• How to redirect sound to USB headset when plugged in?

  I often have to switch between audio output from my speakers and my headset (P5Q mobo with integrated sound and Microsoft headset). I've already got it so that when my headset is plugged in, sound will be played through it, and if it isn't, sound will play through my speakers. The problem is that if I have a game or similar program started while my headset is plugged in, if I unplug it, I will get no sound. Also, if I start the program with no headset, and plug it in, I get sound still through speakers. Is there any way to do this?

• Users getting 'flooded' with not read notifications (NRNs) for old emails and meeting requests

  I'm being placed under quite a lot of pressure from senior management over a relatively trivial issue. Basically the vast majority of users are complaining that they receive not read notifications (NRNs) for old emails and meeting requests in large numbers multiple times a day. I know something strange is happening because some are delivered at silly times in the morning (i.e 3AM or 4AM). The problem I have is that these some of these NRNs are from meeting requests and messages that are 120 days old, so some users have deleted the original message so I don’t actually know if the NRN is from an email or meeting request. • How to get full write permission on my second drive after dual boot?

  I had a WinXP installation on my hard drive. Then I bought a 2nd drive and installed Win7. Dual boot working fine. But when I'm in the Win7 environment, it appears that I don't have full admin permission on the "D" drive (that's the drive with WinXP). Even though the user I'm logged in as has admin permissions, I have to run my apps with administrator privileges in order to get write access to the D drive. This is not the case when I do stuff on the C drive. I could just get into running those apps that access the D drive in admin mode, but that seems like overkill. Is there some secret switch I can flip so that my D drive acts like my C drive, security-wise?

  I have one laptop used by one user that keeps getting the following error and is unable to log in. Trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain has failed Can anyone help tell me what is causing this and what I can do to stop it happening. I have tried reformatting which helps for a while, I have also tried reformatting with a new name which helped for a while. This problem has not affected any other user or computer which suggests it is not a problem with the domain but I don't know what to do to stop it happening.

• If my Remote Desktop Connection Broker server goes down, can users still access my two Terminal Servers?

  I would like to setup the Remote Desktop Connection Broker to allow better load balancing of the two terminal servers we have as well as allowing the user to re-establish to the correct server if they get disconnected. My worry is, if I set this up and the server this service is running goes down, does the terminal server stop accepting connections or will they just lose the benefit of having RDCB turned on? I don't want to add another point of failure in this equation unless I have to.

• Do I need a hardware firewall for Win 2003?

  We have had a Win 2003 server at a co-lo for a while. It is used as a web server and has a very cheap hardware firewall between it and the internet. Ports 3389 and 80 are the only ones forwarded to the server. I am doing some upgrading and wondering if I really need the firewall. Are there any drawbacks to just using the Win 2003 built in firewall to make sure only traffic on 3389 and 80 get through?

  I have the official Adobe x64 iFilter PDF plug-in and the FoxIt Software iFilter PDF plug-in installed, and neither one seems to be allowing me to index the contents of PDF files. So far, I've: Added my data folder into the Indexing service configuration Ensured that PDF files are configured to index "file properties and contents" Rebuilt the index from scratch But, when I search, I can only search for PDF file names, not the contents of them. Any ideas on how to debug this issue?

  Our company uses these fancy ShoreTel 230 phones. We make many phone calls from our custom built web based contact management system. It would be nice if our employees could click on a phone number from a webpage and have it automatically start dialing the number. (Similar to how iPhone handles this) Anyone every deploy something like this? I would imagine it would require some kind of background running ShoreTel process to accommodate this. 90% of our employees use PC (Windows 7) 10% use OS X Even a PC only solution would be great.   I am trying to print out information from the Task Scheduler from the local computer in a powershell script so other users can print out this information as well and not have to access the Task Scheduler. I need the script to print out the name, status, triggers, next run time, last run time, last run result, author and created. I can print out the information about the name, next run time, and last run time, but the rest wont print out when i run the script.   I have a media server located in a very inconvenient part of my house. Occasionally I will have to reset my router or it will reset itself. The issue is the PC loses connectivity for some reason, and I am forced to walk outside, around the house, into the basement, over a bunch of toys and weights and boxes, to push a button to reboot it. I would love to have it check itself every 5-10 minutes and auto reboot if it is unable to ping a given address/IP. Any ideas how to accomplish this?

  I have some demanding mysql queries that are needed to grap same up-to-date datasets from 5-7 mysql tables. I am thinking of creating a table or materialized view to gather all demanding columns from other tables, so as to increase performance. If I create that table, I may need to do extra insert / update / delete operation each time other tables updated. if I create materialized view, I am worrying if the performance can be greatly improved. Because data from other tables are changing very frequently. Most likely, the view may need to be created first everytime before selecting it. Any ideas? e.g. how to cache? other extra measures I can do?

  I know that the copy command has an option to automatically replace a file if it already exists, but I want to know if it is a way to copy the files only if they not already exist (/Y). I do not know the actual file names in the batch code, as I copy from the source using wildcards in the copy command: copy *.zip c:\destination The reason I want this instead of automatic overwrite is that the files are large, and to skip existing would save a lot of execution time.

  I am trying to provide taskpads to few admins to operate on few tasks delegated to them at OU level.I ran into the following problem; lets say i delegated access to the admin on OU X and which is ability to modify groups such as sample group X1 , he must be able to add any users from OU X to the group X1. The issue here is while testing i found out the admin can do the above but also can add a user Y1 from the OU Y(which he doesnt have delegated permissions) to the group X1.What am i missing? how to restrict admin from adding users out of OU to the groups he has modify access to? Please ask me if any more details/clarification required.

  I have searched all over the web but cannot find a complete answer to this: How to enable Bitlocker on a laptop with TPM, and store a file with the Bitlocker recovery key and TPM password by USING THE manage-bde command line tool. The file should be the same as when created in the Bitlocker manager UI. I DO NOT want to save to AD. The same question was asked here but was not answered correctly. The goal is to write a script to be used with an endpoint manager. I have tried the following: manage-bde -on C: Works fine, but does not create or save a key. manage-bde -on C: -rk C:\myfolder\ and manage-bde -on C: -RecoveryKey C:\myfolder\ -rp The output from the last two methods state that a key has been saved to c:\myfolder and so on, but that is not the case. It also says that I have to: Save the password in a secure location Insert a USB flash drive with an external key file into the computer. Restart and run hardware test type "manage-bde -status" to check if the hardware test succeeded After a restart, I get an error saying that Bitlocker could not be enabled because the bitlocker startup key or recovery kpassword cannot be found on the USB device.... C: was not encrypted. Why am I asked to insert a USB?? I simply want to encrypt the hard drive and save the recovery information to a file automatically. Is that too much to ask? Help please!

I would like something that can integrate with Exchange and Active Directory (in-phone searching/calling by name (is this possible using SIP ?), etc) and if possible something not too expensive (Bye bye Cisco !), what do you recommend me ? I've heard of 3CX as IPBX and Aastra as Phones, are they good for this ? Or do you know something else good at this ? I've also seen some Alcatel IP Phones doing this (search by name, but I think that was a separated address book and not loaded from AD/Exchange) Thank you !

• MS-DOS application sending screen output to LPT printer

  We have a MS-DOS application(coded in FoxPro), and recently had this glitch: the screen menu of the application without reason starts printing in an LPT Panasonic KX-1150 printer. It's a never ending print of all the screens of the application, as if the main output instead of sending it to the monitor, sends it to the printer! It creates a unnamed document with N/D pages and keeps printing forever. We have to turn the printer off and then kill the document in the spool to stop it... The printer is installed with a Generic/Text driver, and has happened to us both in WindowsXP and Win7. What can this be? Thanks in advance
