• Setup MSSQL replication with peer to peer topology: problem setting up Conflict Detection

  Hi, I'm setting up a SQL Replication strategy, using MSSQL2008 with peer-to-peer publications (2 servers, each one subscribes to the other). I followed this HOWTO from MSDN, and the setup seems to be working fine: add a record to one table on server A, query on server B shows the new record. So far, so good. So far I only have one table 'Templates': Id PK (calculated field) NodeId int default 1/2 (Server A = 1, Server B = 2) LocalId int autoid Name nvarchar(100) Now, I would like to enable 'Conflict detection', which should be enabled by default. But every time I try to save the 'Conflict Detection' feature in the Publication Properties I get the following error: Cannot save Peer conflict detection properties. I also can't seem to find out what the exact target table of the error "Column name 'Id' does not exist..." is. Has anyone every done this successfully? Am I missing something? Having this setup without conflict detection feels pretty useless... EDIT OK, so after some more research and setting up with different databases etc, I found out that the calculated 'Id' column of the Templates table is the culprit. I don't know why, but the replication doesn't seem to allow calculated columns (which are also primary key). It works now too, without the 'Id' column, and using the NodeId and LocalId as a combined PK. So now the question is, why isn't it allowed to have a calculated column as PK for replication with conflict detection?

• which package i should choose, if i want to install virtualenv for python?

• Is VBoxManage guestcontrol passing parameters incorrectly?

  I had an idea of using my Windows VM (on a Ubuntu host) to open itms:// links (for iTunes) from the host. So, I'm using vboxmanage guestcontrol to make this happen. I have a script (win_vm_launcher.sh) that takes a link as the argument, and passes it to the host like this: vboxmanage guestcontrol "$VM" exec --image 'C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe' --username "$USER" --password "$PASSWORD" -- /c start "$@" This works if I copy a link from my browser, and change http to itms. E.g., for https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598, I can do win_vm_launcher.sh itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598 and it works fine. The album opens up in iTunes on my VM. However, when I click a "View in iTunes" link from the iTunes site, it adds an extra parameter to the URI (specifically, the referrer), so it looks something like itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739 Unfortunately, if I try to run win_vm_launcher.sh itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739 it insteads opens up a regular Command Prompt window with the title "itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739". I don't even know how to set the command prompt window title, so I'm not sure how that's happening. If I run the command in the guest, it works fine, opening the album in iTunes: cmd /c start itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739 I found a VirtualBox bug that seems somewhat related, but not exactly. It probably doesn't matter, but my host is Ubuntu 12.04, and my guest is Windows 7. So, any idea if vboxmanage is incorrectly passing the arguments, and if so, is there a way around it? If I can't figure out the right way to do it, I'll end up having to process each argument, and stripping out any parameters on any URIs. P.S. I tried creating a batch script (out.bat) like this: echo %1 > %TEMP%/testing.txt and then running it from the host like this: vboxmanage guestcontrol "$VM" exec --image 'C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe' --username "$USER" --password "$PASSWORD" -- /c "C:\path\to\out.bat" "itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739" It ran as expected, and when I open %TEMP%/testing.txt, it contained: "itmss://itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-york-city/id3202598?ign-msr=https%3A%2F%2Fitunes.apple.com%2Fus%2Falbum%2Fit-came-upon-midnight-clear%2Fid578946739" including the quotes. So, it sort of passed the parameter correctly (not sure why it still had quotes), so maybe the problem is with cmd.exe, or even the start command. I'm stymied.

• Squid + Dans Guardian (simple configuration)

  I just built a new proxy server and compiled the latest versions of squid and dansguardian. We use basic authentication to select what users are allowed outside of our network. It seems squid is working just fine and accepts my username and password and lets me out. But if i connect to dans guardian, it prompts for username and password and then displays a message saying my username is not allowed to access the internet. Its pulling my username for the error message so i know it knows who i am. The part i get confused on is i thought that part was handled all by squid, and squid is working flawlessly. • Detecting upload success/failure in a scripted command-line SFTP session?

  I am writing a BASH shell script to upload all the files in a directory to a remote server and then delete them. It'll run every few hours via a CRON job. My complete script is below. The basic problem is that the part that's supposed to figure out whether the file uploaded successfully or not doesn't work. The SFTP command's exit status is always "0" regardless of whether the upload actually succeeded or not. • Static IPv6 address in Windows unused for outgoing connections

  I'm running a Windows server and trying to get it to use a static IPv6 address for outgoing connections to other IPv6 hosts (such as Gmail). I need this because Gmail requires a ptr record, and I can't set one for random addresses. The static address is configured on the host, but it also has a temporary privacy address as well as a random address from the router it seems. By default Windows uses the privacy address; it seems this is the expected behavior (and it makes perfect sense for people/users that did not set a static address, but I did!). I've tried disabling the privacy address with: netsh int ipv6 set privacy disabled This indeed gets rid of the privacy address, but I still have the random address that the router assigned. To disable this, it was said I needed to disable "router discovery" using this command: net interface ipv6 set interface 14 routerdiscovery=disabled Upon doing this, all IPv6 connectivity is lost. If I do this while pinging Gmail, it will report "Destination host unreachable" as soon as I enter the command. In the static IPv6 configuration, I did configure the default gateway and prefix length, so I don't see why it's unable to connect. Probably has something to do with the lack of ARP in IPv6 and somehow being unable to resolve the router's MAC, but I wouldn't know how to fix this. Finally I've tried disabling the DHCPv6 lease with these commands: netsh interface ipv6 set interface "IDMZ Team" managedaddress=disabled netsh interface ipv6 set interface "IDMZ Team" otherstateful=disabled Which was to no avail; the host continues to obtain and use the router-assigned IPv6 address. The router is a FritzBox 7340, which shows me all the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses that the host (identified by MAC) utilizes, but I'm unable to change the assigned address. Maybe this could be done over the telnet interface of the router somehow, but again, I wouldn't know how to do this even if it's the way to go. In short, any of the following would probably solve my problem: Change Windows' source address selection behavior. Have Windows not get an address from the router and not generate a privacy address; Have the router hand out a static address and make Windows use that as source address. Recover connectivity after disabling router discovery on Windows. Alternatively I might use some (batch, perl, ...) script to throw away all IPv6 addresses except the desired one, but this feels rather hacky. If it's the only way (or less hacky than another hacky solution), it might be an option though. Thanks!

• Weird random application hang problem

  I am trying to understand an application hang problem that started up lately on my windows xp system. The system runs fine for days (sometimes) without ever shutting down or putting it to sleep, but the problem first shows up as one of the apps hanging. The application's UI stops responding or one or more background threads hang, so even though the GUI is responding, it is not doing anything (e.g., in VirtualDub's case, the UI responds fine, but the job doesn't progress and I won't even be able to abort it). The weirdness part comes from the fact that if I try to kill such an app, the program that is used to kill it goes into the same mode (i.e, that hangs instead of the original). E.g., if I use Process Explorer to kill it, the original program exits, but procexp now hangs. If I use another instance of procexp to kill the one that is hanging, this repeats, so there is always at least one program hanging in that state. This is not specific to procexp, I tried the native task manager and even the "End Process" dialog from windows explorer that shows up when you try to close a non-responsive GUI (in this case, the explorer itself hangs). The only program that didn't hang after the kill, is the command line taskkill. However, in this case, explorer hangs instead of taskkill. Also, once this problem starts manifesting, it soon ends up freezing the whole system to the extent that even a clean shutdown is not possible, so I have learned to reboot as soon as I notice this problem, however this is very inconvenient, as I often have encoding batch jobs going on which can't continue the job after the restart. The longer I leave the system running after seeing this problem, the more applications get into this state. I have tried to do a repair install but that didn't make any difference. I also uninstalled some of the newer installs, but again no difference. I tried to search online, but got inundating results for generic hang and crash related problems. Though I couldn't notice any pattern, it seems as though the problem is more frequent if I have some video encoding going on at that time. I had the system running for days when I only do browsing and internet audio/video chat before I decide to start encoding something and the problem starts to show up. I am not too sure if it is the encoding program that first hangs, though I almost always noticed that too hanging (like the VirtualDub stopping to make progress). I also had to reboot 3 times on one day when I was heavily experimenting with encoding. I would appreciate any help in narrowing down this problem and save me the trouble of reinstalling. I don't especially want to loose my gotd installs.

I want to keep the ownership and permission setting of NTFS files, then want to let the new user take the old user's SID, so that I can access files as before without permission problem. The cacls command line tool can't be used in such situation, because the file does belongs to new user, so it will failed with Access is denied error. and it can't change ownership. Even if I can change the owership via SubInACL tool, cacls can't remove the old user's permission because the old user does not exist on new installation, and can't copy the old user's permission to new user. So, can we simply bind old user's SID to new user on the freshly installed Windows ?   I have a form which is essentially an autocomplete input box. I can get this to work perfectly for a single text box. What I need to do is create unique input boxes by using a php for loop. This will use the counter $i to give each input box a unique name and id. The problem is that the unique value of the input box needs to be passed to the javascript. this will then pass the inputted data to the external php page and return the mysql results.   I have custom ListView with three TextView three Button and three Chronometer. And the situation is I am loading the ListView properly.But while loading ListView I am disabling some button in the ListView by checking one parameter. Up to this point ListView is showing it's row properly. But when I am scrolling the ListView at that time previously enabled Button are getting disabled.What I am doing wrong I am not getting can one please point out my mistake Or any suggestion. • Why do my Application Compatibility Toolkit Data Collectors fail to write to my ACT Log Share?

  I am trying to get the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.6 (version 5.6.7320.0) to work, but I cannot get the Data Collectors to write to the ACT Log Share. The configuration is as follows. Machine: ACT-Server Domain: mydomain.example.com OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit Edition Windows Firewall configuration: File and Printer Sharing (SMB-In) is enabled for Public, Domain, and Private networks ACT Log Share: ACT Share permissions*: Group/user names Allow permissions --------------------------------------- Everyone Full Control Administrator Full Control Domain Admins Full Control Administrators Full Control ANONYMOUS LOGON Full Control Folder permissions*: Group/user name Allow permissions Apply to ------------------------------------------------- ANONYMOUS LOGON Read, write & execute This folder, subfolders, and files Domain Admins Full control This folder, subfolders, and files Everyone Read, write & execute This folder, subfolders, and files Administrators Full control This folder, subfolders, and files CREATOR OWNER Full control Subfolders and files SYSTEM Full control This folder, subfolders, and files INTERACTIVE Traverse folder / This folder, subfolders, and files execute file, List folder / read data, Read attributes, Read extended attributes, Create files / write data, Create folders / append data, Write attributes, Write extended attributes, Delete subfolders and files, Delete, Read permissions SERVICE (same as INTERACTIVE) BATCH (same as INTERACTIVE) *I am fully aware that these permissions are excessive, but that is beside the point of this question. Some of the clients running the Data Collector are domain members, but some are not. I am working under the assumption that this is a Windows file sharing permission issue or a network access policy issue, but of course, I could be wrong. It is my understanding that the Data Collector runs in the security context of the SYSTEM account, which for domain members appears on the network as MYDOMAIN\machineaccount. It is also my understanding from reading numerous pieces of documentation that setting the ANONYMOUS LOGON permissions as I have above should allow these computer accounts and non-domain-joined computers to access the share. To test connectivity, I set up the Windows XP Mode virtual machine (VM) on ACT-Server. In the VM, I opened a command prompt running as SYSTEM (using the old "at" command trick). I used this command prompt to run explorer.exe. In this Windows Explorer instance, I typed \ACT-Server\ACT into the address bar, and then I was prompted for logon credentials. The goal, though, was not to be prompted. I also used the "net use /delete" command in the command prompt window to delete connections to the ACT-Server\IPC$ share each time my connection attempt failed. I have made sure that the appropriate exceptions are Since ACT-Server is a domain member, the "Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts" security policy is set to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves". In spite of this, I still tried enabling the Guest account and adding permissions for it on the share to no effect. What am I missing here? How do I allow anonymous logons to a shared folder as a step toward getting my ACT Data Collectors to deposit their data correctly? Am I even on the right track, or is the issue elsewhere?

• getView only shows Flagged Backgrounds for drawn Views, It does not show Flagged Background when scroll to view more items on list

  I am trying to create a listview that receives a flagged list of items to indicate a status to the user. I have been able to create the flag display by using a yellow background (see image at bottom). In Theory, the flagged list can have many flagged items in it. However in my app, only the first three flagged backgrounds are shown. I believe this is because they are initially drawn to the screen. The Flagged background that are not drawn initially to the screen do not show. I'd like to know how to get the remaining flags to show in the list. ListView Recycling: The backgrounds in the listView are being recycled in getView(). This recycling goes from position 0 to position 9. I have flags that need to match at positions 13, 14 and so on. Those positions are not being displayed. listView.getCheckedItemPositions() for multiple selections: This method will not work in my case because the user will not selected the flags. The flags are coming from the server. setNotifyOnChange() and/or public virtual void SetNotifyOnChange (bool notifyOnChange): I'm not adding new data to the list, so I don't see how this method would work for my program. Does this method communicate to getview when it is recycling data? • Random Computer Crashes

  Ok, here's a wierd one for you all. Occasionally my PC here at work will crash in a very peculiar way. My dual monitors will suddenly go blank as if there is no longer a video signal, the USB mouse light will go dark and mouse stays unresponsive, the keyboard lights will not change status when the appropriate keys are pressed (Num/Caps/Scoll Lock). The CD Tray WILL open and close. But the computer will not respond to a ping request. For all intents & purposes it's as if the computer is off, except it wasn't intentional by me. The power light and internal fans are still on and I've now lost any unsaved work. Now here's where it gets wierd. This PC is part of a batch of PC's we got from a local vendor who does our initial system builds. Mine, and 6 other co-workers PCs all have the same issue. Originally we thought it was a bad combination of hardware, but through trial and error the only thing we haven't eliminated are the OS, Mobo & CPU. The problem was so bad for some of them that they ended up going back to their 5 year old dinosaurs in order to get some work done, for me the problem isn't as bad, maybe once every other day or so, but still enough to bite me in the ass if I've forgotten my ritualistic pressing of CTRL-S every 1-5 minutes. In this case we've tried two different video cards, two different power supplies, two different memory configurations, running on a UPS/not on UPS, updating/rolling back video drivers, three different bios revisions. The only things we haven't swapped are the mobo & cpu, mainly because a new mobo means a new Hardware Abstraction Layer, ie re-install of windows and there's alot of other software on this PC that takes forever to reload by hand. There was a base image that our systems team created with all the drivers installed and the basic setup of software our company uses, but they then must customize the setup for us programmers so it takes a while to get a new configuration up and going. I'm a programmer by day and am usually pretty good at diagnosing computer problems whether through trial and error or not. We've pretty much exhausted all the ideas we can think of here, short of a new mobo/cpu. Was hoping someone out there might have anything else we can try.. • How do I (robustly) remotely execute tasks on Windows workstations in a domain?

  I'm not even sure if "robustly" is a word. Anyway. Context: We have a few hundred Windows 7 workstations on a LAN. We use AD/GPO management pretty heavily, but there are a lot of periodic and/or manual maintenance tasks we need to do that can't be done via GPO/scheduled task. For example, say I want to execute program X (which runs silently, in the background, and doesn't bother the user) on workstation Y, or say I want to execute task A on a workstation group B either on a schedule or on demand. Kicking the users off of their computers to do this (i.e. using RDP) is a no-no, and doesn't work on groups anyway. Question: What's the best way to do this that is robust enough that, after setup, I could give it to beginner support people (read: people who are phobic of the command line, and get confused with GUI interfaces more complicated than Firefox)? I'm a competent programmer, and, if there is a robust set of tools or framework out there for this type of task, I'd consider hacking something together myself if it didn't take too long. If there's some combination of tools or techniques that others use to make remote-workstation-administration doable by beginners, I have yet to find it. For those who care about the "why": I'm midlevel IT, and was told to implement a remote management solution that allows arbitrary/scheduled remote execution, with confirmation that programs actually ran remotely, and the ability to view what they returned. "Why?" I asked, "Can't I just use PsExec and the task scheduler on a dispatcher machine?" "No," I was told, "'Joe' the second-week tech is going to be in charge of this one, and he needs something simple with a GUI." What I've tried: I've played with making a bunch of one-clickable "transfer files to remote computer and run them with PsExec" batch/VB scrips, but those tend to break down and don't easily support running on customizable groups. I've played a little bit with the Windows version of Puppet, but it doesn't support arbitrary-time remote execution (it's ability to group computers into a tree/node structure is really nice though). I've used an older version of Altiris, and, while it does a lot of what I want, it's interface is awful, it's slow, crashes a lot, and is probably too expensive for management. SwiftWater's DMS solution does some of what I want, but it's very underdeveloped, closed-source (not a deal breaker but not ideal), and I get the impression that support and reliability are lacking.

• drop down menu will not display outside containing div in IE7..

  I am tearing my hair out over this, I have a dropdown menu using CSS and jQuery (thanks to Soh Tanaka) and it works perfectly in Firefox, Safari, Google chrome and I.E. 8, but in IE 7 it will not drop down outside the 'Banner div'. It drops below the nav div however. I have moved the nav div higher in the banner the result is the same, menu drops until it reaches the border of the banner div and then vanishes.... Below is the css. This is my first website and I have some limited understanding of what I am doing. The drop down menu includes transparent png's as links (I know, I know...but it's what the Boss wants...) please could someone take a quick scan at the below CSS and let me know what is wroong? Is this some form of the IE z-index bug? i have tried all different combinations of z-index and still I can't get a different result. . The html is below as well. • FTP script needs blank line

  I am trying to determine the reason for some FTP servers requiring a blank line in the script as follows: open server.com username ftp_commands bye Refer to blank line required after username credentials. Admittedly FTP is outdated, but many clients still have legacy systems, which they cannot upgrade or replace. The reason thereof should not be discussed here. The intention of this question is to invite a positive response. Please do not respond if you disagree with the above. If you have never encountered this same issue, please do not respond. I suspect this may be limited to FTP scripts executed from Windows machines, but have been told that this happens often and with many different servers. My specific interest is to understand what may cause this as I have a real world example of a production system suddenly requiring this as a workaround fix, after running for many years without issue. The server belongs to a third party who claims no change on their end. Server details unknown and cannot be determined. Any help or encouragement from someone who has come across the same, would be appreciated. ps. Sorry for the many words and references to painful responses, but I have asked similar questions on serverfault and elsewhere and unfortunately got back kneejerk responses to FTP and respondents debating the validity of the question. I would truly not ask, or re-post this question online if I had a better understanding of the issue. I know of people who have seen this issue, but don't know what causes it.   Hi, I've created a site basic definition that uses different master and default pages. Everything works quite well except for whenever I create a new site based on the definition I receive the following error when browsing to the new site: [COMException (0x80004005): Cannot complete this action. • Gacutil.exe on Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2

  I'm trying to deploy a Web Part Feature as part of solution. Solution being add to the store and feature being added successfully. Full trust enabled in Web.Config for bin deployment of the .DLL but Web Part not working when page viewed by a non-admin user... So, decided to deploy to GAC but discovered that gacutil.exe is not included with the OS? The only place I can find it is in the Windows SDK with a download size of over 22GB! I know I can choose to download only certain components, but which ones should I select and are there any dependencies? Better yet, is there an easier way to get a copy of the gacutil.exe tool?
