paintballing/24251_1395408043148_1170626626_1204038_5382765_n.jpg by exmaple, I can see the thumbnail at it's 150 x 150 size but in the layout, it shows a black thumbnail... Does anyone know why this is happening?
