C# socket blocking behavior

My situation is this : I have a C# tcp socket through which I receive structured messages consisting of a 3 byte header and a variable size payload. The tcp data is routed through a network of tunnels and is occasionally susceptible to fragmentation. The solution to this is to perform a blocking read of 3 bytes for the header and a blocking read of N bytes for the variable size payload (the value of N is in the header). The problem I'm experiencing is that occasionally, the blocking receive operation returns a partial packet. That is, it reads a volume of bytes less than the number I explicitly set in the receive call. After some debugging, it appears that the number of bytes it returns is equal to the number of bytes in the Available property of the socket before the receive op. This behavior is contrary to my expectation. If the socket is blocking and I explicitly set the number of bytes to receive, shouldn't the socket block until it recv's those bytes?, any help, pointers, etc would be much appreciated.

What's the best way to format long strings of HTML in PHP?

I know it's really a subjective question, but for best-practices (and readability), I can't seem to get a fix on the best way to format long strings of HTML. I typically do it like this: echo ' <div> <p>Content Inside</p> <div class="subbox"> <ul> <li>etc.</li> <li>etc.</li> <li>etc.</li> <li>etc.</li> </ul> </div> </div> '; But I still don't like the outcome, especially if this appears in the middle of a large block of code. It just feels messy.

google spreadsheet api from android: google-api-java-client or handmade?

For working with google spreadsheet api from android (2.2) - google suggests using google-api-java-client for android. For that you have to include 5 jars to your android application: guava-r09.jar google-http-client-extensions-android2-1.6.0-beta.jar google-api-client-extensions-android2-1.6.0-beta.jar google-http-client-1.6.0-beta.jar google-api-client-1.6.0-beta.jar and digging into google-api-java-client javadocs for fast-changing api. Does it worth the effort? in term of android specifics and device fragmentation? Isn't it reasonable to write your own simple http response parser or take small existing library like google-spreadsheet-lib-android ? Thanks! UPD: choosed google-api-java-client finally as it has all routine stuff (like parsing http, xml) out of box

Android application not working on 1.5 firmware?

Android: Using GEO uri

Hi, I have read the doc and some tutorials to get a .kml file working launching the google maps activity. When I hosted the file in a server, this works perfectly: Intent myIntent = new Intent( android.content.Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse("geo:0,0?q=http://somedomain.com/file.kml") ); Now, reading this link on how to use intents for gmaps with the developing stage of GEO uri I can't manage how to load a kml file from within the device, I have tried with "q=file:///path-to-file.kml" and with an absolute path too. Has anyone done this yet? PS: in IRC channel recommend me to use apps based on openstreetmaps, but the docs is much more poor than the gmaps doc althought they are OS.

Update table rows in a non-sequential way using the output of a php script

I need to monitor several devices by querying theyr mysql database and gather some informations. Then these informations are presented to the operator in an html table. I have wrote a php script wich loads devices from a multidimensional array, loops through the array and gather data and create the table. It comes out that when devices are too much and internet connection is not that fast, the script times out, even if i dramatically increase the timeout period. So it is impossible even to load the page the first time... Therefore I would like to change my code so that I can handle each row as a single entity, with its own refresh period. So when the user first loads the page, he sees n rows (one per device) with the ajax loader image... then an update cycle should start independently for each row, so that the user sees data gathered from each database... then ajax loader when the script is trying to retrieve data, then the gathered data once it has been collected or an error message stating that it is not possible to gather data since hour xx:yy:zz. So rows updating should be somewhat independent from the others, like if each row updating was a single closed process. So that rows updating is not done sequentially from the first row to the last. I hope I've sufficiently detailed my problem. Currently I feel like I am at a dead-end. Could someone please show me somewhere to start from?

Cannot save model due to bad transaction? Django

Trying to save a model in Django admin and I keep getting the error: Transaction managed block ended with pending COMMIT/ROLLBACK I tried restarting both the Django (1.2) and PostgreSQL (8.4) processes but nothing changed. I added "autocommit": True to my database settings but that didn't change anything either. Everything that Google has turned up has either not been answered or the answer involved not having records in the users table, which I definitely have. The model does not have a custom save method and there are no pre/post save signals tied to it. Any ideas or anything else I can provide to make answering this easier?

weird space in IE - Any suggestions?

The below table is the only element inside a body tag - This displays fine in Firefox 3 as i expect it to be but it does not look good in IE7. There is a weird space just between the nested table and the row above. Determine cluster size of file system in Python

I would like to calculate the "size on disk" of a file in Python. Therefore I would like to determine the cluster size of the file system where the file is stored. How do I determine the cluster size in Python? Or another built-in method that calculates the "size on disk" will also work. I looked at os.path.getsize but it returns the file size in bytes, not taking the FS's block size into consideration. I am hoping that this can be done in an OS independent way...

Hi all, I was just wondering, is Graphics.DrawImage() asynchronous? How to get flash player to display under content on a PC?

Long story short, I'm developing a theme template for a blog that enables you to view the posts in blocks. The main part of the post is displayed at first, then the secondary content is displayed over that when you hover over the post block. Everything works fine on a Mac Versions of all major browsers, but start browsing on a PC, and all hell breaks loose when you start trying to display content over Flash Video embeds. The flash element remains visible over the content. It's completely unusable. From a PC, you can view an example of the problem here: http://photorific.tumblr.com I'm almost certain this is a bug in the Flash Plugin for Windows, but I was wondering if anyone else had come across this problem before, and if there were any solutions. This problem has presented itself for a while now and any help would be really, really, really appreciated!

What mail storage should I choose for our web application; IMAP, key-valud store, rdbms, ...

I have to store e-mail messages for use with our application. I have "metadata" for all messages inside a relational database, but I don't feel comfortable keeping message content (gigabytes and terabytes of email data) inside a database. I'm currently using IMAP as a storage, but I have my doubts if I choose correctly. First of all there is a problem of uidvalidity and how to keep a permanent reference to message inside IMAP. Second, I'm not sure if this is the most robust solution in terms of backup/restore strategies, corruption of store, replication ... Positive side is that I can query IMAP using the headers because the data is mostly indexed. I don't know if key-value stores are a better approach (Casandra, Tokyo cabinet, redis). How they handle storing 1KB and 50MB of data. How they prevent corruption and when corruption or device failure happens how can I repair the store.

How can two threads access a common array of buffers with minimal blocking ? (c#)

Hello, I'm working on an image processing application where I have two threads on top of my main thread: 1 - CameraThread that captures images from the webcam and writes them into a buffer 2 - ImageProcessingThread that takes the latest image from that buffer for filtering. The reason why this is multithreaded is because speed is critical and I need to have CameraThread to keep grabbing pictures and making the latest capture ready to pick up by ImageProcessingThread while it's still processing the previous image. My problem is about finding a fast and thread-safe way to access that common buffer and I've figured that, ideally, it should be a triple buffer (image[3]) so that if ImageProcessingThread is slow, then CameraThread can keep on writing on the two other images and vice versa. What sort of locking mechanism would be the most appropriate for this to be thread-safe ? I looked at the lock statement but it seems like it would make a thread block-waiting for another one to be finished and that would be against the point of triple buffering. JNI: Passing multiple parameters in the function signature for GetMethodID

I am trying to execute a function in Java (from C) that has the following signature: public void execute(int x, int y, int action); My problem is to define the function signature in GetMethodID: env->GetMethodID(hostClass, "execute", "(I;I;I;)V"); The problem I ma getting is: W/dalvikvm( 1849): Bogus method descriptor: (I;I;I;)V W/dalvikvm( 1849): Bogus method descriptor: (I;I;I;)V D/dalvikvm( 1849): GetMethodID: method not found: Lcom/device/client/HostConnection;.execute:(I;I;I;)V I am not sure how to specify the method signature in GetMethodID (for 3 integers as parameters). I saw people use the ";" to separate parameters in other posts for the String and File class, but nothing with primitives like integer. What would be the correct way to do this please? Thank you.

JQuery with SMARTY php

This might seem a very noob question but I haven't found the answer yet. I have a header.tpl file which contains xhtml code. I want to and some java script to it using jquery. But my problem is that it simple doesn't happen what I tell it to do. Because the page hoster comiples php with SMARTY I had to make a small change to the block script, which was had the {literal} {/literal}. But the rest seems ok. Btw the jquery.js is on the same folder as the header.tpl. File header.tpl http://feupload.fe.up.pt/get/SQWJvybQkDCmjEG PS: I event replaced all the code by the getstarted tutorial on the jquery homepage and added the {literlar} {/literal} (otherwise it would give an error) and it steel didn't work

How can I copy from the browser and paste to vim without unicode problems

This happens to me all the time: I copy something from a rich text screen (usually a browser) and then paste it into vim. Usually its a code block and then when I go to compile or run or what have you I get all kind of bazaar errors. I scratch my head, and then spend half an hour trying to figure out what is wrong before I realize I've copied some non ASCII characters: dashes, left and right quotes, long underscores, multiplication signs in place of x's, etc. So I ask you: how can I copy non-ASCII into my VIM session without error? Is there a paste mode that automatically 'down samples' unicode to ASCII? Is there a quick/dirty search for non ASCII characters in a file?

How to rotate a UIImageView?

It's quite frustrating not to be able to do such a simple task: I have an "app" with a single viewcontroller, and in it a single UIImageView, that's initialized to a specific image at potrtait mode. Now when the iPhone gets roteated to landscape mode and the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation event fires, at which I return YES, my resulting UIImageView looks totally screwed up: either the image is stretched so to fill landscape mode frame (which looks ridiculuous of course) or the top and bottom of the image are cropped. How can I have my UIImageview and the contained image handle the device rotation gracefully, and display normal looking image at landscape mode as well?

Asp.net error object not set to a reference

Hi all, Because I rush in development (a lot of whip cracking here) and declare my objects at the top of the function and instantiate inside my try-catch block, I get a lot of the good old "object not set to an instance of an object" errors while doing TDD, and later if I do miss a branch that object was used in (doing VB now, would prefer C#) or just in every day coding, object not set to an instance of an object is a bit vague. Sure the stack trace sends me to the line the error occured at, but it would be nice if I could modify my logging to either name the object or its type because sometimes I have multiple objects on the same line. It's not the end of the world, but in the end it would save me a few minutes each day. Any ideas on how I can pass the info on which object wasn't set? Thanks

Ruby on Rails - Send JavaScript to view

Hey, I am creating a website in Ruby on Rails. I have a controller action that renders a view like so: def show time_left = Time.now.to_i - 3.hours.to_i @character = current_user.characters.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| format.html # show.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @character } end end This is fine as it renders the show.html.erb as I like. I would like however to somehow pass time_left to the view as a Javascript variable as this value is use by a countdown JQuery plugin. I could put a javascript block on the page in the HTML and print a instance variable out like so: <script type="javascript"> $('#countdown').countdown('<%= @time_left =>')</script> But I would like to keep all my JS in a external file and off the page could anyone give some advice on how to implement this? Difference in select for update of ... in Oracle Database 10g and 11g

Hi, I found out that Oracle Database 10g and 11g treat the following PL/SQL block differently (I am using scott schema for convenience): DECLARE v_ename bonus.ename%TYPE; BEGIN SELECT b.ename INTO v_ename FROM bonus b JOIN emp e ON b.ename = e.ename JOIN dept d ON d.deptno = e.deptno WHERE b.ename = 'Scott' FOR UPDATE OF b.ename; END; / While in 10g (10.2) this code ends successfully (well NO_DATA_FOUND exception is raised but that is expected), in 11g (11.2) it raises exception "column ambiguously defined". And that is definitely not expected. It seems like it does not take into account table alias because I found out that when I change the column in FOR UPDATE OF e.empno (also does not work) to e.mgr (which is unique) it starts working. So is this some error in 11g? Any thoughts?

How to distinguish properties from constants if they both use PascalCasing for naming?

As stated in the framework design guidelines and the WWW in general, the current guideline is to name your constants like this LastTemplateIndex as opposed to LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX With the PascalCasing approach, how do you differentiate between a Property and a Constant. ErrorCodes.ServerDown is fine. But what about private constants within your class ? I use quite a lot of them for naming magic numbers.. or for expected values in my unit tests and so on. The ALL_CAPS style helps me know that it is a constant . _testApp.SelectTemplate(LAST_TEMPLATE_INDEX); *Disclosure: I have been using the SCREAMING_CAPS style for a while for constants + I find it more readable than squishedTogetherPascalCasedName.
