• Reasonable expectation to support new Operating Systems?

  My company has a desktop app originally developed for Windows XP. The original programmer has since been fired (fired with extreme prejudice I might add). I have fixed the app various times but overall try to avoid it, it is a mess and the only real way to fix it is to completely rewrite it, which could take a year. We have been trying to "forget" about this app, and instead steer clients towards our web version, which is more up to date, easier to maintain, easier to extend, and WAY easier to support. Most clients agree, the web version is just better all around. However we have one client that insists on using the desktop app. The app required a little duct tape to get working on Vista, but now completely breaks on Windows 7. I'm not even sure WHAT all the fixes are to get it working on Win7 (the current time estimate stands at "miracle") but after both installing the RELEASE build, and running the DEBUG build from Visual Studio, the app has errors on nearly every user action, and from what I can see from a high level test run, none of them are related. Since Windows 7 did not exist when this app was developed, is my company really expected to make all the required changes to make it function as "smoothly" as it did on XP?

• Is there an MVVM-friendly way to swap views without value converters firing unnecessarily?

  I thought what I was doing was right out of the Josh Smith MVVM handbook, but I seem to be having a lot of problems with value converters firing when no data in the view-model has changed. So, I have a ContentControl defined in XAML like this: <ContentControl Grid.Row="0" Content="{Binding CurrentViewModel}" /> The Window containing this ContentControl references a resource dictionary that looks something like this: <ResourceDictionary ...> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:SetupPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:SetupPanel /> </DataTemplate> <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type lib_vm:InstructionsPanelViewModel}"> <lib_v:InstructionsPanel /> </DataTemplate> </ResourceDictionary> So, basically, the two data templates specify which view to show with which view-model. This switches the views as expected whenever the CurrentViewModel property on my window's view-model changes, but it also seems to cause value converters on the views to fire even when no data has changed. It's a particular problem with IMultiValueConverter classes, because the values in the value array get set to DependencyProperty.UnsetValue, which causes exceptions unless I specifically check for that. But I'm getting other weird side effects too. This has me wondering if I shouldn't just do everything manually, like this: Instantiate each view. Set the DataContext of each view to the appropriate view-model. Give the ContentControl a name and make it public. Handle the PropertyChanged event for the window. In the event handler, manually set the Content property of the ContentControl to the appropriate view, based the CurrentViewModel (using if statements). This seems to work, but it also seems very inelegant. I'm hoping there's a better way. Could you please advise me the best way to handle view switching so that value converters don't fire unnecessarily?

• Storing an object to use in multiple classes

  I am wondering the best way to store an object in memory that is used in a lot of classes throughout an application. Let me set up my problem for you: We have multiple databases, 1 per customer. We also have a master table and each row is detailed information about the databases such as database name, server IP it's located and a few config settings. I have an application that loops through those multiple databases and runs some updates on them. The settings I mentioned above are updated each loop iteration into memory. The application then runs through series of processes that include multiple classes using this data. The data never changes during the processes, only during the loop iteration. The variables are related to a customer, so I have them stored in a customer class. I suppose I could make all of the members shared or should I use a singleton for the customer class? I've never actually used a singleton, only read they are good in this type of situation. Are there better solutions to this type of scenario? Also, I could have plans for this application to be multithreaded later. Sorry if this is confusing. If you have questions, let me know and I will answer them. Thanks for your help.

• MS Access 2003 - Save button enabling on form open on different tabs

  I have a tab control on a form, and a couple different tabs have save buttons on them. Is that why I get this error? I cannot enable or disable a control when the tab is not showing?

  Hi guys... Hope this isn't a waste of your time. I'm working on a project, and it occured to me that there's a chunk of code out there, that should allow me to see how others have implemented this. I've got a project where I'm going to have a page, with a sel box. the user will select an item from the selList, and based on the item selected, a separate section of the page (areaB) will change in terms of the content/tbls being displayed. i then want to allow the user to go through a series of subpages in areaB, where the user goes through a submit/cancel/confirm process, where the stuff in areaB changes, with the rest of the page remaining the same... i'm trying to figure out the best approach to implement the on both client/server side. i could just have an ugly "if block" where i have abunch of logic, and i completely regen the page each time the user selects an action.. i could have an approach that might involve divs/frames, where i then just regen the targeted frame/div area.. is this even possible?? i could have some form of ajaxy process, which would only alter the targeted section(s) of the page... so.. i'm trying to talk to anyone who has ideas on how to do this, or more ideally, if you know of a good code (client/server) side example of this... that i can examine. i'd really appreciate it!! i've got a more detailed overview but didn't know if it would be cool to post it here... thanks.. tom

• NSFetchedResultsController is driving me crazy

  Hi everyone. i've been building an app since 1 month using NSFetchedResultsController and i was testing the app on the 3.1.2 SDK. The poblem is that i've been using NSFetchedResultsController everywhere in my app and was working on the 3.1.2 version of the SDK, now my client say that i should make it compatible with the 3.0 version and the deadline is almost there. But is crashing everytime i change an object handled by the contoller, the application is crashing with very weird errors. The problem occure when removing the last object in a section and when a change make an object love to another section. I've been using a sample code from "More iPhone 3 Development Tackling iPhone SDK 3" by Dave Mark and Jeff LaMarche. • Windows Form user control hosted in WPF - How to capture the leave event?

  Hi, In my WPF application I'm hosting a custom Windows Form User Control together with other wpf controls. My custom user control is hosted in wpf using a WindowsFormsHost control. This custom user control contains (the parent so to speak) other custom win form controls (children controls). The children controls can be single or composite controls. How can I capture the leave event on a child control when the user navigates from the last child user control in the parent custom user control to a wpf user control? According to MSDN (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms751797.aspx) the leave event is not supported in following scenarios: Enter and Leave events are not raised when the following focus changes occur: 1. From inside to outside a WindowsFormsHost control. 2. From outside to inside a WindowsFormsHost control. 3. Outside a WindowsFormsHost control. 4. From a Windows Forms control hosted in a WindowsFormsHost control to an ElementHost control hosted inside the same WindowsFormsHost. Scenario 1 and 2 is exactly what I struggle with. • How do I Extend Blogengine.Net to collect statistics of visitors?

  I love BlogEngine. But from what I can se it does not collect the standard information about the visitors I would like to see (referrer, browser-type and so on). When I log in as Admin I have a menu item named "Referrer". I can choose a weekday and then I'll be presented with 1 or 2 rows with "google.com 4 hits, "itmaskinen.se 6 hits" and so on, But that's not what I want to se, I want to se where my visitors come from, country, IP if possible, how many visitors and so on. If someone of you are familiar with Blogengine.Net and can point me in the right direction to where I would put my own log-code or if you know any visitor-statistic-extension that can do it for me, I would be really happy to know. I prefer an extension, because if I make changes myself to BlogEngine it may break later updates I install. • How do I add IIS Virtual Directories and arbitrary files in TFS Solution

  We have a web portal product from which we customize portals from customers. We use the precompiled web app and create a virtual directory (vd) where the customization resides. In addition to this we do some changes web.config in the web app folder. We would obviously like to keep these customizations under TFS source control. When I try to add the precompiled web app (which I don't want to add to source control), a warning tells me that the vds cannot be added. If I only add the folder that is referenced to by the vd, I lose the references to assemblies in the precompiled web app. My questions are: How do I structure a solution for adding IIS (sub application level) virtual directories and still retain the references to assemblies? Is it possible to add other directories/files from the web application level (like App_Theme, web.config etc.) to the solution? Since we already use Visual Source Safe, we have established a tree structure for each customization project: Project Root | |-Custom Sql | |-Custom Portal Files (which is added as a virtual directory) | |-Other Customizations I could probably do a lot of this manually through the source control explorer, but I'd like to have everything done through a solution. I've followed the instructions using this article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb668986.aspx, but this doesn't address the exact problem that I have. Oh, and we are currently using Visual Source Safe for portal customizaton, but are eager to make the move to TFS. TIA

• C#+BDE+DBF problem

  I have huge problem: I have lots of .dbf files(~50000) and I need to import them into Oracle database. I open conncection like this: OleDbConnection oConn = new OleDbConnection(); OleDbCommand oCmd = new OleDbCommand(); oConn.ConnectionString = @"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + directory + ";Extended Properties=dBASE IV;User ID=Admin;Password="; oCmd.Connection = oConn; oCmd.CommandText = @"SELECT * FROM " + tablename; try { oConn.Open(); resultTable.Load(oCmd.ExecuteReader()); } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.Message); } oConn.Close(); oCmd.Dispose(); oConn.Dispose(); I read them in loop, and then insert into oracle. Everything's fine. BUT: There is about 1000 files, that I can't open. They raise exception "not a table". So I google, and install Borland Database Engine. Now everything wokrs fine....but no. Now, when I'm reading files, on 1024 file exception raises: "System resource exceeded". But I have lots of free resources. When I remove BDE, everything's fine again, no "system resource exceeded" error, but I cant read all files. Help please. PS: Tried using ODBC but nothing changes.

• Password Confirmation Overlay

  Hello, I'm creating a J2EE web application that uses jQuery and Ajax to help with some of the presentation for a user-friendly interface. I've done a lot of work ensuring security around persistant login cookies, and I've decided to request the password from any user that logged in using a persistant login cookie before being allowed to make any changes that could be malicious. This request would only happen once to confirm the user is who they say they are and will last throughout the session. At present, any requests that meet this criteria has their request information stored in session and then the user is forwarded to a page to confirm their password. Once confirmed, the user's original request is then performed and the requestion information removed from session. What I would like to do is avoid all this redirection and minimize what's held in session (even if it's just for a small time), thus improving usability and convenience for the user. I believe that a jQuery overlay could allow me to prompt the user for their password (if required) and then continue to submit the request if successful. I would of originally used ThickBox, but since that's now deprecated I don't see the benefit in implementing it in an application at this development stage. However, I have tried to create an overlay using jQuery but I've scrapped every attempt as I can't seem to make it all come together. My main problem is preventing the submission when the user incorrectly types a password or cancels the overlay. Desired Flow Persistant Login Sensitive Page Submit Password Confirmation Overlay [Continue Submit | (Cancel | Incorrect] I have already created JavaScript code to encrypt the password to be sent in a parameter, but all I need now is a method of controlling the overlay and how best to use Ajax for this purpose. • Only last row in method execute (Objective-C)

  First I want to apologize for my lack of knowledge in programming in general. I am in the way of learning and have discovered that this site is a huge compliment for me of doing so. I have created a program with three UITextField(thePlace,theVerb,theOutput) and two UITextView where one of the textviews(theOutput) take the text from the other textview(theTemplate) and replaces some strings with the text entered in the textfields. When I click a button it triggers the method createStory that is listed below. This works fine with one exception. The text in the output only changes the string 'number' to the text in the textfield. However if I change the order in the method to replace 'place','number','verb' only the verb is changed, not the number. Im sure this is some sort of easy fix but I can't find it. • Renaming TurboGears 2's Repoze Fields with TGAdmin

  I've been working on renaming TurboGears 2's Repoze 'groups' field to 'roles' to free the namespace and db tables for other purposes. Also roles makes much more sense to me then groups because I have a strong Drupal background. I have made (I'm pretty sure at least, I've double checked a few times.) all the changes required as you can see in this diff. This seems to work fine however I've ran into a rather major issue with the TurboGears Admin system. I've tried http://turbogears.org/2.0/docs/main/Extensions/Admin/index.html and it didn't seem to make any difference, however I'm not 100% sure I did it correctly. The problem occurs when I attempt to go to localhost/admin/permissions/. It causes a Internal Server Error and outputs the following error. http://pastebin.com/YWMH3SiU This error does not happen on the Roles/Users pages and the permissions /edit/1 also works. I'm running kubuntu 10.04 with TG 2.1b2. (I'm running the beta mostly for easier mako support which is really important.) Any help would be very appreciated.

• segfault during __cxa_allocate_exception in SWIG wrapped library

  While developing a SWIG wrapped C++ library for Ruby, we came across an unexplained crash during exception handling inside the C++ code. I'm not sure of the specific circumstances to recreate the issue, but it happened first during a call to std::uncaught_exception, then after a some code changes, moved to __cxa_allocate_exception during exception construction. Neither GDB nor valgrind provided any insight into the cause of the crash. I've found several references to similar problems, including: http://wiki.fifengine.de/Segfault_in_cxa_allocate_exception http://forums.fifengine.de/index.php?topic=30.0 http://code.google.com/p/osgswig/issues/detail?id=17 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libavg/+bug/241808 The overriding theme seems to be a combination of circumstances: A C application is linked to more than one C++ library More than one version of libstdc++ was used during compilation Generally the second version of C++ used comes from a binary-only implementation of libGL The problem does not occur when linking your library with a C++ application, only with a C application The "solution" is to explicitly link your library with libstdc++ and possibly also with libGL, forcing the order of linking. After trying many combinations with my code, the only solution that I found that works is the LD_PRELOAD="libGL.so libstdc++.so.6" ruby scriptname option. That is, none of the compile-time linking solutions made any difference. My understanding of the issue is that the C++ runtime is not being properly initialized. By forcing the order of linking you bootstrap the initialization process and it works. The problem occurs only with C applications calling C++ libraries because the C application is not itself linking to libstdc++ and is not initializing the C++ runtime. Because using SWIG (or boost::python) is a common way of calling a C++ library from a C application, that is why SWIG often comes up when researching the problem. Is anyone out there able to give more insight into this problem? Is there an actual solution or do only workarounds exist? Thanks.

• calling .ajax() from an eventHandler c# asp.ent

  Good day...! In the code behind (upload.aspx) I have an event that returns the number of bytes being streamed; and as I debug it, it works fine. I wanted to reflect the numbers returned from the eventHandler on a progress bar and this is where I got lost. I tried using jQuery's .ajax() function. this is how I implemented it: In the EventHandler in my code behind I added this code to call the .ajax() function: Page.ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), "UpdateProgress", "<script type='text/javascript'>updateProgress();</script>"); My plan is whenever the eventHandler function changes the values of bytes being streamed it calls the javascript function "updateProgress()" The .ajax() function "UpdateProgress()" is as: function updateProgress() { $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "upload.aspx/GetData", data: "{}", contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "json", async: true, success: function (msg) { $("#progressbar").progressbar("option", "value", msg.d); } }); } I made sure that the function GetData() is [System.Web.Services.WebMethod] and that it is static as well. so the workflow of what I am trying to implement is as: - Click On Upload button - The Behind code starts executing and EventHandler triggers - The EventHandler calls .ajax() function - The .ajax() function retrieves the bytes being streamed and updates progress bar. When I ran the code; all runs well except that the .ajax() is only executed when upload is finished (and progress bar also updates only when finished upload); even though I call .ajax() function every time in the eventHandler function as reflected above... What am I doing wrong? Am I thinking of this right? is there anything else I should add maybe an updatePanel or something? thank you

• Define a swig interface file for generation of wrapper to every type from some header file

  Hi! We're using some C library in our Java project. Several years ago some other developer which has retired few years ago (as always) has created all the wrappers for us. The wrappers were generated by the swig, but the interface file is lost now. The basic idea of library and the wrappers for it is following: There only one function which returns pointer to some complex object. And there are wrapper for that function. The complex object is a tree-like structure with dozens of node kinds and types (C structures) used to represent them. There are hundreds of wrappers for every field of every type and we're trying to use them all. The library was updated some time ago and now there are some new data we unaware of which yet, but would like to use. This data is contained in some of the objects indirectly contained or referenced from the object created by the function we call (Some new fields and types were added). I know that I shouldn't make any changes to the wrappers by hand and should rather modify the interface, but as I already wrote it's missing. For now I only want to generate wrappers some few types which are added/changed and them to our old wrappers, but later I want to start creation of interface file which will define "what and how should be wrapped". All the definitions necessary for us are defined in single header file. Is it possible to tell swig to generate wrappers for every type in this header? If so, how can I write such interface file?

• Help with error creating SharePoint list (probably due to privilege issues)

• Vim, LaTeX, word-wrapping, and version control

  I'm writing a LaTeX document in vim, and I have it hard wrapping at 80 characters to make reading easier. However, this causes problems with tracking changes with in version control. For example, inserting "Lorem ipsum" at the beginning of this text: 1 Dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Phasellus bibendum lobortis lectus 2 quis porta. Aenean vestibulum magna vel purus laoreet at molestie massa 3 suscipit. Vestibulum vestibulum, mauris nec convallis ultrices, tellus sapien 4 ullamcorper elit, dignissim consectetur justo tellus et nunc. results in: 1 Lorum ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Phasellus bibendum 2 lobortis lectus quis porta. Aenean vestibulum magna vel purus laoreet at 3 molestie massa suscipit. Vestibulum vestibulum, mauris nec convallis ultrices, 4 tellus sapien ullamcorper elit, dignissim consectetur justo tellus et nunc. When I review this change in git, it tells me that all the lines of the paragraph have changed because of the wrapping, even though only one semantic change has occurred. One way around this problem is to have every sentence on its own line. This looks the same in the rendered document, but the source now is harder to read, because each line has quite a different line length: 1 Lorum ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. 2 Phasellus bibendum lobortis lectus quis porta. 3 Aenean vestibulum magna vel purus laoreet at molestie massa suscipit. 4 Vestibulum vestibulum, mauris nec convallis ultrices, tellus sapien ullamcorper elit, dignissim consectetur justo tellus et nunc. (If I soft wrap at 80, things still look bad, just in a different way.) Is it possible to have my text on disk with one newline per sentence, but display and edit it in vim as if the text of each paragraph was one long line, soft wrapped at 80 characters? I assume it requires some vim-foo rather than tweaking git or LaTeX.

• Eclipse won't believe I have Maven 2.2.1

  I have a project (built from an AppFuse template) that requires Maven 2.2.1. So I upgraded to this (from 2.1.0) and set my path and my M2_HOME and MAVEN_HOME env variables. Then I ran mvn eclipse:eclipse and imported the project into Eclipse (Galileo). However, in the problems list for the project (and at the top of the pom.xml GUI editor) it says: Unable to build project '/export/people/clegg/data/GanymedeWorkspace/funcserve/pom.xml; it requires Maven version 2.2.1 (Please ignore 'GanymedeWorkspace', I really am using Galileo!) This persists whether I set Eclipse to use its Embedded Maven implementation, or the external 2.2.1 installation, in the Preferences - Maven - Installations dialog. I've tried closing and reopening the project, reindexing the repository, cleaning the project, restarting the IDE, logging out and back in again, everything I can think of! But Eclipse still won't believe I have Maven 2.2.1. I just did a plugin update so I have the latest version of Maven Integration for Eclipse -- 0.9.8.200905041414. Does anyone know how to convince Eclipse I really do have the right version of Maven? It's like it's recorded the previous version somewhere else and won't pay any attention to my changes :-( Many thanks! Andrew.

• WPF validation red border doesn't show If UserControl collapsed first

  There seems to be a bug with WPF in 3.5, and I was hoping someone may have found a workaround. Basically if you have a custom UserControl that contains a TextBox and it is in a Window but initialized to be Collapsed by default in the xaml or code behind if it fails validation when you make the control visible it will not show the red border until it fails while visible. However, this works correctly when visibility is set to Hidden, just no when Collapsed. I am already overriding the ErrorTemplate with a style to workaround the Adornment issue with the red border staying visibile when you collapse the control. Below is my full style for the TextBox. • Flex AS3: ComboBox set visible to false doesn't hide

  I have a combobox in a view that receives information about application state changes, and then is supposed to show or hide it's children based on the whole application state. It receives state change messages, it traces the correct values, it does what it's supposed to do, however, it just doesn't seem to work. Essentially, all it needs to do is hide a combobox during one state, and show it again during another state. • C#.NET DataGridView - update database

  I know this is a basic function of the DataGridView, but for some reason, I just can't get it to work. I just want the DataGridView on my Windows form to submit any changes made to it to the database when the user clicks the "Save" button. On form load, I populate the DataGridView and that's working fine. In my save function, I basically have the following (I've trimmed out some of the code around it to get to the point): using (SqlDataAdapter ruleTableDA = new SqlDataAdapter("SELECT rule.fldFluteType AS [Flute], rule.fldKnife AS [Knife], rule.fldScore AS [Score], rule.fldLowKnife AS [Low Knife], rule.fldMatrixScore AS [Matrix Score], rule.fldMatrix AS [Matrix] FROM dbo.tblRuleTypes rule WHERE rule.fldMachine_ID = '1003'", con)) { SqlCommandBuilder commandBuilder = new SqlCommandBuilder(ruleTableDA); DataTable dt = new DataTable(); dt = RuleTable.DataSource as DataTable; ruleTableDA.Fill(dt); ruleTableDA.Update(dt); } Okay, so I edited the code to do the following: build the commands, create a DataTable based on the DataGridView (RuleTable), fill the DataAdapter with the DataTable, and update the database. Now ruleTableDA.Update(dt) is throwing the exception "Concurrency violation: the UpdateCommand affected 0 of the expected 1 records." Thanks very much!

• How to restrain one's self from the overwhelming urge to rewrite everything?

  Setup Have you ever had the experience of going into a piece of code to make a seemingly simple change and then realizing that you've just stepped into a wasteland that deserves some serious attention? This usually gets followed up with an official FREAK OUT moment, where the overwhelming feeling of rewriting everything in sight starts to creep up. It's important to note that this bad code does not necessarily come from others as it may indeed be something we've written or contributed to in the past. Problem It's obvious that there is some serious code rot, horrible architecture, etc. that needs to be dealt with. The real problem, as it relates to this question, is that it's not the right time to rewrite the code. There could be many reasons for this: Currently in the middle of a release cycle, therefore any changes should be minimal. It's 2:00 AM in the morning, and the brain is starting to shut down. It could have seemingly adverse affects on the schedule. The rabbit hole could go much deeper than our eyes are able to see at this time. etc... Question So how should we balance the duty of continuously improving the code, while also being a responsible developer? How do we refrain from contributing to the broken window theory, while also being aware of actions and the potential recklessness they may cause? Update Great answers! For the most part, there seems to be two schools of thought: Don't resist the urge as it's a good one to have. Don't give in to the temptation as it will burn you to the ground. It would be interesting to know if more people feel any balance exists.

• Cassandra hot keyspace structure change

  Hello. I'm currently running a 12-node Cassandra cluster storing 4TB of data, with a replication factor set to 3. For the needs of an application update, we need to change the configuration of our keyspace, and we'd like to avoid any downtime if possible. I read on a mailing list that the best way to do it is to: Kill cassandra process on one server of the cluster Start it again, wait for the commit log to be written on the disk, and kill it again Make the modifications in the storage.xml file Rename or delete the files in the data directories according to the changes we made Start cassandra Goto 1 with next server on the list My questions would be: Did I understand the process well? Is there any risk of data corruption? During the process, there will be servers with different versions of the storage.xml file in the same cluser, same keyspace. Is it a problem? Same question as above if we not only add, rename and remove ColumnFamilies, but if we change the CompareWith parameter / transform an existing column family into a super one. Or do we need to change the name? Thank you for your answers. It's the first time I'll do this, and I'm a little bit scared.
