• MPMediaPickerController for selecting video files

  Hey, I want to enable the user to select a video file from the on-device iPod library (so that I can play it in my own app). Is that possible? I was thinking on using MPMediaPickerController but I am not sure if it is able to select video files or just audio files. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

• Problem getting weeks in a month...

  I am creating a calendar control of sorts... One thing I need to know is how many weeks are there in a Month... So NSCalendar rangeOfUnit:inUnit:forDate Seems to be exactly what I need... Except I am noticing something that seems off and I can't quite figure out why this is happening... The following code... Any clues? Edit on 3/20/2010: Seeing as how I couldnt use rangeOfUnit:inUnit:forDate to calculate the number of weeks in a month. I decided to figure out a different way of calculating the same value. I figured I should do this in a non-Gregorian localized way, so I attempted to start with getting the number of days in a week, but I got the result of 28 days in a week. So I started writing more code to figure out why... I wanted to make sure that the type of NSCalendar that I was playing with was in fact what I was supposed to be getting... • release does not free up memory in low-memory condidtion

  I am trying to follow the Apple's recommendation to handle low-memory warnings (found in Session 416 of WWDC 2009 videos) by freeing up resources used by freeing up my dataController object (referenced in my app delegate) that contains a large number of strings for read from a plist: - (void)applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning:(UIApplication *)application { [_dataController release]; _dataController = nil; NSLog([NSString stringWithFormat:@"applicationDidReceiveMemoryWarning bottom... retain count:%i", [_dataController retainCount]]); } But when I run ObjectAlloc within Instruments and simulate a Low-Memory Condition, I don't see a decrease in the memory used by my app even though I see the NSLog statements written out and the retain count is zero for the object. I do pass references to the app delegate around to some of the view controllers. But the code above releases the reference to the _dataController object (containing the plist data) so I would expect the memory to be freed. Any help would be appreciated.

• Why the CCLayer can't use a for loop in draw method??

  I have a CClayer, that have a draw method, every second, it will call the draw method 60 times. So, I have method like this: -(void)draw{ glEnable(GL_LINE_SMOOTH); glColor4f(0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f); glLineWidth(5.0f); ccDrawLine(ccp(300,20), CGPointZero); } I work great. but after I added a for looop, for example....: -(void)draw{ glEnable(GL_LINE_SMOOTH); glColor4f(0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f); glLineWidth(5.0f); ccDrawLine(ccp(300,20), CGPointZero); for(int i=0; i<5; i++){ NSLog(@"Testing the loop, %i", i); } } It can't draw anything, the screen only black. But I can see the Testing the loop is keep calling.... Why? thank you.

• MKMapView Not Loading When Called on an NSThread?

  I am creating a MKMapView in a method named "generateMap". From inside viewDidLoad, this works: [self generateMap]; but this causes the map to quickly load and then disappear, leaving only the blank grey grid: [NSThread detachNewThreadSelector:@selector(spinTheSpinner) toTarget:self withObject:nil]; Any ideas why this might be happening when I call the method through a thread?

• UITableViewCells appear behind backgroundView

  I am having a problem setting the background of UITableView to a UIImageView (see below for why I am doing this), once the view is set, it works fine, and scrolls with the UITableView, but it hides the elements of the Table View. I need to have a UIImageView as the background for a UITableView.   I have a subtitle text file that works with standart srt format 00:00:00,000 Hour, minutes, seconds, milliseconds. I want to create a timer to update the subtitle screen and check the current time to know what subtitle show on screen. Which is the best to use? NSTimeInterval, NSDate? I think the best is to convert all to times to milliseconds number and compare. But NSTimeInterval works with seconds, not milliseconds. Some clue? Marcos

• Why is my toolbar not visible when in landscape mode?

  My aim was to get the application functioning in both landscape and portrait mode, and all I could figure out to do it was this code below. The app was working fine in portrait, but when switched to landscape, the text wouldn't expand (to the right) to fill up the additional space. I made sure my springs/struts where set, and that the parents had "allowResizing" selected in IB. • How to add a view on top of a UIPopoverController

  I've got an iPad app with a “drawer” table displayed in a popover. The user can tap-and-hold on an item in the drawer to drag that item out of it and into my main view. That part works fine; unfortunately, the view being dragged appears under the popover, and is too small to be visible until it's dragged out from underneath it. If I add the view as a subview of the view controller in the popover, it gets clipped by the popover's frame, and as I can't access the UIPopoverController's view, I can't disable its layer's masksToBounds—and that probably wouldn't be a great idea anyway. I suspect that I could use an additional UIWindow with a high windowLevel value to force the dragged view to appear on top of the popover, but this seems like overkill. Is there a better solution?

• Modal View Controller Undesirably Hides Tab Bar

  I am working on an application that requires user authentication to access a profile. The profile section is located solely under one tab (and all others tabs do not require authentication). I currently present a authentication view controller modally (and then dismiss on success) when the user selects the profile tab. However, this approach prevents the user from deciding not to register / login (that is, all tabs are hidden once the authentication screen is presented modally). I don't want the user to be able to dismiss the modal view controller, but rather have it modal only for the profile tab. Is this possible? Can I have tabs visible while having a modal view controller? What is the best approach here. Thanks.

• Changing UITableViewCell textLabel background color to clear

  In my app i have a table view with customViewCells. i subclassed the UITableViewCell class and added an image that will load async and for the text i use cell.textLabel.text = @"someThext". for the cells the background color is set alternatively to [UIColor darkGrayColor] and whitecolor. When i run the app in the simulator and on the pone the textLabel of the cell has the background white. I want to set it to be clear, because i want the background color of the cell to be full not a strip then white then another strip. in the init method of my custom cell i added hoping that the white will turn into red but it doesn't have any effect. [self.textLabel setBackgroundColor:[UIColor redColor]]; i tried also self.textLabel.backgroundColor = [UIColor redColor]; but this also didn't work...if i add a UILabel as a subview the background color of the label can be set..but i don't want to do that because when i rotate the phone i want my labels to auto enlarge... any ideas why setting the background color of cell.textLabel doesn't work? thank you

• How does UIImage work in low-memory situations?

  According to the UIImage documentation: In low-memory situations, image data may be purged from a UIImage object to free up memory on the system. Does anyone know how this works? It appears that this process is completely transparent and will occur in the background with no input from me, but I can't find any definitive documentation one way or the other. Second, will this data-purge occur when the image is not loaded by me? (I'm getting the image from UIImagePicker). Here's the situation: I'm taking a picture with the UIImagePickerController and and immediately taking that image and sending it to a new UIViewController for display. Sending the raw image to the new controller crashes my app with memory warnings about 30% of the time. Resizing the image takes a few moments, time that I'd rather not spend if there's a 3rd option available to me.

  Hello, I would like to use UINavigationBar without decoration. I.e. I would like to create my own custom buttons and link those to the same actions (e.g. back) as the navigation items were linked to and have no bar presented at the top. I was told that one should use navigation bar even though graphically you should design the interaction yourself. How do I go about doing this? I am quite new to navigation bar to start with... Although, again, the NSLog had the value in it correctly? So i searched the forum and found a simular problem. I took their advice and added "RETAIN" to the "theID" value like so: theID = [customObjInstance TID]; [theID retain]; However, that did not solve the issue... Ok so if by default it's the class name, why should I put much brain force into thinking about an identifier? Could I provide just nil? Would it then use the class name? Or what did they try to say here? Must I make an NSString with the class name by myself and provide it as identifier?

• UIWebView/MPMoviePlayerController and the "Done" button

  I am using the UIWebView to load both streaming audio and video. I have properly set up the UIWebView delegate and I am receiving webViewDidStartLoading and webViewFinishedLoading events perfectly. The webview launches a full screen window (likely a MPMoviePlayerController) Apple's MoviePlayer example gets the array of Windows to determine which window the moviePlayerWindow is for adding custom drawing/getting at the GUI components. I believe this to be a bad practice/hack. My expectation is that I should be able to figure out when that button was clicked by either a delegate method or an NSNotification. It may also be the case that I have to poke around subviews or controllers with isKindOf calls, but I don't think those are correct approaches. Are my expectations incorrect, and if so, why? What is the correct way to bind an action to that "Done" button?

  As per the title. Calling [[UIDevice currentDevice] BeginGeneratingDeviceOrientationNotifications] has no effect. DidRotateToInterfaceOrientation etc events are working fine, but I need to be able to poll the device orientation arbitrarily. How can I fix/do this? The long story: I have a tab application with a navigation controller on each tab. The root view of tab number one is a graph that goes full screen when the orientation changes to landscape; however this needs to be checked whenever the view appears as the orientation change could have occurred elsewhere, so I was hoping to poll the orientation state whenever this view appears.

  To me the ultimate beauty in working as a developer is the fact that given a nice CV, your are going to find a new job, everywhere at any time. So I would like to ask if somebody here as experience in working while travelling for example. Or job-hopping from metropolis to metropolis every, say, six months. For example I have been investigating for how to get to Brazil. But it seems like that working as an employee in Brazil would be no option, b/c it takes a lot of time/money/effort to get the proper visas and permissions. So the only practical solution would be to freelance and the just travel, while getting your job done wherever you are. I bet my ass that there are loads of IT-guys out there and on here who know exactly what I am talking about. I'm looking forward to interesting ideas and stories.

• nsdata to nsstring to nsdata

  Hello everybody. I am calling the webservices. The web service returns data in xml format. Now the problem is the xml data is not being received in proper format. In place of "<", "" it returns in html format like-(<) and (>) . So i assigned the xmldata to a NsMutableString and replaced the escape characters so that the format of xml data is proper. Then i reassigned the NSMutableString to NSData so that i can parse the tags. but the problem is the xmlparser stops right where the xml data is. Where i replaced the tags. it doesnt go further. can anybody make me understand what is going on????
