• How to run applications as root?

  I am having some strange issue with Kate and Kwrite. When I click on Open File, it crashes with segmentation fault. I am a complete newbie to Linux, and I think the issue is that I am not running the application as root. How do I run applications as root in Ubuntu? Is it bad practice to do this? What is the purpose of the whole root thing, where even though we need to use root so frequently, it is not utilized as default?

• Code refactoring with Visual Studio 2010 Part-4

  I have been writing few post with code refactoring features in Visual Studio 2010. This post also will be part of series and this post will be last of the series. In this post I am going explain two features 1) Encapsulate Field and 2) Extract Interface. Let’s explore both features in details. Encapsulate Field: This is a nice code refactoring feature provides by Visual Studio 2010. With help of this feature we can create properties from the existing private field of the class. Let’s take a simple example of Customer Class. In that I there are two private field called firstName and lastName. Below is the code for the class. public class Customer { private string firstName; private string lastName; public string Address { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } Now lets encapsulate first field firstName with Encapsulate feature. So first select that field and goto refactor menu in Visual Studio 2010 and click on Encapsulate Field. Once you click that a dialog box will appear like following. Now once you click OK a preview dialog box will open as we have selected preview reference changes. I think its a good options to check that option to preview code that is being changed by IDE itself. Dialog will look like following. Once you click apply it create a new property called FirstName. Same way I have done for the lastName and now my customer class code look like following. public class Customer { private string firstName; public string FirstName { get { return firstName; } set { firstName = value; } } private string lastName; public string LastName { get { return lastName; } set { lastName = value; } } public string Address { get; set; } public string City { get; set; } } So you can see that its very easy to create properties with existing fields and you don’t have to change anything there in code it will change all the stuff itself. Extract Interface: When you are writing software prototype and You don’t know the future implementation of that then its a good practice to use interface there. I am going to explain here that How we can extract interface from the existing code without writing a single line of code with the help of code refactoring feature of Visual Studio 2010. For that I have create a Simple Repository class called CustomerRepository with three methods like following. public class CustomerRespository { public void Add() { // Some code to add customer } public void Update() { //some code to update customer } public void Delete() { //some code delete customer } } In above class there are three method Add,Update and Delete where we are going to implement some code for each one. Now I want to create a interface which I can use for my other entities in project. So let’s create a interface from the above class with the help of Visual Studio 2010. So first select class and goto refactor menu and click Extract Interface. It will open up dialog box like following. Here I have selected all the method for interface and Once I click OK then it will create a new file called ICustomerRespository where it has created a interface. Just like following. Here is a code for that interface. using System; namespace CodeRefractoring { interface ICustomerRespository { void Add(); void Delete(); void Update(); } } Now let's see the code for the our class. It will also changed like following to implement the interface. public class CustomerRespository : ICustomerRespository { public void Add() { // Some code to add customer } public void Update() { //some code to update customer } public void Delete() { //some code delete customer } } Isn't that great we have created a interface and implemented it without writing a single line of code.   I try to be careful when accepting assignments, to avoid mutual disappointment. So, I started to come up with a list of things that I consider ingredients for The Ideal Project: (in no particular order) What did I miss? What did I get wrong? Team size < 6 persons to avoid having too many meetings Team members must be dedicated to the project Gut-feeling-estimate (made by developers) of running period does not exceed 4 months. Projects longer than that tend to become open-ended, and are therefore not projects. Has a Product Owner who has mandate and is well-respected at their own company and who has a real interest in the long-term success of the project. Has no technical involvement from people that are not on the team. (yes that's you, Mr Architect That Doesn't Code) All the usual about quiet working conditions Exciting subject matter. Content management is just not as cool as controlling robots :)

• ACER Aspire V5-171 compatibility

  Im thinking about buying a V5-171 with an i3 in it. Im worried about secure boot though. I heard some people cant turn it off and it wont work... Im not shy to open it up and replace the hard drive with Ubuntu preinstalled. Im also worried about the wifi working. I have heard its been dropping out for people quite a bit along with also the trackpad not working. I dont mind replacing the wifi stick (if its even possible?) inside. Is the GPU (HD4000 i think) supported in ubuntu with full video accel? Thanks!

• Discussion of a Distributed Data Storage implementation

  I want to implement a distributed data storage using a client/server architecture. Each data item will be stored persistently in disk in one of several remote servers. The client uses a library to update and query the data, shielding the client from its actual location. This should allow a client to associate keys (String) to values(byte[]), much as a Map does. The system must ensure that the amount of data stored in each server is approximately the same. The set of servers is known beforehand by other servers and clients. Both the client and the server will be written in Java, using sockets, threads, and files. I open this topic with the objective of discussing the best way to implement this idea, assuming simplicity, what are the issues of this implementation, performance measurements and discussion of the limitations.

• Fastest way to run a JSON server on my local machine

  I am a front-end developer. For many experiemnets I do I need to have a server that talks JSON with my client side app. Normally that server is a simple server that response to my POSTs and GETs. For example I need to setup a server that saves, modifies and read data from a "library" database like this: POST /books create a book GET /book/:id gets a book and so on... What is the fastest and easiest technology stack for database and server in this case? I am open to use Ruby, Nodejs and anything that do the job fast and easy. Is there any framework (on any language) that do stuff like this for me?

• tor browser install ubuntu 14.04

  I have read the answers to other questions regarding the install/running of the tor browser. I have tried the answers given but still cannot get the tor browser to run on mine. I have ubuntu 14.04 and where it shows to start tor browser when I double click all I get is an open tab full of code. Anyone with suggestions I should try? I also tried downloading from tor project did not work and tried the install using command in the terminal and it also did not work. When I had windows I had no problem with the install or the tor browser running. I really like ubuntu better this is the only thing that I am having trouble with. PLEASE HELP!!!

• How do I provide arguments to an application launcher in kde?

  So I can create launchers in a quicklaunch thing on the kde desktop. The launchers are easy to create, and work most of the time. What I haven't figured out, is how to pass arguments to the applications that I want to launch. I want to launch the firefox profile manager and I also want to add a launcher for an emacsclient frame. For emacsclient, I've tried these: emacsclient -c "emacsclient -c" 'emacsclient -c' None of them work. When I click the launcher, the tiny emacs logo appears attached to the mouse pointer, and stays there for at least a couple of minutes, but no new frame opens. So, how can I actually open an emacsclient frame, or any other application with an argument from quicklaunch?

• Beggining OpenGL vs beggining DirectX and some question about the philosophical difference between them

  I'm begginning with Direct X at school, and my teacher said it was harder to begin with than OpenGL, but I read several things that in fact, Direct X was more advanced than OpenGL in terms of recent graphic cards features. Since I'm far from wanting to do top notch effects, which can already be implemented with existing engines and/or shaders, I wanted to know your opinion: Can OpenGL be considered like a more basic, KISS, hardware agnostic, graphic library to just do 3D with acceleration, and consider DirectX like a top notch, game-oriented graphic API that will always support the next-gen 3D chips ? Citation from wikipedia on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Tech_5 : John Carmack mentioned in his keynote at QuakeCon 2007 that the id Tech 5 engine will not be using the DirectX 10 API. I don't want to seem like I'm minding open source because Carmack does and because he is famous, it's just that android and iPhone are out there, and Direct X doesn't seems to me to be the necessary API to know, since Windows supports OpenGL, and since the 360 is just a console among other consoles.

• Program To Cascade/Tile Windows

  I have perhaps ten or fifteen windows open. I'd like a program which automatically resizes all the windows and arranges them in columns and rows across the screen (a grid formation), automatically figuring out the largest size for the windows so that they still fit. This isn't an "Expose" type program - I want the windows to stay resized. I am using OpenBox to do my window management and am otherwise happy with it, I don't want to find a whole new window manager just to solve this problem. The program Tile is almost perfect, but it doesn't know how to lay the windows out in a grid formation. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  Is there a way to remove kernel 3.1 from Oneiric? I was able to reboot quickly, but Firefox and Chrome constantly crash with Kernel 3.1. I am using Gnome 3.2 and saw improvement with 3.0.0.13 provided by ppa. • There's no Sound Mixer menu, missing menu option in Sound Recorder

  I am using: -Ubuntu 11.10 -Skype -PS3 Eye Toy camera to input video and sound This setup has been properly working in former Ubuntu releases. To use the mic already built in on the PS3 Eye Toy camera I open de Sound Recorder app (notice: not inside Skype, from inside Skype it is not possible to do this) that is included in Gnome and then I go to FileSound Mixer, from this menu I can choose Gnome to get the input audio from the PS3 Eye Toy, instead of from the Audio-In of the computer. Now in Ubuntu 11.10 this Sound Mixer menu inside Sound Recorder is missing, Gnome says something like this: gnome-volume-control is not installed in the proper directory Note: I have tried this on Unity, Unity 2D, Gnome Classic, Gnome Classic 2D and Gnome Shell. In all of them the problem is the same. What can I do? Basically what I want to do is to be able to tell the computer to get the audio in from the PS3 Camera. Thanks in advance.

• Mount to /dev/sdb1 without password

  I am unable to mount a USB drive (or SD card) to my system without root access. When I plug in a USB drive, it is visible in the left column of Nautilus, but when I click on it to open it, I receive the error message Unable to mount 2.1 GB Filesystem Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/sdb1 I am able to mount the drive using sudo mount -w /dev/sdb1, but this causes problems for operations such as creating startup discs, which requires unmounting and remounting the drive. I suspect this problem may be caused by the fact that when I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, I had an SD card plugged in. This caused the system to stall during later startups, as it could not find this drive. I remedied this by editing a line of /etc/fstab to read /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1 vfat noauto 0 0 However, I am dual booting Ubuntu with Windows XP, and I have no problem mounting the C: drive of the Windows system without root access, so I feel that this is a problem related to the mount point rather than mounting in general.

  I have moved to Asia where my internet connection is censored and I'd like to check my messages from social sites which happen to be blocked. As virtually all proxy servers are blocked in this country, I've decided to attempt to roll my own encrypted proxy server. Please note, the key word here is encrypted—if the sniffer sees anything like f@c3b00k or w:k:p3d:ia travelling down the wire I'm had. I have a website hosted with GoDaddy (Windows with PHP 5.2 & IIS 7). Is there any way I can set up an encrypted proxy through this service? If so, how, and what open source tools are available to use?

• How to determine file in "Error opening file for reading" error

  Since Ubuntu 12.04, whenever I open aterm, I get the following error message: Error opening file for reading: Permission denied aterm still opens and runs correctly, but I get that error message. I'd like to figure out what all this is about. Is someone familiar with this specific error for aterm? Otherwise, is there some log that records files that are attempting to be opened so I can determine what file it's complaining about? I've grepped my log files for "aterm" without success. Other tips for determining what the issue is?

• Unity 3D not Working on Acer D270 w/ Intel GMA 3600

  I recently bought myself an Acer Aspire One D270 with the GMA 3600 graphics chipset thinking I would get some lovely graphics. However, I am stuck using Unity 2D and I cant figure out how to enable 3D. None of the fixes I have found so far have worked. Another effect of this is that I cant change the backlight brightness. So whenever I open the lid, looking at the screen is like staring into the sun. Is there a driver for it in the works? Does the 3.4 kernel support the chipset and most of all is there a way to fix this? Please help

• Cannot install ia32-libs on a 64 bit Ubuntu installation

  I am using a 64-bit installation of Oneiric. I need to install the ia32-libs package to get some applications (evince, adobe reader) to work. For example, adobe reader is giving the following error: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. However, I am not able to install it since it is showing a dependency on ia32-libs-multiarch, which in turn is showing a dependency on gstreamer0.10-plugins-good:i386. This in turn depends on few other packages. How can I install these packages safely and still meet all the dependencies.

• Scalable distributed file system for blobs like images and other documents

  Cassandra & HBase both do not efficiently support storage of blobs like images. Storing directly on HDFS stresses the Namenode because of huge number of files. Facebook uses Haystack for images and attachments storage, but this is not open source. So is Lustre a good choice for distributed blob storage? I have read that Amazon S3 is used by many, but this would cost money and personally, I would not like to rely on third party system. What are other suggestions?
