• iMac boot from linux partition on external drive

  I have the following "setup:" iMac (no internal drive/dead) --------- (Firewire) ------- [[MAC OS X]] | | | | (USB) | | | | [[MISC STORAGE PARTITION] [MISC STORAGE PARTITION] [EXT2 UBUNTU PARTITION]] I routinely use the firewire drive to boot MAC OS X. However, I would like to boot from the linux partition of the USB drive. This linux partition had linux installed on it from a live cd, and during that process, I told the installer to install GRUB on the usb drive (which happened to be /dev/sdd). My question is, how do I get this disk to show up during the iMac option-boot? Currently, only the firewire MAC OS X option shows up. I have read about rEFIT, but that appears to install it to the Mac OS X disk (would that still work?)... Also mentioned was installing rEFIT to the internal EFI system partition, but I don't know if that is wise.

• HTML5 Canvas Converting between cartesian and isometric coordinates

  I'm having issues wrapping my head around the Cartesian to Isometric coordinate conversion in HTML5 canvas. As I understand it, the process is two fold: (1) Scale down the y-axis by 0.5, i.e. ctx.scale(1,0.5); or ctx.setTransform(1,0,0,0.5,0,0); This supposedly produces the following matrix: [x; y] x [1, 0; 0, 0.5] (2) Rotate the context by 45 degrees, i.e. ctx.rotate(Math.PI/4); This should produce the following matrix: [x; y] x [cos(45), -sin(45); sin(45), cos(45)] This (somehow) results in the final matrix of ctx.setTransform(2,-1,1,0.5,0,0); which I cannot seem to understand... How is this matrix derived? I cannot seem to produce this matrix by multiplying the scaling and rotation matrices produced earlier... Also, if I write out the equation for the final transformation matrix, I get: newX = 2x + y newY = -x + y/2 But this doesn't seem to be correct. For example, the following code draws an isometric tile at cartesian coordinates (500, 100). ctx.setTransform(2,-1,1,0.5,0,0); ctx.fillRect(500, 100, width*2, height); When I check the result on the screen, the actual coordinates are (285, 215) which do not satisfy the equations I produced earlier... So what is going on here? I would be very grateful if you could: (1) Help me understand how the final isometric transformation matrix is derived; (2) Help me produce the correct equation for finding the on-screen coordinates of an isometric projection. • Install Base Transaction Error Troubleshooting

  Oracle Installed Base is an item instance life cycle tracking application that facilitates enterprise-wide life cycle item management and tracking capability.In a typical process flow a sales order is created and shipped, this updates Inventory and creates a new item instance in Install Base (IB).  The Inventory update results in a record being placed in the SFM Event Queue.  If the record is successfully processed the IB tables are updated, if there is an error the record is placed in the csi_txn_errors table and the error needs to be resolved so that the IB instance can be created.It's extremely important to be proactive and monitor IB Transaction Errors regularly.  Errors cascade and can build up exponentially if not resolved. Due to this cascade effect, error records need to be considered as a whole and not individually; the root cause of any error needs to be resolved first and this may result in the subsequent errors resolving themselves. • Software center is not working after attempt to install skype

  I am completely new person on Linux. I installed it just today and i have to say I like them a lot, until I faced the problem. I was looking on the internet but nothing worked for me. After i downloaded skype and tried to run it, software center showed up and was loading something for 5 mins. then it just dessapeared. Now everytime I try to turn it on, the window is gone after 3 sec. I tried to kill it but didnt really wokrked. • I'm using a compatible active DisplayPort to DVI adapter with EyeFinity, why does my monitor still flicker?

  I specifically chose an active DisplayPort <- DVI adapter for use with EyeFinity right out of my graphic card vendor's list of confirmed compatible adapters. Yet the screen fails horribly, it blinks on and off constantly, sometimes the graphics go screwy and the appropriate resolutions won't be available. Sometimes the resolution will be available but I'll discover it's only with interlaced refresh rates and bounces up and down. I have to switch the resolution back and forth, again and again, to get it to work correctly, and then it fails again and the process must be repeated the moment the monitor is turned off or I reboot. It's maddening. What is wrong? Is my GFX card supplying insufficient voltage? (Firmware tweaks allegedly help some people, but my card's isn't modifiable.) Could the adapter be defective? Is it not "active" enough for my card and I need an expensive powered adapter? Is this endemic to DisplayPort in general?

• SATA controller installed but not working? (No drives show up/Don't see card's BIOS)

  Hi, I have an old Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 SATA controller card. I put it in an old machine running Windows Server 2003. I booted the machine. The new hardware was detected. I installed the drivers. So now in Device Manager under "SCSI and RAID Controllers" I see "Win Server 2003 Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 Controller" and "Win Server 2003 Promise RAID Console SCSI Processor Device" I previously had the card in a machine that is now dead. When I booted that machine, during the boot process I would see the card info displayed and the drives that were attached. Boot would finish and my drives would be available. When I boot this new machine I never see that screen/text. No hard drives are available/visible. What am I missing? Thanks.

• Translating Documents from a Foreign Language into English on my Computer?

  I am aware that websites can be translated from many languages into English thanks to Google Translate. If I receive documentation via email that is in a language other than English, how straight forward is it to translate into English on my PC or Apple Mac? (indeed is Google Translate involved or is it strictly for websites) Similarly if I receive documentation via the normal postal mail service (termed "snail mail" if I'm correct) which needs to be translated into English, what steps need to be taken for this documentation to be translated effectively & quickly on my PC or Apple Mac (I am aware of the term Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, and is this costly, or do free alternatives exist to carry out the translation process solely online? ).

• Server suddenly running out of entropy

  Since a reboot yesterday, one of our virtual servers (Debian Lenny, virtualized with Xen) is constantly running out of entropy, leading to timeouts etc. when trying to connect over SSH / TLS-enabled protocols. Is there any way to check which process(es) is(/are) eating up all the entropy? Edit: What I tried: Adding additional entropy sources: time_entropyd, rng-tools feeding urandom back into random, pseudorandom file accesses – netted about 1 MiB additional entropy per second, problems still persisted Checking for unusual activity via lsof, netstat and tcpdump – nothing. No noticeable load or anything Stopping daemons, restarting permanent sessions, rebooting the entire VM – no change in behaviour What in the end worked: Waiting. Since about yesterday noon, there are no connection problems anymore. Entropy is still somewhat low (128 Bytes peak), but TLS/SSH sessions have no noticeable delay anymore. I'm slowly switching our clients back to TLS (all five of them!), but I don't expect any change in behavior now.

• Photo transfer problems from camera

  We have a digital camera (Cannon SX130 IS) which we often connect to the Ubuntu 12.10 desktop via USB in order to download the images. In past flavours of Linux (Mint 12 was most recent) it worked fine, however since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, the process fails after downloading a small number of the images. I can view the images which will be transferred in the preview window, and I can browse the camera file system to download the images manually, but if I just drag/drop the images over from camera to desktop, it freezes after 5-6 are copied over. I've been able to get around the problem by only copying 3-4 at a time, but when you have 100+ images to transfer, that gets really frustrating. Any advice on where I could start looking for answers, or how I could diagnose the source of the problem further? We have also had some issues with WireLess USB mice though it may not be related. I'm hoping my USB controller in the computer isn't dying... it's not that old. Also, it seems to work much better under Windows.

• Access Denied on LAN IIS Access via Integrated Authentication

  I have an IIS 7.5 (Win2k8R2) Webserver, which publishes an UNC Share (on a Fileserver) with restricted access. The AppPool Identity is a Domain User-Account with read access to mentioned UNC path. Authentication modes are set to Anonymous and Integration Authentication. When I access the path via localhost from the Webserver itself, it works, but if I try the Hostname or IP from either the Webserver or a Client, I get three authentication prompts (does not accept my credentials) and a 401.3 Unauthorized error message (but it states that I am logged in as my normal credentials which definitely have access rights to the UNC path and its files). Security Zone is set to Local Intranet. Sysiniternals Process Monitor lists CreateFile operations on the UNC path (and other existing files in it) with Access Denied and Impersonating on the correct credentials. I don't understand why it is not working, it seems to use the correct credentials on every step on the way but fails with is operations.

• NTFS write speed really slow (<15MB/s)

  I got a new Seagate 4TB harddrive formatted with ntfs using parted /dev/sda > mklabel gpt > mkpart pri 1 -1 mkfs.ntfs /dev/sda1 When copying files or testing writespeed with dd, the max writespeed I can get is about 12MB/s. The harddrive should be capable of atleast 100MB/s. top shows high cpu usage for the mount.ntfs process. The system has a AMD dualcore. This is the output of parted /dev/sda unit s print: Model: ATA ST4000DM000-1F21 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 7814037168s Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End Size File system Name Flags 1 2048s 7814035455s 7814033408s pri The used kernel is 3.5.0-23-generic. The ntfs-3g versions I tried are ntfs-3g 2012.1.15AR.1 (ubuntu 12.04 default) and the newest version ntfs-3g 2013.1.13AR.2. When formatted with ext4 I get good write speeds with about 140MB/s. How can I fix the writespeed?

• Unable to debug an encodded javascript?

  I’m having some problems debugging an encoded javacscript. This script I’m referring to given in this link over here. The encoding here is simple and it works by shifting the unicodes values to whatever Codekey was use during encoding. The code that does the decoding is given here in plain English below:- <script language="javascript"> function dF(s){ var s1=unescape(s.substr(0,s.length-1)); var t=''; for(i=0;i<s1.length;i++)t+=String.fromCharCode(s1.charCodeAt(i)-s.substr(s.length-1,1)); document.write(unescape(t)); } </script> I’m interested in knowing or understanding the values (e.g s1,t). Like for example when the value of i=0 what values would the following attributes / method would hold s1.charCodeAt(i) and s.substr(s.length-1,1) The reason I’m doing this is to understand as to how a CodeKey function really works. I don’t see anything in the code above which tells it to decode on the basis of codekey value. The only thing I can point in the encoding text is the last character which is set to 1 , 2 ,3 or 4 depending upon the codekey selected during encoding process. One can verify using the link I have given above. However, to debug, I’m using firebug addon with the script running as localhost on my wamp server. I’m able to put a breakpoint on the js using firebug but I’m unable to retrieve any of the user defined parameters or functions I mentioned above. I want to know under this context what would be best way to debug this encoded js.

• Why does my fan run so hard on my Dell XPS 15z?

  I recently bought a Dell XPS 15z. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium, but I really wanted to try out Ubuntu on it. I ran the Windows installer and was surprised how smooth the process was. Within 10 minutes, I had a dual boot setup with Ubuntu 11.10. It boots into Ubuntu just fine and everything seems to work. I've read a lot about problems with touchpad and wireless, but honestly, I've had none of those issues. The only thing that's really bothering me is the fan constantly runs fast. Under Windows, it rarely ever came on and when it did, it wasnt spinning that fast. What could be going on under Ubuntu that would cause this? I want to get that under control because I want to use Ubuntu as my primary OS and screw Windows. Any help would be much appreciated! Note: I've read that others have set acpi=false, but I have not made any changes to the default installation. Should I make that change?

• Problem identifying which page/page/function locks whole IIS server

  Hello, I have problem identifying which page/page/function locks whole IIS server. Out of the blue whole w3wp.exe jumps to CPU 90-98% usage. I have created 3 different application pools to see which w3wp.exe service locks the processor but I am unable to find out this information. I can only see that 2 of 3 services have 0-5% usage and one is jumping around 90-98% after some while. I think some process/function/redirect/sql is doing this but I would like to eliminate it. So far I am not even able to find the source of the problem. On my local development machine with VS2010 everything works like charm and I am unable to replicate problem. The server is windows 2k3 web server, sql server 2k5 and .net 4.0 Thank you for your help, links or any information on this issue. Fero

• What is the computer "doing" when it is running slow and task manager is not showing any CPU activity?

  Typical example is when shutting down a memoryintensive application. It can take quite a while before the computer gets back up to speed. Is there some inherent cost in releasing memory? Or is it throttled by some kind of harddrive activity, and if so is there any good way to track that? I usually bring up task manager when a computer is running slow, and usually sorting by cpu activity can show what process is causing the problem, but sometimes there is no activity showing. And yes I "show processes from all users", I have been wondering this since the days win2k :)

• Airpot Express configuration

  We are trying to set up remote access to a computer that houses a server fro a particular program we are running. The program says we need to configure the office router. In the firewall settings it says to open ports 5345-5351 (TCP only). Port Forwarding: You will also need to forward the same range of ports (5345-5351) to the computer running the Server. This typically requires that the computer running the Server be assigned a static IP on the local network. Having trouble figuring out which IP address we actually need to be using on the client side of this program in order to access the server computer. Can someone walk through this process?? We are working on Mac OSX 10.5. Thank you in advance!

  I have been stuck with setting up my virtual desktop on my ubuntu laptop. I am running ubuntu to ubuntu with x11vnc I start the process on my laptop as follows: " ssh -L5904:localhost:5900 -p Port remoteuser@remoteip." That command works, then I start x11vnc server, "x11vnc -noncache -once -shared -rfbauth ~/.vnc/passwd." This command works and starts connection. Then I open another window on my laptop and type, export VNC_VIA_CMD='/usr/bin/ssh -2 -c aes128-cbc -x -p Port -l User -f -: %L:%H:%R %G sleep 20' (not sure if works). then I type, vncviewer -endcodings Tight -depth 8 -quality 1 -via IPofremotemachine -u remoteuser localhost:01. The first time it work but from now on it just gives me the vncviewer -help screen everytime. I type in the password for my remote machine and then shows -help screen for vncviewer. • xinet vs iptables for port forwarding performance

  I have a requirement to run a Java based web server on port 80. The options are: Web proxy (apache, nginx etc.) xinet iptables setuid The baseline would be running the app using setuid but I'd prefer not to for security reasons. Apache is too slow and nginx doesn't support keep-alives so new connections are made for every proxied request. xinet is easy to set up but creates a new process for every request which I've seen cause problems in a high performance environment. The last option is port forwarding with iptables but I have no experience of how fast it is. Of course, the ideal solution would be to do this on a dedicated hardware firewall / load balancer but that's not an option at present.

• Black login screen Ubuntu 12.04 if WGA cable pluged in on reboot

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.1, 64 bits, installed on a Z77 Pro4 (ASrock motherboard), crucial M4 SSD drive (sata 3), and intel i5 3570k (ivy bridge). I have this annoying problem : When I startup the computer, I get a CLI login prompt : At this moment, if I press enter, i get the usual CLI login prompt. If not, here is what I get : From now, if I login using CLI, i identify the lightdm processus, kill and start it : #ps -A | grep lightdm #sudo kill -9 1273 #sudo lightdm and miracle, these commands bring back the gui login screen. BUT It's very annoying as I have to repeat these steps at every boot, and the people using this desktop are not familiar with linux at all! So I tried to figure out the cause and here is what I found : If, when I shutdown the computer, the WGA cable is not pluged in, then Ubuntu will boot on GUI login screen without a glitch! But If the WGA cable is pluged in when shuting down, I will get CLI login prompt... Note 1: I installed linux kernel 3.4, but it hasn't solve the problem. Note 2: Is it linked to the new HD 4000 integrated graphic processor ? Note 3: If i boot on an USB stick (Ubuntu 12.04), NO problems ! Note 4: If booting on the SSD, when clicking "shutdown" button, the shutdown process never ends up (logout screen keep displaying and fans are still rolling). But if booting on USB stick, the shutdown action runs properly.

• Is it possible to upgrade using the Windows Server 2012 evaluation?

  I've got a Windows Server 2008 Standard installation here that I'm trying to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Server, using the evaluation version. (The scenario is essentially that I need to test the upgrade, and specifically the upgrade process, before we spend the money on going ahead with the actual upgrade.) When I try to upgrade, it fails with the message: "Windows Server 2008 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new... (etc., etc.)" Is this (non-upgradability) a known limitation of the evaluation version? (Unfortunately, I haven't found a clear answer on this point.) And if not, any thoughts on where else I might look for the problem and solutions to it?

• Entity system in Lua, communication with C++ and level editor. Need advice.

  Hi!, I know this is a really difficult subject. I have been reading a lot this days about Entity systems, etc... And now I'm ready to ask some questions (if you don't mind answering them) because I'm really messed. First of all, I have a 2D basic editor written in Qt, and I'm in the process of adding entitiy edition. I want the editor to be able to receive RTTI information from entities to change properties, create some logic being able to link published events to published actions (Ex:A level activate event throws a door open action), etc... Because all of this I guess my entity system should be written in scripting, in my case Lua. In the other hand I want to use a component based design for my entities, and here starts my questions: 1) Should I define my componentes en C++? If I do this en C++ won't I loose all the RTTI information I want for my editor?. In the other hand, I use box2d for physics, if I define all my components in script won't it be a lot of work to expose third party libs to lua? 2) Where should I place the messa system for my game engine? Lua? C++?. I'm tempted to just have C++ object to behave as servers, offering services to lua business logic. Things like physics system, rendering system, input system, World class, etc... And for all the other things, lua. Creation/Composition of entities based on components, game logic, etc... Could anyone give any insight on how to accomplish this? And what aproach is better?. I heard of Nagios, Zabbix and Pandora but not sure if they provide such interface.
