• Hardware compatibility on H97 chipset/hardware support

  I am aware that there is documentation about compatibility but it is way out dated. I am also aware that there is a hardware compatibility page on Ubuntu website, but that one is focused on the whole box rather than a single piece of hardware. I have some experience with Linux OS, and some experience playing Ubuntu Server in a virtual machine, but never worked on a machine that lives in the real internet. I am building a home server with an Intel H97 chipset motherboard. I have looked at several models and none of them has Linux in the supported OS category. I have the experience of installing Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 on my 4-years-old lap top, and except for some system errors on start up, there is not too much I can complain about, so I guess I should be fine. However, this time I am going to install Ubuntu Server 14.04 on a relatively new piece of hardware(I went to http://linux-drivers.org/ but found nothing really helpful). For example the ASUS motherboard has M.2 socket and Intel LAN I218V chip, the Gigabyte motherboard has two LAN chips(Intel LAN WGI217V and ATHEROS AR8161-BL3A-R). So I really want to make sure everything will work. Usually I would just trust Ubuntu and buy all hardware I need, but basing on my past experience with the Ubuntu Desktop version on my lap top, I am not so convinced. There is an easily noticeable difference: when the system is idle, the fan runs much more frequently and longer under Ubuntu. This leads to my suspicion that generally hardware will have worse support for Ubuntu, which is no surprising at all but enough for me to put this post here. And as far as I know, some Intel CPU features come with software that usually will not run under Linux. Any help, idea or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

• Does Apache2 Configured as ReverseProxy Hide Cookies Set by Backend Servers?

  I use Apache 2.2.16 as Reverse Proxy. For a static website, I don't have any issues. However, when began to use cookies, I've noticed that cookies are not being sent to the client. Is this an expected behaviour for Apache2? I'm using HAProxy for another application that sends cookies to the client and I get all of them.

I want to specify OS/RAM/HDD size/CD drive/screen resolution/battery life. I have found several sites so far where I can specify everything except battery life. Does such a site exist? I know that this is not a shopping site - but before any moderator rushes to close this question - please note that I am not asking "where do I buy this laptop" - merely what laptop fits this specs. I don't even care what country the website is based in.

  I'm using suexec to ensure that PHP scripts (and other CGI/FastCGI apps) are run as the account holder associated with the relevant virtual host. This allows for securing each users' scripts from reading/writing by other users. However, it occurs to me that this opens up a different security hole. Previously, the web server ran as an unprivileged user, with read-only access to user's files (unless the user changed the file permissions for some reason). Now, the web user can also write to user's files. So while I've prevented different users taking advantage of each other's scripts, I've made it so that in the event that some application has a remote code injection vulnerability, it now has not only read access but also write access to all that user's scripts and website. How can I deal with this? One idea I've had is to create a second user account for each user account in the system, so that each user has their own user account, and all their scripts are run under another user account. But that seems cumbersome.

• Data transfer between "main" site and secured virtual subsite

  I am currently working on a C# ASP.Net 3.5 website I wrote some years ago which consists of a "main" public site, and a sub-site which is our customer management application, using forms-based authentication. The sub-site is set up as a virtual folder in IIS and though it's a subfolder of "main", it functions as a separate web app which handles CRUD access to our customer database and is only accessible by our staff. The main site currently includes a form for new leads to fill in, which generates an email to our sales staff so they can contact them and convince them to become customers. If that process is successful, the staff manually enter the information from the email into the database. Not surprisingly, I now have a new requirement to feed the data from the new lead form directly into the database so staff can just check a box for instance to turn the lead into a customer. My question therefore is how to go about doing this? Possible options I've thought of: Move the new lead form into the customer database subsite (with authentication turned off). Add database handling code to the main site. (No, not seriously considering this duplication of effort! :) Design some mechanism (via REST?) so a webpage outside the customer database subsite can feed data into the customer database How to organise the code for this situation, preferably with extensibility in mind, and particularly are there any options I haven't thought of?

• IIS exclude specific host?

  I have an IIS server running several websites. It is stationed behind an ISA server of which I do not have access. But I do have all of the defined websites (on port 80) routed to my server. So I want to take down one website, say it's foo.bar.com and in its place setup a LAMP server instead using a VM software. It needs to run alongside all the existing websites and it should not interfere with them. I have full control over my server, but not the ISA. Is this possible? If so, how? The OS is Win Server 2003 Standard with IIS6

• Why is my Ubuntu 10.10 CD not booting?

  I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and burned the ISO but it will not boot. I discarded problems with the ISO, as I've downloaded from the official website with no errors, and burned it with no errors. I discarded problems with the burning, as looks like it was recorded with no errors here and later in another computer. I discarded problems with my DVD reader as other cds boots fine. I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.10, I know I can upgrade via internet, but I have this same problem with my Windows XP cd, so I really would like to discover what's going on here.. My Ubuntu 9.10 cd boots just right, but the new one not. What else can be? Or what more precise tests can I make to discover where's the problem? --More info What happens when I try to boot with the Ubuntu 10.10 cd is that it behavior like there's no bootable cd in the drive. It just don't find the boot on the cd, and start the HD system. My notebook is an Amazon PC Intel Celeron 1.5 with 2Gb memory, a DVD-RW driver, HD samsung with 260GB.

• Godaddy vs. Route53 for DNS

  I have my website set up as an EC2 instance and my DNS is currently Godaddy. I'm considering switching to Amazon AWS Route53 for DNS. The one thing I noticed however is that Route53 charges monthly fees but I never get any bills from Godaddy. Obviously, nobody likes getting charged for something they can get for free. If Godaddy is cheaper, can anyone confirm that the page load speed of an EC2 instance is actually better via Route53 vs. Godaddy? If it is not faster or cheaper, can someone point out other reasons it might make sense to do this switch? thanks, tim

  I'm running nginx wordpress server in KVM using 12.04 server x86. It was running very well about 4 month until 2 hours ago. I found that my website is down and no ping response. Virt-manager logged high cpu load(plz see the picture below) before unexpected shut down. I want to know what process caused unexpected shutdown. The following log files make me think my server is attacked. Any suggestions and help would be appreciated. kern.log and syslog showed me same output.   Firefox doesn't exit when I close the last tab, just by doing some customization in about:config. But now, my company has to work with some website that only works well on Internet Explorer. I currently use Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP SP3. So, how do I prevent Internet Explorer 8 from exiting when closing the last tab?   Hello...We have website and one of our customers complains that when he launches the URL there is a blank popup that appears on his window. He uses IE 7. We have tried to reproduce the same behaviour in our local PC's but we are not able to do so. The site opens up perfectly fine in our systems. We suspect that it could be due to a different Service Pack installed on the customer's PC. Is there a way we can find out which SP is he running on. What would be the simplest process which we can then pass on to the customer to know which SP is he running on?

  My title is probably not very clear but here's the deal. I'm a software engineer with experience in many languages but my current focus is Windows/Web applications using C# and .NET. I'm currently running a personal blog using WordPress and love it. I need to setup a website for my consulting company and, while I enjoy the canned benefits of a CMS like WordPress, would like to build a custom ASP.NET site. Either way my current LAMP host is not secure so I'm looking to switch and looking for a reliable alternative. My ultimate wish list of requirements would be a cost-effective (currently spending ~$120/yr for web+domain hosting) host that would allow me to deploy my own ASP.NET code and host a WordPress blog (IIS w/ PHP to external MySQL or separate LAMP site). Thanks in advance for your recommendations (Google is not good for this type of search :-D) Edit: I'm fine if I have to ditch WordPress. Really I'm just looking for a good ASP.NET host, the WordPress compatibility would be a plus.

• Dlink DWA-643 ExpressCard / Atheros AR5008 can't connect to wifi networks

  I've just purchased a D-Link DWA-643 Xtreme N ExpressCard Notebook Adapter - but it can't connect to my wireless network The card is listed on the FSF website and - refer links below: http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/index_html/net/wireless/index_html/cards.html http://www.dlink.com.au/products/?pid=550 Ubuntu see the card as using the Atheros AR5008 chipset - refer image below The card lights up and I can see that available wifi networks using this card - so it seems to 'just work' on ubuntu 12.04 but when i try and connect to my networks - it fails I've tried setting the network to all the different options (WEP, WPA2, no encryption, etc.. b/g/n ) but ubuntu sill cant connect to it I've also installed wicd but still couldn't connect Has anyone got a DWA-643 to work in Ubuntu? Or does anyone have any suggestion on how to get it to connect?? Any help would be greatly appreciated Note: the laptop has built in wifi but its broadcom, works but with dialup speed connection - and i've had nothign but trouble using the boardcom drivers so purchased the FSF recommended PCI expresscard as i hoped it would 'just work' on the latest Ubuntu i've have tried to disable the built in wifi - broadcom - but even with the broadcom uninstall and unavailable it didnt help the dlink to connect previously I had MAC address filtering on the router - i've added the dlinks MAC - and also disabled MAC address filtering - still no luck lspci output below: 18:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. • Locally redirect Domain1.com to Domain2.com/subdir on one computer

  I am running a FreeBSD server and I want to redirect a specific website domain to another domain including subdirectory. I want to bypass that domain to alter the XML results it returns. I tried the hosts file solution, but that way I can only redirect to an IP address without subdir. So that's no solution. Is there another way to solve this? Installing something on the server if needed is not a problem. Unless it's a heavy program.

• Transfer page from internal to external

  Afternoon all! Currently I have a website with a list of audio products (essentially a search engine for audio deals). http://www.soundplaza.co.uk Once you go to the details page, you can then press the 'view deal' button to go to providers site e.g. = http://www.soundplaza.co.uk/all-deals/113/bookshelf-speakers/acoustic-energy-1 This jump between two sites is a bit harsh and I would like to show a transition page, to simply ease them into another site and not scare them off. Within this tradition page I will have a simple loading gif and some graphics showing that your transferring. QUESTION: What is the best way to send the details (link, product name etc) to this transfer page, to then wait 5 seconds, to then move on to the desired link... this can in NO WAY damage my SEO, if anything rel="nofollow" would be great if possible. Currently I have seen that you can submit form to the transition page, then you can use php sleep and then php header to transfer... however I am not sure if php header will transfer SEO value tot he provider? Any opinions would be great! Thanks

• Authentication system brainstorm

  Hi. We got multiple small websites (microsites) and one main high traffic one with big users base. Right now the requirement is to build authentication system which should allow users to loign with the same identity across the network. All website are running on different domains, powered by Drupal 6 CMS and have separate databases (so sharing tables with prefix is not an option + it creates a huge mess in the db). Here is the set of core requirements I came up with: Users should be able to login with the same credentials to all sites within the network User’s data sharing between Main site (storage) and all micro sites within the network Data synchronization across the network when user changes the data (update email or password for example) The login/registration process should be seamless and consistent Register on any of the sites across the network and use that identity to login later on. In the future there might be a need to add openid authentication options. Basically we are looking at something similar stackexchange does, but not sure if they have central users base on not. I was thinking about custom solution which will include 2 parts (modules), one will be stored on the Main site for users data storing and responding to requests from clients. Second part (module) will be placed on each microsite, which is going to send requests to the Master. Some kind of client - server setup. One of the complications I see right away is #3. Data Synhcronization across the network. I just don't want to reinvent the wheel and maybe some work is already done in this direction. Looking forward to your ideas on how to approach this project.   I have share my wamp over my personal LAN . (Server IP : 192.168.0.100) When I am trying to access wamp server it's working perfectly. But when I open website hosted on server using client machine (192.168.0.103) , it doesn't load CSS - Images and JS files. So I saw console and found that my browser is trying to load : localhost//mysite/css/style.css And failing to load resource. now when I try to load the same resource directly from browser using 192.168.0.100/mysite/css/style.css It's showing me css file ! Now I am confused how to solve this problem so that my browser load that css perfectly ! Please help me ! thanks in advance !

• Changing Servers - Redirect to new IP = No Downtime?

  I am changing servers of my website. The IP of old server cannot be moved to the new one. To have no downtime I am planing to do the following, please someone confirm it will work: Setup the new server and listen on the new IP Old server redirect all traffic to the new IP Change DNS records to point to the new IP My logic tells me that when I redirect to the new IP from my old box, the user will not see the domain name in the browser but will see the new IP. Is there a way to redirect to the new IP and send along the HOSTNAME with it so that the user will see the domain name in the browser? Im doing this because the site is in constant use and simply changing DNS settings won't do as database won't be synced between the new and old servers during propagation.
