Seeking good practice advice: multisite in Drupal

I'm using multisite to host my client sites. During development stage, I use subdomain to host the staging site, e.g. client1.mydomain.com. And here's how it look under the SITES folder: /sites/client1.mydomain.com When the site is completed and ready to go live, I created another folder for the actual domain, e.g. client1.com. Hence: /sites/client1.com Next, I created symlinks under client1.com for FILES and SETTINGS.PHP that points to the subdomain i.e. /sites/client1.com/settings.php --> /sites/client1.mydomain.com/settings.php /sites/client1.com/files --> /sites/client1.mydomain.com/files Finally, to prevent Google from indexing both the subdomain and actual domain, I created the rule in .htaccess to rewrite client1.mydomain.com to client1.com, therefore, should anyone try to access the subdomain, he will be redirected to the actual domain. This above arrangement works perfectly fine. But I somehow feel there is a better way to achieve the above in much simplified manner. Please feel free to share your views and all advice is much appreciated.

Is this a reasonable way to handle getters/setters in a PHP class?

I'm going to try something with the format of this question and I'm very open to suggestions about a better way to handle it. I didn't want to just dump a bunch of code in the question so I've posted the code for the class on refactormycode. base-class-for-easy-class-property-handling My thought was that people can either post code snippets here or make changes on refactormycode and post links back to their refactorings. I'll make upvotes and accept an answer (assuming there's a clear "winner") based on that. At any rate, on to the class itself: I see a lot of debate about getter/setter class methods and is it better to just access simple property variables directly or should every class have explicit get/set methods defined, blah blah blah. I like the idea of having explicit methods in case you have to add more logic later. Then you don't have to modify any code that uses the class. However I hate having a million functions that look like this: public function getFirstName() { return $this->firstName; } public function setFirstName($firstName) { return $this->firstName; } Now I'm sure I'm not the first person to do this (I'm hoping that there's a better way of doing it that someone can suggest to me). Basically, the PropertyHandler class has a __call magic method. Any methods that come through __call that start with "get" or "set" are then routed to functions that set or retrieve values into an associative array. The key into the array is the name of the calling method after get or set. So, if the method coming into __call is "getFirstName", the array key is "FirstName". I liked using __call because it will automatically take care of the case where the subclass already has a "getFirstName" method defined. My impression (and I may be wrong) is that the __get & __set magic methods don't do that. So here's an example of how it would work: class PropTest extends PropertyHandler { public function __construct() { parent::__construct(); } } $props = new PropTest(); $props->setFirstName("Mark"); echo $props->getFirstName(); Notice that PropTest doesn't actually have "setFirstName" or "getFirstName" methods and neither does PropertyHandler. All that's doing is manipulating array values. The other case would be where your subclass is already extending something else. Since you can't have true multiple inheritance in PHP, you can make your subclass have a PropertyHandler instance as a private variable. You have to add one more function but then things behave in exactly the same way. class PropTest2 { private $props; public function __construct() { $this->props = new PropertyHandler(); } public function __call($method, $arguments) { return $this->props->__call($method, $arguments); } } $props2 = new PropTest2(); $props2->setFirstName('Mark'); echo $props2->getFirstName(); Notice how the subclass has a __call method that just passes everything along to the PropertyHandler __call method. Another good argument against handling getters and setters this way is that it makes it really hard to document. In fact, it's basically impossible to use any sort of document generation tool since the explicit methods to be don't documented don't exist. I've pretty much abandoned this approach for now. It was an interesting learning exercise but I think it sacrifices too much clarity.

Jquery (non-gem) plugin won't work in my rails 3.2 app

I'm trying to equalize columns in my rails 3.2 app, and while there may be a better way to do it then my current attempt, after hours of trying to make it work I'd like to see if anyone can point out specifically why this jQuery plugin (which isn't a gem) is not working. I'm not getting any errors in the developer console, so it's hard to pin point. Chrome.tabs.getSelected() doesn't work. What am I doing wrong ?

Hi there ! I'm building my first GC extension, and I am having a problem using this function. I would like to get the url of the current tab, and to do so (after some google research, of course), I use the chrome.tabs.getSelected() function. Here it is in my code : ... socket.onopen = function(msg){ log("Welcome - status " + this.readyState); chrome.tabs.getSelected(null, function(tab){ sendUrl(tab.url); }); }; function sendUrl(tabUrl) { socket.send("#URL#"+ tabUrl); } The socket.open is a listener for the Websocket API I use in my extension. The log function print the status of the socket (1, which means it's OPEN or connected and ready to communicate, according to the Websocket API), but the chrome.tabs.getSelected() function do not seems to work, as the server do not receive anything (the socket is not the problem here, I tried to send a test message with socket.send() instead of chrome.tabs.getSelected() and the server received it). I put the permissions: ["tabs"] into the manifest.json so I can use this function. So I don't know what I am doing wrong here ? I also tried to put chrome.tab.getSelected() elsewhere in the code, but it is still not working. Any help is welcome :)

How to append html only if the div is empty in jQuery?

Thats OK, however I need to add it only once, so when the user click more times on the span it will be not adding more text. Remove() or empty() is not an option, as far as I know, because I need the information inside input boxes (there will be input boxes later for inserting user info) to stay there and not be deleted if the user click accidentally on the span again. It can however delete the html inside the div, if he clicks on another span. E.g. if span.log is active, after clicking on span.log nothing happens, but if he clicks on span.reg the html inside div.login-part will be removed and registration text will appear. How to do something like this?

App Crashing Inspite of Being ARC Enabled

I have been working on an iOS App for sometime now and its almost ready to submit. However, when I gave it to few people for testing purposes (running iOS 5)..they reported cases where the app crashes and the home screen is displayed on the phone OR a frozen app screen appears with no response whatsoever The app is ARC enabled and Xcode shows no warnings. So, I'm relli tensed about what's going wrong. I have declared properties in the following fashion: @property (nonatomic) IBOutlet UILabel *devCountLabel; @property (nonatomic) IBOutlet UIView *splashView; Likewise other properties are declared. Could anyone provide a solution ASAP. It is mainly a network based app and thus, CoreData usage is minimum.. Anyway, I'm running out of time..So Please provide a fix asap..oh and thanks a ton for it. PS: The App doesn't crash in the simulator, so I'm guessing it has something related to memory. And the crashes are random. So, repeating a set of steps to reproduce the crash doesn't help either. For Eg. When I click a button, modalViewControllerAnimation results in normal case. Now this occurs as expected most of the time and freezes the app other times.

howto catch jQuery for multiple links but not all

I'm trying to dig into jQuery but would like some feedback on how to do things the best way, I have a list with items, which each contains a hidden div that should show upon click on it's parent, list div:ed item1 with link hidden div div:ed item2 with link hidden div .. jQuery menu animation

Hi Stackoverflow, I'm building a website where I'm using jQuery to animate a horizontal tabbed menu. What I want to achieve can be seen here: / link removed / If you hover/mouseover the "Link 1" tab, you'll see that a white div is expanding. Each of the tab menu items are a styled li-tag. What I want to do is, that when you hover/mouseover i.e. the "Link 2" tab, the white div contracts and then expands again with content related to "Link 2" instead of "Link 1". Also, the "Link 1" tab should be expanded by default (i.e. when you just entered the site) Does any of you jQuery ninjas out there know how to do this? Jquery - removing an image before the client browser attempts to download it

Hi there, I wonder if anyone could help me with a problem I've been having. I have a number of large images available, but due to space limitations, I can't create multiple copies of these at various sizes. I have used PHP GD functions to resize the images to the sizes I need and output them to the browser. This works, but obviously takes some processing time, which therefore impacts pages load times. I'm fine with this, but I only want to show the image once it's fully loaded, and have a loading gif in its place until that time. I'm using jquery to do this. The problem I'm having is making the page functional whether the client has javascript enabled or not. If JS is not enabled, I want standard img tags to be outputted, otherwise the images are removed and replaced with a loading gif until they have been fully loaded. The link below shows a simple non-javascript unfriendly example of a what I want to do (try turning JS off): http://jqueryfordesigners.com/demo/image-load-demo.php I've been testing the basics using the code below. The attr() function will be replaced with something like remove(). This is just a test to make something happen to the image before the browser tries to load it. $(document).ready(function() { $( "#Thumbnails .thumbnail img" ).attr('src', '#'); }); In IE, this works correctly - the image source is replaced with "#" BEFORE the client browser gets a chance to start downloading the image. In firefox however, it downloads the image, and THEN changes the source. It seems to me that firefox is loading the jquery onready event later than it should. As far as I know, this should be executed before the standard onload event and before anything has started loading. If it helps, I'm testing it with a good number of images on screen (81). Am I doing something wrong?

Sync video play over network

Hi, I have made a media player that plays basically anything that's scheduled to it via a text file. The player can also play the exact same clip on multiple machines(PC's). The problem is the syncing. The same video starts playing on each of the machines, but they are out by about 400ms, which looks crap and if there's sound it's even worse. What I do at the moment is: One machine is set up as the master and all other machines are set up as slaves. The master decides what item will be played. It waits for a message from each of the slaves, once all slaves are connected (or after the timeout), it broadcasts the item id of the file that needs to be played. All machines then start playing that file. What I also tried: I thought that the file loading time might be the major driving factor in the sync mismatch, so I chankged the code to do the following. The master still decides what file to play. It waits for the connect message from each slave (or timeout) and transmits the item id of the file to play. All machines start playing that file but pauses it immediately. The master then again waits for a ready message from each of the slaves. As soon as all slaves responded the master sends a play message to all slaves. All machines then continue the file. This unfortunately did not improve the problem. I am now pretty sure the sync mismatch is due to network delay. How can I compensate for this? Or maybe determine the delay to each slave? All network comms are done with winsock. Any thoughts or ideas is much appreciated.

Randomizing Div tags using Java Script

I've looked around and have been able to find a piece of code that does the job but it doesn't work for all of my tags. I have a total of 8 Div tags that I want to randomize and this piece of code only allows me to randomize 7 of them. If I replace the 7 with an 8 it just shows everything in order. I don't work with Javascript very often and have hit a road block. jQuery & IE crashing on $('#someDiv').hide();

Well after a while of scratching my head and going "huh?" trying to figure out why IE would straight up crash when loading one of my pages loaded with jQuery goodness, I narrowed down the culprit to this line $('div#questions').hide(); And when I say IE crashes, I mean it fully crashes, attempting to do its webpage recovery nonsense that fails. I am running jQuery 1.4.2 and using IE 8 (haven't tested with any other versions) my current workaround is this: if ($.browser.msie) { window.location = "http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html"; } For some reason I feel my IE users won't be very pleased with this solution though. The div in question has a lot of content in it and other divs that get hidden and displayed again, and all of that works just fine and dandy, it is only when the giant parent div is hidden that IE flips out and stabs itself. Has anyone encountered this or have any possible ideas of what is going wrong? EDIT: Everything is wrapped up in the $(document).ready(function() { }); And my code is all internal so I can't link it unfortunately.

jquery an div tags used in a ordered list

hello everyone, i'm not sure where my errors are lying but here is my scenario... i have an un-ordered list in html that handles my main link bar... <ul id="navlist"> <li><a href="/" id="current">home</a></li> <li><a href="#" id="search">search</a></li> <li><a href="#" id="users">login</a></li> </ul> and what i want done is to call each id and have jQuery handle each and dislpay it where specified in my css file... for now, lets just ignore my "home" link... here is a snippet of my inline jquery $(document).ready(function() { $("a").click(function () { $("div#login").slideToggle("fast"); }); }) Now, whichever div i specify, it calls that ... however it will only call one div, using either from the un-orderd list, as mentioned above in the html. My Goal is to call a search bar when search is clicked, and to call a login box when login is clicked. to my knowledge (noob), i believe use an as a class, however that is what brings me here. i believe my error is in my jquery and not my css, as stated above, either instance will be displayed when the jquery function calls either tag. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance shan2on

Patterns and Libraries for working with raw UI values.

By raw values, I mean the application level values provided by UI controls, such as the Text property on a TextBox. Too often I find myself writing code to check and parse such values before they get used as a business level value, e.g. PaymentTermsNumDays. I've mitigated a lot of the spade work with rough and ready extension methods like String.ToNullableInt, but we all know that just isn't right. We can't put the whole world on String's shoulders. Do I look at tasking my UI to provide business values, using a ruleset pushed out from the server app, or open my business objects up a bit to do the required sanitising etc. as they required? Neither of these approaches sits quite right with me; the first seems closer to ideal, but quite a bit of work, while the latter doesn't show much respect to the business objects' single responsibility. The responsibilities of the UI are a closer match. Between these extremes, I could also just implement another DTO layer, an IoC container with sanitising and parsing services, derive enhanced UI controls, or stick to copy and paste inline drudgery.

Any suggestion how to get this done.......

Jquery Works in FF but not IE at all

I set up the SimpleModal plugin to work from our Ad server(Real 24/7). Essentially, attempting to make an interstitial ad. I serve a popupAd.js file from the Ad Server to our homepage(index.php), Here is the code for popupAd.js: $(document).ready(function() { $.modal('<iframe src="/welcomeAd.htm" height="525" width="562" style="border:0;" scrolling="no"/>', { closeHTML: "<a href='#' title='Close' align='right' style='color:#666>(X) Continue to website</a>", containerCss: { backgroundColor: '#fff', borderColor: "#0063dc", height: 525, padding: 0, width: 562, }, overlayCss:{ backgroundColor:"#fff", }, opacity:100, overlayClose: true }); }); This opens a modal window on the homepage which then loads welcomeAd.htm which contain nothing other than the ad call to the creative. Jquery conditionals, window locations, and viewdata. Oh my!

I have one last thing left on a project and its a doozy. Not only is this my first web application, but its the first app i used Jquery, CSS and MVC. I have no idea on how to proceed with this. What i am trying to do is: In my controller, a waste item is validated, and based on the results one of these things can happen. The validation is completed, nothing bad happens, which sets ViewData["FailedWasteId"] to -9999. Its a new waste item and the validation did not pass, which sets ViewData["FailedWasteId"] to 0. Its an existing waste item and the validation did not pass, which sets ViewData["FailedWasteId"] to the id of the waste item. This ViewData["FailedWasteId"] is set on page load using <%=Html.Hidden("wFailId", int.Parse(ViewData["WasteFailID"].ToString()))%> When the validations do not pass, then the page zooms (by window.location) to an invisible div, opens the invisible div etc. Hopefully my intentions are clear with this poor attempt at jquery. The new waste div is and the existing item divs are dynamically generated (this i know works) " So my question here is... Help? I cant even get the data to parse correctly, nor can i even get the conditionals to work. $(window).load(function(){}); problem in Opera

Hello. I need to recalculate body's main div height, than wait while all content (images) loads and only than show it to site visitor. In Chrome height calculation works, but seems that body doesn't hides, because all images loads as usual they should. In Opera, both functions doesn't work. Delay PHP execution until JavaScript cookie set?

I am trying to delay PHP execution until a cookie is set through JavaScript. The code is below, I trimmed the createCookie JavaScript function for simplicity (I've tested the function itself and it works). <?php if(!isset($_COOKIE["test"])) { ?> <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { // createCookie script createCookie("test", 1, 3600); }); </script> <?php // Reload the page to ensure cookie was set if(!isset($_COOKIE["test"])) { header("Location: http://localhost/asdf.php/"); } } ?> At first I had no idea why this didn't work, however after using microtime() I figured out that the PHP after the <script> was executing before the jQuery ready function. I reduced my code significantly to show a simple version that is answerable, I am well aware that I am able to use setcookie() in PHP, the requirements for the cookie are client-side. I understand mixing PHP and JavaScript is incorrect, but any help on how to make this work (is there a PHP delay? - I tried sleep(), didn't work and didn't think it would work, since the scripts would be delayed as well) would be greatly appreciated.
