  • Another Way to Learn SQL Server

    - by RickHeiges
Since 2004, I have been on the Advisory Board for several continuing education certificate programs for the University of Washington. You might know some of the other Advisory Board Memebrs - check it out. The Advisory Board meets very infrequently and is asked for "advice" (not direction) on various aspects of the program. Generally speaking, courses that are taught for a degree are non-platform specific. Continuing Education courses and certificate programs are more product focused. As you can...(read more)

  • Outrageous Work Conditions for a Developer analyst

    - by akjoshi
Recently came across a job opening sent to me by a HR person on LinkedIn; The service based company is a very big name in IT but the work conditions mentioned in the job description were extremely unusual - I mean who the hell would like to apply for a job where a company wants you to be ready for lifting and transporting of computers, that too on top of extended work hours and weekends. I used to think that JD’s are supposed to encourage candidates to join the company but this one here looks totally...(read more)

  • Common header file for C++ and JavaScipt

    - by paperjam
I have an app that runs a C++ server backend and Javascript on the client. I would like to define certain strings once only, for both pieces of code. For example, I might have a CSS class "row-hover" - I want to define this class name in one place only in case I change it later. Is there an easy way to include, or read, some sort of common definitions file into both C++ and JavaScript? Ideally as a compile / preprocessing step but any neat approach good.

  • Third Party Applications and Other Acts of Violence Against Your SQL Server

    - by KKline
I just got finished reading a great blog post from my buddy, Thomas LaRock ( t | b ), in which he describes a useful personal policy he used to track changes made to his SQL Servers when installing third-party products. Note that I'm talking about line-of-business applications here - your inventory management systems and help desk ticketing apps. I'm not talking about monitoring and tuning applications since they, by their very nature, need a different sort of access to your back-end server resources....(read more)

  • Change CSS EMs to Percentage Automatically.

    - by Zachary Brown
I cheated on a small site I was working on and used a site builder (Web Dwarf by Virtual Mechanics) to save time. I didn't realize it at the time, but this builder specifies the width, height and positions using CSS EMs. Is there an automated tool out there that will read through the CSS and convert each EM to a percentage so it will display correctly on wide screens as well? Any help would be great! Thanks. Here is the CSS: http://pastebin.de/14055
