• Biggest mistake you've ever made

  Similar to the question I read on Server Fault, what is the biggest mistake you've ever made in an IT related position. Some examples from friends: I needed to do some work on a production site so I decided to copy over the live database to the beta site. Pretty standard, but when I went to the beta site it was still pulling out-of-date info. OOPS! I had copied the beta database over to the live site! Thank god for backups. And for me, I created a form for an event that was to be held during a specific time range. Participants would fill out the form for a chance to win, and we would send the event organizers a CSV from the database. I went into the database, and found ONLY 1 ENTRY, MINE. Upon investigating, it appears as though I forgot an auto increment key, and because of the server setup there was no way to recover the lost data. I am aware this question is similar to ones on Stack Overflow but the ones I found seemed to receive generic answers instead of actual stories :) What is the biggest coding error/mistake ever…

• Log rotation with automatic *.log file discovery

  I am hosting several websites which each of run their own Python process and write *.log output files, but the directory structure is not standardized. Example: -rw-r--r-- 1 plone plone 125M 2012-08-29 11:35 ./x/var/log/instance-Z2.log -rw-r--r-- 1 plone plone 19M 2012-08-29 00:07 ./zope2.9/y/log/event.log -rw-r--r-- 1 plone plone 188M 2012-08-13 00:09 ./zope2.9/y/log/Z2.log -rw-r--r-- 1 plone plone 137M 2010-11-16 09:41 ./zope2.9/y/log/event.log I'd like to make log rotate autodiscovery these log files and run a log rotation on them, as opposite to manually type in every log file to logrotate conf. Does any existing tools offer this kind of log file discovery and rotation capabilities, without manually specifying each file? If not... then just write a shell script which generates the logrotate conf?

• Make Browsing Safer for Children in Google Chrome

  If you are worried about the websites that your children could accidentally visit while browsing, then you may want to have a look at the Kid Safe – LinkExtend extension for Google Chrome. Kid Safe – LinkExtend in Action Before going any further you may want to have a quick look at the options. Everything is enabled by default but it is recommended that you disable the “Allow entering unsafe sites Option”. For our first example we visited “chatroulette.com”. As you can see in the screenshot WOT and McAfee SiteAdvisor gave the website a “green rating” but when it came specifically to its’ level of appropriateness for children LinkExtend gave it a “yellow rating”. Our second example was “hotbabes.com”…obviously not a good website for any child to visit. You can see that the entire window area has been totally “blacked out” and the available information for this site from each of the six ratings sources. The “Toolbar Button” is also displaying a “red rating”… Notice the two links at the bottom of the ratings screen…both will be visible if the “Allow entering unsafe sites Option” is not disabled (see Options above). You can see the difference for the links at the bottom of the ratings screen if you have the “Allow entering unsafe sites Option” disabled. Definitely much much better… Clicking on the “Find Kids Sites Link” will navigate the tab to the Yahoo! Kids website. The extension will also place “ratings buttons” beside search results at Google. As you can see in the screenshot below not all of the results had information available for them at this time. But it is certainly a lot better than nothing at all when it comes to keeping your children safe. A close-up look at the ratings for one of the search results. Conclusion While no browser add-in makes for a perfect solution the Kid Safe – LinkExtend extension will definitely be a helpful addition to your family’s Chrome browser. • How to enable multiple displays with Catalyst drivers in Ubuntu 13.04?

  First, I installed Ubuntu 13.04. I have an ATI Radeon HD 7850. The open source drivers allowed multiple displays, but were horrendously laggy (even opening a browser window took several seconds). When I installed the Catalyst proprietary drivers, performance was perfect. The only problem is that trying to enable dual-monitors in the Catalyst center was grayed out and in the Ubuntu settings resulted in the resolution error. Is there any way around this?

• What happened to PolicyKit?

  Back in 8.04 or so, when PolicyKit was new, we had a GUI "browser" that enabled us to easily decide things like whether a user should be allowed to shutdown the system when other users were logged in and if it should always be allowed or only while on the console, etc. Then those things suddenly disappeared and though it seems PolicyKit is still in use, I haven't been able to find any similar GUI to actually configure the policies. What happened?

  Nearly 30 years ago the first Domain Name System (DNS) was tested and it changed the way we interacted with the internet. Nearly impossible to remember number addresses became easy to remember names. Without DNS you’d be browsing a web where numbered addresses pointed to numbered addresses. Google, for example, would look like http://209.85.148.105/ in your browser window. That’s assuming, of course, that a numbers-based web every gained enough traction to be popular enough to spawn a search giant like Google. How did this shift occur and what did we have before DNS? From Wikipedia: The practice of using a name as a simpler, more memorable abstraction of a host’s numerical address on a network dates back to the ARPANET era. Before the DNS was invented in 1983, each computer on the network retrieved a file called HOSTS.TXT from a computer at SRI. The HOSTS.TXT file mapped names to numerical addresses. A hosts file still exists on most modern operating systems by default and generally contains a mapping of the IP address 127.0.0.1 to “localhost”. Many operating systems use name resolution logic that allows the administrator to configure selection priorities for available name resolution methods. The rapid growth of the network made a centrally maintained, hand-crafted HOSTS.TXT file unsustainable; it became necessary to implement a more scalable system capable of automatically disseminating the requisite information. At the request of Jon Postel, Paul Mockapetris invented the Domain Name System in 1983 and wrote the first implementation. The original specifications were published by the Internet Engineering Task Force in RFC 882 and RFC 883, which were superseded in November 1987 by RFC 1034 and RFC 1035.Several additional Request for Comments have proposed various extensions to the core DNS protocols. Over the years it has been refined but the core of the system is essentially the same. When you type “google.com” into your web browser a DNS server is used to resolve that host name to the IP address of 209.85.148.105–making the web human-friendly in the process. • Very Cool &ndash; Miami 311 System for tracking citizen service requests (Windows Azure, Silverlight

  Having grown up in South Florida this short, but very enlightening, video explaining how the City of Miami has implemented a 311 citizen service request system using Windows Azure, Silverlight and Bing Maps definitely caught my attention. Miami311 The Miami311 System is a Windows Azure/Silverlight-based solution which enables City of Miami citizens report and track issues reported to city management. The system uses Bing Maps to plot the location and relevant information about each issue reported. Citizens now have the ability to easily see the status of the issue without having to call the city office. What I found interesting were a couple of benefits that a metropolitan area such as Miami can take advantage of in Windows Azure cloud-based solution. For the city of Miami, both benefits center around the weather. Of course the threat of a hurricane is a real issue in South Florida and what better way to make sure your site stays up during a hurricane then to have the site hosted far away from the eye of the storm. Using a Windows Azure cloud-based architecture the City of Miami is able to host the application within the Microsoft data centers safely away from any hurricane passing through South Florida. The second benefit is the inherent scalability of a Windows Azure based solution. During a severe weather event like thunderstorms or even worse, a hurricane, downed trees and power lines are a commonly reported problem. Being able to quickly scale up the computing resources required to handle the spike in citizens reporting these types of problems on the site is a huge benefit. Once the weather event has passed and downed tree reports begin to subside they can quickly reverse the process and scale the system back down to pre-storm levels. It’s kind of day-to-day kind of stuff but very cool stuff nonetheless. Have a day. :-|

• Ubuntu 12.04 - Tiny title bar and icon fonts

  As you can see in the screenshot, the fonts for the title bar (any window) and for the icons within the file browser (as well as in the navigation pane to the left) are very very small, I have tried to fix this by a number of ways including using MyUnity, but to no avail. Could someone please help me with this as it can render my PC unnavigatable unless I'm sitting right up against it, and even then I struggle. I am using Ubuntu 12.04. Screenshot

• How to back up a network volume to my Time Capsule?

  I have a Time Capsule that I'm using for my backups. I have a network volume (coincidentally on the same time capsule) that I'd like to back up as well. How can I tell Time Machine to back up network volumes in addition to my main laptop hard drive? PS: yes, I know this setup isn't ideal. It'll incur 2x network overhead when backing up the network volume, plus my data won't be safe in the event of a drive failure since both copies will be on the same disk. However, it will give me some small amount of safety in the event I accidentally delete files on the network volume, among other things.

• Turn Chrome’s New Tab Page into an Ubuntu Forums Powerhouse

  There’s a lot of start page plug-ins for Google Chrome, but if you’re an Ubuntu Forums enthusiast, you might be interested in the powerful UbuntuForums.org Start Page extension. Using the Ubuntu Forums Chrome Start Page Once you’ve installed the extension and opened a new tab, you’ll notice quite a difference from the boring default “New Tab Page”. While you may look at this and wonder if what you see is all that there is to it, there’s actually a lot of hidden customization and functionality. The upper left corner is where you will control the content displayed in the “Ubuntu New Tab Page”. The “Buttons Toolbar” that you see at the top lets you shift between the types of content viewed, from RSS feeds to bookmarks and more. This entire set of links provides direct links to the appropriate section in the Ubuntu Forums. As with the set of links pictured above each of these will open in a new tab when clicked on. There’s even a feature to browse wallpapers from DesktopNexus with categories on the left and pictures to the right. If you want to return to the regular layout you should use the “Start Page Link” highlighted here. Options The options will allow you to customize the colors shown in the “Ubuntu New Tab Page” to create a very nice match to your current browser and/or system theme if desired. • How do I change Firefox's `about:config` from a shell script?

  On of the first things I do when first using a fresh Firefox profile, is to set browser.urlbar.trimURLs to false (which really should be changeable though ‘Preferences’ or should have remained default), and to change the search and homepage defaults to DuckDuckGo. Currently I manually go to about:config, click through the angry warning message, and search for the keys (which unlike in DConf Editor, aren't even organised). So I would like to know how to read and write these keys from the command-line so that I can add these tweaks to my customisations script.

• How to make changes in gconf-editor permanent

  Every time I open my computer, I need to manually unset the value of button_layout in gconf-editor in /apps/metacity/general to make to the close, minimize and maximize buttons on the right side of the window, but every time I restart my computer it changes back to the left side. I've tried to right-click the setting and choose "set as default" - but this doesn't work. How can I make this be permanent?
