• Directory and Sub Directory listing

  I am trying to list the directory name (only name, not full path) and sub directories (only name, not full path) inside it. There is only one level of sub directories. I used below script to do this: @echo off&setlocal enableextensions for /r "PATH" %%G in (.) do ( Pushd %%G for %%* in (.) do set MyDir=%%~n* echo %MyDir% popd ) endlocal&goto :eof The problem with the above script is that it is showing root directory with the full path. How can I just make it show the directories in relation to the one I am working in?

• Dynamic procmail filters

  i need procmail to place incoming mail into specific folder depending on some set of rules. I know how i can accomplish this, but i need to write static set of rules in a specific file. What i really need is to configure procmail to use rules stored in mysql database. How i can do this? I've read a bit about that and one solution i found is to pipe message to a php/perl script and return a folder name to place message. But i have completely no i idea how to use php script as a rule and then use its return value.

• Installing Office 2010 through group policy without an msi

  I have been breaking my head for several days now trying to install Microsoft office 2010 through group policy. Unfortunately Microsoft decided it would be fun to release office without an MSI and so I either Need to create an msi for it or Need to install it through a logon script that would run the setup.exe from a network location. Any advise would be greatlly appreciated. I tried to create a script but even though I double click it and it runs properly, it does not seem to kick in when users log in or when the machine is turned on. Also is there an easy way to create an msi?

• How can I add a custom item to the Sound Indicator (and make it clickable more than once)?

  The original question One of the strength of Unity are the various standardized indicators. I want to customize the sound indicator with an additional menu entry that runs a small shell script. I'm not afraid of a little Python code and I hope someone can point me to the right subroutine in the right file. I suspect that will be fairly easy but all the indicators are just so bloated that I can't look through their code in a reasonable time. Any help is appreciated. I know it is possible as the marvelous Skype-Wrapper does it. Edit 2 - Now a dirty DBus hack The one click problem from one edit before has now turned into a DBus problem. Basically we have to tell the sound indicator that our bogus player has terminated now. • Dealing with institutionalized programmers.

  Some times programmers who work in a project for long time tend to get institutionalized. It is difficult to convince them with reasoning. Even if we manage to convince them they will be adamant to take suggestion on board. How do we handle the situation without developing friction in team? Institutionalized in terms of practices. I recently joined in a project where build &release process was made so complicated with unnecessary roadblocks. My suggestion was we can get rid of some of the development overheads(like filling few spreadsheets) just by integrating defect management and version controlling tools (both are IBM-Rational tools integration can be very easy and one-off effort). Also by using tools like Maven & Ant (project involves java and some COTS products) build & release can be simplified and reduce manual errors& intervention. I managed to convince and ready to put efforts for developing proof of concept. But the ‘Senior’ developer is not willing to take it on board. One reason could be the current process makes him valuable in team.

• Can I make ssh tell me which control file it would use for multiplexing?

  I am using the following options in my ~/.ssh/config in order to enable connection multiplexing: ControlMaster auto ControlPath ~/.ssh/control/master-%r@%h:%p However, this has the annoying problem that the first shell to connect to a particular server must be the last to disconnect, because it is the master connection that all the other connections are using. So if you log out of the master, it appears to just hang. To solve this, I would like to wrap ssh with a script that checks if the control master file exists, and if not, starts a master ssh process in the background. Then it would start a slave ssh session. In order to accomplish this, my script would have to determine the path to the control file that ssh would use. This would entail parsing the ssh command line options and config files and implementing the logic for determining the ControlPath. Is there any way to just ask ssh what path it would use, so I can check it?

  What I'm trying to do is loop over environment variables. I have a number of installs that change and each install has 3 IPs to push files to and run scripts on, and I want to automate this as much as possible (so that I only have to modify a file that I'll source with the environment variables). The following is a simplified version that once I figure out I can solve my problem. So given in my.props: COUNT=2 A_0=foo B_0=bar A_1=fizz B_1=buzz I want to fill in the for loop in the following script #!/bin/bash . <path>/my.props for ((i=0; i < COUNT; i++)) do <script here> done So that I can get the values from the environment variables.   hello I'm using openvpn and free-radius for control user accounts. for maximum session time for an user, free-radius has sqlcounter.conf that control that, but after a connection has disconnected that is useful and cannot destroy a connection. for control account time dynamically i need another script that do that. but should anytime that a connection has established a trigger run. is anyway to fire a custom trigger or script when a connection has established? or any way to control session time dynamically?

• compare the contents of two folders that are replicating by dfs

  I have a large folder that I am replicating by dfs and I want to check that all files have been replicated correctly. Currently I am running the following script at both ends. cd e:\data\shared\ dir /a:-h /b /s > e:\data\shared\result.txt and then using a text editor to tidy the file before using a diff tool to compare them. Does anyone know a better way of doing this? Failing that does anyone know how to adapt my script to ignore all the files in the DfsrPrivate folders

• Documenting your database with Visual Studio 2012 SSDT tools

  The title of this post is interesting and something I am wishing you and your colleagues had a better way to do. I understand as I am asked this question frequently. I couple of weeks ago I was asked the same question by a customer who documents their database using the ApexSQL Doc tools which uses the extended properties on objects to create automated documentation. I thought that was super interesting and went down the path to see how we could could support the creation of this documentation while leveraging the Visual Studio 2012 SSDT Tools. What I found is was rather intriguing. There is a property called “Description” on all objects in the SSDT tools. This property is rather subtle and I am betting overlooked. To be honest, this property has probably been there for a while and I just never discovered it. Adding text to this '”Description” property it allows Visual Studio to create the commands for the extended properties directly to your schema which should be version controlled. As I did more digging there seemed to be extended properties at every level in the SQL database objects. This fills some rather challenging gaps and allows organizations to manage SQL Schema using the Visual Studio SQL database tools while allowing a way to automatically document the database. This will also work in the automation of the creation and alter scripts that can be generated as part f an automated build system. Now we essentially get a way to store, build and document the database in a nice little ALM package. Happy Coding!

• Can't install or update Ubuntu after using parameter acpi_osi = Linux

  I recently had an issue with my acer 4736z notebook because I was having a blank screen after booting the OS, then someone told me to use the parameter GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "quiet splash acpi_osi = Linux" after quiet splash inside the grub. • Suspend/resume issue hp envy m6

  :) I just installed Ubuntu 13.10 on my HP envy m6. When I press the "power" button and select to suspend, it looks like it goes to sleep (power light flashing, as expected). When I press the power button to wake it (or anything else), it stops flashing and goes solid (as it should) but the screen is black. I tried CTRL+ALT+F1 but nothing seems to happen. Is there something I can do to get Ubuntu to resume from suspend? EDIT: I tried getting any updates for Ubuntu as well as updating my BIOS. Neither seems to have any effect. EDIT: Tried the 2nd script from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS suspend fix and it seemed to have no effect. Tried the 1st script and now I can't seem to suspend at all - Ubuntu seems to try to suspend and then immediately goes to the password prompt. With some combination of things I seem to be able to get a new crash, though, involving wpa_supplicant. I allowed it to submit feedback. My WiFi seems to be working fine (I assume this is what WPA is). EDIT: I know this is 'askubuntu', but I did try latest Linux Mint / Cinnamon. Results were exactly the same (black screen, power light solid after waking up - just as before, I can make it reboot by mashing CTRL+ALT+DEL but CTRL+ALT+F1/etc. doesn't work). Trying Ubuntu 12.04 next. EDIT: Ubuntu 12.04 WORKS! At least it seems to with a quick test. Came right back up after suspend. If I don't have any other problems and no answers are suggested, I'll make my own answer and accept it. Maybe someone can use this information to help troubleshoot the real issue. Would be nice to be on the latest version... but suspend would've been a deal-breaker for me. Hope this info helps someone.

• Learning Electronics & the Arduino Microcontroller

  Lately, I've had a growing interest in Electronics & Microcontrollers. I'm a loyal reader of Make Magazine and thoroughly enjoy seeing all the various projects in each issue, even though I rarely try to make any of them. I've been reading and watching videos about the Arduino, which is an open source Microcontroller and software project that the people at Make (and a lot of other folks) are pretty hot about. Even the prebuilt hardware is remarkably inexpensive , although there are kits available to build one from the base components. (Full disclosure: I bought my first soldering iron... EVER... just last week, so I fully acknowledge the likelihood of making some mistakes. That's why I'm not trying to do the "build it yourself" kit just yet. It's also another reason to be happy the hardware is so cheap.) There are a number of different Arduino boards available, but the two that have really piqued my interest are the Arduino UNO and the NETduino. The UNO is a very popular board, with a number of features and is under $35 which means I won't hurl myself off a bridge when I inevitably destroy it. The NETduino is very similar to the Arduino UNO and has the added advantage of being programmable with... you guessed it... C#. I'm actually ordering both boards and some miscellaneous other doodads to go with them.  There are a few good websites for this sort of thing, including www.makershed.com and www.adafruit.com. The price difference is negligible, so in my case, I'm ordering from Maker Shed (the Make Magazine people) because I want to support them. :) I've also picked up a few O'Reilly books on the subject which I am looking forward to reading & reviewing: Make: Electronics, Arduino: A Quick Start Guide and Getting Started With Arduino (all three of which arrived on my doorstep today.) This ties in with my "learn more about robotics" goals as well, since I'll need a good understanding of Electronics if I want to move past Lego Mindstorms eventually.

  I'm making a simple 2D game for Android using the Unity3D game engine. I created all the levels and everything but I'm stuck at making the game over/retry menu. So far I've been using new scenes as a game over menu. • Novice prototyping a massive multiplayer webpage based gaming system

  I'm trying to build a website based game in which various pages of the site act as different areas of the game. I am wondering what you would recommended as a design structure. Which languages would be best if building what will hopefully becomes a massive system able to scale to massive amounts of users. I am wondering if and how various elements from differing languages could be meshed to interact with each other. For example could I use html5, javascript, and PHP? What about asp.net how might that factor in? I'm a newbie programmer but I've been working on this idea for years and I want to build it to reality. Your comments and suggestions are appreciated. P.S.: The game is not all graphics and animation (though flash like appearance and some animation would be nice). What I am thinking of is essentially a heavily gamified system of forms. And LOTS of data in many different categories cross referencing each-other. I'm not sure how to go about structuring the collection of data. Also while I know javascript can be used to process some functions, I'm wondering what sort of base system I would need to handle the server side processing of what I am expecting to be some pretty significant algorithm processing. That is to say I expect to have many many many functions and I'm not sure how to mange this using javascript. I feel like they would be forgotten, mixed up, disorganizes as they essentially only exist where they are coded. I guess I need to learn something of libraries? OK, Thank you!   Ok i saw many post's on how to serialize the value of dragged items to get hash and they tell how to save them. • How to make HOME or END keys work in mc running on OS X (ssh)

  I installed MacPorts on OS X 10.5 and I found out that when I connect to the computer using SSH and use mc - Midnight Commander - the HOME and END keys do not work. I have to mention that I'm using putty and I am able to use the keyboard very well on Linux machines like Fedora, Ubuntu,... Here is putty keyboard configuration (a configuration I found to be optimal over time): Backspace key: 127 Home/End keys: Standard Function keys: Xterm R6 Cursor keys: Normal Numpad: normal Terminal type string: xterm-color I'm looking for a command line solution/script that does these changes, this make much easier to create a prepare OS script for configuring a new OS.

• chmod -R 777 /. - RHEL 5.5

  A shell script testing went bad and it issued chmod -R 777 /. to the system, instead of chmod -R 777 ./ and as expected it wiped the critical meta data. We have turned off the system and it will not function properly the next time it is turned on. I am told that rpm --setperms -a rpm --setugids -a should atleast fix the permission of the packages maintained by rpm. Is it worth doing? And is there any script available which will copy the permission from an identical system? To atleast get the box working. The Box is running RHEL5.5 Thanks!
